Highlander Review

Highlander-Poster-01

Highlander
Studio: Cannon Films, Highlander Productions Limited
Publisher: 20th Century Fox
Format:
Cinema (Event Cinemas, George St)
Release Date: Out Now

Overview
Once again those crazy/awesome peeps at In The House have put on a screening of another cinematic classic; Highlander. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, whose body of work up to that point had largely consisted of music videos, this film was originally panned at release but became a cult classic due to its unique story concepts and style.

Highlander-screenshot-06

So after making my way to George st cinemas, I settled in to finally watch this film on the silver screen. Before the screening began, we were treated to trivia by regular MCs Anthony Kieran and David Quinn. As a final game before the screening started, the hosts held a contest of who could do the best impression of a person undergoing a “quickening”. The game was funny and adorable when the youngest contestant, a very young girl, was crowned the winner and awarded a prize (but not “the prize“).

Story
The narrative follows the life of a figure referred to as the eponymous ‘Highlander’. Through narration, his actions in the present day, and flashbacks to his past; we learn that his original name was Connor Macleod and that he is a member of a group of immortals who cannot die except through complete decapitation. Upon death, the surviving immortals become more powerful through a process called “the quickening”. We also learn that the last remaining immortals are gathering together in one place to engage in their final duels as, in accordance with the film’s famous line; “There can be only one”.

Highlander-screenshot-02

Although the plot does explore interesting themes of what living as an immortal through the ages would be like (hint: It’s kinda lonely), it largely serves as a premise to allow for plenty of action scenes where characters in the modern day can swing swords at each other. There isn’t too much you can take from the rudimentary dialogue and characters, but it is a fun concept for what is essentially a ‘swords-and-sorcery’ action flick. There are times when the dialogue is especially underworked, which I guess can add to the camp charm of the film but irks the wordsmith within me.

The performance of the actors is notably ham-handed but I feel that this adds a certain level of camp charm to the film as they spout out hilarious/awesome/clunky one-liners. Christopher Lambert in particular was an interesting choice to play Connor as (according to Quinny) he was a “French actor who could not speak a word of English” but was cast to play a Scotsman. All things considered, he did an alright turn in this role and I was willing to suspend my disbelief whenever he spoke any dialogue. I was similarly confused about Sean Connery’s casting in the film as the protagonist’s Spanish-Egyptian mentor and friend, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, but his performance was much stronger as this boisterous figure in the first half of the film.

Highlander-screenshot-01

Clancy Brown’s energetic and frenetic performance as the villainous Kurgan, on the other hand, is particularly worthy of praise. His rendition is perhaps the most in-your-face evil I have seen in a long time and perfectly fits in with the camp charm of the entire film. There are a number of scenes where he simply steals all focus away from any other character simply because his onscreen presence is so indomitable.

Highlander-screenshot-04

Just to give a heads-up here; this movie’s origin in the eighties does mean it has some of the quintessential hallmarks of action movies which will hit you with major nostalgia… but it also carries certain problematic aspects. This is especially prominent in how the film treats its female characters. The love interests of the protagonist are either kidnapped or sexually assaulted to raise the emotional stakes of the conflict. I found this to be somewhat disturbing as the Kurgan is shown to be evil in so many ways already, that taunting Macleod by telling him that he sexually his partner is somewhat confronting. If this is something which might upset or trigger you, then you may wish to avoid this film.

Visuals
Mulcahy’s direction created some visually interesting shots throughout the film. As well as framing the action (sometimes with ridiculous cuts in continuity), the shots of immortal characters undergoing a ‘quickening’ are actually quite awe-inspiring. The sheer scale of the practical effects involved (along with some simple animation) were what impressed me most and really get across the powerful moment of said ‘quickening’. The final two ‘quickenings’ of the Kurgan and Macleod were particular spectacular with plenty glass and animated lightening to create a palpable sense of power.

Highlander-screenshot-07

The fast cuts of Mulcahy add an energetic pacing to the film and compliment the action sequences. Most of the time you’re able to keep a sense of where the characters are in relation to each other as they move around the sets, but the repeated jumps can also mess with this continuity and create a confusing sense of space.

Audio
The soundtrack quite prominently features works by the band Queen who personally composed most of the songs used in the film. The group composed the songs to match up with different scenes and sequences within the film itself, which shows in how well the songs match the mood of the plot. In particular, I enjoyed the choice of using Who Wants to Live Forever as an accompaniment to a montage of Connor having his heart broken due to outliving the woman he fell in love with.

Highlander-screenshot-05

Overall
Overall my feelings are mixed about this film. The concept of the film is awesome and the overarching plot is pretty good but it fumbles the execution in a number of ways. The performance from Lambert is shaky and it isn’t helped by the, at times, clunky dialogue. Connery and Brown put in some amazing performances however and alongside the soundtrack from Queen, they prove to be some of the film’s most redeeming features. It’s an acquired taste, but if you’re a fan of campy action films from the eighties; then you’ll probably enjoy yourself.

For other films which In The House is screening, feel free to check out their schedule here.

RuneScape merchandise store goes cash free by accepting Bonds as payment

RuneScape merchandise store goes cash free by accepting Bonds as payment

Tuesday 8th September 2015, Cambridge, UK – Jagex Games Studio – creators and custodians of the fantasy MMORPG, RuneScape – has announced that players no longer need to use real-world currency to purchase items from the official RuneScape store. In addition to such traditional methods, cash-conscious players can now use RuneScape Bonds to acquire a range of t-shirts that pay homage to the game. Further items, including god-symbol emblazoned caps, hoodies and more will be rolled out in phases.

Bonds are accrued either by purchasing them directly from Jagex or through bartering with other players. They have proved to be exceptionally popular with the game’s massive player-base since they launched in 2013, with more than 350,000 RuneScape Bonds transacted every month.

In addition to merchandise, Bonds can be traded in for RuneScape membership or used as a donation to partner charities such as WWF and Oxfam. Players can even use their Bonds to purchase their entry to the annual RuneFest fan festival on Saturday 3rd October at Tobacco Dock in London. Approximately 50 percent of attendees this year have used Bonds to buy their ticket for the event, compared with 40 percent in 2014. Additionally, many players attending have paid for their accommodation in the city – and even their flights – using only Bonds.

RAZER LAUNCHES THE WORLD’S MOST PRECISE NOTEBOOK GAMING MOUSE

RAZER LAUNCHES THE WORLD’S MOST PRECISE NOTEBOOK GAMING MOUSE

New sensor, extended battery life and Chroma lighting make the all-new Razer Orochi the most advanced mobile gaming mouse

BERLIN (IFA), Germany – Razer™, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced the complete re-design of the popular Razer Orochi notebook gaming mouse. The Razer Orochi was designed ground up for mobile gamers and features the world’s most precise mouse sensor for on the go gaming.

Retaining the name of its predecessor, the new Razer Orochi features the latest in sensor and battery technology to give gamers pinpoint accuracy and more than double the playing time in wireless mode. Complimenting this overhaul, Razer has also added Chroma lighting, dual mode connectivity and a completely re-engineered shell with a metal top to make the Razer Orochi the most advanced notebook mouse to date.

At the heart of the new Razer Orochi is a 4G, 8,200 DPI laser sensor – the highest DPI sensor ever designed into a mobile gaming mouse. The result is pinpoint precise tracking for incredible accuracy and movement speeds of up to 210 inches per second with 50 G acceleration, making the Razer Orochi ideal for every game and play style, from fast reaction FPS-gameplay through to high accuracy MOBAs.

By utilizing the latest in Bluetooth Low Energy technology, the new Razer Orochi has more than double the battery life of its predecessor with over 60 hours of continuous gaming use, or 7 months of normal use, from a single charge. It is ideal for wireless notebook use with a polling rate of 125 Hz, which increases to a blistering 1000 Hz when used in wired mode, ideal for gaming.

“With the recent advances in sensor and Bluetooth technology, it was time for us to bring the Orochi up to date, which involved a complete redesign of the entire mouse from ground up” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We’ve retained the portable form factor and added rubberized side grips, but on the inside is where the big changes have happened – this is a whole new feature packed mobile gaming mouse.”

The new Razer Orochi also features Razer’s industry leading Chroma lighting, giving users the choice of 16.8 million color options with which to customize their mouse. As with previous Chroma products, customizing the Razer Orochi is achieved within seconds through Razer Synapse, Razer’s cloud-based hardware configurator.

By connecting the Razer Orochi with Razer Synapse, users are able to customize their lighting settings, calibrate their Razer Orochi to the surface they are using, assign macros and functions to the seven mouse buttons, and save all their settings to the cloud for use no matter where they are.

FOOTBALL MANAGER 2016: ALL-NEW SQUAD UNVEILED

FOOTBALL MANAGER 2016: ALL-NEW SQUAD UNVEILED

Enhanced line-up offers ideal football management experience for all. PC and Macintosh simulation scheduled for release on Friday, November 13th

SEGA® Europe Ltd. and Sports Interactive are proud to present football fans across the world with an opportunity to lead their favourite team to glory with the latest release in the multi-million selling, international smash hit Football Manager™ series. Due for release from mid-November, Football Manager 2016 will comprise a suite of simulations, designed to provide the perfect football management experience for the widest possible audience.

In addition to Football Manager 2016 on PC and Macintosh, the newly-assembled squad also includes Football Manager Touch (for both computer and high-end tablets) and Football Manager Mobile (for all iOS and Android devices).

Previously known as Football Manager Classic, Football Manager Touch has, until now, been available as a ‘quick play’ mode within the full simulation (and for high-end tablets since March). Now, for the first time, it will be available separately through Steam (for PC and Macintosh), as well as for high-end tablets. Football Manager Mobile was formerly known as Football Manager Handheld.

“For some time now it’s been clear to us that there is no ‘one size fits all’ football management experience,” says Sports Interactive gaffer Miles Jacobson. “While a huge number of our fans have the time and dedication required to devote themselves to the ‘full’ simulation, there’s an equally-large number who prefer a more streamlined option. Not only that, but the widespread availability of mobile devices means that people are playing in different ways. The introduction of Football Manager Touch as a standalone offering – playable across computer and tablet – means that we now offer something for everyone.”

KEY FEATURES FOR THIS SEASON’S LINE-UP

Football Manager 2016

  • TWO ALL-NEW GAME MODES: Take on your mates with ‘Fantasy Draft’ mode – which gives you the chance to build your own dream team and compete in a mini league – or add your own custom-built team to any existing league you choose with the new ‘Create-A-Club’ option.
  • MANAGER ON THE TOUCHLINE: Get closer to the action than ever before with your own customisable character to bark out instructions and join the celebrations from the touchline.
  • IMPROVED MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE: More than 2,000 new animations make the Football Manager 2016 match engine the best ever. There’s also more control when planning set pieces and a new highlights package to keep you up-to-date with all the action from every league.

  • CROSS-SAVE: All versions of Football Manager Touch 2016 ARE ‘cross-save compatible’ with one another, so careers started on a tablet can be saved to the cloud and continued on computer (and vice versa).
  • MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE: Football Manager Touch 2016 offers enhanced tactical options, including set-piece planning and opposition instructions – all of which play out in the acclaimed Football Manager 3D match engine.
  • CREATE-A-CLUB MODE: Add your own club to the game using the ‘Create-A-Club’ option. Name your club, choose your colours and edit your squad to your heart’s content – even adding yourself and a friend.

Football Manager Mobile 2016

  • ENHANCED TACTICS: Take greater control of your squad with the introduction of new tactical instructions. You can choose where your team concentrates its passing, as well as selecting your main attacking threat and creative outlet – and even advise your goalkeeper on distribution.
  • COACHING STAFF: Prepare your squad for match days better than ever before with the addition of coaches, providing your team with focused training to prepare for their next big fixture.
  • MANAGEMENT STYLE: The introduction of gold, silver and bronze coaching badges allows you to define your own management style. Will you concentrate on improving your defence or attack, or focus on morale and man management? Your decision will influence your team’s style.

Further details on all three versions are available now on the Football Manager website and in the accompanying fact sheets, while even more features will be revealed over the coming weeks via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

THE LEGENDARY RAZER DIAMONDBACK GAMING MOUSE IS BACK, NOW WITH THE WORLD’S MOST PRECISE SENSOR

THE LEGENDARY RAZER DIAMONDBACK GAMING MOUSE IS BACK, NOW WITH THE WORLD’S MOST PRECISE SENSOR

Razer’s iconic Diamondback is re-released with new hardware, form factor and Chroma lighting

BERLIN (IFA), Germany – Razer™, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced the newest iteration of its iconic gaming mouse, the Razer Diamondback. The rejuvenated Diamondback features enhanced ergonomics, the world’s most precise sensor and Chroma LED lighting.

A standard for high-performance gaming since 2004, the Razer Diamondback featured the world’s first optical sensor in a gaming mouse, and its form factor and functionality was developed with the best eSports athletes of the time. Its lightweight design, responsiveness, ergonomic shape and on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment quickly established it as the gaming mouse of choice for professional gamers. The Razer Diamondback went on to win numerous awards globally, and it remains a highly sought after and bestselling mouse to this day.

The new Razer Diamondback stays true to its predecessor’s design ethos, but takes advantage of the latest advances in sensor technology to give gamers a mouse worthy of the legendary Diamondback name.

“Razer has always developed hardware for the world’s most ambitious gamers, and the Diamondback was one of the first mice created with feedback from eSports players to ensure dominance at the highest levels of competition,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We have taken the incomparable Diamondback design and updated it with the best technology available today to create a mouse that will delight new and longtime Razer fans alike with a competitive edge that will do justice to the legacy of the Diamondback name.”

Building upon the form factor of its predecessor, the new Razer Diamondback retains the slim, ambidextrous design, giving both left- and right-handed players an equally comfortable grip in a highly mobile form factor. The side buttons have been strategically placed to allow easy access whether used in the right or left hand. The sculpted design suits a variety of grip styles and hand sizes, perfect for long-term play and the new rubberized grip pads give more control during liftoff or fast swipes when the action gets hectic.

Utilizing the very latest in sensor technology, the Razer Diamondback is equipped with a 16,000 DPI sensor, giving unmatched tracking accuracy. Coupled with Razer’s Synapse software, gamers can customize their Diamondback 1 DPI at a time for perfect tracking accuracy no matter their styles of play. With a lift-off cut-off distance adjustable down to 0.1 mm, players can now swipe and reset with more confidence than ever that accidental drift will not affect their performance.

The new Razer Diamondback would not be complete without Razer’s customizable Chroma lighting, giving gamers a choice of 16.8 million colors to choose from. With multiple lighting locations and the option to synchronize the lighting with other Chroma enabled products, gamers can create a truly personal gaming setup.

Making full use of Razer Synapse, macros, functions or shortcuts can be assigned to any button on the new Razer Diamondback, and then saved to the cloud for immediate use on any PC. Borderlands Coming to Xbox One Backward Compatibility

Earlier this year when Gearbox and 2K brought the remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to Xbox One, I (and I’m sure many of you out there) were wondering where the OG Borderlands was. Well, looks like they had a little trick up their sleeves because although not being remastered, Borderlands is headed to Xbox One consoles via backwards compatibility. All of your DLC and save games will transfer across as well, so time to head back into the world of Pandora!

On Your Mark – The Forza Motorsport 6 Demo is Now Available

We talk a lot about Forza here on Xbox Newsbeat, but would you be surprised to know that this editor has never actually played the game? As someone who isn’t massive on racing games, I have never felt the need to go out and buy the game. Well thankfully Microsoft and Turn 10 have finally released a demo version of the game which gives new players a sample of the courses, cars and game modes that make Forza one of the most highly regarded racing franchises today.

Another nice selection of news morsels for you guys to nibble on. Did any of today’s news pieces manage to grab your attention more than the others? If so, let us know in the comments below and remember to stay tuned to Capsule Computers for all the awesome Microsoft news as it becomes available.
