The launch of Seasons introduces Teams and Guilds, meaning players of any level can socialize within Vainglory and compete for fun or for real prizes, totaling more than USD 125.000 this season. Update 1.9 also includes a new hero, Phinn, several new seasonally-themed skins and a limited time only map. Throughout the month of October, iOS players will have free access to hero Celeste, while hero Taka is available for free for Android players.

Autumn Season 2015

Beginning with this update, Vainglory will feature a seasonal competition structure. Autumn 2015 is the first season, which will last from early October until early January. All players have three months to earn the highest possible skill tier and other achievements to fill their Autumn 2015 trophy room, and at the end of each season, all trophies will appear in players’ Vainglory profiles. There will also be tons other limited edition content for players to enjoy each including seasonal maps, skins and more.

The Guild System

The Vainglory Guild system is designed to give players a supportive social system within the game and make it easier for them to find like-minded, reliable players to battle. All future Guild rewards will be based on dedication and participation. All players within a Guild must hail from the same server-region but can choose whether to be a public or invite-only team. Members can easily communicate with other Guild members through chat. Guilds can be formed by using Glory or ICE and in the beginning can include up to 20 members. By being active, Guilds can unlock the ability to add up to 50 members. Finally, Guilds can soon organize Vainglory Community Meets (VGC) with special support and swag from the Super Evil team. Stay tuned for more updates.

The Team System

The Team-system is made up of players who want to play competitively and can be set up using Glory or ICE with a maximum of six players from the same region. A helpful Team-only chat is available for easy communication and strategizing. Team members will have team tags when playing as a party that will show up in-game. Team skill tier will help determine tournament seed when signing up for regional Vainglory qualifiers.

New hero

The Autumn Season 2015 launch will include new hero, Phinn, who is an unstoppable tank that thrives on the defensive side. Phinn is able to absorb an immense amount of punishment, protecting teammates while they dish out damage to opponents. Puchim@s! Petit Idolm@ster Season One Review

Puchim@s! Petit Idolm@ster Season One
Studio: Gathering
Publisher: FUNimation
Format: DVD
Release Date: May 19, 2015
Price: $19.99 – Available Here

Overview
Back in 2013 FUNimation surprised quite a few anime fans when they announced that they would be streaming the Puchim@s! Petit Idolm@ster anime adaptation. Not only have none of the core Idolm@ster games ever been released in the West, the anime adaptation of the second game was never licensed for release in any form. Although this meant having a fairly high barrier of entry, the Idolm@ster fans have always thrived in the West. Still, the company surprised fans even further by actually releasing the series on DVD and now that Puchim@s Season 1 has been released, is it worth it?

Story
The daily lives of the idols from 765 Production have always been quite busy since they became popular as an idol agency. Many of them spend most of their time traveling to different nations, though the chances of someone finding a mini version of someone they know on even the strangest trip would be impossible. That is of course unless you have a series such as Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster where that is the entire aspect of the show.

puchimas-petit-idolmaster-season-1-screenshot- (1)

What starts as a simple appearance with Ami and Mami bringing home one Puchidol as they are called quickly begins to expand throughout the course of the first season as every idol and even Ritsuko and Kotori end up with miniature versions of themselves. This series focuses entirely on the lives of these idols and the Puchidol versions of themselves as they go from one hilarious event to another.

Most of the first season focuses on the idols encountering new Puchidols and bringing them back to the office where they join the group while also showing off most of their unique abilities, often ones that tend to match the girls they are based off of such as Yukipo’s fondness for digging holes matching Yukiho’s shyness or Chibiki’s ability to summon animals of legend when crying matching Hibiki’s affinity with animals. These are far from the strangest abilities as some of the Puchidols can fly, teleport, or even act like Gremlins by multiplying when touched by water.

puchimas-petit-idolmaster-season-1-screenshot- (3)

It is worth noting that Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster was originally created as a net animation series that aired every weekday over the course of three months in Japan, with each episode only lasting around a minute. Since that wouldn’t work quite as well outside of the net, these shorts have been combined into slightly longer “Director’s Cut” versions that generally combine an entire mini-skit into one five or six minute episode.

This is far better than the original alternative that saw events take place over six different episodes though it is odd to say that the opening theme that was present in the original animation has been removed entirely from the series, outside of snippets sung by the idols in passing, and is not included on this release. A couple of OVA episodes that follow the idols and Puchidols on a quest given to them by the Producer does add in some extra time to the end of the release, though oddly enough only half of that OVA is actually included in Season 1 as the rest is part of Season 2 release.

puchimas-petit-idolmaster-season-1-screenshot- (4)

Now, I must say that those who aren’t fans of the Idolm@ster series or know very little about the characters, then this show is quite frankly not for you as it relies entirely on pre-existing knowledge about each girl’s personality and various traits for the vast majority of its humor. Every Puchidol is a chibi caricature of the girl they are based off of with and almost all of the comedy in the series revolves around these little creatures one way or another with plenty of hilarious antics that range from absolutely ridiculous situations, sight gags, the obsession some characters have with certain Puchidols, and much more.

As mentioned, the entire aspect of Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster leaves it as one that only fans would watch and that is likely for the best as this spin-off gives viewers plenty of time to enjoy an extremely cute and silly series that is about as light-hearted as they come while enjoying the humor that comes from the girls and Puchidols interacting with one another with no drama involved whatsoever unless it is also played for humor seconds later.

Visuals
As mentioned earlier, Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster is as light-hearted as they come and this is represented through the artwork as well. The series features plenty of bright colors and fairly simple representations of the core cast while the Puchidols remain cute chibis that have appearances that occasionally change depending on the season.

puchimas-petit-idolmaster-season-1-screenshot- (2)

A lot of the humor relies on visual gags and thankfully those are well-represented through the cute artwork which occasionally changes to being slightly more detailed for emphasis on a character’s reaction. It is also worth noting that there are plenty of little sound effects and other pieces of text that float around the screen and these have been given insert text translations by FUNimation, which is essential at times due to a few scenes where the Puchidols communicate with one another through said floating text.

Audio
Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster serves as one of the few FUNimation releases in recent memory that has been given a subtitle only release but considering the core cast of Japanese voice actors from the games have returned to reprise their roles and that the Puchidols only speak through small noises reminiscent of the idols they are based off of, this decision was for the best.

puchimas-petit-idolmaster-season-1-screenshot- (6)

There isn’t so much background music throughout the series as much as small tones and dramatic sound effects used for humor while there are three different ending themes used throughout the first season, all of which feature a certain number of the 765 Pro idols singing an enjoyably fluffy mini-song as a closing theme.

Extras
The release of Puchim@s Season 1 comes with three OVAs which are mixed into the rest of the anime shorts, except they are a bit longer than your average five minute short and also features clean versions of all three textless closing themes: “Ar*i*ga*to Yesterdays,” “Today With Me,” and “Maybe Tomorrow,” and trailers for other FUNimation releases.

Overall
Puchim@s: Petit Idolm@ster Season 1 never tries to be anything more than a fluffy comedy series. With simple cute designs and minimalistic animations this first season is one that appeals to fans of the core franchise which works out very well despite FUNimation’s odd decision of separating OVAs leaving this release feeling unfinished due to their placement after the “celebratory” final episode on this release. With this first season introducing all of the Puchidols and giving everyone a taste of the type of humor the series focuses on, it’ll be interesting to see how the second season will manage to deliver.

Explore the Swamp and Snow Regions Now Open on the Island, With New Creatures the Beezlebufo Gigantic Frog, Dire Wolf, Megaloceros, and more!

The world of ARK: Survival Evolved is ever evolving and today the island expanded with two massive new biomes opening up – the “Swamp” and the “Snow” regions. These areas include new creatures and items appropriate for each extreme climate, and existing creatures have been moved into their new area-specific homes. First, Survivors will encounter the “Swamp,” a fetid, hazy, waterlogged expanse filled with prehistoric snakes, gators, bugs, piranhas, and the all-new “Beezlebufo” gigantic frog, which players can ride to vault over obstacles with huge leaps. Poisonous plants abound in the Swamp, but trudging through the muck is worthwhile due to the unique plant life that can be harvested for advanced recipes.

Courageous Survivors can then head to the “Snow” zone, where they will need to quickly don bulky fur armor to insulate themselves from the subzero temperatures. But the cold weather is not the only thing that Survivors will need to watch out for in this Snow zone: vicious “Dire Wolves” roam wild acros these lands, looking for their next meal. However, when tamed, a Dire Wolf can serve as a powerful, incredibly fast mount, useful for hunting down the elegant Megaloceros “Stags” that also call this zone home. High quality resources are plentiful among the harsh natural beauty of the frozen wastes.

New Furniture items to decorate homes and bases in these new biomes is now available. Intrepid Survivors should rush to lay claim to these expanded territories before competing Tribes do. Good luck!

Nobunaga The Fool Collection 1 Review

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-box-art
Nobunaga The Fool Collection 1
Studio: Satelight
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: Blu-ray (Reviewed), DVD
Release Date: April 28, 2015
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview
The tales of Oda Nobunaga have been told in various forms throughout the years thought he most common theme tends to either feature the historical characters being female instead of male or mixing historical elements in with fantasy mech action. Nobunaga The Fool happens to be the latter with the extra twist of bringing additional historical names from Western history into the mix. Now that the first half of the series has been released, is this mixture of Eastern and Western history worth watching?

Story
Set in a world where the planet has been split into the Eastern Star and Western Star, both planets derive power from the Dragon Veins that flow between the worlds. While the Western star flourishes under the rule of King Arthur in a European setting, the Eastern Star is filled with battles and wars between nations as the Japanese based world finds itself stuck in the Warring States Era of Japanese history.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (4)

Long after the deaths of their original bodies, Jeanne D’Arc and Oda Nobunaga have found themselves reborn on each of these worlds. Ever since she was young Jeanne has been seemingly cursed with the ability to see events that will happen in the future which has led to her being called a demon by her village while Nobunaga’s brash nature has led to him being called a foo and largely seen as a nuisance by the rest of his clansmen outside of his two friends Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi.

One day Jeanne witnesses a vision of the “Savior King” who appears to be living on the Eastern Planet and with the help of the genius war armor (mech suit) developer and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci who also happens to tell fortunes with tarot cards, she manages to reach the Eastern Planet with a freshly developed war armor where the pair just so happen to crash land near Nobunaga’s location after he laments his uselessness and vows to change the world after witnessing his clans’ soldiers be annihilated by the Takeda war armors.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (1)

With Nobunaga possibly being the one in Jeanne’s visions, especially after he manages to power up the war armor and tap into its potential, the pair swear allegiance to Nobunaga where they quickly find themselves embroiled in the Eastern Stars wars and political issues within the Oda clan. To make matters worse, those from the Western Star are seeking to invade the East and bring the planets under one rule, with Julius Caesar being the first one to arrive in a series that spends plenty of time focusing on action and putting a few twists on historical events.

Now if all of the historical name dropping didn’t give you the hint, Nobunaga The Fool is something of a mess as the series. The idea of bringing together various historical figures from European history and dropping them into the Warring States Era only with large mechs capable of unleashing special elemental powers if the user happens to be the owner of a “sacred treasure” at the same time is nonsensical at best and perhaps if handled by competent enough writers, may turn out okay.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (6)

However if these first thirteen episodes are anything to go by, the series unfortunately won’t deliver in any satisfying way. Those who have seen anything Oda Nobunaga related in the past or know their history will find most of the events that transpire to be entirely predictable as the series retells numerous events from Nobunaga’s life with different twists, such as his actions at his father’s funeral, the building of a castle overnight to fool an enemy, and more.

At the times that it comes together properly, Nobunaga The Fool does deliver on some entertaining sequences and a handful of the characters do come off as likable. Nobunaga does develop slightly over the course of the events that play out, most of them being tragic losses, Himiko plays a believable character who actually cares for Nobunaga, and both Da Vinci and Mitsuhide being interesting to watch whenever they are on screen or planning something though the majority of the cast so far gives viewers very little reason to care about them, such as Jeanne who is used for fan-service and jokes more often than she plays a real role in the story so far.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (5)

By attempting to mix together so many different historical, mystical, and technological elements together it feels like the writers were attempting to appeal to everyone at once and only created a mess that rarely comes together to deliver a worthwhile episode throughout these first thirteen. Despite the numerous flaws there are certain elements of intrigue that rise up from time to time, such as the political maneuvering of Mitsuhide and a few of the secrets that aren’t easily predicted by those who know anything about the history of the characters. Perhaps the numerous developments throughout this half will pay off in some way during the second half of the series, or so we can only hope.

Visuals
Despite being a series that focuses on mech action with very few combat sequences not taking place in war armor, one would think that the focus of the animation studio would be to create memorable looking mech designs. Unfortunately that is far from the case with Nobunaga The Fool as many of the mechs are as bland as they come with even Nobunaga’s “The Fool” war armor barely standing out in any substantial way. This lack of quality transfers into the combat sequences as well since most battles tend to be flashy with very little actual movement.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (2)

The designs of the characters are at least somewhat unique with Himiko appearing rather unique and a number of the Western characters standing out quite a bit from the Eastern counterparts, though don’t expect too much excitement here as most of the animation remains rather simplistic with little motion outside of a few specific events meant to give some scenes some extra drama.

Audio
Nobunaga The Fool Collection 1 has been released by Sentai Filmworks with an English dub track to accompany the original Japanese voice track and the quality is unfortunately fairly hit and miss. While some characters tend to sound okay, many of Nobunaga’s lines sound absolutely terrible due to localization efforts and the characters often inserting various Italian and French words into their dialogue (accompanied by translation notes) feels a bit desperate at times though at least all of the insert songs are still sung by the original Japanese voice actresses.

nobunaga-the-fool-collection-1-screenshot- (3)

The background music is rather suitable for a series that finds itself sitting during the Warring States Era and as mentioned before, a number of insert songs do appear from time to time which is a nice touch. The opening theme for the first half “Fool the World” by Minori Chihara is quite enjoyable and fits the series well while the ending theme “Axis” by Stereo Dive Foundation is as generic as they come.

Extras
As far as bonus content goes; this release is rather simplistic as it only features textless versions of the opening and ending animation accompanied by trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases.

Overall
Nobunaga The Fool is a series where the writers tried to cram every element possible into a series without thinking of how to develop anything properly. As a result, these first thirteen episodes feel like a mess that is being put together in an effort to create an entertaining series that occasionally succeeds in certain elements. Of course since these are only the first thirteen episodes, perhaps the second half will turn into something grand but unfortunately the first half doesn’t reflect well on the future.

Skyshine’s Bedlam Review

skyshines-bedlam-logo-001

Skyshine’s Bedlam
Developer
: Skyshine Games
Publisher: Versus Evil
Platform: Windows
Release Date: 16 September 2015
Price: $19.99 USD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Skyshine’s Bedlam was the first game to license The Banner Saga’s engine. Skyshine’s Bedlam may share similar turn based strategic combat, but Bedlam is an unforgiving place. Failure is permanent in this rogue-like, so players will need to master resource management and combat strategy to survive Bedlam.

Story

The mighty city of Bysantine has simply become too overcrowded. Outside its sturdy walls lay the wasteland known as Bedlam, a dangerous place filled with violent rogue AI and bands of marauders. The player takes on the role of The Mechanic, a mysterious figure promising to take a highly armoured Dozer full of immigrants and lead it through the chaos of Bedlam to the mythical Aztec City. Bedlam is filled with the standard post-apocalyptic cast of mutants, marauders, rogue A.I., and cyborgs who are more than happy to use violence to get their way. Fans of Mad Max, Borderlands, and Fallout will feel right at home in Bedlam’s gritty deserts.

skyshines-bedlam-screenshot-004

Gameplay

Skyshine’s Bedlam is a rogue-like that mixes resource management and strategy RPGs together. The game is broken down to two main phases, the world map and combat. In the world map, players will guide their dozer through Bedlam, while managing the ever dwindling supplies. Travelling will take time, fuel, and food to complete. Random events occur after arriving in the new area, with players given some choices on how to approach the event. The results range from lost resources, meet ups with strange wanderers, and combat.

Players will need to plan their route ahead of time to acquire precious resources. The actual planning is a bit frustrating. The game’s map is composed of a bunch of small provinces, with absolutely no indication of the road ahead. Plans to arrive in an area to collect a marked resource node can result in an extremely roundabout path that drains more resources than expected. A way to see the next two or three possible moves from the current position would be a much better way of letting the player plan their course in the short term, while still maintaining some element of surprise in the long term.

skyshines-bedlam-screenshot-005

From the map screen, players can upgrade their vehicle, providing lower consumption of resources and faster healing of away teams. These upgrades cost power cells, which are also needed for Equalizer abilities and Dozer weapons during combat. Players are stuck with the hard decision to invest precious power cells for long term efficiency versus short term survival during the next combat phase.

Combat rates on the simple end of tactical RPGs. Before combat starts, players will assign up to four crew members to their away team. There are four classes: tanky Frontliners, Deadeye glass cannons, close combat specializing Trenchers, and well-rounded Gunslingers. Engaging in combat with only three away team members will award the player with extra meat and crude, encouraging the player to only send the exact number of crew members they think they will need. Crew members that are particularly successful at killing the enemy level up after a certain number of kills, giving them a healthy stat boost. Additionally, special elite units will join the crew after they are defeated in combat or a certain item is presented to them. Because of the stat bonuses given to elite units and veterans, other team members quickly become cannon fodder to be sacrificed at any given moment. Additionally, losing one of the powerful characters can be at times frustratingly impossible to bounce back from.

skyshines-bedlam-screenshot-001

Players can only perform two actions per turn, with movement and attacking counting as one action. I’m not a fan of the short number of actions per turn, as it gives combat a really unpleasant rhythm. Players can also freely spend power cells to perform Equalizer abilities and use Dozer weapons, which can completely turn the tide of a pitched battle. As players explore Bedlam, the inhabitants become more aware of the Dozer’s presence and will begin to throw more and more enemies at the player, making combat increasingly difficult. Combat itself is painfully repetitive due to the limited number of power cells, the focus on elite units, and the singular objective of “kill everyone.”

The game’s controls are very simple and elegant. Gamers only need to use a mouse to control the game. In combat, players right click a square to move their crew member to the box and left click to attack. It is a foolproof control scheme.

skyshines-bedlam-screenshot-002

Visuals

Skyshine’s Bedlam is a perfect comic book version of the post apocalypse wasteland. The art style is bright and bold, looking like a less aggressive version of Borderland’s art style. The graphic options are a bit on the sparse side, with the game only offering fullscreen and windowed options. For those preferring to play on a smaller window, the game can be resized to whatever suits the player in Windowed mode. Fullscreen mode will automatically default to the desktop resolution.

Audio

The audio experience is solid. The voice acting is a little over the top, but it fits the comic book style rather well. The soundtrack is an enjoyable listen. Skyshine’s Bedlam’s audio options are just as Spartan as the graphic options, with players only able to toggle the music and sound effects on or off. A volume slider is sorely missed.

skyshines-bedlam-screenshot-003

Overall

Hardcore fans of rogue-likes looking for something different from the hundreds of rogue-like action RPG that currently flood the market will probably have a great time with Skyshine’s Bedlam. Though the game has a solid audio/visual presentation, the game struggles with repetitive and boring combat and the feeling of being too random to be strategic at times. The developers seem committed on making serious balance changes to the game post launch, with a major patch implementing some big changes released shortly after launch. Unfortunately, it is difficult to recommend Skyshine’s Bedlam to all but the most hardcore at this point in time.
