MARIO TENNIS: ULTRA SMASH FOR Wii U SERVES UP MEGA MULTIPLAYER FUN ON NOVEMBER 21st

MARIO TENNIS: ULTRA SMASH FOR Wii U SERVES UP MEGA MULTIPLAYER FUN ON NOVEMBER 21st

Team up with a compatible amiibo in online doubles, or battle tough CPU opponents in the new Knockout Challenge mode

23rd October, 2015 – Coming exclusively to Wii U on November 21st in Australia and New Zealand, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash offers brand new fun for court competitors, including the ability to team up with amiibo. Supported amiibo* can be your partner in online doubles matches, or join you to battle strong computer-controlled opponents in the offline Knockout Challenge mode. The more matches your amiibo plays, the more experience it’ll gain, becoming a uniquely powerful team-mate as its abilities increase over time.

New faces like Rosalina also hit the courts, along with returning characters like Luigi, Waluigi, Boo and more for tennis with a distinct Mushroom Kingdom twist. On top of standard shots like topspin, lobs, slices and more, the new Ultra Smash move sees characters leap high into the air and smash the ball down to devastating effect. Adept tennis tacticians can also gain the advantage by hitting the right shot while standing in the coloured Chance Areas that occasionally appear, unleashing super-strong smashes or bamboozling slices to flummox adversaries on the other side of the net.

Using a combination of controllers including the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller and Classic Controller Pro, up to four players can get together in supported modes for lively tennis battles. And with a choice of camera angles, there’ll be no more defeats blamed on having to play on the far side of the court – the TV and GamePad screen can each show a different end of the court, so both teams will always have the perfect view.

An array of gameplay modes offer plenty of opportunities for tennis tomfoolery:

  • Knockout Challenge: Tense tiebreak matches against increasingly difficult computer-controlled opponents await in this single-player mode. If the going gets too tough, you can call in a supported amiibo as your doubles partner.
  • Mega Battle: Your character grows to gigantic proportions after grabbing a Mega Mushroom, dominating the court with their increased power and range. When rivals on both sides of the net are giant-sized, anything can happen!
  • Classic Tennis: For those who prefer their tennis a little more traditional, Classic Tennis offers two variations: Standard mode features Chance Shots and Jump Shots but no Mega Mushrooms, while Simple puts competitors between the tramlines with no Chance Shots or power-ups – a real test of tennis prowess.
  • Online multiplayer: Go up against distant adversaries from all over the world in competitive ranked play in either Mega Battle or Classic Tennis modes, or quickly jump into more casual matches. Two players on the same console can team up to take on all-comers, or a supported amiibo can join you on as your doubles partner on the online courts.

As a limited launch offer, anyone who purchases Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash from Nintendo eShop in its first four weeks on sale will receive a download code for the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis on Wii U Virtual Console. This N64 title not only kick-started Mario’s tennis career, it also introduced the world to Waluigi for the very first time.

Compete to see who the top seed is in your household, train up a compatible amiibo as a powerful doubles partner and match up against online opponents in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, coming to Wii U in Australia and New Zealand on November 21st. Two colourful new controller designs – Wii Remote Plus Toad and Wii Remote Plus Bowser – will also be available on the same day. To get a taste of the tennis action, check out the Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash trailer!
* Currently available compatible amiibo include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Rosalina, Wario, and Donkey Kong.

ONE PIECE: BURNING BLOOD – NEW DETAILS UNVEILED!

ONE PIECE: BURNING BLOOD – NEW DETAILS UNVEILED!

After announcing the game in September, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment has today revealed new details about ONE PIECE: Burning Blood! Burning Blood is a dynamic and colorful new fighting game featuring the world’s most famous pirate: Monkey D. Luffy. Engage in massive brawls with Sabo, Ace, Bartolomeo, Ener, Crocodile and Bartolomeo, all featured in the “One Piece” Anime & Manga. There’s also the newly announced Smoker – and you can expect other new characters to join the roster!

One Piece: Burning Blood has several features that add a level of strategy to the fighting in the game. Ever dreamt of Luffy, Sabo and Ace fighting together as one epic team against their enemies? Well players can create a team of 3 characters and swap them out in order to gain a tactical advantage. Certain characters can use special Logia Moves for unique abilities: allowing players to burn through their enemies or even move faster than lightning! Logia Fruits also allow the use of Logia Guard: where some characters are untouchable by physical attacks for limited amount of time. However, the powerful Haki blow is a solid counter to this guard. Last but not least, as in the original Manga, Devil Fruits will be the source of unique massive Special Attacks and Reinforced Special Attacks!

PlayStation®4, Xbox One and PlayStation®Vita players can rejoice as this epic fighting-game will be released in Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Australasia in 2016!

Dark Souls III Network Test Impressions

Dark-Souls-III-screenshot-(6)

A few weeks ago, I got to try my hand at Namco Bandai and From Software’s upoming action RPG Dark Souls III. As a massive fan of the ‘Souls’ franchise of games I was ecstatic, but while my time with Dark Souls III was fun, it was very, very brief and left me feeling… hollow inside. Thankfully, due to the recent Dark Souls III Network Test, I was able to sit down in the comfort of my own home, and go to town on the game for around six hours.

Immediately upon booting up the network test and looked around the opening area, I couldn’t help but think where the franchise has come from in such a short amount of time. From 2007’s Demon’s Souls to now, the guys at From Software have managed to keep the same tone and feel of the game, while slightly refining it with each installment.

I have spent a lot of time playing Bloodborne this year (in fact, it has hardly left my PS4) so going from its aggressive, “always pushing forward” style of combat back to the more defensive and “wait for your moment” style that Dark Souls III offers took some getting used to. Thankfully, the game controls almost identically to not only Bloodborne but to the previous Souls games too. There is definitely something to be said about a franchise as deep as this where you can pick up the controller and have an almost immediate understanding of how the controls work simply by playing previous games.

Dark-Souls-III-screenshot-(5)

Now while the controls are almost the same this time around, that doesn’t mean that the game is. Firstly I noticed that movement speed is a touch faster than previous games, putting it more towards the Bloodborne side of the spectrum. The faster movement is not too much of a game changer, but I was surprised at how much my play style changed to reflect it. Not only that but the slightly faster pace helped everything feel more fluid and responsive to the touch – something you always want when playing one of these games.

The second, and most glaring difference to me was how much the game resembled Demon’s Souls moreso than either of the two previous Dark Souls games. Demon’s Souls was a unique game that managed to take elements of gothic horror and meld them into this dark medieval, high-fantasy setting, and this is something that Dark Souls III manages to do too. twisted creatures that look like they were ripped from a 19th century storybook (and not the fun kind) as well as landscapes reminiscent of that of Bloodborne really help Dark Souls III stand out from its brethren.

dark-souls-III-artwork- (3)

Aestetically, the game was beautiful. Being such an early build there were a few bumps and hiccups but overall the entire thing just looked so damn sexy. The dark, twisted buildings that served as the game’s map look desolate and run-down. The breakable objects like barrels, tables etc all have this nice explosive particle effect to them when destroyed and most impressively – Instead of reusing old enemy models, everything looks completely redone from the ground up. Old enemy types like the undead knights or the praying undead from Dark Souls I make a reappearance here, but they have been reworked from the ground-up to fit this new aesthetic and new hardware.

While there are a few more changes to the way the game plays (some I don’t want to get into until I have a more thorough understanding of them), like the magic bar that seems lifted from Demon’s Souls or the new Lord of Cinder mode which replaces hollowing and humanity,  longtime fans of the series can rest easy because at its core this is still very much a Dark Souls game. Sure, it feels fresh and exciting and new but it manages to combine this with things like the Demon’s Souls magic bar and almost Bloodborne level movement speed to create a game that is a refreshing combination of the old and the new.

dark-souls-iii-banner-01

The Souls games are some of my favourites in all of gaming and Dark Souls III is already shaping up to be the best of the bunch. While Dark Souls II felt like more of the same kind of stuff we had come to expect, Dark Souls III feels like that next leap forward and I can’t wait to see just how much else has changed when the full game launches April 2016.
