Dark Souls III Network Test Impressions

Dark-Souls-III-screenshot-(6)

A few weeks ago, I got to try my hand at Namco Bandai and From Software’s upoming action RPG Dark Souls III. As a massive fan of the ‘Souls’ franchise of games I was ecstatic, but while my time with Dark Souls III was fun, it was very, very brief and left me feeling… hollow inside. Thankfully, due to the recent Dark Souls III Network Test, I was able to sit down in the comfort of my own home, and go to town on the game for around six hours.

Immediately upon booting up the network test and looked around the opening area, I couldn’t help but think where the franchise has come from in such a short amount of time. From 2007’s Demon’s Souls to now, the guys at From Software have managed to keep the same tone and feel of the game, while slightly refining it with each installment.

I have spent a lot of time playing Bloodborne this year (in fact, it has hardly left my PS4) so going from its aggressive, “always pushing forward” style of combat back to the more defensive and “wait for your moment” style that Dark Souls III offers took some getting used to. Thankfully, the game controls almost identically to not only Bloodborne but to the previous Souls games too. There is definitely something to be said about a franchise as deep as this where you can pick up the controller and have an almost immediate understanding of how the controls work simply by playing previous games.

Dark-Souls-III-screenshot-(5)

Now while the controls are almost the same this time around, that doesn’t mean that the game is. Firstly I noticed that movement speed is a touch faster than previous games, putting it more towards the Bloodborne side of the spectrum. The faster movement is not too much of a game changer, but I was surprised at how much my play style changed to reflect it. Not only that but the slightly faster pace helped everything feel more fluid and responsive to the touch – something you always want when playing one of these games.

The second, and most glaring difference to me was how much the game resembled Demon’s Souls moreso than either of the two previous Dark Souls games. Demon’s Souls was a unique game that managed to take elements of gothic horror and meld them into this dark medieval, high-fantasy setting, and this is something that Dark Souls III manages to do too. twisted creatures that look like they were ripped from a 19th century storybook (and not the fun kind) as well as landscapes reminiscent of that of Bloodborne really help Dark Souls III stand out from its brethren.

dark-souls-III-artwork- (3)

Aestetically, the game was beautiful. Being such an early build there were a few bumps and hiccups but overall the entire thing just looked so damn sexy. The dark, twisted buildings that served as the game’s map look desolate and run-down. The breakable objects like barrels, tables etc all have this nice explosive particle effect to them when destroyed and most impressively – Instead of reusing old enemy models, everything looks completely redone from the ground up. Old enemy types like the undead knights or the praying undead from Dark Souls I make a reappearance here, but they have been reworked from the ground-up to fit this new aesthetic and new hardware.

While there are a few more changes to the way the game plays (some I don’t want to get into until I have a more thorough understanding of them), like the magic bar that seems lifted from Demon’s Souls or the new Lord of Cinder mode which replaces hollowing and humanity,  longtime fans of the series can rest easy because at its core this is still very much a Dark Souls game. Sure, it feels fresh and exciting and new but it manages to combine this with things like the Demon’s Souls magic bar and almost Bloodborne level movement speed to create a game that is a refreshing combination of the old and the new.

dark-souls-iii-banner-01

The Souls games are some of my favourites in all of gaming and Dark Souls III is already shaping up to be the best of the bunch. While Dark Souls II felt like more of the same kind of stuff we had come to expect, Dark Souls III feels like that next leap forward and I can’t wait to see just how much else has changed when the full game launches April 2016.

New Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege Gameplay Trailer Teases New Maps

tom-clancys-rainbow-six-siege-screenshot-011

Ubisoft released a new trailer for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege with plenty of action and a few teaser shots of some new maps. In the trailer we have a map set in the French Alps in what looks like a living complex for the rich and famous nestled in the mountains. Another map is set in Germany in a port with a listing cargo ship in the distance. The third map set in Los Angeles, but looks very similar to Embassy, so I cannot say for sure if it’s actually a different map. The outside shot of the building is definitely new, but the footage of the FBI team breaching through the windows looks like it is set in Embassy.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows on December 1st.

KOEI TECMO ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE AND DETAILS PRE-ORDER BONUSES FOR ARSLAN: THE WARRIORS OF LEGEND

KOEI TECMO ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE AND DETAILS PRE-ORDER BONUSES FOR ARSLAN: THE WARRIORS OF LEGEND

New Battle Moves and Additional Playable Characters Unveiled

BURLINGAME, Calif. – October 22, 2015 – KOEI TECMO America revealed today a wealth of new information on the release of Arslan: The Warriors of Legend, which will become available across North America on February 9, 2016 for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft. It will also be simultaneously available digitally on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

Based on the renowned novel, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, this tactical action epic keeps close to the spirit of the rebooted anime and manga version illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa, creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. As such, in addition to the Warriors series’ traditional thrilling action of one versus a thousand, Arslan: The Warriors of Legend incorporates a new type of action – the Mardan Rush. Designed to match the setting of The Heroic Legend of Arslan, this action allows players to wipe out large numbers of enemies by taking control of special ‘Rush’ units (mounted, ranged, or melee) and dealing devastating damage.

In addition to controlling army units, the game also features new battle moves for individual characters, such as the Chain Strike. As the story progresses, playable characters will gain access to different weapon types. Chain Strike allows for a real-time switch between available weapons while executing a power attack, which brings more variety to the action and can be used to prolong combos!

Furthermore, KOEI TECMO announced a series of exclusive bonus content, available to those who pre-order Arslan: The Warriors of Legend. Specifically, pre-orders through GameStop & EB Canada will include a special weapon and armor set for Daryun, as well as ‘Conflict at Gujarat Fortress’, a new original scenario for Free Mode. Those who pre-order from Best Buy or Amazon will receive the new original scenario, ‘Battle for the Title’, for Free Mode. Both scenarios offer players the possibility to unlock some very special Limited Skill Cards, which will give them an extra edge in battle!

In support of the information released, KOEI TECMO has put together a batch of new assets, including images of two newly unveiled playable characters (Jaswant – a former spy for the kingdom of Shindra – and Kubart – a seasoned veteran of the Pars cavalry), images from two additional stages (the fortress of Kashan, and the citadel of Peshawar), screenshots showing the Mardan Rush and Chain Strike in action, as well as assets showing off the pre-order bonus content!

KOEI TECMO AMERICA has also released a brand new trailer for the game, which can be found at https://youtu.be/pbYvxFDdeV8.

About Arslan: The Warriors Of Legend

Originally written as a novel series in the late 1980’s, The Heroic Legend of Arslan has been adapted to manga and anime numerous times, with the most prominent being the 2013 release of a manga series by famed illustrator Hiromu Arakawa (the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist). It tells the story of the young crown prince of Pars, Arslan, as he is forced out of his kingdom when his father, the king, is betrayed and defeated and his domain conquered. Arslan and his few companions must reassemble an army and fight against overwhelming odds to regain his throne and liberate his kingdom. Through his exploits he reaches emotional maturity, while the series also tackles underlying issues of slavery, religious fanaticism, betrayal, and humanity.

The game adaptation of this magnificent story seamlessly blends the fast paced tactical action gameplay indicative of the Warriors franchise with a stunningly engaging narrative. Using cell-shaded graphics and basing all character design on the anime series Arslan: The Warriors of Legend delivers a gaming experience designed to fully immerse the player into Arslan’s universe!

Vikings: The Complete Third Season Review

Vikings: Season Three
Studio: MGM
Publisher: MGM Television, 20th Century Fox
Format:
Blu-ray, DVD (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Here we are again, with the third season of Vikings we come back to the sagas of the Northmen (and QUITE importantly; women). My previous forays into the show have been very pleasant with seasons 1 and 2 creating a number of memorable moments and characters. Now with Ragnar as king of the Vikings, we ask ourselves whether the show has wintered too long and overstayed its welcome. Read on to find out what I think.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-02

Story

Our story picks off from the climax of last season with Ragnar (Travis Flimmel), now King, setting off to return to England and claim the land which was promised to him by King Ecbert (Linus Roache). Complications arise and the mainstay of the Viking force gets drawn into a succession war in the neighbouring kingdom of Mercia, fighting for Ecbert’s ally; Princess Kwenthrith (Amy Bailey). With Viking mercenaries, she is able to succeed to the throne while Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) helps establish a Viking settlement in Wessex. Tensions and complications arise from there and culminate in sudden reveal midway through the season which I did not see coming.

The political intrigue between Ecbert, Kwenthrith, and Ragnar is quite interesting throughout. It’s not quite at the level of an episode of Game of Thrones in terms of body count, but it’s strong enough to certainly keep you interested. I’m invested enough in the successes and failures of these characters that I wish to see how thing ultimately unfold. I’m particularly impressed by Bailey’s turn as the mercurial and downright psychopathic Princess Kwenthrith.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-06

Athelstan (George Blagden) has one of the more interesting developments in this season as he finally comes to terms with his crisis of faith. His choices ultimately lead to tensions between him and his Viking friends which provides an interesting arc within the series to pace out the main action. The homestead sub-plot in the first couple of episodes, wherein Aslaug, Helga, and Siggy deal with a strange wanderer coming to Kattegat, feels like a bit of misstep. In the first season, I remember critiquing that the homestead narratives felt boring compared to the high stakes action happening elsewhere and I feel like the series has returned to this problem. It’s hard for me to care about the personal problems of characters when there are far larger (and more interesting) complications unfolding elsewhere.

One thing which I’ve come to realise about this series which I absolutely love is the way that the show portrays religion. With many modern historical fictions, the author presents medieval religion through the cynical eye of modern skepticism. This is not the case in Vikings as you get the sense that most of the characters are in one form or another; quite religious. It’s refreshing to see this aspect of the medieval mentality replicated faithfully (no pun intended) with the characters all engaging in the practice of religion, regardless of whether they give praise to Odin or Jesus Christ. It pleases me greatly as a historian, and I’m sure some of you will find it interesting as well.

The season climaxes with a Viking raid on the city of Paris. It is refreshing to see how far the show has come in the sets and locations it has brought to bear. It’s particularly interesting to see the setup for some more courtly intrigue with the introduction of the Frankian Imperial court at Paris. I look forward to seeing this new element in the coming season and what the barbaric Vikings can add to the civilised courts of the descendants of Charlemange.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-01

Visuals

The show has come a long way in its visual style since its first season a couple of years ago. We still get plenty of well-choreographed action scenes. In these aforementioned scenes, there is a real sense of physicality as these actors move and fight on a set rather than a sound stage with a green screen. The new sets based in the Frankish court are particularly welcome with their colourful noble linens after the muted colours of provincial England and Viking villages. There were also some interesting moments of visual direction with interesting shots being created in some of the shoes more surreal moments.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-03

Audio

This season continues the tradition of previous seasons with an orchestral soundtrack to match the thematic tone of the series. These tracks also feature a variety of humming and ululating vocals to reinforce the animistic spirituality of Viking culture. There are some interesting moments in this season which has the audio playing a companion beat to the growing tension and build up in these particular sequences. Overall, it suits the series quite well and the opening credit song is as good as ever.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-04

Extras

It’s always a pleasure to hear Michael Hurst speak about the production of the show and the artistic intent behind many of the narrative choices. The commentary he provides alongside Linus Roache (who plays Ecbert in the show) is both entertaining and illuminating. In particular, I found his discussion of ‘truth vs accuracy’ in historical fiction to be interesting. Specifically he talks about the fact that although Vikings is not quite entirely accurate in its portrayal of historical events and what historians know about the Vikings themselves, he aims to relay certain truths about their culture and identity through the show. That being said, one of my favourite comments from the show was Hirst speaking about how he was toying with the idea of presenting Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) as a god… so yes, Vikings aims to entertain more than educate.

Vikings-season-three-screenshot-05

Overall

So I can earnestly say that I enjoyed this season of Vikings very much. The narrative is excellent throughout the season, except for a few sub-stories here and there which feel like filler. The direction is great with some interesting visuals in certain episodes and the production values have reached a new high. The soundtrack is of a similarly high quality and compliments the action nicely. The DVD extras are also fun to enjoy and provide a nice view into the minds behind the series. Overall, this is a very season for a very good show and I have no qualms with recommending this show to anyone who thinks they would be interested in it.
