Corpse Party 3DS Review

Corpse Party

Developers: Team GrisGris, 5pb.
Publisher: XSEED Games
Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Release: Available Now
Price: $49.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

The first entry in the Corpse Party series has never been more accessible than it is now. Initially released for the PSP back in 2011, those looking to get into the series will now find that they can access it either through the PC or now on the Nintendo 3DS. That being said, while the PC version released earlier this year is more of a remake of the original PC release eight years ago, this 3DS release is a remake of the PSP version. With Corpse Party for 3DS now available, is it worth diving into?

Story

During a stormy night a group of students are telling ghost stories as a sort of, going away party for one of their friends who will be moving away. While the class representative Ayumi is telling a particularly scary story, their teacher arrives and frightens them all. Bringing with her Yuka, Satoshi’s younger sister, she tells the group to wrap things up. Before the group splits up, Ayumi suggest that they perform a special doll ritual to ensure that they all remain friends forever.

corpse-party-3ds-screenshot-006Although the group is warned that if things go wrong, something terrible will happen the group continues to go through with the act. After things go horribly awry, the nine members wake up to find themselves almost entirely separated from one another and surrounded by a hellish landscape littered with broken windows, dilapidated woodwork, and worst of all… dead bodies and gore everywhere.

It isn’t long before these displaced survivors find themselves encountering hostile spirits that are all too eager to fill the halls of the haunted school of Heavenly Host with more death. With death a constant possibility, players step into the shoes of multiple characters over the course of five chapters where they must explore the school and try to unravel the mysteries that lie within in an effort to find out why they ended up there and also how to escape with their lives.

corpse-party-3ds-screenshot-007As you navigate through the five available chapters in Corpse Party it will quickly become clear that the title is one that favors a little trial and error as it is entirely possible to stumble upon an event that will either immediately result in a bad end, or lock you into an early end for the chapter, resulting in the player needing to go through once again in order to find the true ending. This means that players will often need to think of the game as being one of trial and error and one that can unfortunately force the players through a number of repeated scenes thanks to the save system.

Despite this negative, Corpse Party masterfully manipulates players by fleshing out many of the main characters and getting players invested in whether or not they will live or die. The title employs its own brand of psychological horror that the series has come to be known for and although the tone of the game can shift wildly thanks to some odd things that the characters say or a girl’s inability to go to the bathroom anywhere but a toilet, those who want to play a horror game will still be satisfied here.

corpse-party-3ds-screenshot-008It is worth noting that this 3DS version of the game also offers players some additional story segments that have to be unlocked by obtaining certain conditions, a few of which are rather difficult to discover, that help flesh out the story a little bit more. These are new additions on top of what was already available in the PSP release meaning those who do want to revisit the halls of Heavenly Host will be able to enjoy a few extras here and there.

Gameplay

For those unfamiliar with the Corpse Party titles, players will need to navigate through the halls of Heavenly Host Elementary from a top-down perspective while trying to find clues all while avoiding various traps as well as spirits and others that wish to do them harm. There is an HP system to worry about but this rarely comes into play.

An interesting aspect of Corpse Party’s gameplay is the fact that while exploring a level and interacting with objects in the world there are very few indications that what the player did is actually the correct thing to do. In fact simply activating certain items, or forgetting to grab an item, may lock you into a bad end as mentioned earlier with no warning until it is already too late. This means players will need to use their best judgment to avoid an early end. It is worth noting that thanks to save files being limited to candles scattered around levels that if players do end up messing up, they will need to often replay entire scenes that are unfortunately unskippable and can only be fast-forwarded through by speeding the text along.

corpse-party-3ds-screenshot-1Add to the fact that the creepy hallways and entities that players will be encountering work so well together and players will need to be on their toes quite often or run the risk of dying as well. That being said, sometimes finding these bad ends and unlocking extra chapters does help expand the game a bit more so don’t be too afraid to stumble around a bit and be sure to read the various notes left behind by those who couldn’t make it out alive.

Visuals & Audio

Being limited to the 3DS’ screen actually works quite well for Corpse Party and thanks to the character sprites being reworked and the artwork for the character portraits being updated a bit, players will find a nice looking cast of characters that are vibrantly portrayed against the often grisly backdrop that they are set against. The designs of the school are rather simplistic but thanks to some rather gruesome designs and a lot of effort being put into creating a foreboding atmosphere, players will often feel on edge. There are various pieces of artwork for major scenes and it is worth noting that the only time 3D is actually used is during these art pieces as it is disabled during general gameplay.

corpse-party-3ds-screenshot-2

It is worth noting that this release still only offers the original Japanese voice track for the game but this works well enough thanks to the fact that the voice work is handled incredibly well, especially when something terrifying is happening. This is partially due to the fact that players should really play this game with headphones of some sort as spoken dialogue, creaking floors, screams, and whispers are all recorded binaurally to immerse players in the experience.

Overall

Corpse Party’s release on the 3DS may be quite a few years after the original and somewhat distanced from the rest of the storyline, as it currently only continues through PSP and PS Vita titles, but it does come across as the best version of the game so far. The PSP version was already a noticeable improvement over the PC release and this improves upon that further by adding some extra story segments to an already incredibly creepy and well-written narrative that few horror titles can offer.

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension Review

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension

Developer: Koei Tecmo
Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed)
Release: Available Now
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Koei Tecmo surprised many last year by bringing Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence to Western audiences as the strategy title only occasionally makes an appearance outside of Japan but it looks like they were quite successful with the original release. That is because they have also released Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension, an expanded version of the original release, in the West as well. So now that this version is available for fans, is it worth picking up?

Story

The story found in Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension remains very much the same as fans of the previous title will remember as it is set within the Sengoku Era of Japan though the choices for various scenarios to play through have been expanded. A number of smaller historic events and exchanges between figureheads of the era are also given some extra attention here and there.

nobunagas-ambition-sphere-of-influence-ascension-screenshot-26This helps give the era a bit of extra life while also keeping fans of the Sengoku period a little something extra to enjoy. It is worth noting that the localization effort for the game is a little barebones at times, with some translated text coming off as incredibly stilted and other times very repetitive so be prepared for that.

Gameplay

While any good strategy game offers layers upon layers of complexity for players to delve into, the Nobunaga’s Ambition series has always been a difficult one to plunge into and that remained true in the previous entry. It is almost essential that players take part in tutorial missions in order to understand the various mechanics that are on play as well as how to properly navigate the admittedly messy and overcomplicated menus that players will spend most of their time in.

Successfully learning everything you can from the tutorial is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this game however as the more power a player is given, the more they will have to manage at any given time. This means that while players can simply choose to start as a retainer, meaning they are given a small piece of land to manage rather than an entire kingdom, they will immediately have to be concerned about keeping rescources high. This includes labor, which allows men to perform tasks such as building, working on diplomacy to gain truce, planting crops to keep your people alive, and simply waiting for each task to be completed by your group or assigned to you by your lord.

nobunagas-ambition-sphere-of-influence-ascension-screenshot-49If players are so keen, they can rise up the ranks in their kingdom if they choose to serve under a daimyo or branch off entirely, joining a new force or starting your own bid to rule over all of Japan. The more territories you claim, the more land you possess which can make you a target as you grow near enemy villages. It is worth noting that the city building this time around is far more refined as players will find that various town upgrades and their placements around a city will provide various bonuses depending on their location. This allows players to potentially min-max certain elements of some cities while also giving areas a life of their own by making them look entirely different from other locations.

Generals each have a large variety of techniques that can greatly assist on the battlefield, which keeps things from getting too tedious overall. Battles are a bit more revamped this time around as players not only have a variety of different options, with siege battles now being included so players can choose to siege a location or repel one, as well as take part in a naval conflict in an effort to attack an enemy in a new, possibly unprepared, way. On top of this, rather than simply staring at the battlefield players are now able to take on a more up close and personal view where they can focus on a general’s unit and issue specific orders that help buff their units and debuff others while also activating various other formations and powers. This doesn’t really play too much of a role in most battles, unless they are really evenly matched without player intervention, but it does keep things interesting.

nobunagas-ambition-sphere-of-influence-ascension-screenshot-16Of course conflict is only one option available to players as they can continue to grow their power through political marriages and gaining friendship with other units in an effort to swing them to your side. These things grow more complicated the more power a player has, so as mentioned before it is best to start out small rather than as a lord immediately or else you’ll need to manage far more than simply a few people’s happiness at once, instead you’ll need to worry about keeping officers happy, worry about spying on other lords, and much more though this also means that players will often be able to take on various problems however they see fit, making this a great entry for fans of strategy games.

Visuals & Audio

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension hasn’t seen a whole lot of visual improvements over the original entry in the series. The various changes to the civic development and the ability to get a closer view on combat is a nice plus and hlps keep things fresh but don’t expect a whole lot of attention to detail in some regards, especially since battles and some textures are incredibly simplistic looking.

nobunagas-ambition-sphere-of-influence-ascension-screenshot-21That being said, the drawings of character portraits remain a huge positive as the amount of detail put into giving each character a unique look, at least through their portrait, is appreciated. As far as the soundtrack is concerned, players can expect quite a few pieces of music that fit the period well plus a number of heavier tunes to match up with action of a battle.

Overall

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension adds extra layers to an already incredibly complex strategy game that will leave fans of the genre pleased with the amount of possibilities at their fingertips while also leaving newcomers a bit befuddled. With a tutorial to help players get a long, most of their time with the game will still be spent struggling against the various interfaces while also testing their skills along the way, making for a title that will take a while to learn but is satisfying once you do.

MAJOR Miitomo UPDATE OUT NOW BRINGS NEW FEATURES AND NEW WAYS TO INTERACT WITH FRIENDS

MAJOR Miitomo UPDATE OUT NOW BRINGS NEW FEATURES AND NEW WAYS TO INTERACT WITH FRIENDS

Send private messages, customise rooms and share in more ways than ever before

11th November, 2016 – When Nintendo’s first smart-device app, Miitomo, launched in March, it set the stage for future mobile games like the upcoming Super Mario Run. Miitomo has received a major update that adds even more ways for players to express themselves and communicate with friends and is out now.

After downloading the free update, users can immediately enhance their social adventures by sending private messages to any of their friends who also have the Miitomo app, customising their in-game Mii character’s room with things like posters and Nintendo-themed wallpaper and sharing their answers and outfits with even more Miitomo users.

Here is a taste of some of the new things users can do after downloading the free Miitomo update:

  • Private messages: After downloading the update, users can send private messages to anyone on their friends list. Users can set the expression of their Mii, and either a user’s main Mii character or a Sidekick Mii will personally deliver the in-app message to the friend.
  • Room customisation: Rooms can be decorated with custom flooring and wallpaper, which can both be collected for free in the in-app Miitomo Drop game or by completing in-app actions. Some of the wallpaper is even inspired by some of Nintendo’s key franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. Rooms can also be decorated with posters, adorned with Miifoto images or even real-life photos contained on the user’s smart device. Each room can hold up to eight posters. Poster spots, which each hold one poster, can be purchased individually for $1.49 from the in-game store.
  • Style Central: Dressing up in the latest outfits in Miitomo is a big part of the fun. With the new Style Central feature, users can submit up to three of their favourite custom outfits a day to share with other users. These other users can browse the submitted outfits to ‘like’ them or try them on. By sharing outfits, users receive My Nintendo points that can be redeemed for fun Nintendo rewards. Visit https://my.nintendo.com/ for more information about My Nintendo.
  • Answer Central: One of the main features of Miitomo is answering fun questions and sharing those answers with others. The new Answer Central hub displays a public list of questions and answers that anyone can browse or comment on. This opens up the social interactions to a much wider base.
  • Sidekick Mii characters: Sidekick Mii characters are controlled by the account user, but play secondary roles to the main Mii. Sidekicks have their own rooms, can be dressed and can even be set to public or private. Up to 100 Sidekick Mii characters can be assigned to the main user.
  • Easier to Use: A new timeline feature allows you to see your friends’ latest answers without the need to speak to other Mii characters. You will also be able to see your friends’ customised rooms.

Alongside the update, Miitomo has launched in more countries including Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. For more information about Miitomo, visit https://miitomo.com/en/.

A major new Miitomo update available now allows users to send private messages, customise rooms, use Sidekick Mii characters, and much more.

Experience the POWER of big data with watch_dogs® 2 predictive world

Experience the POWER of big data with watch_dogs® 2 predictive world

Developed in collaboration with the Psychometrics Centre of the University of Cambridge and based on scientific research, Predictive World processes users’ data to generate accurate predictions on them and their behaviours.

Sydney, Australia – November 11, 2016 – Today, Ubisoft® revealed Predictive World, an online experience that reveals what a powerful, all-seeing algorithm can predict about an individual based on their online footprints, public information and Facebook Likes.

A World of Data

Every day, we create 2.5 billion gigabytes of data, from our last purchase online to our likes on social media platforms. Nowadays, most recruiters scrutinize our social networks before even looking at our resumes. When we apply for a loan to our bank, its acceptance is assessed depending on our private health data. And in some US cities, the police can apprehend individuals based on algorithms that can predict their criminal potential thanks to data such as age, ethnicity, gender and social background.

The dangers of Big Data and predictive algorithms are themes at the heart of the narrative of Ubisoft’s upcoming open world action-adventure game WATCH_DOGS 2. The hero Marcus Holloway is wrongly profiled as a potential criminal by a city-wide operating system collecting & analysing data on every citizen.

When Fiction meets Reality

Predictive World and WATCH_DOGS 2 are strong reminders that in today’s ultra-connected world, the systematic collection and processing of private data on a massive scale marks a new step in an era of rising surveillance and might represent a threat to personal freedom. Similarly to what happens in WATCH_DOGS 2, Predictive World lets users imagine how corporations, governments, or criminals could use their personal data against them, and help players understand the context of the game.

Predictive World has been built based on an algorithm developed by the Psychometrics Centre of the University of Cambridge, using a wide range of verified data sources such as psychological and social media data from over 6 million research participants, and a bespoke infrastructure designed for this project containing 6.4 billion data points. Collecting and processing users’ digital footprints and combining predictions with large amounts of open data, the system is able to make more than 60 predictions about the individual, from personality traits and intelligence to life expectancy and even financial risk propensity.

An interactive innovative experience

This dynamic and adaptable experience makes tangible the relationship between gender and salary, between city location and risk of being a victim of homicide. More importantly, users can interact with the predictions, change outcomes and understand the relationship between the different variables. By providing unexpected insights across many areas of life, Predictive World gives a glimpse of the power of data and how anyone having access to it can build accurate profiles of individuals.

To go even further, VICE released “User Profiled”, a series of documentary videos sponsored by Ubisoft with the purpose of educating and giving an in-depth look at the dangers of Big Data in today’s society. You can watch Part 1 and Part 2 of the documentary online.

To try Predictive World and see what your digital footprints reveal about you, visit: watchdogs.com/predictiveworld .

WATCH_DOGS 2 will be available worldwide on consoles November 15, 2016 and on Windows PC November 29, 2016. For more information about WATCH_DOGS 2, please visit watchdogs.ubisoft.com.

ADAM WOLFE’S EPISODE 4 NOW AVAILABLE ALONG WITH THE FULL BUNDLE ON iOS AND STEAM

Step Into The Troubled Shoes of our Protagonist, Adam Wolfe, For The First Time or The Last Time as He Solves The Chilling Mystery to Find His Sister

Belgrade, Serbia – November 10, 2016 – Available now by independent developer Mad Head Games is Episode 4 “Zero Hour” as well as the full episodic bundle of Adam Wolfe, a new IP in the Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure (HOPA) genre, which successfully launched its first two episodes on October 6, 2016 to fantastic reviews from the gaming media as well as praises from its communities.

Since the game’s Episode 1 launch, Adam Wolfe has captured the interest of HOPA players from around the world. Episode 4 will serve as the culmination to the memorable episodic adventure with the game’s tortured protagonist, Adam Wolfe. Episode 4 “Zero Hour” is now available as an individual download or as part of the bundle.

Adam Wolfe’s full bundle offers all four episodes at one price for players to enjoy forever with no further purchases needed. The bundle is available at a special launch discounted price of $8.99, £6.99 and €8,99 on iOS via the App Store and for PC and Mac via Steam. The game features an English voiceover and is fully localized in English, French, German, Russian, simplified Chinese and Serbian.

Navigate as the supernatural investigator, Adam Wolfe, as he deals with the shadows of his past while solving mysterious cases in the seedy underbelly of San Francisco in this neo-noir game that offers unique puzzles, a gripping story, incredible hand-drawn art, action set-pieces and a cinematic quality to the HOPA genre. Use your wits, your detective instincts and, when all else fails, your six-shooter in this psychological thriller packed with challenging gameplay. Secret societies, unnatural afflictions and ancient covenants await in Adam Wolfe‘s pulse pounding four episodes.

In the first two episodes – “The Ancient Flame” and “The Devil You Know” – Adam Wolfe is haunted by the disappearance of his sister, Allie. He struggles with his own demons as he investigates occult crimes, supernatural occurrences and the horrific reality of San Francisco crime syndicates. As players solve the mysteries before them, they slowly unravel a conspiracy that could lead Adam to his missing sibling, or simultaneously drag him down into the dark abyss of the city, forever.

The story continues in Adam Wolfe’s Episode 3 “The Lady and The Painter” and Episode 4 “Zero Hour” as Adam delves deeper into The Timeless – a cult discovered to have potential ties to the disappearance of Allie. Guided, quite literally, by ghosts of the past; Adam looks into the mysterious painter as players continue to unravel the mystery set before them. But nothing will prepare them for how the story ends during “Zero Hour”, the episode that serves as the culmination to the memorable episodic adventure. Will Adam finally reunite with Allie or will he continue his descent into the dark abyss?

On Steam and iOS, Adam Wolfe’s full bundle is available for $8.99, £6.99 and €8,99 at a limited launch discounted price.
