Tunbridge Wells, England — 13th December, 2016 – Marvelous Europe today announces that Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, the highly-anticipated action title set within the much-beloved Fate universe, will release in Europe on 20th January, 2017 for the PlayStation®4 and the PlayStation®Vita. Alongside the standard release, a limited production of the European exclusive Moon Crux Edition bundle containing 7.5” by 6.3” hardcover art book featuring over 100 pages of high-quality artwork and backstory from Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, a pack of sixteen collectible 3” by 5” cards depicting each of the game’s Servants, and a 24” by 17” cloth poster, all housed within a high quality collectible presentation box.

Furthermore, the digital version of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star for PlayStation®4 is now available for pre-order from the PlayStation®Store. Pre-orders will allow people to obtain the exclusive “Shackled Bride Outfit” DLC for Nero upon launch of the game for both platforms.

The digital PlayStation®Vita game will not have a pre-order campaign, however, for the first two weeks upon launch the PlayStation®Store will feature a Day One Edition bundle, which will include the standard Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star game for PlayStation®Vita, alongside the exclusive DLC outfit “Cold-Blooded Warden” for Gilgamesh, once again, for both platforms.

To prime fans for the upcoming launch, a brand new and exciting trailer previewing the many Servants taking part in this war was released today

Developed by Marvelous Inc. and expanding upon the extensive Fate universe with a story from acclaimed series writer Kinoko Nasu (of Fate/stay night fame), Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star features a diverse cast of “Servants” – ancient warriors of legend and imagination, always at their Masters’ orders – who survived the Holy Grail War that took place on the Moon. In a future watched over by the all-powerful lunar super computer Moon Cell Automaton, these champions now battle for dominance over this digital realm, known as “SE.RA.PH.” This story takes place after the events described in Fate/EXTRA, and depicts the world after that previous Holy Grail War.

Players will experience the story of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star from the independent perspectives of the three heroine Servants and face off against foes from a variety of Fate productions, including characters from Fate/EXTRA, Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, in fast-paced action. A new form change battle mechanic called Moon Crux debuts in this entry to match its series-first gameplay style, transforming the player-controlled Servants and granting them considerable powers that allow them to devastate enemies and take formidable challenges head-on. The game will contain the original Japanese voices with English text.

The Collector’s and Europe exclusive ‘Moon Crux Edition’ has a price of £64.99/€74.99 for PlayStation®4 and £59.99/€69.99 for PlayStation®Vita, and is available for pre-order on the Marvelous Europe Store (www.marvelousgames.com).

Developed by Marvelous Inc. and published in Europe by Marvelous Europe Limited, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star is planned to launch on January 20th 2017 for PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®Vita. This title has been rated PEGI 12, USK 12 and ACB M.

Basement Preview

Basement

Developer: Halfbus
Publisher: Halfbus
Platform: Linux, Mac, Windows (Previewed)
Release Date: 30 April 2015
Price: $8.99 USD – Available Here

Basement is a business management sim that lets players build their drug empire from a few rooms in a small basement into a sprawling, multi-building behemoth. The game started its life out at the Ludum Dare 29 game jam and snagged 11th place at the competition. Basement was then successfully funded a few months later on Kickstarter, allowing Halfbus to turn Basement into a full game.

Currently, Basement is on Steam Early Access. The version we had a chance to preview has most of the main gameplay features implemented along with six scenarios and a sandbox mode. There is still a few features that the developers have not yet implemented, but the Basement still feels like a pretty coherent game in its current state.

Basement doesn’t have much of a story right now. Whether a full blown campaign is in the future or just some small dialogue is in the future is yet to be known. Currently, there isn’t much writing at all. The tutorial is mostly visual in nature and is enough to get players started.

Breaking Basement down to its most basic gameplay, players will need to manufacture drugs in the basement of their building, transport the goods to the ground floor, and then sell it to customers. Employees keep the operation moving, taking breaks as necessary to keep their stamina up. Players will need to manage building layouts and employees to succeed in the game. Buildings are run on power provided by generators built in the basement. Each room has its own construction limitations, power requirements, and upgrade path that will increase the room’s power consumption in exchange for better stats. To create the most efficient layout, players will need to design the shortest travel routes for their employees while maintaining just enough power generators to keep their business running smoothly. Multiple buildings add a layer of complexity to the game. Spreading out the player’s criminal enterprise over multiple buildings decreases the impact police raids have. On the other hand, the business will need to pay to maintain a transportation network that will shuttle drugs and employees between buildings.

Employee management involves hiring and upkeep of employees who will manufacture, transport, and sell drugs along with attack and defend against enemies. Employees have a hiring fee and a daily upkeep fee that needs to be paid. Those with better stats will cost more and employee stats improve as they gain experience or workout in the training room. Combat is a simple affair in Basement, but one with serious consequences. Players can raid buildings and take them over by sending their staffers over, but the knife cuts both ways as police raids and customers having bad trips can ambush staff. There is not much strategy to combat right now, as each character will deal a set amount of damage every second. It seems that the best strategy for combat is to simply overwhelm the enemy in numbers and hope to keep as many employees alive as possible. Players are able to heal injured employees at the recovery room at the cost of removing them from the production line. Combined with a poorly designed room layout and an injured worker may have to be shuttled across the map to be healed and then returned back to work, resulting in a huge loss in profits.

Basement’s late game becomes a bit of a juggling act. On one hand, players need to keep pumping out ludicrous amounts of drugs to pay the bills and keep the profits rolling in. On the other hand, pressure from the police rises, forcing players to either sacrifice money to bribe the police to go away or employees to defeat the intruders.

While Basement is not the most complex game in its current state, it is an entertaining casual game. The simple controls and low system requirements make the game ideal for touch-based laptops and tablets. The six scenarios currently in the game are a good stepping stone into the sandbox mode and grow in difficulty at a good rate. The scenarios serve as a good foundation for a fully-fledged campaign mode to grow from.

Basement’s audio/visual experience is excellent. There is no voice acting, but the sound effects are enjoyable. The soundtrack has a dark, industrial sound that fits the game’s gritty atmosphere. The soundtrack is a bit small at the moment, so I hope more tracks are added as the game’s development progresses. The art style has a retro 16-bit flair and focuses on a dark colour palette to match the game’s gritty soundtrack.

Basement’s has come a long way from its humble beginnings at the Ludum Dare game jam. Halfbus has turned a neat idea into a decent casual strategy game in its current state. Based on the road map, it looks like some much-needed depth is on the horizon. With hope, Basement will give everyone the opportunity to be their very own Breaking Bad.

My Love Story!! Complete Collection Review

My Love Story!! Complete Collection

Studio: Madhouse
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $99.98 – Available Here

Overview

When it comes to shoujo based series, many viewers tend to write them off as being fairly predictable and while this is true in some cases, as we’ve seen in recent years the shoujo genre has come quite a long way. In fact, Sentai Filmworks’ release of My Love Story!! in North America is proof of that concept. With the company opting to release the entire twenty four episode series in one package, viewers are in for quite a lot of content here but does this unique love story play out in a satisfying manner?

Story

Takeo Goda has always found himself to be incredibly popular with the boys in his class and even when he graduates middle school and advances to high school he leaves his classmates and younger friends behind in tears. That doesn’t stop him from taking part in a standard tradition in Japanese school graduations, attempting to confess your feelings to your crush. The only problem is, the girl he likes just so happens to be confessing her own feelings to his best friend, Makoto.

This is par for the course for Takeo as his friend since childhood, Makoto, has an aloof aura with pretty boy features that attracts almost every girl that lays eyes on him. On the complete other end of the spectrum Takeo strikes an imposing figure by standing nearly two heads taller than almost every other male student in his class and towering over any of his female classmates. With an exuberant personality that will literally have him in your face when he is excited and a kind heart, he wins over those who get to know him quite easily but comes off as a daunting and intimidating person to those who don’t.

Quick to act despite his dense nature and occasional lack of commonsense, Takeo never lets his failures at interacting with others or misses at love get him down. Even when those he saves from danger credit Makoto thanks to his approachable nature over Takeo he shrugs it off. As such the two form a tight nit pair who continue to travel to high school together. Only this time something is a bit different as Takeo witnesses a man harassing a girl on the same train as him. Using his strength he manages to subdue the molester before things go south and save the girl, who graciously thanks him with tears in her eyes.

Takeo may have had feelings for others before but he falls in love with this girl at first sight as she gratefully looks up at him. After meeting with the petite girl, named Rinko Yamato, a few more times the pair learn that she is quite skilled at baking. Takeo’s dense nature may take some time to get through, but through some manipulation from Makoto he learns what viewers will easily pick up on, that Rinko had also fallen in love with Takeo when he saved her and that their feelings are in fact mutual.

One of the best aspects of My Love Story!! is the fact that viewers aren’t left with the whole “will they or won’t they” aspect for very long. While the initial few episodes may have Takeo believing that Rinko is looking elsewhere for love with his own actions only hurting her feelings, that problem is quickly resolved. Instead viewers can watch as the two clumsily maneuver their relationship together as both of them are completely inexperienced at being boyfriend and girlfriend. With Takeo’s huge presence but kind heart and Rinko’s shy nature but determined attitude this series quickly becomes an enjoyable treat that is as sweet as Rinko’s cooking turns out to be (what with how Takeo gobbles everything she makes down).

While both Takeo and Rinko make for an endearing couple that is always bringing something a bit new to the table as the mismatched pair go about their lives, the supporting cast is also handled quite well. The story about the Red Ogre Who Cried, a Japanese children’s tale, is often mentioned as Makoto plays as Takeo’s blue ogre/wingman who not only helps him understand certain aspects about girls that he never would have thought of but also stands up for his friend whenever he can. To go along with Makoto we also have the surprising appearance of his older sister and even the couple’s parents get involved in something that has become a rarity in anime, helping give My Love Story!! a bit of extra life and character interaction. This is especially true in regards to Makoto and Takeo’s relationship as friends. More than a few times throughout the series we are told stories about their past and how they grew to be so close over the years, developing a “bromance.”

It also helps that, for the most part, My Love Story!! usually avoids many of the standard shoujo clichés that often rear their head. This makes it a series that those who tend to veer away from the genre will enjoy, especially if they love the comedic elements of Takeo’s boisterous nature, visual gags, and the pairing of the couple. That being said, the story does tend to throw in drama here and there and these elements do tend to pull out the old cliché elements such as a rival out of nowhere, jealousy due to poor communication, or some threat to the relationship. Thankfully these tend to be resolved quickly enough and often in heartwarming fashion, making this a series definitely worth trying out.

Visuals

As mentioned before, one of the most common visual gags in My Love Story!! comes from the fact that Takeo is so much larger than the rest of the cast. Not only does he often tower over the boys, but his girlfriend Rinko stands at half of his total height. This is often represented by the fact that he has to duck through standard openings or can easily pluck someone off the ground without any issues. The size disparity works well alongside the fairly standard shoujo elements that appear from time to time.

While these shoujo scenes, where the backgrounds turn all colorful and sparkly while focusing on the main couple, are used often and are a standard trope in the genre, the amusing faces that Takeo generally makes when he is embarrassed help make up for this fact. Overall though viewers should be prepared for a series that is commonly uses pastel coloration to highlight important scenes and more softer tones for standard scenes with Takeo being the only character really given special treatment to help make him stand out even more.

Audio

My Love Story!! has been released in North America with both the original Japanese voice track as well as an English dub track giving viewers both options. The voice work in the series is handled nicely by the English cast with Andrew Love performing admirably as the larger than life Takeo and Tia Ballard fitting the role of the shy but often eager Rinko. There may be those who prefer the original Japanese but those who prefer the English option will find no problems here.

The soundtrack for the series is fairly standard one for a shoujo based series while the opening and closing theme songs actually work well in regard to the relationship between the characters. The opening song “Miraikei Answer” is performed by Trustrick and both sounds and is represented with Rinko chasing after Takeo while the ending theme Shiawase no Arika” by Local Connect is more along the lines of Takeo’s viewpoint to the relationship. That being said, while the songs and animations pair well together, neither theme really stands out in any memorable way.

Extras

Unfortunately Sentai Filmworks has only offered the release of My Love Story!! with the predictable bonus features that include clean versions of the opening and ending animations as well as trailers for other releases from the company.

Overall

There are many elements of My Love Story!! that may initially make it feel like something Western fans have seen before as Takeo’s imposing stature and exuberant attitude may liken him to the “Beast” but his extremely kind heart and willingness to go the extra mile for anyone as well as the love story that forms between him and Rinko create a romance story that rarely feels like something we have seen before. With plenty of great comedic moments of all kinds, touching romantic developments, and a pair of characters you genuinely want to root for My Love Story!! is definitely a series you do not want to pass up.
