Welcome to the Neon Jungle – Yakuza 0 is Now Available in Australia!

Welcome to the Neon Jungle – Yakuza 0 is Now Available in Australia!

Sydney, Australia — Jan. 24, 2016 – Dateline, Dec. 9, 1988. Japan’s bubble economy is in full swing, and so are the vices and expensive tastes of its denizens, and everybody has a price in Yakuza 0, the prequel to SEGA’s long-running series. The fictional red-light districts of Kamurocho, Tokyo and Sotenbori, Osaka are bursting at the seams for enterprising young criminals to make or take some serious stacks of yen, be it beating up street thugs or running a real estate investment scheme. Players will help shape the foundations of the legendary series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and the nefarious Goro Majima.

Yakuza 0 tells the origin stories of Kazuma Kiryu, the rising Dragon of Dojima, and Goro Majima, before he’s known as the Mad Dog of Shimano, as they fight, hustle, flirt, and dance their way through the seedy underbelly of Japan. Taking place in a chilly but electric Kamurocho, Tokyo in December 1988, Kiryu’s story follows his steady ascension up the ranks of the Dojima yakuza crime family until he gets blamed for a debt collection gone wrong. Kiryu must utilise his cunning and his fists in order to regain his honour and save the reputation of his father figure, Shintaro Kazama. Meanwhile, Goro Majima is running a popular cabaret in Osaka, but he wants more than anything to rejoin the yakuza clan that ousted him. He’ll need to complete a series of impossible tasks set by his bosses, but will these tasks push Majima past the point of no return?

Yakuza 0 Features:

  • The Dragon’s Origins: What lies in a man’s past defines his future, and in this case, we learn a lot about what inspires Kiryu down the paths he takes in the rest of the Yakuza series. Plus, you don’t get to be called “Dragon” without being able to knock a few heads. Combat styles can be hot-swapped during fights for some of the most intense battles in the Yakuza series to date.
  • Embrace the Mad Dog: For the first time in a numbered game, long-time NPC Goro Majima is playable. With his own fighting style, abilities, and his penchant for turning sleaze into profit, stepping into the role of Yakuza’s most eccentric character will provide some eye-opening insight.
  • The Decadence of the 1980s in Japan: Cash rules everything in the world of Yakuza 0, and in the game, there are a million ways to spend, make, or take money. From cash spilling out of the pockets of gang members you fight to Telephone Clubs, Disco Halls, or even Pocket Circuit car races, there are tons of ways to be a well-to-do gangster.

We’ll also be rolling out a few patch updates in the next couple weeks that’ll automatically add a righteous amount of free downloadable content to players who own the game. Each batch contains content such as new outfits, weapons, items, and crafting components that’ll keep players looking fresh and give them an extra edge. The first DLC pack is already live and three additional batches will be made available every week until Feb. 14. These goodies can be accessed in-game by talking to Bob the clown in front of the temple/shrine in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori.

Yakuza 0 was localised by SEGA® of America, Inc. and is available now for the PlayStation 4 in physical and digital formats in Australia. For more information, please visit: yakuza.sega.com/yakuza0

Minit Sets Off For Adventure, Sixty Seconds at a Time

Minit Sets Off For Adventure, Sixty Seconds at a Time
The Old Lighthouse – Independent game label Devolver Digital have announced Minit, a lo-fi adventure from Kitty Calis, Jan Willem Nijman, Jukio Kallio & Dominik Johann. Minit will be playable at this weekend’s PAX South (January 27 – 29) and release on PC and (maybe.. maybe.. probably yes) on consoles in 2017.

Minit is a peculiar little adventure played sixty seconds at a time. Journey outside the comfort of your home to help unusual folk, uncover countless secrets, and overcome dangerous foes, all in hopes of lifting a rather unfortunate curse which makes the day end after just one minute.

“The Devolver Digital Monetization Department are working on in-app purchases for Minit that will allow players to pay a dollar or watch an hour of advertisements to extend each life one more second,” noted Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “Stay tuned for this and other great ways to frivolously spend more money you probably don’t have in Devolver Digital games you might never actually play.”

Minit is set to arrive on PC and console (again, maybe) in mid 2017. Keep up with development updates and news about the game by following @kittycalis, @jwaaaap, @jukiokallio, @zerstoerer, and @devolverdigital on Twitter. All of them. No more, no less!

Brut@l Preview

Brut@l

Developer: Stormcloud Games
Publisher: Rising Star Games
Platform: PlayStation 4, PC (Previewed)
Release Date: February 9
Price: TBA – Available Here

Brut@l is making the jump to PC after spending several months as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. The rogue-like dungeon crawler is launching on Steam very soon. We had the chance to get an early look ahead of the game’s February launch.

Brut@l is inspired by old school dungeon crawlers, mixing a hack ’n slash with rogue-like gameplay mechanics. To start the game, players choose one of four classes: Warrior, Amazon, Mage, or Ranger. The player’s health and starting skills are set based on their class. Players are dropped into the dungeon with only their bare fists, an unlit torch, and a shield that doubles as a ranged weapon. Mages swap the shield and their fists for a staff that fires magical bolts at the cost of mana. While the initial skills are chosen based on class, players are free to choose skills from any of the four trees as they level up. This allows players the flexibility to change their play style in response to the drops that appear in their dungeon seed.

Each dungeon contains 26 floors that are randomly generated with the last floor occupied by the final boss. Armour, potion materials, and arrows are scattered throughout the dungeon on pedestals, in chests, and in destroyable containers. Weapon blueprints are found in a similar manner, but require players to collect certain letters to craft the weapon. Once the weapon is crafted, players can use certain coloured letters to enchant their weapons with a variety of different elemental effects. Potions can also be crafted using materials found in the dungeons. The effects of the potions changes every time a new dungeon is started, so players must experiment on either themselves or the enemy each playthrough to discover the effects of each coloured potion.

Brut@l’s armour system is rather novel. Unlike most dungeon crawlers, Brut@l treats armour as an expendable resource. Each piece of armour found awards players 25 points of armour, but players lose armour points as they take damage. The system puts a greater emphasis on player skill, rewarding players who can dodge and block damage.

The health system in Brut@l is composed of a hunger bar and the actual hit points itself. Special attack points and mana will only regenerate with points in the hunger bar. The hit points bar is self explanatory: run out of hit points and die. Since Brut@l is a rogue like, death is permanent. The main source of healing is from food, which recovers HP and hunger points, and healing items, which recover only hit points. Players can try to buy themselves some wiggle room by cashing in the gold they find in the dungeon for a chance to earn reincarnations at the altar of the gods.

Combat in Brut@l is on the simpler end of the spectrum of hack ‘n slash games. The character has a melee attack button that can be chained into combos of three. With enough special power and the weapon’s associated skill, players can trigger a lethal strike that can clear out multiple enemies in one go. The shield throw is more of a utility skill than an actual useful ranged attack with its long cooldown and uninspiring damage. The staff can fire off more shots in quick succession, but come at the cost of mana, which takes time to recharge. The bows use arrows that can be found throughout the dungeon. Strangely enough, the bow is supposed to be the Ranger’s bread and butter weapon, but the Ranger must find a blueprint and craft one just like any other class.

Stormcloud Games highly recommends using a controller for Brut@l and I happen to echo their sentiment. The mouse and keyboard controls are passable, but a little clunky. It is clear that Brut@l was originally envisioned for the consoles as the game is more enjoyable with a controller. The game supports swapping key bindings for mouse and keyboard, but the controller layout is standardized. I am not a huge fan of the game’s dodge controls as it takes way too many button presses to be useful.

Brut@l includes a dungeon creator to augment the randomly generated dungeons. Players are given a variety of tiles, enemies, objects to use. To ensure game balance, each enemy and object has a currency cost attached to them and each dungeon level has a limit of 500 points. Once the dungeon is built, the creator must complete a playthrough in the dungeon to validate the layout before the level can be uploaded. I found the tools to be easy use thanks to the simple controls, and I really like the idea of having players beat their own dungeon to prove it is possible to complete.

Brut@l has a distinctive art style that is inspired by all sorts of retro gaming. The game focuses on a black background accented by white ASCII characters to form everything from enemies to weapons. Objects that are imbued with elemental effects are coloured in a neon glow, which stands out nicely from the game. Brut@l’s art style is an incredibly creative way to pay homage to old school ASCII based games like MUDs while still giving Brut@l a very modern look.  The ASCII design is looks great in screenshots, but the black and white colour scheme is not always the most practical thing. In the heat of the action, it can be difficult to visually track the small enemies that like to cling to the player.

The audio experience in Brut@l is standard for a dungeon crawler. The sound effects are solid. The soundtrack is the usual epic fantasy fare.

Brut@l is an interesting take on the classic rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game is simple to learn and will provide a decent challenge for most gamers. The dungeon creator is a nice bonus to augment the randomly generated content. Brut@l’s art style is one of the most creative designs in the last few years. Brut@l looks like it is more than ready for launch.

Debut Trailer Now Live for ‘Rave in the Redwoods’ Zombies DLC in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Sabotage

Debut Trailer Now Live for ‘Rave in the Redwoods’ Zombies DLC in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Sabotage

Actor-Director-Podcaster Kevin Smith Joins the New ‘90s Themed Zombies Co-Op Mode, Alongside Returning Cast including Ike Barinholtz, Seth Green, Jay Pharoah, Sasheer Zamata and Paul Reubens

January 25, 2017 – Activision and Infinity Ward today debuted the gameplay trailer for ‘Rave in the Redwoods,’ the undead survival co-op mode featured in the upcoming first DLC Map Pack for Call of Duty®: Infinite Warfare, Sabotage. Rave in the Redwoods continues the macabre narrative of the Infinite Warfare zombies experience, taking fans through a new storyline where they’ll fight as one of four classic ‘90s characters and battle new varieties of the living dead in an abandoned lakeside summer camp full of twists and turns.

Additionally, ‘90s icon Kevin Smith, filmmaker, actor and podcaster extraordinaire (Mallrats, Clerks), will portray himself with voice and likeness in Rave in the Redwoods. Just like the protagonists, Kevin has been catapulted straight into another twisted horror film helmed by Willard Wyler, the enigmatic movie director villain played with voice and likeness by Paul Reubens (Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, Gotham). Smith has been left for dead in the movie, but through a series of creepy events will help players attempt to escape the campgrounds where zombie ravers have taken over and turned the site into a techno-fueled nightmare.

Fans can watch the debut trailer here

“I told my buddy Jason (Mewes) I was going to be in Call of Duty and he wept tears of joy,” said Kevin Smith. “I used to play Pitfall just because I wanted to be that thin little man jumping over crocodiles, something I could never be in the real world, so ever since I was a little kid I always dreamed of being in a video game.”

The four playable characters from the original story also return, but with fresh, over-the-top ‘90s archetype roles, voiced by Ike Barinholtz (Neighbours, Suicide Squad) as “the Hip Hop Wannabe;” Seth Green (Robot Chicken, Austin Powers) as “the Kandi Raver;” Jay Pharoah (White Famous, Saturday Night Live) as “the Grunge Rocker;” and Slasher Zamata (Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy Schumer) as “the Westside Gangsta.”

In addition to Rave in the Redwoods zombies content, Sabotage will also include four new multiplayer maps:

  • Dominion – A re-imagining of the classic Afghan map from Modern Warfare® 2, now set on Mars, Dominion retains all the memorable landmarks and gameplay of the original, anchored by the crashed ship in the center, with a few enhancements designed to take advantage of the new movement system.
  • Renaissance – Set in Northern Italy, Renaissance pits players against each other on the narrow streets of Venice surrounded by classic architecture and buildings that promote continuous action through the canals and neighbourhoods of this iconic city.
  • Noir – A dark, grimy city map inspired by futuristic Brooklyn at night, Noir is a classic three-lane map set against a backdrop of a dystopian future, filled with cafes and parks surrounding a brutal downtown warzone.
  • Neon – A virtual training center designed for urban warfare, Neon is a unique, digitised battle arena where cars and other structures spawn out of thin air and enemies dissolve into hundreds of pixels when defeated. Middle lane sightlines will cater to long-range players while the outsides of the map allow for quick counter-attacks in close-quarter action.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Sabotage releases on January 31, 2017 first for the PlayStation 4, with other platforms to follow. The game is rated MA15+ for Mature (Blood, Intense Violence, Strong Language).

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Sabotage DLC Map Pack will be available as a standalone pack or via the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Season Pass. The Season Pass can be purchased on its own or obtained as part of the Legacy Pro or Digital Deluxe editions of the game. Season Pass gives discounted access to all four Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare DLC Map Packs released during 2017 (discount based on a Season Pass suggested retail price of AUD$64.95 / NZD$69.95, and four individual DLC Map Packs at a suggested retail price of AUD$19.95/ NZD$22.95 each). Season Pass owners will also receive 10 Rare Supply Drops upon purchase plus 1,000 bonus Salvage Credits to craft new prototype weapons.

New Rings Promo Pranks TV Store Shoppers

Paramount Pictures put together a pretty hilarious/terrifying prank to promote the upcoming film Rings. An appliance store was modified to hide an actress dressed up as Samara behind a false TV that was hidden among a wall of TVs. Many unsuspecting customers were distracted by a salesman demoing televisions showing the Rings trailer when Samara crawled out. The video provides plenty of terrified reactions, ranging from a calm, but urgent walk to the exit to full blown screams as the victim sprinted for the exit.

Rings stars Johnny Galecki, Laura Wiggins, Zach Roerig and Aimee Teegarden in the third film in the Ring franchise. The film is set to hit cinemas in Australia on February 23rd.

Extreme Arcade Racer ‘Moto Racer 4’ Now Available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4

The popular arcade racing series has returned as ‘Moto Racer 4’ is now available on consoles

Moto Racer 4 launch trailer can be viewed here

PARIS – January 24, 2017 – Microïds is pleased to announce that its popular arcade racing series is back on track as ‘Moto Racer 4’ is now available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It can be purchased through retail stores and digitally on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Marketplace for $39.99. The launch gives racing fans the opportunity to enjoy its frantic gameplay that features 2 styles of play with high-speed racing bikes and Motocross through 2 game modes: Asphalt and Dirt.

Moto Racer 4 recaptures the same intensity that made the original trilogy well-known among the racing community, as it’s developed by Microids and Artefacts Studio with supervision from the series’ original creator, Paul Cuisset. “It’s wonderful to see the Moto Racer series take another lap with the release of Moto Racer 4. Both fans and newcomers alike can now remember why arcade racers used to be so much fun, with intense speed and ground breaking leaps that provide the time to pull off a stunt or two while in mid-air. We’re so thrilled that this current generation of console owners can now participate in the Moto Racer series with Moto Racer 4.” Says Paul Cuisset.

Moto Racer 4 consists of 15 single player and multiplayer game modes and features 2-10 players online and local split-screen multiplayer. There are 2 distinct styles of racing to choose from as well; the high-speed racing bikes (Asphalt mode) and the more high-flying and stunt-filled Motocross (Dirt mode). There is also bike and rider customization to choose from to make the journey through the game even more unique.

With the PlayStation VR, players can now completely immerse themselves in 2 modes: Time attack and Hot Lap. In order to offer them more and more sensations, Microïds and Artefact Studios will progressively and freely make all game modes and races, already available in Moto Racer 4, compatible in VR.

Moto Racer 4 is available today, January 24, on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for $39.99.

It is available as a boxed edition through retail outlets and as a digital download on the Xbox Marketplace and PlayStation Store. And no matter which road fans take, they are in for high-octane racing action that provides 2 thrilling styles that alternate between the speed of asphalt mode and the altitude of motocross.
