Resident Evil 7: biohazard Banned Footage Vol. 2 Review

Resident Evil 7: biohazard Banned Footage Vol. 2

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platforms: Xbox One (Reviewed), PlayStation 4, PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $14.99 – Available Here

Overview

With the first set of Banned Footage already available and the second one released a bit later, Resident Evil 7: biohazard fans have had plenty available to them after the main game’s completion. While the first volume offered a variety of different game types, how does the second volume of Banned Footage fair?

Gameplay

Similar to the first collection of Banned Footage, Banned Footage Vol. 2 features a collection of two VHS tapes as well as a bonus game mode with each of these three offering a different type of experience. One is designed as something of a mini-game with a twisted form of BlackJack, another is story focused and explores the Baker family before things went south, and finally a more cheerful type of mode that is utterly ridiculous but offers the most gameplay of the three.

The first video tape is called 21 and while it plays similar to BlackJack, this version only features cards that count from 1 to 10 and considering we are stepping into the shoes of Clancy once again, things are going to be bad. Locked in one of Lucas’ Saw-like contraptions, Clancy must compete against another prisoner being held captive by the Baker family with their lives as the chips. Things start at a rather simple pace, at least as far as Lucas’ machinations go, by putting your fingers on the line with each losing hand costing a finger.

As things grow more desperate eventually the scales are raised to electroshocks that grow in intensity as you lose and even a spinning saw blade that grows ever closer to your face as you lose. In an effort to avoid these punishments Clancy must make his dealt hand 21 or as close as possible in an effort to beat out his competitor. To do this players will also be given a number of special cards that provide special abilities.

These abilities range from adding more cards to your opponent’s hand to doubling the stakes of a current hand and even making it so no more cards can be drawn. These may seem like an easy way to beat out the AI but Lucas is a well-known cheater and he is more than willing to do so to inflict punishment on Clancy. This means he will often attempt to cheat against the player and trying to avoid falling into his traps makes for an enjoyable experience that often is quite random in nature. With three different difficulty modes available players will find this mode quite replayable.

The other video tape comes in the form of Daughters. This single mode places players in the shoes of Zoe, the daughter who attempts to help Ethan out throughout the core storyline, as she experiences the events that happen before the Baker family ends up going crazy. Without delving too deep into the narrative in an effort to avoid spoiling the content, this mode does give players a unique view of the family and the Baker’s home before things started to fall apart. There are two different endings available for the player to unlock in an effort to encourage replaying the mode more than once but unfortunately the actual gameplay here is rather short in nature and you’ll easily be able to experience both endings in under an hour.  This means that while it does provide some great backstory and a new look at the story, Daughters is easily the shortest and weakest part of this second volume.

Finally we have the bonus mode called Jack’s 55th Birthday. Tasked as playing as Mia, players must satisfying Jack Baker’s hunger as he celebrates his birthday while wearing a festive hat and glasses. With each stage set in a different part of the house Mia must run around the house while fighting off Molded wearing funny little hats to gather food.

Each item of food will provide Jack with a certain level of “satisfaction” and you can combine different pieces of food together to create more satisfying food to give to Jack. Players are given a time limit to work with here so it is up to your memory to remember the layout of the house and where to gather items as quick as possible to get high scores.

The reward for getting higher scores in this mode provide players with various unlocks such as weapons and stat boosts. These can give Mia an edge the next time you play through Jack’s Birthday but they do take up inventory space. This means you’ll often need to balance your boosts to speed or damage with food carrying space. This mode is a delightful addition that will keep players who like the game’s combat system intrigued with the house filled with decorative balloons and festive enemies.

Overall

The second volume of Banned Footage for Resident Evil 7: biohazard is similar to the first in that players will find the game something of a mixed bag as far as the modes go. The mini-game styled 21 is a fun distraction that feels quite rewarding at times when you outsmart Lucas but can grow to be repetitive while the Daughters mode delivers some interesting narrative but fails to give much of a lasting impression. The bonus mode of Jack’s 55th Birthday gives players the most bang for their buck in this entry but considering this second volume is priced higher than the first, it’s a bit disappointing that only one of these modes is a real blast while another is something you’ll likely only play twice and never touch again.

Resident Evil 7: biohazard Banned Footage Vol. 1

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platforms: Xbox One (Reviewed), PlayStation 4, PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview

We’ve seen that Resident Evil 7: biohazard had everything that fans could want in a new style of horror game. Now after the full game has been available for some time Capcom has begun releasing DLC in the form of a few packs called Banned Footage. Now is the Banned Footage Volume 1 a worthwhile pack of DLC to add onto the experience or is it something to pass over?

Gameplay

In interesting fashion Banned Footage’s first batch of content is a mismatch of modes that may entice you to play some more than others. There is an escape the room game with deadly consequences, a survival mode, and one that masochists will truly get a kick out of if they found the game’s Madhouse difficulty as something that wasn’t quite challenging enough.

The first two modes come in the form of videotapes, the little add-ons that players could, more or less, avoid or choose to play through during the main story mode. As mentioned before, the first of these is titled Bedroom and follows the story of poor Clancy, the camera man that we’ve taken control of more than a few times already, as he is strapped to a bed and forced to eat some of Marguerite Baker’s good ol’ home cooking.

Not one to stay around and eat some rancid human stew Clancy takes the first chance he can get to try and escape from Marguerite’s clutches once she leaves the room. The problem is, there are a number of difficult puzzles standing between him and possible freedom and more than a few of these result in some rather loud noises being made. Many of the puzzles themselves aren’t devastatingly hard and once you get through them a few times it is easy to maneuver through them at a fairly brisk pace. The real challenge comes from the nail biting noises that I’ve already mentioned.

Whenever a loud noise is made Marguerite will head back to the room and while you may initially think that it’s all fine and dandy to sit down in the bed, if she sees anything out of place she’ll take it out on Clancy and you’ll end up with a game over. The game is a bit forgiving in this aspect since players are usually given a timer to know how much time they have to quickly throw everything back to where it was and place themselves back into the bed but the fact that players will need to memorize every little detail makes this mode not only a fun challenge for puzzle fans but also one that delivers a lot of tension.

The only problem with it is that outside of going back for collectibles, once you’ve managed to escape you’ll rarely want to drop back down into this mode. Herein lies the other playable VHS tape, Nightmare. This mode once again features Clancy trapped in a location, only this time it happens to be the basement of the Baker family home. Clancy must survive until dawn against multiple waves of Molded and even Jack himself while utilizing scrap that is generated from various spawners in an effort to scrounge together enough weapons, ammo, and healing items.

Scrap can be used to create various weapons as well as purchase upgrades to weapons and even Clancy’s health though you may want to be careful about spending it too quickly as the price increases the more you purchase ammo. As you fight against enemies the waves will grow more difficult with Jack coming at you with various dangerous weapons and players will need to be fast on their feet to keep some distance while also utilizing their environment. I say this because there are various turrets and mines that players can purchase using scrap in an effort to stave off their attackers.

The chances of making it through your first few tries are slim but the more you play Nightmare the better rewards you’ll be given. Players can unlock additional weapons that can be purchased at the scrap workbenches, unlock new traps to unleash on the Molded, and even obtain a few starting bonuses that will give you something of a starting edge. Once you manage to make it through the standard Nightmare there is a harder but fairly doable mode called Night Terror that cranks the difficulty up a notch but leaves things fairly standard.

Now for the bonus mode, this one happens to be called Ethan Must Die and as one would expect from the name, it places players back in the shoes of Ethan Winters in a mode that is truly masochistic. Armed with only a knife beneath a blood red moon, Ethan must obtain a key from inside the Baker’s home in an effort to unlock the greenhouse while obtaining random items along the way in crates and facing off against tons of Molded that can deal enough damage that you will more than likely die in a single hit.

As one would expect in this mode, you will die, a lot. In fact this mode features a bit of a roguelike element where the player will drop one random item that can be picked back up if they make it to where they ended up dying. Unfortunately thanks to the random nature of this mode you may end up with something completely useless. This mode makes for some of the hardest moments in the game even once you manage to figure out exactly where the enemies are every time as their positioning does not change. Instead you’ll need some good luck on your side to survive and while this may be a great mode for diehard fans eager for a challenge, it is easy to pass this mode off as more annoying than enjoyable.

Overall

The first volume of Banned Footage in Resident Evil 7: biohazard is as mixed of a bag as you’d expect from the gameplay options available here. Figuring out the escape room is a blast of true puzzle solving fun with a tense atmosphere that dwindles after the first successful completion while fighting against waves of enemies feels as enjoyable as ever with more rewards the further along you get only for the extremely hard Ethan Must Die mode to feel like more of a kick to the gut with its random nature leaving the player’s fate up to luck more than skill at times. As such, this DLC does offer quite a bit to do but not every mode available here is a winner so be prepared for that if you happen to dive into the Banned Footage’s first volume.

LONDON – March 15th, 2017 – New and experienced sailors alike are able to take to the high seas with Sailaway– the ultimate sailing simulator that brings the world’s oceans to the comfort of your home. Published by new independent games publisher, The Irregular Corporation and developed by OrbCreation, the ultimate sailing simulator is coming this spring on PC and Mac for  £29.99 / $39.99 / €36.99.

OrbCreation has recreated the oceans of the planet with unparalleled accuracy with a detailed world map: In Sailaway, making a trip across the Pacific takes months, just as it would on a real boat. With a persistent online world, adjust your settings and your boat will continue to sail even if you aren’t online.  Receive updates via email as your boat continues its progress, but don’t forget to check in often – with real-time weather data pulled from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conditions can change in just a few hours.

Choose from three types of ultra-detailed boats, a 38′ Cruiser, a Mini-Transat or a 45′ Classic Yacht – all accurately modelled with comprehensive controls and set a course for adventure. Featuring accurately modelled waves and water colour based on your location (waves and wave behaviour differs from ocean to ocean!), and accurately modelled day and night sky, Sailaway is the most advanced sailing simulator on the market.

With a range of difficulty settings, Sailaway allows for adjustments for even the most novice players to blossom into fully fledged sailors, while providing advanced features to challenge seasoned lifelong captains.

The developers at Orbcreation also understand the world’s oceans can be a lonely place, so they have designed an in-game real-time global, local and group chat which will allow you to communicate freely with other sailors to organize your own voyages or pass on sailing tips. These features also allow you to invite others onto your boat to help tackle the voyage ahead – and if you fancy some friendly competition, Sailaway includes options to create your own races with start/finish lines. Reign as master of the wind with online leaderboards and challenge one another for the top spot.

“Sailaway started as an experiment to see if it would be feasible to create a sailboat that responds to sail trim changes” said Richard Knol, the one-man development force behind Sailaway, “but it soon transformed into a full time passion project, in which every aspect of sailing was being implemented in the most comprehensive way possible.”

With an established fanbase, Sailaway plans to utilize Steam Early Access to continue to shape the game’s difficulty curves and take input on boats, tutorials, challenges, events and community features. More content is planned for the game and players are encouraged to give feedback.

Stuart Morton, producer at The Irregular Corporation said, “It was clear from the moment we saw Sailaway that it would have massive appeal in the simulation market. It is a lovingly crafted experience and there are no details spared.”
