Aven Colony is the first game from Texas-based developers Mothership Entertainment, an outfit of four veteran game developers gone indie. Built on Unreal Engine 4, the game sends players to the distant planet of Aven Prime as the governor of the first human colony outside our solar system. Players will need to guide the development of their colony to ensure a happy, healthy, and productive colony in the face of mysterious alien life forms and hostile environmental conditions. We were able to get some hands-on time with a preview build of the game ahead of its full launch in the coming weeks to get a taste of what is to come.

The campaign mode follows the exploits of a famed governor from Earth that has been brought to the new planet to set up the first permanent colonies outside the Solar System. The player provides a steady, though silent, hand at the wheel in the settlements so expedition teams can explore the new alien planet. Based on the preview build, the story is told through a series of transmissions between members of the expeditions and the administrators on the fleet. While I suspect there won’t be enough of a plot to write a novel, the story so far has been entertaining with some funny banter between characters.

Aven Colony is a city building sim with a few twists. Anyone who has played a recent Tropico or Anno titles will be well equipped for what Aven Colony has to offer. Players start off with a small lander module, a little bit of storage space, a construction drone, and a few solar panels to get the colony started. Nanites is the standard construction currency and must be acquired by processing metal or trading with orbiting ships. All buildings need adequate power to run. Colonists are a little fussier; once their basic need of food and water is met, players need to care for their general happiness by ensuring short commutes to work, clean air to breathe, safe places to live, and plenty of entertainment to enjoy.

The population only grows with immigrants coming to settle in the colonies. It is a small blessing in disguise as it gives players control on how quickly their population grows. It would be a disaster to be surprised by a random child boom that results in being eaten out of house and home by a swarm of hungry teenagers.

Players have other options when it comes to controlling the population in hard times. Social edicts can be issued to put restraints on things like food consumption or power usage. Of course, these measures do not seem to be suited for the long term as restrictions make the populace cranky. Angry colonists will make their voices heard at the next election, voting no confidence in the player’s rule and booting the player out.

Days work a little differently in Aven Colony as one day is the equivalent to one full year, complete with changing seasons. There are only two seasons worth noting in practice, winter and everything else. Winter comes with some harsh penalties. Solar panels generate half the power they normally do, crops can only grow in greenhouses, and destructive lightning storms rain down from the heavens. Much like settlers of old, players will need to do a little preparation for the cold season, stocking up on food and building battery packs and lightning rods to protect the colony and cover any shortages of power. While the orbital stations can send an emergency pod with supplies, it is not enough to rely on.

The weather is not the only thing that is hostile on this new planet. Local hot spots happily belch toxic fumes if not harnessed by a geothermal generator. The local wildlife aren’t too thrilled about the new colonists either. Players will need to keep robots and hospitals on the ready to deal with plague spores looking to infect both buildings and people. Left to its own devices, the spores can spread like wildfire across the colony with crippling side effects. To deal with infections, players need to harden their infrastructure against spores, such as installing turrets to blast spore pockets away and avoiding intake fans that directly pump in air from the outdoors.

The audio/visual presentation has been decent so far. The sound effects and soundtrack has been enjoyable. The voice acting is very strong. The art style is a very clean futuristic look to it which is contrasted by the neon colours of the alien planet. The only thing I did notice is that the textures are at a low resolution at maximum settings, resulting in some pretty fuzzy looking structures. I am hoping this will get cleaned up when the game

Based on the early build of Aven Colony, it seems like the game is emphasizing its campaign mode to really differentiate itself from other city management sims. Aven Colony does throw a few more balls in the air for players to juggle, but how they are dealt with are no different than any other mechanic in the game for the most part. If Aven Colony is able to deliver an enjoyable campaign along with its sturdy, if not very flashy city management gameplay, then Mothership Entertainment will have a solid title worthy of being in a city sim fan’s library.

KONAMI announces UEFA Champions League partnership with Topps Trading Cards

Sydney, 13th July 2017 – Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. has partnered with Topps Trading Cards, the largest global producer of Trading Card Games, which will see limited edition UEFA Champions League Match Attax Trading Cards for the upcoming 2017-18 tournament given away with copies of PES 2018.

KONAMI is an official partner of UEFA and enjoys exclusive use of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions within the PES series. Topps Trading Cards has secured the rights to produce cards featuring players and teams from the forthcoming 2017/18 competition, offering fans the chance to collect the greatest players from Europe’s top club teams.

Beginning September 14th, a limited number of exclusive cards will be included in physical versions of PES 2018. These cards will be available ahead of the official launch of the new Topps Match Attax range, and will only be available for a short period.

“We are constantly looking for ways to extend awareness of the PES series to new audiences, and are delighted to be working with a UEFA Champions League partner of the calibre of Topps,” commented Jonas Lygaard, Senior Director – Brand & Business Development for Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. “These collectible cards are huge with young football fans and they can be the first to get their hands on them before Topps officially releases their Match Attax range by purchasing PES 2018 at launch.”

PES 2018 will offer the definitive football gaming experience, and we are delighted to link our 2017/18 UEFA Champions League collection with such a strong partner,” commented Rod Pearson, Marketing Director for Topps. “This year’s competition will be even more hard-fought and competitive than ever and the agreement between Topps and KONAMI showcases two very different ways to enjoy the progression of Europe’s greatest club sides.”

PES 2018 features more new additions than any other PES title in the last 10 years, and offers complete control over its on-field action. It boasts players that behave, move and react just like their real-life counterparts, with new additions to the control systems adding more fluidity to the game, while a new user interface makes accessing its many modes a simpler process.

The new game retains the immediacy and total control the series is famed for with matches played at a realistic pace. A new strategic dribbling system will offer greater close control, while, simple movements of the control stick can be used to effect shimmies designed to wrong-foot defenders. All set piece routines have also been totally reworked, notably the way penalty kicks are taken and a one-player kick off routine.

PES 2018 also allows more ways for people to enjoy the match day experience. Full 11-vs-11 online options, and the eternally popular myClub challenge where players build a team from scratch, are joined by co-operative 2-Vs-2 and 3-Vs-3 modes with support for local guests. The much-requested ‘Random Selection’ match returns with all new content, while the Master League mode implements pre-season tournaments, a new transfer system and pre-match interviews and an insight to the changing rooms.

PES 2018 will be released on September 14th for PlayStation®4 and Xbox One™. The game will also be available via Steam in a version that has undergone substantial improvements in terms of aesthetics and content, ensuring the game enjoys parity with the current gen formats.

HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE FAN-FAVORITE ARCADE RACING ACTION RETURNS WITH FULLY REMASTERED CRASHDAY: REDLINE EDITION

HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE FAN-FAVORITE ARCADE RACING ACTION RETURNS WITH FULLY REMASTERED CRASHDAY: REDLINE EDITION

Guns, Rockets and Fast-Paced Vehicular Action Highlight Completely Retooled Windows PC Classic with New Features, Content and Steam Workshop Support

Magdeburg, Germany (July 12, 2017) – Publisher 2tainment and developer Moonbyte Games today announced Crashday: Redline Edition, a newly remastered edition of the classic arcade racer Crashday (Atari, 2006) for Windows PC. With an improved multiplayer mode, a wide variety of action-packed game modes, plus new modding functions and an integrated track editor, fans of blazing chain guns, blasting rockets and action-packed over-the-top racing can celebrate a true indie thrill ride this August!

Originally released in 2006, Crashday garnered a die-hard fan base that remains loyal to this day. Thanks to their invaluable feedback and support, indie developer Moonbyte Games lovingly crafted the remastered Crashday: Redline Edition. With the help of the game’s fan community, Moonbyte Games significantly expanded modding support and multiplayer options in the updated version of the highly explosive arcade racer. Featuring refreshed visuals, Crashday: Redline Edition also enhances original features and adds compelling new ones.

Crashday: Redline Edition delivers gripping single and multiplayer races, really heating things up on the track. Unlike mundane racing games, Crashday: Redline Edition does more than just challenge the player’s driving abilities. Ramming your opponents into a careening slide or “persuading” them off the track at gunpoint are perfectly acceptable ways to win. With a mood-setting progressive metal soundtrack, an arsenal of steel-shredding weapons, all-new power-ups, a sophisticated damage system and impressive replays that highlight the most spectacular action, Crashday: Redline Edition guarantees adrenaline-loaded fun!

Crashday: Redline Edition’s seven modes of play deliver steep variety. While in classic Race Mode, it’s all about being first to dash over the finish line; in Stunt Show Mode, players can demonstrate their skills with ridiculous stunts and breathtaking jumps and crashes. In the thrilling Wrecking Match, anything goes — ramming opponents, rockets, etc. Whoever manages to be the last driver still “standing” on the track can rejoice in a win.

For more carnage, Crashday: Redline Edition players can enjoy the extremely popular modes Hold The Flag, Pass The Bomb and Bomb Run. In Hold The Flag, the “flag bearer” must pass through as many checkpoints as possible and collect points before his or her adversaries run them down. Use skillful driving to ram your bomb-strapped vehicle down your opponent’s throat before the timer runs out in Pass The Bomb. In Bomb Run, the bomb explodes automatically as soon as you fall below a predetermined speed limit. And, of course, Crashday: Redline Edition wouldn’t be complete without a Test Drive Mode, where the player can preview a track and hone their skills in perfect peace, preparing for upcoming races, breathtaking stunts and action-packed street battles on the numerous racetracks.

Crashday: Redline Edition features sophisticated modding support to expand the capabilities of the existing in-game track editor. With full Steam Workshop integration, players are not limited to their own custom created tracks. Sharing and downloading player-made content is easy and includes new or modified vehicles, custom tracks or track editor building blocks. Publisher 2tainment and developer Moonbyte Games anticipate that well over 100 mods will be available within the first few weeks of Crashday: Redline Edition’s release!

Crashday: Redline Edition will be available for digital download from Steam for $11.99 USD. For more information, please visit http://crashday.2tainment.com.

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates Will Rise From The Oceans This Fall

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates Will Rise From The Oceans This Fall

Coin Operated Games to Bring Classic, Neo-Victorian RPG Action to PC via Steam

Auburn, New Hampshire – July 12, 2017 – Coin Operated Games announces today that its upcoming Neo-Victorian RPG Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates, will be coming to Steam players this fall.  Currently in development by a team of industry veterans from such influential companies as Crytek, Codemasters, Gameloft and Creative Assembly, Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates is a top-down isometric RPG that takes place in a Neo-Victorian New York circa 1911. The game’s first trailer can be viewed at https://youtu.be/n3324z7aMGs.

… water is everywhere but none of it to drink…

Featuring a top-down isometric presentation, Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates will rekindle old-school PC RPG fans with feelings of some of the classic story driven RPGs of the 90s. While the combat should feel familiar to veteran players, there’s a new twist in that the game uses a hybrid Real Time/Turn-based System. Players can enter a “Planning Mode” where they choose actions for each character in their party while combat is paused, and when entering into the “Action Mode” all characters will perform simultaneously, giving players complete control over their party while presenting a streamlined combat system that eliminates waiting for each character to act in sequence.

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates is the story of an alternate New York in which the entire city is flooded by rising oceans and the citizens must learn to live in a new reality where there is water everywhere, but none of it possible to drink. The player must make their way in search of a fresh water supply source, picking up companions along the journey. But the trip won’t be easy, as there are many threats both human and inhuman that players will encounter.

“One of the things we strove for when designing Empyre is authenticity during an ‘Age of Technical Wonder’ in the United States, the Gilded Age,” said John Randall, Creative Director of Empyre. “For example, the New York City we all know is the city in this game, and history buffs will recognize many iconic locations that existed in the city during the 1910s, but with a unique, waterlogged twist. People and society exist and act as they did in the early 20th Century. We feel this level of detail will give players a one-of-a-kind experience that they haven’t seen anywhere before.”

Empyre:  Lords of the Sea Gates pays homage to historic accounts by adding authentic items such as patent medicines including poisons or tonics made from dangerous ingredients. Many of the games’ objectives and side quests will tie directly into the experiences that someone in the 19th century would have. The game’s authenticity reflects scenes from New York during the 1900s, while tying the storyline to current day themes such as global warming and the rising of the oceans.

Currently in development by Coin Operated Games, Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates will be available via Steam this fall. More information will be shared in the coming weeks once the waters die down…
