Pop Capsule: VH1’s Celebreality

It is rare when we can define one era of television by name alone. In many ways, applying a gimmick to a standard line-up can be positive. Look at TGIF for ABC. That line-up took place every Friday night on ABC for most of the 90’s, and consisted of some of the most beloved television shows that an entire generation reference as a golden era of growing up. The same can be said about Toonami, which was so big, it got a rebirth that is still popular today, continuing to introduce the masses to anime. The negative aspect of this kind of branding mainly comes at the failures. Cartoon Network comes to mind with CN Real, which never caught on as it kind of took away from what the Network stood for and made viewers feel alienated as they all tuned in for animation and got kids trying to relate to an audience that were just not interested.

Oddly enough, for this gimmickry, there is a middle ground. You can find a balance and run with it, and even if it is not within the genre boundaries of a television network, the right product can strike a chord with the right audience. Enter Celebreality, a block of entertainment created to bring back once big names to television – while still appealing to a mass audience by taking advantage of the huge influx of reality programming that took over western markets in the 2000’s. VH1 branded Celebreality, and no network did it better when it came to coming up with entertaining concepts for the block that lasted just over five years, before coming to a screeching halt before the decade could end.

In this Pop Capsule, we will be exploring your guiltiest pleasure of the decade prior. Before audiences cared about housewives, before anyone kept up with any Kardashian, we got to follow a full cast through what were generally scripted, yet “real” products of television. These shows were ridiculous, shallow, but oddly endearing an entertaining. Join us as we take a look back on an era, and dive into what made this little tagline so special for so many.

I try to remember VH1 before Celebreality. My best recollection of VH1 was that was the station where we got a ton of countdowns and retrospectives of music that came out in previous decades. The Greatest One Hit Wonders, The Most Awesomely Bad Music Videos. I am sure most of you who are of age remember these little gems. VH1 also played a lot of biopics and standard Behind the Music docs, which kind of made the network seem to be the only music network to actually provide audiences with the promised product, as at the time, MTV had already abandoned most of its audience for scripted television and reality shows, so this was the place where you could still indulge.

Without much fanfare, VH1 picked up the third season of The Surreal Life from The WB, and that acquisition would change the future of the network forever. For those who do not remember, The Surreal Life was a television show that put a specific number of B-List celebrities in a house, where they were filmed as they performed in competitions and lived together. They fell in love, fought, and did everything in-between in what was the birth of Celebreality. Remember Full House? Well we got to see what Uncle Joey was like in “real life”. How about Flavor Flav? Well, we also got to see him become an American underdog on the program, finding love with former 80’s starlet, Brigitte Nielsen. The Surreal Life was a stupid, yet fun look into the actual lives of celebrities, displaying life after fame in a raw, yet entertaining way.


One guarantee of The Surreal Life is that if you did not know who someone was before you tuned into episode one of that particular season, you definitely knew who they were afterwards. While I didn’t fully dive into the third season (which again, was the debut season for VH1), I did go head first into the fourth, which featured the likes of Christopher Knight (Peter Brady), Verne Troyer (Mini-Me from Austin Powers), WWE’s Chyna, Da Brat, and several other decently memorable names that would definitely lay the foundation of the product that would eventually anchor the network’s future. While Season 3 made Flavor Flav have a resurgence in a spin-off we will cover in a moment, Season 4 was the prime peak of the show, giving us a dose of realness and humanity for celebrities who were dealing with their time out of the spotlight. There was a cast member that everyone could relate to, even if you may not understand the product that their fame originated with. We got to see subtle love, substance abuse, fights, and the biggest draw for the show, which was simply some of these celebrities dealing with living without the attention and fanfare they had years prior.

One of my main memories of Season 4 was Da Brat going into the house, only to find out that Jane Wiedlen and Christopher Knight were also cast members. Her reaction was one of shock, as she was furious her manager would put her on the same show as a Go-Go and a Brady. For the viewer, this was a look at a piece of the celebrity life we didn’t get to see, which was the initial reaction of a celebrity finding out that they are not as famous as they once were. One thing that many viewers also forget is how dialogue heavy the show was. While there were a lot of oddball jobs and tasks for the cast to do, a good bulk of the show was made up of the cast simply talking back and forth to one another. This was a platform for these cast members to be real with the world, while tackling demons that rose after the spotlight had faded out. In some ways, this television is timeless as despite it living within a forgettable era and probably being just as scripted as any other reality show, there is a lot more edge and realness to The Surreal Life that made it must see television, which was displayed prominently with growing ratings and general interest of each cast within.

Season 5 and 6 were also hits for the network, with season 5 being able to snag Omarosa, who at the time was a huge name in reality TV. Omarosa’s feud with model Janice Dickenson would later become one of the most memorable rivalries in television, further cementing the show’s success. Season 6 was more of the same, bringing out the likes of Sherman Helmsley, C.C. Deville, and even Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth to round out the series. I am sure the franchise could have went on further, but during its peak, The Surreal Life was able to strike while the iron was hot and create multiple spin-offs that were quite beloved during their time. Strange Love followed the relationship and break-up of Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen, which to this day and without researching too far, I still believe was a staged encounter. We also got to see My Fair Brady, which followed Christopher Knight and Adrianne Curry’s relationship for three whole seasons. Sure, they broke up later, but it was a fairly interesting show that definitely had some sort of entertainment value. Oddly enough, it was Flavor Flav’s next televised effort that would further the transformation of this era, and continue the success of Celebreality.


Flavor of Love had Flav live in a house full of women, who were all competing for his affection. Week by week, ladies were eliminated based off of their “love” for Flav, who would hand out hearts to those who were able to show they were there for him and not the spotlight. Well, let’s face it. Not one of these women were interested in Flav in the long-run. Flavor of Love was a show about creating new characters, quick drama, and shock television that was a trashy trainwreck. Oddly enough, it was amazing to see. Tiffany “New York” Pollard and her bitchy attitude stole the show during the first season, with a cast member by the name of Pumkin spitting on the short-fused contestant, only for New York to nearly attack the blonde in what was again another unforgettable reality TV moment. I never would tell anyone I watched this show as it was show brainless that I thought it would be frowned upon. However, this spin-off of sorts took over pop culture and got the world talking about every single event, becoming one of the biggest water cooler hits I can remember of in my lifetime.


Flavor of Love would go for three seasons, and inspire another spin-off for those wanting some rock. Rock of Love with Bret Michaels featured the same concept, but Bret picking a new mate from a large group of women who were interested in the rocker’s affection, with an intention to bring a larger audience to the network. This new formula worked, and the shows ran one after another, with Bret and Flav never finding love in the long run, despite the amount of seasons that went into each. Even though the main shows never had a long-term, successful outcome, they were both fun and addicting in a satisfying way. We could pick favorites, watch meltdowns, and find stars with the entire world, giving us a break from our own lives and letting us view a polished mess each week.


With those spin-offs came more spin-offs. First, we had New York getting her own competition in I Love New York. Again, same concept, different sex. One woman with an over-the-top personality trying to find love, with her overbearing mother also on set to filter out contestants and add to the drama of each episode. I liked I Love New York decently, as it was silly but satisfying. New York was such a terrible person, but somehow the viewer had reason to root for her. The show went on for two seasons, with the second seeing just as much entertainment value as the first, with big ratings to boot. On the Rock of Love side, Daisy of Love gave us a taste from the other side of another popular runner-up, Daisy Del La Hoya, as she attempted to find love in this format. Again, it was entertaining, but the concept was starting to show its age by this point.

Enter more spin-offs. By this point, we were dealing with reality stars who were so memorable that their personalities were strong enough to stand on their own. We first got Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School, which featured host (and later Oscar nominated actress) Monique, as she attempted to teach some of the most popular Flavor of Love contestants charm in an elimination based completion. Rock of Love: Charm School would also come forth, bringing both Sharon Osborne and Ricki Lake on board for two very different seasons with the same general concept. Not enough for you? Well, VH1 did not stop there. I Love Money would bring together contestants from all of these shows as they competed for $250,000 by living together and attempting to score cash by teaming up, forming alliances, and besting competition week after week. It was such a successful brand that seemed to never run out of steam. We will get to the abrupt end in a second, but there is still more to this era to write about.


Outside of this phenomenon came other shows that featured new formulas that worked quite well for the network. Celebrity Fit Club gave us a group of washed-up celebrities trying to lose weight for a fitness competition. Whoever could lose the most weight was the winner. There were no true eliminations for this show, instead – we got to see a darker side of pop culture as the episodes would tackle inner-demons that were behind the cast not being able to lose the pounds they packed on over the years. We also learned a lot about the stars within, which changed a lot of my own personal perception of many people I once admired. Dustin Diamond, who played the lovable dork Screech Powers on Saved by the Bell turned out to be an asshole in real life, as he tormented the cast and bullied fellow cast members such as Kimberly Locke on a regular basis. Jeff Conaway from Grease and Taxi also turned a lot of heads, as he was actually dealing with substance abuse, and was one of many cast members to show a dark side, eventually quitting the show before his season concluded. It is sad how many celebrities bared nasty human sides here, but again – this was oddly entertaining to most as the audience could relate to everyone’s shortcomings, even though the finale may not have been successful for everyone within the cast.


Celebrity Fit Club would shine light on the downfalls of losing the limelight, and in turn spawn a new show about tackling addiction. Celebrity Rehab Featuring Dr. Drew would emerge and give audiences a very dark yet real take on addiction featuring many names that were featured in other projects from the same network. Chyna, Jeff Conaway, Tawny Kitaen, and several other new entrants were cast members of the many seasons of this show that ran, and dammit was it a hard pill to swallow. Audiences were shown their favorite talents deal with withdrawal and denial, where they had to tackle the source of their addiction before each season finalized. It was not pretty television, and intended to “create awareness” for addiction through the celebrities that signed on to participate. Yes, sadly, I can say it was entertaining, but also heartbreaking. I guess the popularity from this show came because so many of us can relate to substance abuse, and seeing someone famous endure tragedy makes for good ratings. That said, there is still a perception that these ratings were being made by publicizing the downfall of a human, and that – in my opinion, makes this the most shallow reality show ever created.


In Celebrity Rehab’s defense, some celebrities such as Jason Wahler (I think he was from Laguna Beach and The Hills?) and Shifty Shellshock managed to find at least some sobriety, though others were not successful, and would die shortly after their season completed (Mike Starr, Chyna, Jeff Conaway, and several others being on this list). Some blame Dr. Drew, as he seems to always be the mouthpiece of addiction for news networks to interview after a celebrity death, but I suppose it is just a sad reality that losing the amount of attention a limelight brings can make demons arise, which tragically ends in death for a good number of humans who are unable to conquer their own addictions.


Going into further spin-offs, New York was featured in New York Goes Hollywood as she looks for work as an actress, as well as New York Goes to Work – which was like The Simple Life, but with Pollard’s larger than life persona attached. These shows were fine, if not a bit noticeably scripted during their original runs. Hogan Knows Best also emerged in the middle of all of these shows, showing Hulk Hogan living the family live with his then wife Linda, daughter Brooke, and son Ryan. Hogan Knows Best was not my cup of tea, even as a wrestling fan, but it did find ratings and success as an audience got to see Hulk deal with day to day life and his many attempts of trying to find a path to fame for his two children.

Now, we can talk about the decline and end of Celebreality, as while there were a few unmentioned shows, the ones mentioned are the only products that actually came off as entertaining. I think that a big part of Celebreality ending as a whole was Celebrity Rehab and Sober House. Sure, it makes for good television seeing the downfall of someone else, as us as humans use it for validation that no matter how bad our lives are, someone always has it worse. Celebrity Rehab however cut a bit too deep, and made it a little less fun to see these out of work talents taped for entertainment value. Dr. Drew can paint it any way he wants to. Every cast featured did this for money, which further enabled them after each taping. While it was good to hear of success from the program for some, there are a lot of dead celebrities who are now remembered for their addictions and downfalls, rather than for the talent that made them famous to start with, and it is all because of this program.


The end stake through the heart of Celebreality (even though Dr. Drew continued for a bit after this project), was without a doubt Megan Wants a Millionaire. This show featured Rock of Love alum Megan Hauserman look for love with that same formula. However, three episodes after air, one of the finalists by the name of Ryan Jenkins kidnapped a young model in real life who he was dating, chopped her up, and put her in a suitcase before killing himself during the manhunt. VH1 quickly cancelled the program as well as I Love Money 3, which featured Jenkins. The network also quietly exited the Celebreality brand over time, which was more than likely due to the publicity that came from such a big incident. It’s crazy how something so big that affected pop culture in such a big way just came and went, but due to the circumstances, it is certainly understandable.

While there really is no current place for this type of television, this little era will forever be remembered as one of the most controversial, trashy, and fun times for the silver screen. These shows were the definition of guilty pleasures, and allowed audiences to get a new perspective of celebrity life, with moments that will be forever cemented in television history. I know reality television is still in full swing, but Celebreality was unlike anything, providing us with truly mindless entertainment and escapism by viewing the best and absolute worst of humanity. Perhaps it also taught us a little about boundaries as well, as I don’t think a lot of current shows are willing to push the envelope so far due to the terrible events that occurred in real life from the very cast that led this movement. Pop Culture changes a lot from day to day, but this little piece of it will surely go down as one of the most recognizable (if not darkest) periods in television network history.

SYDNEY, Australia July 24, 2018 — Ubisoft has revealed that the worlds of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Siege will be colliding in a free and exclusive crossover mission as part of Special Operation 2, the second major update of the second year of post-launch content for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. Players will be able to team up with Valkyrie, Twitch and Caveira in this two-part crossover event available tomorrow, July 25, on all platforms.

Starting July 25 for all players, exclusive Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege–themed content will be introduced to the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands main campaign and Ghost War PvP mode, including two new Rainbow Six Siege–inspired Ghost War PvP classes and a two-part PvE mission, called Operation Archangel,.  The Rainbow Six Siege Operator Caveira has gone missing. With the help of Twitch, the Ghosts will follow a trail of clues, to learn more about why Caveira is in Bolivia, and also about her troubled past. This special challenge is playable solo or with up to four players in co-op and can be found in the province of Caimanes.

Upon completing Operation Archangel before August 14, players will be rewarded with Caveira gloves. When equipped, players will be able to perform Caveira’s iconic CQC move and automatically unlock the position of all enemies in the vicinity. In addition to the rewards for completing the challenge, players can further customise and arm their Ghosts with the Rainbow Six Gear Pack, which includes new customisation items and weapons such as Caveira’s iconic Luison handgun, a fully customisable HK 416 assault rifle, a head-wrapped shemagh inspired by Valkyrie and a skull balaclava inspired by Twitch.

Special Operation 2 will also bring two new Ghost War PvP classes, Toxic and Surgeon, which were inspired by Smoke and Doc of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Toxic uses his drone to deploy a large cloud of toxic smoke, which allows players to both trap the enemy team and create area denials, while Surgeon uses his stim pistol to revive teammates from a distance, creating new opportunities to deploy support strategies at medium range. In addition to two new classes, this update will also contain two new PvP maps, Factory and Checkpoint, a new spectate feature called Observer mode and Ghost mode, a higher difficulty permadeath PvE game mode.

Ghost War players will be able to get seven-day early access to the new classes, maps and Ghost mode with the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands Year 2 Pass. Overview

Back in the prime of the SNES era, Capcom brought their best boy to the next generation, and the results were quite legendary. Mega Man X landed in 1993, and became an instant classic. Since then, we have seen the first title praised and even featured within the SNES Mini from Nintendo, but the rest of the series that came after have quietly stood in the background. Sure, we did get a pretty nice Gamecube compilation, but with so much Mega Man news in the present, it is a prime time to reintroduce a new audience to an old hero. Enter Mega Man X Legacy Collection. This ensemble look to give us yet another taste of the series, while celebrating the existence of the line with a bit of fan service. How did Capcom pull this package with over eight titles out? Let’s find out.

Story

I’m not going to dive too far into the lore of this series, but for those new, Mega Man X basically is the name of a creation of Dr. Light in a time after the events of the first Mega Man titles. After providing the bot with a free will, Light passes and “X” is discovered, with his tech being replicated. These events birth several robots, and a new enemy squad dubbed “Mavericks”, led by Sigma. Along with Zero and several allies, X sets out to rid the villains and keep his world safe. Yeah, that is kind of the basics, but of course, as many long-standing series do, this formula gets a little stale as you go down the line, as it is kind of kin to any kids television show. Evil face erupts, plot is made to defeat evil, evil loses, and repeat. Game after game. Some minor changes come in to shake up the line later, but those fall flat as the farther you go, the less enjoyable these games become. That all said, it is still a serviceable plot and truly, the gameplay is what matters.

Gameplay

The gameplay is exactly like you would expect. I know a lot of collections of classic titles have fell straight on their face with porting older titles to next generation systems, but Mega Man X Legacy Collection‘s proudest feat is that all games are in original form. No slowdown, no noticeable lag input, and smooth sailing through each of the titles within. The general concept remains the same from the original Mega Man titles on the NES. Play a stage, fight a boss, obtain the power to get an advantage later on. As always, the player has the option of picking which stage to play first, so your path and choices can dictate the progression you make. Unlike the originals, there are new tools and abilities that X and Zero have this time around, and while the games are still challenging, they’re far more forgiving than the original titles.

Capcom definitely started the X series strong, but as it entered the newer platforms such as the Playstation during what is the latter half of this collection, quality starts to dip. This is mainly due to the same gameplay mechanics applied to a newer graphical engine. Sure, the visuals look better, but it is almost like the game only improved visually, and the rest never caught up, leaving us with what feels like a retread with a new coat of paint each time. Sure, X and Zero get nice new abilities, armor, and so on as you go through the series, but the gameplay just stays at the same pace, which can make one thirst for a bit of evolution that never quite comes. When X7 attempts to alter the formula, the results are not exactly what one would ask for. Again, the franchise here is solid throughout several console generations as a whole, it just is an interesting look at how some franchises refuse to change, for better or worse. Not even a complaint, rather more a mere observation.

I think the shining light of this collection is how much fan service went into the extras. Players can go to a museum and see a ton of concept art, photos, and development illustrations in the gallery. Also featured in each part of the collection are two Jukeboxes, where you can listen to the amazing soundtracks to each title, while watching demos of gameplay. Players can also see Japanese merchandise for each title, and get character biographies for each character in the game. It is seriously like a digital encyclopedia, and after coming on the heels of Sega’s atrocious Genesis collection for modern platforms, a swift bow of how a collection should be done. I still am finding more such as wallpapers, secrets, and so on as I simply filter through, so if you are looking for a ton of content, this collection should have everything you desire.

Visuals and Audio

Visually, all the games in both collections look great. The bright colors utilized in past eras translate beautifully to HD, and aside from the Playstation titles looking a bit, uglier….there is definitely a lot to be pleased with here. Animations are also sharp and fluid, with no real stutters or hiccups noticed. That may sound like an odd praise, but again, compared to other classic ports, it is an important element to bring up as Mega Man X’s enjoyment comes with precise platforming, and without it being able to perform perfectly – if would be a huge headache. Kudos to the team at Capcom for that, as overall, there is a lot to feast your eyes upon here.

As far as the soundtrack goes, it is of course amazing. The music from the X series may be some of the finest ever released from Capcom period as these were tunes that were able to take advantage of better technology. If you cannot get enough of the beats or simply just want to hear tunes, all songs are unlocked from the start, so you can dive straight into the museum and turn the volume up for a nice treat.

Overall

Mega Man X Legacy Collection is a wonderful collection that is sure to please fans and newcomers alike. With eight mostly solid titles that have all done their part to pave the way for platformers of today, there is a lot to celebrate and Capcom have done well ensuring this is a celebration worthy of their most revered franchise. Sure, the titles may not change a ton in-between other than slight visual improvements, but those who have been aching for some more of the blue bomber on modern platforms will be elated to see what this double package has to offer.

Star Wars themed wheelchair costumes created for seven children with disabilities

SAN DIEGO – July 23, 2018 – Magic Wheelchair, a nonprofit organization that builds epic costumes for kids and young adults with disabilities, made history this weekend unveiling seven Star Wars-themed wheelchair costumes at San Diego Comic-Con.

The recipients of the new Magic Wheelchair costumes have been deemed ‘ultimate Star Wars fans’ and now get to enjoy the ultimate cosplay experience. They were matched with volunteer builders worldwide including Adam Savage, Tom Spina, Fon H Davis, Michael McMaster, Gordon Tarpley, Pixologic, Dangling Carrot, and Monster City Studios, who worked tirelessly for over three months to ensure that the custom-fitted costumes – which include sound, animatronics, LED lighting and other special effects – are EPIC.

Adam Savage, former co-host of MythBusters and editor-in-chief of Tested.com, emceed the reveal on Saturday. As it was the first time the kids and their families saw the costumes, it proved to be a powerful and emotional experience for everyone in attendance. The kids were then able to spend the rest of the weekend enjoying the show in their new amazing cosplay.

Ryan and Lana Weimer, the founders of Magic Wheelchair, have five children, three of whom were born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which requires the use of wheelchairs for the entirety of their lives. Each Halloween, Ryan made the biggest, “baddest” costumes that he could for his sons, Keaton and Bryce. Once news of these costumes spread, Ryan began receiving requests from parents around the world asking if he would transform their kids’ wheelchairs into “magic”. Magic Wheelchair takes costume requests on the organization’s website. Because some of the kiddos have life-threatening illnesses, it is the goal of Magic Wheelchair to fulfill every single request as soon as possible.

Magic Wheelchair provides each volunteer builder with all necessary building materials and resources. They partner with the Stan Winston School of Character Arts to train builders, and bring together incredible and unlikely volunteers, anywhere from local comic book conventions to the special effects industry. The organization relies on donations made by the community surrounding each costume build. To date, Magic Wheelchair has built costumes for over 100 families nationwide and, this year, they anticipate delivering over 100 costumes in 2018.

Pop Capsule: 2Gether

Sometimes, you can just be sitting, performing some mundane activity, when you all of the sudden remember something awesome about your past. A breath of nostalgia takes over your lungs and for a second, you are in a different time entirely, savoring a feeling of bliss before hopping back into the sad reality of the present. About two weeks ago, I had this wave, but it has not stopped for a moment since. I was playing some random game, listening to a generic Spotify playlist when one song hit me like a fist in the mouth. You remember Backstreet Boys? NSYNC? How about LFO, Hanson, or even 98 Degrees? Well, this piece isn’t about any of them. Instead, I think it is time to talk about the greatest boy band of all time. Ladies and Gents, welcome to another Pop Capsule, where we will be shuffling into the new millennium with 2Gether.

I imagine that like two of you readers looked at that paragraph and smiled, and the rest could really care less. That’s fine, but if you don’t know 2Gether, come close as we kind of break down exactly what this little group of guys were all about.

2Gether were a fictional boy band who were made up of a real cast that could sing, act, and actually come off as funny in scripted situations. Think of a mix between The Monkees, Spinal Tap, and every single boy band from the era. The time was the year 2000, and after seeing a huge resurgence, boy bands had taken over music with their generic, yet catchy tunes, featuring random ensembles of five guys with “very different personalities”. This whole trend actually took off a few years prior, but by 1999 and into the next year, there were so many clones of this gimmick that it was almost impossible to keep up with each group.

Also big at the time was TRL, also known as Total Request Live. This show was a music countdown crafted exclusively for teenagers and produced on MTV. It featured an awkwardly hip host counting down the top ten most voted for videos in the country, which again, were mostly voted on by teenagers. Sure, the internet existed, but it was not nearly as accessible. This was a time where we were all connected by phone lines, rather than social media or other outlets we have today. With nearly every song on TRL being a boy band driven anthem or a solo pop singer’s howling about love, the world was finally starting to grind its teeth at the genre. Teens however continued to embrace every second, and that mix of over-saturation and fanfare made it the perfect time for Mark and Brian Gunn to come up with a project that would change the world for…like, six to nine months.

2Gether launched in a full-length feature film of the same name on MTV on February 21, 2000. The flick was semi-hyped, introducing the world to a new boy band which at the time seemed like a hybrid of comedy and music, based on the promos alone. The movie features the story of a disgruntled and overthrown boy band manager by the name of Bob Buss, who sets out to create a famous boy band in one week. His goal is to have his play a gig, opening for his old project dubbed “Whoa”, which is yet another boy band and the latter rival of 2Gether that he was cast out from early on. As the film progresses, Buss hand picks five random guys to fill his band, with each member possessing a stereotype that all groups had to have. First, we have “lovable heartthrob” Jerry O’Keefe, a clueless, yet decent main protagonist for our group. Next up is Chad Linus, taking the role of “the shy one”. Doug, his older brother (who is balding, pushing 40, and a bit heavier) is then chosen as “the older brother” for the group, and Mickey Parke, a “bad boy” wannabe with a love of urban culture joins in as the fourth member. Rounding off the top five is Q.T., a kid found in a karaoke bar that just happens to be dying of some random disease, which of course makes for even better marketing for that teen audience that Buss is after.

The movie moves fast and spins through the one week timeline in a hurry, where we get to see a group form, become friends, break up, get back together, perform a gig, and eventually – get famous. Everything within is just an over-the-top roller coaster of events, portraying characters who you can genuinely get behind, yet still stand back and just smirk at all of the well scripted chaos. This is not like a parody flick that brings up 1000 non-funny jokes that simply reference pop culture, but closer kin to the likes of The Brady Bunch Movie, as it is able to perfectly capture the essence of the product that it is producing satire for, without coming off as pompous or mean to that very product. You can hate boy bands and get “it”. You can love pop music and still get “it”, and laugh along the entire time. This film is a forgotten masterpiece that lives within the walls of its own era, and one that deserves more credit than what it receives today.

Oddly, a lot of the charm here comes with all of the subtle details that seem to never stop. For instance, on top of being shy, Chad is a huge Star Wars fan who is obsessed with Jet Skis. He also randomly makes random light saber and blaster noises during performances. Sure, all these little quirks are subtle, but go a long way to fully flesh out just one character. Each character has the same minor yet memorable traits that just make the film seem more rounded and satisfying as a whole. Watching 2Gether nearly two decades ago, I don’t think I picked up on this lightly inserted depth, but today, it was something I definitely appreciated. After the movie debuted, the band actually premiered a video on TRL, and even performed in tours around the country for promotion of their first (and second) CD. Fans of boy bands were randomly becoming huge fans, and if you were alive during this era, you may remember that despite the fact that this was satire, there still was a lot of realness to the product. There were issues of teen magazines with all five members’ faces on the cover, posters, and random marketing that would be found right beside merchandise for Backstreet Boys and Britney. 2Gether even made it to Billboard and cracked into Top 40 radio. Somehow, this little movie was able to go full circle and become what it parodied, as it was such a strong satire that it managed to get a decent fanbase. Just thinking about how ironic and twisted it was to see little girls obsessed with Q.T. and Jerry O’Keefe, singing their songs (which by the way are embellishing the hell out of the writing for your typical group), and hanging pin-ups on their walls makes the whole “experience” even more hysterical.

There was nothing like 2Gether, as it was a bit ahead of its time as a concept. Eventually, and by that I mean like months later, the group would get their own television show, which featured a lot more celebrity cameos, while still keeping these characters endearing and delightful. Before anyone had time to get tired of this boy band however, it was over. Tragically, Michael Cuccione (who played Q.T.) mirrored his on-screen character in some ways as he had spent his life plagued with illness. After a great year in the spotlight, Michael passed away from respiratory failure at the young age of 16 in the early part of 2001. There is some irony in that too, as if you watch the movie or the show, mortality is a topic that Q.T. brings up a lot to get the sympathy of young girls. It is still rather sad as when Q.T. passed, there was no 2Gether. I personally have seen some interviews with members that just stated they could not go on as a foursome, that MTV just pulled the plug, and so on, but honestly, I think the short life span of this band gives it a nicely tied bow that lives at the top of its own bullshit flavored cake that so many scarfed down without hesitation.

2Gether is something that comes around once in an era, and if you want a time capsule about the best and worst of pop culture through the eyes of a teen in the year 2000, then do some serious Calculus.

Do some Youtube searches, some hunting, and watch this fun little flick and study up on what it left behind. Sure, it lived fast, but 2Gether left behind a legacy that simply deserves to be remembered without having to get a memory jog from a second-rate playlist, which ironically is where it belongs in history. We may see the band reform one day, and we may not, but for now – this little MTV project still lurks in its space in pop culture, and stands as one of the best musical satires of a generation.
