Overview

Starting its life as a singleplayer campaign for GWENT, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales has been spun out to be a full-blown adventure RPG using GWENT for combat. Players will assemble their army to repel the Nilfgaardian invasion as they travel through Lyria and Rivia. Using the newly revamped rules introduced with GWENT’s Homecoming update, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales will challenge players with standard battles, puzzles, and special scenarios.

Story

Thronebreaker follows the adventures of Meve, Queen of Lyria and Rivia. With the Nilfgaardian army marching through her realm, Meve must bolster her army to repel the invaders and avenge her slaughtered subjects.

The story is an adult tale, with plenty of violence and difficult decisions. Meve’s tale is not a Disney princess story. Many times, players are faced with tests of leadership where there are no happy endings or right answers. Even so, players are given plenty of options to rule Lyria and Rivia as a fair and righteous monarch, an evil tyrant, or somewhere in between. The writing is generally solid. The story is accessible to gamers who have yet to play The Witcher RPGs since the emphasis is on the larger military and political forces at play, which fits perfectly with GWENT’s premise of emulating battles between armies.

Gameplay

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is split between the adventure gameplay in the overworld and GWENT trading card game during combat. The adventure section is a simple point and click-type affair where players travel around the map interacting with locals, looting materials, finding quests, and getting into fights. I found the adventure portion to be rather dull as the world feels a bit empty. While there are a lot of battles and puzzles to get involved with, there are also large dead spaces where players are mostly hoping for an ambush and collecting loot.

Combat is where Thronebreaker really shines as players are essentially playing GWENT against the AI. GWENT is a solid card game. It is a breath of fresh air in a space that is often dominated by Magic the Gathering type games and its variants. Players take turn playing cards in their hand to either the ranged or melee rows. The winner of the round is the player with the most combined power of all their cards in play. At the end of the round, cards are cleared from the play space, three more cards are added to the hand, and a new round begins. GWENT’s complexity comes from the various card and player abilities, plus strategic decisions based on the game’s best out of three rule set. Games are won and lost by beating opponents with the least amount of cards played, and sometimes throwing a round is the best way to win.

In addition to the usual three round matches, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales offers a variety of scenarios and puzzles to complete. Scenarios are usually one round matches against an AI who already has some cards in play to reflect the circumstances of the story. Puzzles are even shorter challenges that gives players a specific set of cards that must be played in a certain order to complete the puzzle’s objectives. While the game’s tutorial is rather short, these scenarios and puzzles are an excellent way of easing newbies into the finer points of the game.

The difficulty level is decent. The game offers three levels of difficulty, and the AI puts up a decent fight. The game’s learning curve is short as GWENT is one of those easy to learn, difficult to master type games. The difficulty ramps up at a reasonable rate. The difficulty of the puzzles are hit and miss, as one puzzle solution may be incredibly obvious to a new players while the puzzle three steps away requires in-depth knowledge of the game mechanics to solve.

The controls are decent. Players can move around the map by either clicking where they want to go or holding down the mouse button to send Meve in a certain direction. While the map looks like it is composed of open areas, players are generally limited to roads and pre-set zones. The pathing for the single click seems to have a short range, requiring players to step in at times and manually guide Meve in the right direction. Considering the game is coming out on consoles, I would have preferred to see some sort of option to guide Meve using the keyboard.

In combat, the controls are decent, but could use some extra options. Players need to click on whatever object they want to interact with and then click where they want to target. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when a card has been selected and is ready to be played as the card only sticks out a little from the hand. I would have preferred to see a more obvious aura to make things clearer. I am disappointed that drag and drop controls are not available, as it’s a common control system for trading card games and feels quite natural with the mouse.

Visuals

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales offers an excellent visual experience. The art style is a complete departure from The Witcher RPG titles, which emphasize realistic graphics. Instead, Thronebreaker opts for a more animated style inspired by the GWENT cards themselves. The style is eye catching, though Meve’s bright gold colouring clashes with the more muted tones at times.

Audio

The audio experience in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is excellent. The sound effects work well. The music is subtle and does not distract players in combat. The voice acting is solid throughout, an impressive feat considering the sheer volume of voice acted lines in the game.

Overall

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales has a great story to tell with solid voice acting. While the adventure portion of the game may be a little dull, the GWENT gameplay is excellent. Along with traditional matches, Thronebreaker offers some intriguing scenarios and puzzles to keep things fresh. Whether you consider Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales to be the singleplayer GWENT campaign or its own game outright, the title is a solid way to get into GWENT.

Overview

There was once a time that seeing an anime game released on consoles in the West would only happen if it happened to involved Saiyans or ninja in some form but now that anime has spread far wider than before, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see that a game based on the new biggest shonen manga has headed West. With My Hero Academia being the most popular new franchise from Japan does My Hero One’s Justice warrant a purchase?

Story

My Hero One’s Justice finds itself in a bit of an odd place as the story only presents a small introduction to the world of the series, where human beings have begun to be born with special super powers that have been called Quirks, and to the main character Izuku Midoriya who happens to have been born Quirkless only to be given the gift of One for All by the number one hero in Japan, All Might.

After this the story leaps past a large number of character introductions and interactions as well as many battles to pit players into the Hero Killer arc where Stain serves as the primary antagonist before continuing on for a bit. This makes for a rather poor jumping in point for those who have yet to get into the series as not only do you miss out on the character developments that have happened by this point in the series but also a large number of battles. Even for longtime fans this will disappoint many thanks to the events that were skipped in an effort to try and get into this section of the story to try and include a number of the League of Villains characters into the roster, even if some of their inclusions left other popular hero characters by the wayside.

That being said, the story mode itself is handled decently even if it is told in a vignette style that leaves out plenty of details even once it gets into the main focus and there are even a number of special “What If” scenarios included in the game to help give players a bit of a unique experience that features content not found in the story as they help expand characters that tend to be given less time on the pages compared to the main characters. There is even a bit of the story that is told through the side of the villains though don’t expect anything too special here as it still is mostly a retelling of things we’ve seen before. It is worth noting that Bandai Namco has done a very poor job regarding subtitling this game outside of the story mode as they have opted to not only skip out on subtitling what characters say during fights but any special introduction or winning dialogue has also been left unsubtitled.

Gameplay

One of the first things you’ll notice as you begin to play My Hero One’s Justice is that the game is an arena brawler that allows players to select one character as their primary fighter and two sidekicks that can be called upon on cooldown timers to provide assists in combat. The fighting system appears to be incredibly basic at first as there are only a handful of attack buttons even available in the game with a standard attack as well as two Quirk based special attacks combined with the ability to dash and guard.

That being said, while this may seem like a very basic combat system there is a bit more depth here and learning how each character handles will definitely help your experience here. This is thanks to how unique most characters are thanks to many of their movesets and combos being based around their Quirks and with nineteen characters available at start, My Hero One’s Justice may not contain everyone’s potential hopeful (Mina Ashido) but it does sport a solid roster and it is rather nice to see how much attention to detail the developers paid to keeping various details and elements intact regarding how a character’s Quirks work and how they came up with various unique abilities for characters that haven’t really seen too much combat time like Toga and Asui.

Players also build a “Plus Ultra” gauge while fighting through each round of combat and a few special moves can be unleashed depending on the level of charge and once again these moves tend to be a spectacular way to finish an opponent or turn the tide of battle but your opponent also has this ability so you’ll need to keep an eye out for these specials and their activation. That can be a bit of a difficult thing to do however as the camera in this game does seem to have a bit of trouble keeping track of the action at times as it does not directly follow your character and with stage destruction being in the game players will find it difficult to keep a clear eye of sight to see what is coming their way.

Outside of the core story mode players will find that My Hero One’s Justice sports local match where players can choose to fight against AI opponents or a friend on the couch, Online match where you fight against players online where you’ll truly find your abilities put to the test making the other two modes available great for practicing your with your favorite fighters, Arcade where players battle against fighters in a ladder style progression, and finally a Mission mode that will have specific requirements for each battle and ranks depending on how well you do. Unfortunately, most of these modes are incredibly bland outside of the last one as Mission Mode tends to be where most players will likely find themselves when playing offline as it offers the greatest challenges as players must manage their health between battles and select various boosts for their team while progressing further into each stage of a mission.

While playing these modes players can also unlock and dress up their fights with little cosmetic items and various costumes that give them a different look while fighting. These really don’t add too much to the experience but it is rather interesting to see how unique some characters can turn out and thankfully at least some costume pieces from missing characters are included in this regard.

Visuals & Audio

A lot of attention to detail has been paid by the developers to make sure that the fighting in this game looks as good as possible. The characters are all lovingly recreated from their anime appearances with plenty of fun little customization available thanks to the aforementioned costume pieces and fans of the franchise will be happy to see that the Plus Ultra special moves tend to feature unique stage or character altering effects when used.

It is worth noting that Bandai Namco has released this game with only the original Japanese voice track and while it does retain all of the original voice actors from the anime series, their poor handling of subtitles does detract from the experience here. The soundtrack is similarly disappointing as it features a standard array of generic music with no real standout background music nor any of the songs from the anime making it into the game in any form.

Overall

My Hero One’s Justice can feel like a bit of a cash-in on a series’ popularity due to how it skimps on the way almost every story element outside of providing some special “What If” scenes is handled but it does pull itself out of that regard by making sure that the details of the fighters and their Quirks were kept as true to the series as possible while making the game accessible but deep enough for fans to enjoy, especially in regards to its faithful anime style visuals. The poorly implemented subtitles don’t help much in this regard either but in the end we have a brawler that is stylish enough and enjoyable enough that fans of My Hero Academia will find plenty to enjoy here, though newcomers may want to get more familiar with the franchise before trying this one out.

Santa Monica, CA – November 2, 2018 – Destiny 2 has attracted legions of dedicated fans and has been enjoyed by millions of gamers around the world since launching in 2017. Now, that fanbase is set to grow as new Guardians will be able to enter the world of Destiny 2 for free in November. To celebrate an entire year on PC, Bungie and Activision, in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, announce that from November 2nd to November 18th everyone on Blizzard’s Battle.net gaming platform who has not already purchased Destiny 2—or any new members joining Battle.netwill have the opportunity to claim the game as a free gift.

Destiny 2 will be available on the Battle.net app to claim for free for a little more than two weeks in November, and players will have the opportunity to download the game once they’ve claimed it*. New Battle.net accounts created after 11:00 a.m. PDT on November 2, 2018, will be required to enable Blizzard SMS Protect before claiming their game license. Destiny 2 is redeemable from https://account.blizzard.com/gifts/.

Existing players of Destiny 2 PC will receive an exclusive emblem not available anywhere else, which becomes available in December, to commemorate the first anniversary of being on Battle.net. Additionally, new Guardians will have the opportunity to try out Destiny 2: Forsaken’s new mode “Gambit,” from November 9th through 11th  2018, during the Gambit Free Weekend. New Mutant Year Zero:Road to Eden Trailer Highlights Game’s Turn Based Combat

The Bearded Ladies and Funcom released a brand new dev diary for their upcoming tactical RPG Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. The video focuses on how combat works in the game and how it was adapted from the pen and paper RPG.

Combat in Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden occurs in two phases. First is the real time phase that replicates exploration and storytelling, while the turn-based combat is meant to emulate dice rolling combat. When players encounter enemies in real time, they will be able to sneak around to set up the perfect ambush by putting characters in cover and knocking out important targets right off the bat. Players will need every advantage they can get in the challenging turn-based combat inspired by titles like XCOM.
