Winter Fury: Longest Road Rains Virtual Reality Bullets onto Steam Early Access May 30

Winter Fury: Longest Road Rains Virtual Reality Bullets onto Steam Early Access May 30

DALLAS — May 16, 2019 — Winter Fury: Longest Road, the VR tank action and first-person shooter from former Activision and THQ veteran developers at Spidermonk Entertainment and publisher 10th Reality, unloads magazines of ammo at Nazis on Steam Early Access on Vive and Oculus Rift May 30.

A Blitzkrieg, a horrifying parade of destructive machinery, approaches the Allied front. The Allies’ sole chance at surviving the devastating onslaught is a soldier with a classified, experimental M-4 Sherman tank. Turn the tide of war with a combination of steel resolve and good ol’ American ingenuity.

The M-4 can take a pounding, but packs a wallop. Bust bunkers with cannon shells or take out foot soldiers with a .50 caliber machine gun to take back the battlefield. Wield motion controllers either seated or standing and pilot the tank from a third-person perspective, or go on foot for first-person gun battles.

Hop out of the tank and fight for freedom with rifles, machine guns and handguns. Scope in with the sniper rifle and the UI shifts so the whole headset shows the sights, making for an intuitive aiming experience unlike any other. Mountable heavy machine guns, grenades and more unlockable weapons prove invaluable when fighting paratroopers to well-armed bosses.

Battle for survival against intimidating bosses like Tiger tanks, Steam Trains, and Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter aircraft. From close-quarter combat in concrete bunkers to sinking a destroyer with cannon fire, each mission offers awe-inspiring set pieces.

Winter Fury combines unparalleled VR tank-fighting action with advanced foot soldier warfare,” said Scott March, founder of Spidermonk Entertainment. “We wanted to bring an authentic World War 2 action game and virtual reality is the perfect platform.”

Winter Fury: Longest Road will be available in English on Steam Early Access for $19.99 May 30 and will be compatible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Necrobarista Percolates onto PC this August

Necrobarista Percolates onto PC this August

Coming to Consoles in 2020

MELBOURNE, VIC – 17 May, 2018 – Necrobarista, the gorgeous cinematic cel-shaded visual novel from Route 59 Games, brews a Windows PC release on 8 Aug, 2019. Console players can stop in for a mug when it pours onto Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 next year.

Stop in for a cup of coffee at The Terminal, a magical café in Melbourne, Australia frequented by living and dead customers. Staffed by a necromancer, this back-alley java house allows the deceased to return to the world of the living for one final day before shuffling off this mortal coil.

Necrobarista takes visual novels in a bold new direction with 3D visuals that provide a distinct cinematic aesthetic and supply the narrative’s branching scenarios with depth and nuance. This also gives players the opportunity to explore the coffee shop and investigate its environments as they mingle with patrons and help them resolve unfinished business.

As supernatural story sequences unfold from several characters’ perspectives, the dynamic camera moves and pans between a variety of angles and vantage points, creating a cinematic presentation previously unseen in the genre. Inspired by the arts of film and anime, Route 59 Games brings the world to life by empowering players to move and interact in free-roaming first-person scenes akin to point-and-click adventure titles.

Necrobarista is the distillation of our deep passion for anime, video games, and storytelling,” said Kevin Chen, lead designer, Route 59 Games. “We set out to pay homage to our influences while also creating something completely new and inventive. While it’s taken a while to perfect the recipe, we look forward to sharing it when Necrobarista launches on PC this August.”

Necrobarista will release via Steam for $14.99 and supports English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese language options. The game also features an original soundtrack from Kevin Penkin, the award-winning composer responsible for the memorable scores found in Made in Abyss, Florence, Under the Dog, Norn9, and more.

Tribal orcs, high tech agents and steampunk scientists clash in the new tabletop RPG, Æther Void Announcing Æther Void, a psychological retro tabletop RPG in a cross genre universe.

Groningen, the Netherlands, May 15th 2019

As a corrupt, technologically advanced society tries to abduct samples from a neighbouring Steampunk and Fantasy World, they are thwarted by undercover agents in their midst. In the ensuing struggle they crashland on Far Haven where Orcs witness their prophesied ancients falling from the skies.

Æther Void is a cross-genre tabletop Roleplaying game, with a wink to retro RPGs like the much renowned Dungeons and Dragons. It features the custom designed Æquilibrium™ Game system that is based on science, as much as possible, featuring known effects from both the physical and the psychological sciences.

Each world is based on several existing Earth cultures. Sleeping Dragon has a, mostly Chinese, cultural background, where Victoria features the culture and zeitgeist of Industrial Revolution Renaissance Europe. Far Haven features Viking culture, ancient Slavic cultures, some obscure Chinese myths, tribal culture, and Shinto-buddhist influences.

Æther Void currently has a closed Beta Program up and running to test the very first early prototype of the game, for which interested RPG players can sign up on the website aethervoid.com. Æther Void is scheduled to go live on Kickstarter late summer or early fall 2019, after which a widespread open Beta test will follow, leading up to the actual release of the game (hopefully in time for Christmas).

METRO EXODUS EXPANSION PASS CONTENT REVEALED

METRO EXODUS EXPANSION PASS CONTENT REVEALED

Moscow – May 16, 2019 – Deep Silver and 4A Games today revealed the details of the downloadable content that will make up the Metro Exodus Expansion Pass.

There will be two major pieces of story-driven DLC for the game, following brand new stories from the world of Metro. Instead of Artyom, players will see through the eyes of a brand-new character and of one of the Spartan Rangers, the Aurora’s only American, Sam. Both of these will be available as part of the expansion pass and will also be available for purchase separately.

A quick word of warning: if you have not yet completed the Metro Exodus campaign, the following contains spoilers.

Coming in Summer 2019, the first story players will follow, The Two Colonels, is that of Colonel Khlebnikov, just below the surface, under the dead city of Novosibirsk, as he makes his way home to his son, Kirill, for New Year’s Eve.

But all is not well with the people here: the slime is further consuming the tunnels, mutant attacks appear to be on the rise and the precious ‘green stuff’ that protects the people from radiation poisoning is running low. In order to secure the survival of the people, those in charge may need to take drastic measures …

Following the journey and experiences of Khlebnikov during the last days of life in Novosibirsk, which Colonel Miller retraces a year later, players can expect the classic story-driven gameplay of the Metro series in this new linear chapter, complete with a brand new weapon, the deadly flame-thrower; claustrophobic environments; and the all-too-familiar hair-raising tension.

The second piece of DLC, Sam’s Story, coming to players in early 2020, is the brand new sandbox survival level based on Vladivostok. Sam, a U.S. marine at the Moscow embassy before the bombs were dropped, has long dreamed of returning to his homeland, and maybe finding his family alive. The prospect seemed impossible in the darkened tunnels of the Metro, but when the Spartans discovered that Moscow was not the only city left alive after the war, holding out hope didn’t feel so foolish anymore.

Sam makes his way away from the Aurora in search of a way back to the U.S., arriving at the remains of Vladivostok’s tsunami ravaged harbours, ruined industrial buildings, and crumbling residential districts. To complete his journey, Sam will discover that he needs every tactic he has learned so far to survive, as his surroundings prove to be far trickier than expected.

Players will forge Sam’s path through the sandbox survival landscape of Vladivostok, as they take a brand new journey across the wasteland of post-apocalyptic Russia.

The Expansion Pass content will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Pre-order now from:

Fade to Silence Review

Fade to Silence

Developer: Black Forest Games
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 30 April 2019
Price: $39.99 USD/$59.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

An endless winter has fallen on Earth. Eldritch horrors now prowl the wilderness. You are Ash, a man battling with his own internal Eldritch horror while trying to create a safe haven for his daughter. To do so, Ash will need to venture out into the wilderness to scavenge supplies, rescue survivors, and battle back against the horrors.

Story

Fade to Silence is a rogue-lite survival game, so storytelling is minimalist. Players will learn about the world from exploring, chatting with survivors, listening to the Eldritch horror, and dreaming during rest breaks. The writing is generally ham fisted, awkward, and at times cringe inducing. The interactions with survivors are too occasional to develop any serious attachment to them. The Eldritch horror that pesters Ash is maddening for all the wrong reasons, as it is repetitive and annoying instead of creepy. At best, the story is context for the game, at worst, it’s a nuisance.

Gameplay

Fade to Silence mixes elements of Dark Souls-type action, survival, and rogue-lite gameplay. Ash’s actions are restricted by his stamina bar, so players need to choose their actions wisely in combat. Resources do not respawn, so healing items are limited. Dodging, parrying, and blocking is a must for long term success. The combat system is solid. Attacks are well telegraphed, leaving much to player skill. There are a few hitches where Ash may get stuck on something in the environment, but it is not a common occurrence.

The game offers two difficulties. Explorer mode has unlimited lives, more resources, better followers, and is generally more forgiving. The main mode is not. Resources and respawns are limited, so players will need to plan ahead of time what they will craft to get themselves out of the gate and moving forward. Surviving outside of the settlement is tough. Staying warm is a constant challenge, especially when blizzards drive down the temperatures and drop visibility down to zero. Fade to Silence is not the type of game players will master on the first playthrough. It’s a game of trial and error to find out the most efficient way through the tech tree and the map.

Being a rogue-lite, permanent death does not wipe all progress. Players are able to purchase boons for their next playthrough with items collected from major story events and clearing strongholds. The boons range from bonus starting resources to saved buildings and equipment. Additionally, Ash becomes stronger and more resilient each playthrough by collecting certain items. They are a huge time saver and create some feeling of progression between attempts.

WhiteSilence

Getting into Fade to Silence can be difficult. The tutorial is barebones, with players only taught the basics of combat and gathering before being sent into the world. There are slightly more detailed instructions in the survival guide, but better tooltips would have been appreciated.

The pace of the game is slow. Ash has a slow, plodding footspeed and limited stamina for sprinting. Unlocking the dogsled and wolves will speed up the pace by a bit, but I find the dogsled controls to be clumsy. The hassle of having to move the dog sled into place, hopping on, travelling, and hopping off barely outweighs walking on your own two feet. Additionally, players will need to stick to the path, or they will be in for a bumpy ride and risk flipping the sled. Navigating is particularly brutal because there is no GPS type arrow, so players will need to squint through the snow to find the path and constantly pull up the map to figure out where to go.  Early playthroughs are brutal until the sled is unlocked and the ability to retain the sled between playthroughs is purchased. The slow walking pace and the large distances between points of interest means players will spend quite a bit of time staring at the wintery environment.

Fade to Silence is a real grind due to the repeated playthroughs, the poor tutorials, the slow movement speeds, and missing quality of life features. Base building is a time and resource expensive process, but buildings can’t be moved once built. The buildings that are retained between playthroughs appear to stay in the same place, so players will need to destroy perfectly good buildings. Starting new games will take players through the initial tutorial each time, instead of providing the option to skip through.

The controls in Fade to Silence is rough. The game is built with consoles in mind, as controllers feel more natural. The menus are radial and designed for thumb sticks. Item management and crafting feels messy and unintuitive. The options for PC users are also limited. Basics like toggle to aim or sprint is missing. Several menu keys are hardcoded, so those who don’t use WASD or QWERTY keyboards may have trouble.

Visuals

The visuals are a mixed bag. Fade to Silence’s environment is nice. A lot of time has clearly been spent to create the winter wasteland where nature and Eldritch horrors battle to reclaim the remains of humanity. The enemy character design is good. The Eldritch horrors look alien, serving as a foil to the natural environment. On the other hand, the character models are rather clunky and awkward looking.

Audio

The audio experience is rough. The sound effects are probably the best of the bunch. A lot of attention has been paid to the sound of footsteps treading across a variety of wintery terrain. The sound effect alerts for low health, hunger, and cold are played way too often. Replacing half of the sound effect cues with visual cues would provide the same effect and be less annoying. The music itself is decent, mostly excelling at creepy horror-style music to build tension. The biggest issue lies in the inappropriate or overuse of tension setting music. The squeaky strings kick in randomly for no apparent reason, making the music ineffective when tension should be built up. The voice acting is also poor. Ash’s voice actor is barely passable, and everyone else falls behind. The player is supposed to develop a fatherly bond with Ash’s daughter, but her voice actor is bad enough for me to desire as little contact with her as possible.

Overall

The premise of a hardcore rogue-lite survival game is an attractive one. Unfortunately, Fade to Silence struggles with lousy writing, bad pacing, poor quality of life decisions, and a clunky feeling that never goes away. I can see a very small niche of gamers who will be willing to put up with the game’s quirks in exchange for a tough game combining Dark Souls-type combat and survival gameplay. On the other hand, most gamers can avoid the game’s clumsy execution and never feel like they’ve missed out in life.
