Our World is Ended

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch (Reviewed)

Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Over the years visual novels have grown fairly popular in the West to the point that they have even begun releasing on consoles. Some of these tend to be series that have already seen success on other platforms but now there are some that release flat out on consoles in the West such as Our World is Ended. Releasing on the Switch, whose handy portable mode and removable Joy-con make for easy play in almost any position which is already a bonus for visual novels, is Our World is Ended worth picking up?

Story

To those around the city it may appear to be some strange performance but Our World is Ended begins with Reiji Gozen wearing a completely enclosed AR headset in the middle of a busy street. Alongside the airheaded Yuno he is set to test out a new product being developed by his boss Owari. Working as the newest part-timer for the game development team known as Judgement 7 this awkward task fell to Reiji and after a few embarrassing phrases and poses, things seem to be going well s Owari projects bikini photos onto billboards and even changes Yuno’s clothing to a school swimsuit.

During one of these tests the system seems to shut itself down entirely only to reboot and show that the entire area has fallen to ruin and his friends are now hanging lifeless from a nearby building. With only a cryptic warning from a mysterious girl Reiji returns to the normal world where no one seems to have noticed any changes outside of the system crash. Originally attributed to heatstroke, Judgement 7 continues their day by starting a flame war with others online who found their most recent game lackluster. In an effort to capture their original success Owari suggests that the next game they develop make full use of augmented reality but it doesn’t take long before the rest of the development team begin to find themselves experiencing a phenomenon that only grows stranger as time progresses and with a possible destruction in their future, it is up to Reiji and the rest to solve this mystery.

The best part of a visual novel is when it manages to convey both an intriguing storyline as well as offer readers a great cast of characters that they can learn more about and enjoy over the course of the game. In more than a few ways Our World is Ended manages to pull that off but it also falters in both of these areas. Perhaps the biggest issue happens to be that this game suffers from a serious lack of focus when it comes to actually delivering the main plot, which on its own is a fairly solid sci-fi thriller with a unique cast of characters. While it makes sense that players should spend time meeting with and learning about the various members of Judgement 7, the majority of the group and the initial problem are introduced fairly quickly at the beginning of the game and then the actual development of the core plot falls to the wayside to then focus more on the cast of characters. This normally wouldn’t be too much of an issue but because the game spends so much time trying to focus on everything but the core plot there ends up being various rushed developments and twists to the story that easily could have been expanded upon a bit more rather than leave players with a messy feeling experience.

On the other side of things Our World is Ended offers such an eccentric cast of characters for its main cast that it is hard not to be at least a little charmed by the group, even if it is to see just how insane some of them can be at times. Reiji serves as the player’s view point and being the newest member of Judgement 7 he is also on the bottom rung of the group’s ladder though even if he were a bit more respected it is unlikely the cast would act much differently around him. Generally when a cast of characters are introduced they tend to fall into certain molds and eventually break out of them over the course of the game as the story develops and we learn more about them and while it is true that title Our World is Ended does that fairly well for most of its cast, it also features some of the most extreme examples of these character stylings you can find. Whether it is the air-headed girl, the one concerned about her flat-chest who is always called “saddening” by everyone, a massive pervert that freely says whatever he feels, a grandiose otaku that mixes English wording into his dialogue to sound cool, or a cold artistic type, or a genius youngster this title has it all and takes them to such a high level at times players will end up feeling rather shocked at times.

This does create something of a cyclone of character moments as players see these huge personalities clash together continuously throughout the game. In fact, the only way that this visual novel often can get away with spending so much time away from the core story is thanks to how quirky these characters actually are. It really helps draw the player into learning more about them and seeing their developments over the course of the game. That being said, if you aren’t a fan of fan-service jokes and crude humor in general than this may not be the game for you as most of the humor comes in that form. Thankfully those who enjoy it will find that there are plenty of perverted jokes and more to be found filled throughout the game’s lengthy story. This leads us to a visual novel that has issues holding a proper tone at times since it rarely feels like even the most serious situations are actually that dire since the humor can often be inserted in some rather poorly chosen places.

It is interesting to note that while the “common route” for Our World is Ended is extremely long, the game will deviate at points depending on what character you’ve happened to favor the most over the course of the game, bringing players towards several different endings that are later viewable on the game’s main menu with replays offering players the chance to aim for different endings.

Gameplay

For the most part Our World is Ended plays similar to many other visual novels as players will spend most of their time listening/reading the story as it progresses. It is interesting to note that the game is very generous with its save system as players can easily tap one shoulder button to create a quick save and then load that save at the tap of the other shoulder button. While players can make standard save files, this method works best when players are presented with a choice and they want to make sure they make the one best fitting the ending they are aiming for.

There are two types of choices in the game, a standard one where a few options are presented and there is an unlimited amount of time to select between them and a “Selection of Soul” system that is far more limited. This system features a number of dialogue choices that will quickly scroll across the screen similar to a Japanese video site and players will need to select from one of these options though being silent is also an option. Interestingly enough, players can even keep an eye on what character path they may be leaning towards as the game shows which three characters currently like Reiji the most. Since players will want to replay to see various endings, this system is quite useful and a great way to avoid wasting time should you mess up a choice.

Visuals & Audio

One of the first things players will notice when playing Our World is Ended is just how gorgeous the game can be at times. The art style features vibrant colors that bring the world to life and the highly detailed character portraits are a real treat even with their limited animations. In fact, even the static backgrounds are varied and detailed enough that they fit the game world perfectly and help provide a lot of life to the game, especially during a number of the crossover scenes. This art style especially shines whenever a CG is presented to the players though it is worth noting that while there is plenty of fan service, there is no actual nudity in this game though it does push the limits a bit.

The voice acting also happens to be quite phenomenal at times as players will really feel like the voice actors did their best to bring these absurdly eccentric characters to life. The game only features a Japanese voice track and while the localization does a fine enough job with most elements in the game, there are a few wording errors and misspelled words throughout the game that, while not a big issue, are noticeable.

Overall

Players will find that while the Our World is Ended’s story may have issues focusing, the eccentric cast of characters do a solid enough job holding things together. That being said, even for someone like myself who enjoys some raunchy humor this game does tend to take things a bit far and struggles to hold its tone at times so even dire situations often feel like they aren’t handled with enough weight as needed. As such the story found in this visual novel may not end up being as serious as one may expect given its name and initial presentation of doomsday but with gorgeous character designs and CG artwork accompanying a well voiced cast of characters, those looking for a visual novel that is a bit different from others will find that this one may just fit the bill.

Pagan Online Review

Pagan Online

Developer: Mad Head Games
Publisher: Wargaming.net
Platforms: Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 18 Apr 2019
Price: $19.99USD – Available Here

Overview

2019 was sure an exciting year. Though, I’m not really sure while I’m writing about it in the past tense since we still have a couple of months left. I’ve played some great AAA releases, nice indie surprises and plowed through a lot of genres. Yet, there is one that eluded me up to this moment. Ever since Torchlight games, I haven’t been able to find one decent ARPG to properly suck me in. So when I was given a chance to dive deeper into the world of Pagan Online, I was very much interested. Let’s see what’s in the store for us.

Story

The Gods are gone. That should be the tagline of Pagan Online. But really, you are thrown into this mythical and desolated realm where most of its creators are now nowhere to be seen. It’s up to you to ask questions and find out what happened through hordes of slain monsters. The developers say that a lot of the inspirations for the design and lore is drawn from Slavic mythology so expect occasional references to Perun and Czernobog. You have a starting choice between two melee fighters and one ranged caster, you’ve given some potions and off you go.

Gameplay

Right off the bat, I can say that the game is incredibly fluid and well optimized. I decided to go with ranged caster whip lady and I had no difficulties taking down the mobs of goblins. Every character has a decent number of attacks for dealing with lone enemies as well as mobs. Pagan Online is also fairly generous with drops so every hour of gameplay you’ll come across on a new favorite weapon. The formula is simple. Kill enemies, level up, unlock access to new abilities, take down bosses and unlock access to new areas. Rinse and repeat. It sounds (and looks) pretty bland on a surface, but Pagan Online hides so much more underneath After fiddling with options, you’ll find that the game offers an extensive customization feature for your character(s) and soon in the game, you’ll unlock the access to the weapon forge. Weapon forge offers a chance to morph your under-powered weapon into an improved one (at the cost of a crafting recipe). And you can also sell them to earn some quick gold. And of course, the most important feature of the game is that later you can team up with other players to clear difficult areas or finally take down that nasty boss.

Visuals

If the game lore draws a lot from Slavic mythology, the visuals take a bit from Torchlight series. Not all though, since later on in the game, things get pretty grim, visually and storywise. You’ll go through the areas of scorched earth, monster-infested deserts, poisonous swamps, and desolated cities. In fact, everywhere you go, you get the feeling that the whole realm is abandoned by Gods and everyone else. It makes for an interesting atmosphere. There was one area later in the game that invoked the feeling of stumbling through the ruins of The Ringed City in Dark Souls 3.

Audio

While the audio segment doesn’t offer anything new or exciting, you can count on the whole soundtrack of Pagan Online to be constantly gloomy and ominous. There are strong orchestral themes that follow you everywhere you go. From murdering mobs of monsters to taking down bosses, the music always sets you in the anxious mood and gives you a feeling that the harder fight is just around the corner. Voice acting is also good although there are moments (well, buggy moments) where it can get a bit irritating. Whenever you die during a story quest near a talkative NPC, there is a good chance their voice their scripted lines can get three times louder, not to mention annoying. Who knows, maybe it’s a game’s subtle way of forcing us to die less and be better players.

Overall

Pagan Online is one of those tricky games that sucks you in before you notice. I find myself playing it on a daily basis and finding a new excuse every time to start it up. Sometimes it is to replay an area hoping for a new weapon/armor drop, to help someone in co-op and at the end of the day, it’s just a great game to lose a couple of hours when you’re not sure what else to play. Pretty soon every pondering leads to a couple of hours of Pagan Online. To be fair, the game also had excellent timing to come out during a dry season of this genre, so if you’re on a lookout for a decent ARPG, Pagan Online should be your first and safest choice.

Judgment Review

Judgment

Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
Publisher: Sega
Platform: PlayStation 4
Release Date: June 25, 2019
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $99.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Looking back over the past few years it would be hard to believe that the Yakuza series and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio were once a questionable localization since not only have the games gained quite a bit of popularity but their English releases seemed to come out quicker with each iteration. Now not only has this developer been given the chance to spread their wings a bit and try a new original storyline separate from the Yakuza series but it has even been localized with an English dub. With Judgment being the first game in some time to be given this type of treatment, has Sega’s trust in this developer paid off?

Story

Takayuki Yagami may have had a tough childhood and his way through law school may have been backed by some less than lawful people but that didn’t stop him from being at the top of his game as a lawyer, even getting a rare acquittal on a murder charge for one of his clients. Unfortunately when a defense attorney manages to get someone freed from prison only for that person to then potentially murder someone once again, that will quickly sour anyone’s career.

In fact thanks to this outcome Yagami has spent his last few years working instead as a private detective taking on any odd job that will help pay the bills be it tracking down a cat to spying on a cheating spouse while being assisted by a former Yakuza member that was expelled from his clan. As players step into Takayuki’s shoes a number of strange murders have been taking place throughout Kamurocho and now this most recent murder has found one of his old acquaintances needing a little extra helped. Initially hired to do some leg-work for his old law office with the insistence of some members of the Tojo clan that helped bring him up, the truth behind these murders is far more complicated and has closer ties to Takayuki than anyone could have expected.

Now while the mention of the Tojo Clan may ring true for veterans of the Yakuza series, players shouldn’t worry about needing any prior knowledge of those games before diving into Judgment. Outside of these familiar names players will find that this game is a separate entity all on its own and this works in its benefit story wise as not only can newcomers enjoy the story as it is but it also provides everyone with a fresh take on the world and new cast of characters to see grow and learn more about over the course of the game.

As a whole Takayuki is a different approach to a central character for the developer as he is not only more tech savvy than usual but he isn’t tied down by things like clan hierarchy, giving him a bit more freedom both in the world itself and with his personality. By having such a strong leading character the numerous acquaintances and other allies that players meet while progressing the story feel just as strong as they play well off of Takayuki’s personality. Combine a well-written cast with a wide range of personalities together with an engrossing storyline that features a number of twists and turns that will keep players on their toes and you have a game that players will constantly want to push forward in just to see what could happen next.

In fact thanks to this strong core storyline players will notice that the side-missions actually have to be tracked down a bit more than in the Yakuza series. Rather than simply stumbling across them Takayuki will be able to make friends with various shop owners and other people throughout Kamurocho. Not only does this help make the city feel more like an actual living one but also tends to be how players find a number of side-missions, described as side cases, in the game. These range from being a bit more on the serious side to completely ridiculous. Balancing the tone of the game between serious drama and comedic gold can be a difficult task but the developers have pulled it off perfectly since most of the oddest elements are relegated to these side activities that players have to track down when they feel like taking a breather from the core story.

Gameplay

Shortly after beginning the game players will find that they will have mostly free reign to explore the city of Kamurocho. This means that players will generally be able to spend time messing around with mini-games or taking part in street brawls while traveling between various mission markers that start up either main quests or side quests. Taking part in all kinds of activities, defeating enemies in combat, as well as completing missions reward Takayuki with points that can be used to increase his health, unlock more combat moves, or provide extra bonuses that either make certain detective activities or side missions a bit easier.

Combat in Judgment has been made a bit more streamlined as Takayuki is the master of two styles of combat that can be swapped immediately at the tap of the button. The styles that he can use happen to be the single-target high damage moveset of the Tiger or the crowd control based Crane style. Both of these moves have a unique set of attacks that help keep combat feeling varied and not only do these two styles still favor a faster style of movement but Takayuki can even perform wall jumps into special moves and take various evasive actions that some of the stiffer previous main characters couldn’t have dreamed of.

This combat works incredibly well and as you fight and defeat foes players will fill up an EX gauge that can be used to perform EX actions (heat moves) that are stylish finishing moves on the enemies. It is worth noting that while some standard brawls are mostly a piece of cake, the game does ramp up the difficulty at a satisfying pace as foes start to use more damaging weapons that will actually remove chunks of your health bar that cannot be restored simply by drinking an energy drink or eating at a restaurant. Instead these type of damage can only be restored permanently by using a medical kit to patch yourself up or actually visiting a doctor. This helps ramp up the difficulty a bit that doesn’t feel challenging and instead keeps players on their toes.

Since Takayuki is a detective now players also have a number of new mechanics to deal with. These come in the form of asking questions in the proper order which will reward the player with more points to improve their skills. While there isn’t really a negative to choosing the wrong order in questions it feels rewarding to get information as efficiently as possible. Players must also now tail certain targets which tend to almost always play out the same way by staying far enough back to not raise suspicion and taking cover behind objects to avoid being detected when your target looks around. More often than not these tailing missions turn into chase sequences that see players needing to catch up and take down their target usually by dodging through crowds and obstacles while taking part in quick time events to avoid slowing down.

A few other aspects such as having to investigate a crime scene or location to find clues or track down a target using a vague description also appear. The latter is a simple enough task that actually has some unique qualities to it while the former can be a bit frustrating at times since some objects of interest can only be seen from certain angles, making them more annoying than rewarding at times. Oddly enough there is even a lock-picking mini-game that, while okay on its own, is placed in the worst locations sometimes and really breaks up the flow of some missions.

The various mini-games remain a strong source of fun for those who want to reminisce about older Sega titles such as classic games like Puyo Puyo, Virtua Fighter 5, Viper Fighters, of course UFO catcher machines that give plushies that can then be used to decorate the office, a rail shooter featuring zombies invading Kamurocho, and more. There are even some more modern side activities such as drone racing to take part in if you feel like or learning the intricacies of mahjong.

Visuals & Audio

The flair and style that Ryu Ga Gotoku are known for when it comes to providing detailed character models continues to hold true in Judgment. The fighting animations feel incredibly fluid as both of Takayuki’s fighting styles flow together well between combo moves and, although some are clearly hold-overs of previous Heat moves, the fancy EX actions remain a true delight. It is worth noting that although the city of Kamurocho has been once again given a bit of a face lift and a number of areas do feature some unique stylings compared to other games from the developer, it is a bit difficult not to notice how similar a lot of the environment can still be and how it was simply carried forward into this release.

For the first time since the original release of Yakuza 2 Sega has given Judgment the English voice acting treatment and given the player the choice to select between either the new English dub or the original Japanese voice track at their leisure. Thanks both in part to the great localization efforts from the company as well as the wide array of voice actors in the game and their serious efforts in bringing the game’s writing to life, the English dub works wonders in what is still a very Japanese style game. This means that those who wish to play in English will find the voice cast doing the story the justice it deserves but if you wish to hear the original Japanese all of their voice work is still available as a viable option. It is worth noting that while the background music and sound effects for the game work fairly well, the lack of certain side-activities such as karaoke are a bit disappointing.

Overall

By going outside of their usual comfort zone Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has managed to develop a fresh new experience that newcomers and longtime fans of the company will enjoy. By crafting an extremely satisfying story that features a refreshing cast of characters and a narrative that manages to balance its drama heavy storyline with its more comedic side-activities Judgment may still feel a bit too familiar to some of the developer’s recent works at times but easily succeeds at delivering an experience that stands up just fine on its own.

Steel Division 2 is the sequel to the real-time strategy title Steel Division: Normandy 44, which was released to critical acclaim in 2017. Players can play in different variations of the fast-paced Skirmish mode, solo or online against human opponents. UTILISE POWERFUL NEW WEAPONRY IN A.O.T. 2: FINAL BATTLE

UTILISE POWERFUL NEW WEAPONRY IN A.O.T. 2: FINAL BATTLE

Unleash a Variety of New Attacks to Overcome Devastating Foes

Hertfordshire, 20th June 2019 – KOEI TECMO Europe released a wealth of information today on the new battle systems featured in their upcoming title, A.O.T. 2: Final Battle. The latest entry in their intense action game series, based on the worldwide anime phenomenon ‘Attack on Titan’, is slated for release on the 5th July 2019 for the PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System, Nintendo Switch™,the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, and digitally on Windows PC via Steam®.

In A.O.T. 2: Final Battle, the colossal size of enemies dictates more powerful equipment if the Scouts intend to survive. To up the ante, alongside the traditional Slashing Gear, Scouts can now equip the even more deadly Shooting Gear. Replacing blades for guns allows for long-range attacks along with a variety of different ammo types that offer different types of damage, including: Regular Shot, Scatter Shot, Explosive Shot, Attrition Shot, Numbing Shot and Incendiary Shot Ammo. Re-loading ammo is as easy as replacing gas and blades – though in Final Battle if players release the reload button as the dial hits the ‘yellow’ area, they will achieve a perfect reload and the resource in use will not deplete for a short time. Players can quickly change between the Shooting and Slashing Gear load-outs at supply bases in the field as adapting to the battle situation is key to defeat the Titans.

The impressive Showdown Equipment is also on-hand to provide Scouts a massive increase of power in battle. Two options are available to them, the revolutionary ‘Thunder Spear’ quickly deals explosive damage to wipe out Titans, and the ‘Gatling Guns’ unload high levels of magazines which rip through any Titan part in sight. Once this equipment is obtained in battle, and the Showdown Equipment gauge filled, they are able to unleash high damage attacks for a limited period. These powerful weapons were showcased in a set of new action trailers released today by KOEI TECMO Europe.

Aspiring Scouts eager to put this new equipment into action are able to pre-order now and get their hands-on bonus content for the ultimate ‘Attack on Titan’ experience. Those who purchase A.O.T. 2: Final Battle, physically or digitally, on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC (via STEAM) during the first month of launch will receive the “Queen Historia” costume for Christa, “Young Male Coat” for Kenny, “Plain Clothes (Underground City)” for Levi, and “One-piece Dress” costume for Mikasa. PlayStation 4 players will also receive early access to playable characters Kenny and Zeke when purchasing within the first month, while Nintendo Switch and Xbox One players that pre-order the game ahead of launch will be able to unlock these two characters, as well as Eren (Long Hair), early for their roster.
