CornBilt Steams into Gen Con 2019 with LocoMotives

Gallop over to the Tilt Five area in Hall C to get hands-on with this fast-pacedWild West strategy game!

Mountain View, Calif.—July 26, 2019—CornBilt announced today that they will be showcasing the digital version of the upcoming LocoMotives at Gen Con 2019 at the Tilt Five area in Hall C. An epic game of town building, track laying and bandit fighting set in the Wild West for 1-4 players, LocoMotives is currently available for free in digital format for PC, Mac, Android, iOS and webGL, with the tabletop version coming soon to Kickstarter.

“All of us on the team have been playing and making up tabletop games since we were kids, and we met through the game society in college,” said Todd Porter, CEO of CornBilt. “While our various careers took us down different paths, we’ve now come full circle back to LocoMotives, an addictive strategy game that’s fun for all ages.” Combining elements of classic tabletop games like Ticket to Ride and Catan with the crazy sights and explosive sounds of the Wild West, LocoMotives pits players in a race to build the greatest railroad empire using four decks of 60 Cards and 48 Good, Bad and Kinda Ugly Characters. In the digital version, players may test their wits against up to three AI opponents, and up to four players can compete via hotseat. A tutorial quickly familiarizes players with the basics, and a high falutin’ soundtrack sets the Western mood.

LocoMotives will be a featured title on the upcoming AR board game platform, Tilt Five. The game debuts IsoTiles™, a proprietary technology that generates realistic 3D boards and pieces. This approach uses Unity, a game development tool used to create half of the world’s digital games.

“Our glasses create a holographic image of the board game and don’t block out the world around you,” said Jeri Ellsworth, CEO of Tilt Five. “As a fast-paced game with a lot of humor and player interaction, LocoMotives is a perfect fit for the platform.”For all the latest news, visit www.cornbilt.com and follow us on Facebook.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead Preview

Iratus: Lord of the Dead

Developer: Unfrozen
Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment
Platform: Windows
Release Date: 24 July 2019
Price: $22.49 USD/$32.35 AUD – Available Here

Video Preview

Iratus: Lord of the Dead is making evil cool again. Players take on the role of Iratus, a necromancer recently freed from a thousand years in prison. He’s not wasting any time and is off to conquer the world once again, slaying any do-good hero that might get in his way.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead is a rouge-like tactical RPG. Developed by Russian developers Unfrozen, the game aims to be a combination of Darkest Dungeon and Overlord. Players work their way through the levels of a dungeon, battling their way through a series of four versus four battles. As a rogue-like game, the death of a minion is permanent. Luckily, a steady stream of body parts from fallen enemies provides players with all the raw material needed to craft replacements soldiers.

We checked out the build that was available at the game’s Steam Early Access launch. The game is mostly feature complete. The game has three out of five levels completed, 16 playable minions, and a full suite of tools for Iratus to use. Future builds will bring more levels, minions, and enemies.

This game is designed to be hard. At the end of battle, minions who participated in combat will not heal. Minion death is permanent. Losing an entire squad means players must build a new squad and finish off the remaining enemies in the engagement. While losing a minion is painful, it is survivable since players can use parts collected from previous battles to create a new, more powerful minion. Parts are finite though, so players still need to be careful in combat.

Enemies are usually very close in power to the player’s own minions. To win, players will need to exploit enemy weaknesses. Enemies can be killed through health or stress damage. Health can be damaged through physical or magical means. Stress is a little more convoluted. As more stress damage is done, enemies randomly gain an insanity debuff, which can range from an unimpressive loss in evasion to a much more appealing flee. Once the stress level is down to zero, the enemy has a chance of dying every time it takes more stress damage.

While Iratus has his minions do most of his work, he’s no pushover himself either. He has a variety of buildings to increase item, experience and health gains. Four skill trees offer buffs for minions, special spells for Iratus to cast in battle, and extra loot from battle.

Minion crafting is an interesting affair. Body parts and equipment drop from fallen enemies. Rarer parts will impart bonus stats. While losing a minion is annoying, brains will drop occasionally from enemies. Sticking them into a minion will instantly increase the minion’s level. This is also a great way of getting freshly made minions with high end parts up to speed with the rest of the party.

Considering the game has just launched on Steam Early Access, it’s surprisingly well balanced. Combat is brutal, but generally feels fair. Enemies have clear weaknesses and winning requires teams to have synergizing abilities. Each level of the dungeon has its own enemy groups, so there is plenty of time for players to optimize their teams. The boss fights are tough with some very nasty mechanics to amp up the difficulty. Stress feels like a good starting point for future tuning. It’s definitely less flexible than health damage, and the RNG required for kill can be frustrating.

The controls are solid for the most part. The game can be played entirely with a mouse. There are some keyboard shortcuts for abilities, but there is no option to rebind the keys. The menu layout outside of combat is good except for unit management. It’s mostly done at the graveyard located outside of the tower, where players shift units between buildings, active squads, and the mortuary. Unit inventory and stats can only be seen in the tower, requiring players to bounce back and forth between the graveyard and the tower.

If there is one small change that Iratus: Lord of the Dead could use, it’s a quick save button. If a player quits the game mid-combat, it counts as a surrender and the entire squad of minions die. I can understand the need to prevent players from cheating by using alt-F4 to forcibly quit the game and fall back to the save before combat began, but not being able to create a temporary save and quit the game when life gets in the way is frustrating.

The audio/visual presentation in Iratus: Lord of the Dead is excellent so far. The art style is dark fantasy and is a homage to one of the game’s inspirations, Darkest Dungeon. The sound effects and soundtrack are solid. Stefan Weyte of Blood fame does a great job as Iratus.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead is living up to its promise of being Darkest Dungeon meets Overlord. Considering the game just hit Steam Early Access, it’s already very sound mechanically. While the game could use some minor balancing and a few quality of life changes, Iratus: Lord of the Dead could easily slap in more content and still earn itself a decent review score tomorrow.

July 26, 2019 – Pagan Online, the hack-and-slash action RPG from Wargaming and Mad Head Games, will exit Early Access on August 27. At launch, the game will feature extensive updates and revamped systems based on player feedback gathered during Early Access. Pagan Online combines classic top-down action RPG gameplay with session-based PVE action, unique characters, and combat that will challenge even the most seasoned players. The release version will have a price tag of AUD$30.

New content and changes coming to Pagan Online at launch include:

  • Full story campaign – Featuring eight total acts, new zones and maps, and two new bosses
  • Click-to-move controls and full controller support – Originally designed for WASD controls, the control scheme has been extended due to popular demand
  • Two new playable characters – Joining the battle and expanding the roster of heroes players can choose from are:
    • Elden – A quick and nimble dual-wielding ice construct with high attack speed, capable of slowing and potentially freezing enemies with each slice.
    • Hector – An agile scrapper who specializes in everything fire. His weapon of choice is blunderbuss and he uses dirty tricks to set the battleground ablaze.
  • Fabled Weapons – Some Legendary Weapons could be upgraded to Fabled by overcoming Pagan Online’s toughest battles.
  • Schools of Magic – Ultra rare gear sets that boost stats and provide awesome new looks.
  • Revamped crafting and loot drop systems – Making drops more valuable, diverse, and immediately usable, while recipes become more rare and have a bigger impact.
  • All-new skill trees –  Letting players build and spec out unique heroes by improving, modifying, and unlocking new abilities.
  • End-game content – Providing new types of challenges for players to experience while continually evolving favourite heroes.

“Since we began closed alpha testing 10 months ago,  Pagan Online has been constantly evolving with the help of our players,” said Uros Banjesevic, Chief Creative Officer of Mad Head Games. “During our 4 month run in Early Access we have implemented massive changes and amazing new features and mechanics to deliver the best possible 1.0 experience at full launch. It is going to be, literally, a different game.”

“While this is a premium title, it is also a service, and players can expect regular updates to the game both in content and gameplay,” said Jacob Beucler, Product Director at Wargaming. “We are committed to continue to iterate on our game. We are excited to not only end the Early Access journey, but also to begin building what comes next.”

The launch version of Pagan Online will be exclusively playable before release at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany August 20-24 in the Wargaming booth (Booth A031 in Hall 8.1). Players who demo at the booth will receive an exclusive in-game pet, Decimator the dragon, while players who log in to the Early Access version during Gamescom will receive another exclusive in-game pet, Mighty Mut the brave raccoon.

One more good news for Gamescom visitors would be the live performance of Swedish power metal band Sabaton – two times Metal Hammer Golden Gods Best Live Band – who happen to be special guests of Wargaming booth on Gamescom. Pagan Online fans interested in one of the best heavy metal shows may expect live performance of the song “Swedish Pagans” (among others). Sabaton themed legendary weapons for every playable character and Sabaton themed playable character skin will await players in the game.

The Pagan Online team has also introduced a community initiative called the Might & Glory Club. This club gives content creators, streamers, artists, bloggers and everyone who creates on constant basis or has a community of any size an opportunity to take part in the launch of Pagan Online launch and to be mentioned in the game’s credits.

Club members will be granted access and will be able to stream and publish videos and other content on the release version of Pagan Online a week before launch. Every day from August 21st to 25th the Pagan Online team and its media partners will nominate Heroes of Pagan Online from authors of the most creative and resonant pieces of content. Heroes selected during this event will be included in the game credits and their content will receive media support from Pagan Online and its media partners. Fantasy Strike Now Available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC

Fantasy Strike Now Available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC

EMERYVILLE, Calif. – 26 July, 2019 – Fantasy Strike, the new fighting game from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix lead designer David Sirlin, launches today for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 while punching its way out of Steam Early Access on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Fantasy Strike is both a deep tournament game for hardcore genre fans and an introduction to the genre for newcomers. Its design philosophy centers around making the often-opaque aspects of the genre clear and understandable and helping players get to the strategic, decision-making phase of competition as soon as possible.

Beginners benefit from in-depth video tutorials for all 10 characters. These five-minute videos, available via a slick interface in the Learn section of the Main Menu, are narrated by game director David Sirlin. Novices and experts alike all benefit from innovative frame advantage visual effects — never seen in any fighting game before. This imagery communicates with each hit who will recover first and by how much, teaching players which attacks are risky and even shows moves that can be safe depending on timing and spacing.

The online play system seeks to further innovate in the genre by allowing one-click challenges from the in-game friends menu, as well as one-click spectating of any friend. The Ranked Mode uses built-on-the-fly tournaments and a team battle system unlike that of other games; it’s specifically designed to create maximum variety in character matchups for the community. The network code itself uses the excellent GGPO technology combined with proprietary latency-hiding tech that results in extraordinarily smooth online play for a fighting game.

Fantasy Strike also ships with a variety of single-player modes, including a traditional Arcade Mode with beautifully-illustrated story sequences, four Survival Modes, Daily Challenges, and a substantial Boss Rush mode where players build a deck of powerups against increasingly powerful AI bosses.

“I think it’s exciting that Fantasy Strike delivers as much or even more depth than players are used to in this genre while only needing a fraction of the complexity to do it,” said David Sirlin, game director, Sirlin Games. “We look forward to welcoming new faces into the community now that the game is available on consoles and in full release on PC.”

Fantasy Strike is out now via the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and Steam for $29.99 / €32.99 / £28.99 / $46.99 AUD and supports English, French, Spanish, Norwegian, and

Japanese language options.

To learn more about Fantasy Strike, visit the official website and follow the game on Twitter.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Coming Exclusively to the Epic Games Store on December 10th, Closed Beta Planned for November

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Coming Exclusively to the Epic Games Store on December 10th, Closed Beta Planned for November

VANCOUVER – July 25, 2019 – Developer Piranha Games today announced that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the classic series’ first single player campaign-focused entry in more than 17 years, will now drop into battle on December 10th exclusively on the Epic Games store. Community preorder pilots will be able to run practice missions in November via a closed beta ahead of the game’s full launch.

“Our partnership with the Epic Games store allows Piranha the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible,” said Russ Bullock, executive producer. “Since we announced the development of the first single-player MechWarrior game in 17 years, we have stated that our goal was to deliver to fans a MechWarrior: Mercenaries experience with true freedom of choice and to be able to share that experience in a coop setting.

Understandably some fans will be disappointed that they have to wait a short while longer for MechWarrior 5, but it’s important to Piranha Games that we absolutely get this right. We are happy to say that our new partnership with Epic Games store allows us the time and ability to accomplish our goals both in the games development and marketing efforts.”

Fans looking to obtain refunds from their preorder of any tier are able to do so by September 1st. Preorder refunds of any tier will be refunded in full. Additionally, fans seeking refunds will be able to keep all bonus MechWarrior Online content from the Standard, Collector and Ultimate Editions of the preorder, which amount to $100, $180, and $300 dollars worth of in-game currency and content for MechWarrior Online including all bonus items like XP, premium time, badges, decals, cockpit items and more, depending on which preorder tier they purchased. Refunded preorders will be unable to participate in the upcoming closed beta for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, now scheduled for November as well as lose the exclusive MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC items.

More detailed information on announced features coming to MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries can be found at the game’s FAQ: https://mw5mercs.com/faq.

Piranha Games will host two Town Hall sessions this week: The first begins tonight at 6:00 p.m. PT for fans located in North America, and the second Town Hall is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT tomorrow, July 26th, for fans located in Europe. Both events will take place on the community preorder Discord. Fans are encouraged to join the conversation and voice their thoughts.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is modeled after the gameplay style from MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, granting players the freedom to run their campaigns how they choose. In MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, pilots will build, manage, and guide their own mercenary unit through a multi-year campaign during the sprawling Third and Fourth Succession Wars enjoying by far the greatest amount of player freedom and choice compared to past titles.

Whether braving missions alone, alongside AI-controlled pilots, or with the help of up to three friends via co-op play, pilots will face complicated situations with no perfect solution as they choose which contracts to accept, where in the Inner Sphere to direct their attention, and how to balance repairs or upgrades with maintaining their unit’s precious resources.

Players must locate and scavenge their own weapons, vehicles and supplies, and defeat every player in a visually and tactically rich battleground that forces players into a shrinking play zone.
