Xenosaga HD Collection “Failed Profitable Market Analysis”

With so many different HD collections coming out and bringing fan favorite series back from the dead, there are always a few slightly more niche series that fans hope to hear about and while there may have been some hope for the Xenosaga series at some point, that hope has been dashed. While speaking with fans through Twitter Bandai Namco‘s Katsuhiro Harada revealed that while the company was thinking about releasing an HD collection featuring the three Xenosaga games that they would not be moving forward with the project as it “failed in a profitable market analysis.”

He went on to explain that the global market was also factored into the aspect of releasing the games and that plans would still not move forward. It is interesting to note that while the Monolith Soft developed trilogy of RPGs were released in their entirety in Japan and North America from 2002 to 2006 those in Europe only ever saw the second game in the series released.

Explore the Timeline of New Content & Features Leading to 2018’s Action Game of the Year Award

Bordeaux, France (Dec. 23, 2019) Motion Twin and Evil Empire today released Dead CellsLegacy Update, a massive addition which features new items, mutations, and other stocking stuffers beside its key present to the community; fans can now defy time and return to Dead Cells’ previous iterations, exploring the range of features and mechanics within distinctive builds which paved the way for the critically acclaimed roguelite.

The Legacy Update spans back to Dead Cells’ very first Early Access version and will continue to gather new builds as the game evolves. The team couldn’t help but add a few extra bonuses, too; the Legacy Update includes two new mutations, rebalancing for the 3 least-used weapons and a Santa skin, which is kitsch as hell, as it should certainly be.

“As dedicated as we have been and remain to growing and refining Dead Cells, we’ve heard from select community members mourning the loss of their personal favorite elements from prior builds,” said Joan Blachere, creative director at Evil Empire. “Our goal with the Legacy Update is to help veteran fans rediscover their favorite moments from Dead Cells’ expansive build archive while letting curious newcomers explore what’s led to the version familiar to them. Giving the gift of time travel while still keeping future updates available to everyone is about as close to a Christmas miracle as we can get.”

Dead Cells is a metroidvania action platformer set within an ever-changing castle stuffed with powerful gear, cunning foes, and tons of secrets to discover. Every run through the keep allows players to shape their loadout as they please from a wildly varied arsenal while choosing their path through the keep’s distinctively dangerous sections. Paired with a steady series of post-launch content, Dead Cells’ heavy emphasis on experimentation and deciding when to favor risk over reward keeps each playthrough fresh and exciting.

Lost Ember Review

Lost Ember

Developer: Mooneye Studios
Publisher: Mooneye Studios
Platforms: Xbox One (Reviewed), Switch, PlayStation 4, PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview

Traveling around a world and examining everything it has to offer is nothing new when it comes to adventure games but what if, instead of a standard human, players explored the world as a variety of animals? Long have games that featured playable animals felt like a special little addition but Lost Ember does more than simply offer it as a side-attraction, it is instead the core focus. With players taking on the role of a wolf but stepping into a variety of other creatures all while on a journey of discovery, is Lost Ember worth exploring?

Story

Lost Ember sets the stage by explaining that the Yanrana people have had a longstanding cultural belief that when they pass away their souls move onto the City of Light. Unfortunately a wandering soul finds itself trapped within a barrier with no way to find a way to the afterlife and after attempting to communicate with the various living creatures around it, the soul manages to speak with a wolf. This wolf is also a lost soul who has seemingly been banished from the City of Light and has accepted her fate with no memory of her time as a human.

Choosing to follow the lost soul, the Wolf immediately discovers its previous name and begins a journey that shatters the barriers blocking the soul from moving through the world all while revealing more and more memories about the fate of the wolf. These memories range from heartwarming initially before breaking that heart as numerous terrible truths are revealed through narration by the lost soul and fully voiced artistic scenes. That being said, while the story does pack a solid emotional punch, it quickly becomes apparent what certain twists will occur in the latter half of the game. In fact, past the initial negative memory it will likely be clear what route Lost Ember will take and while this doesn’t hamper the story too badly, it is a bit too predictable.

Gameplay

At its core Lost Ember is all about exploration. There are no enemies to fight and the only puzzles that the player has to solve is how to get to the next location to progress the story and of course collecting plenty of little collectibles scattered throughout the map. To do this they will be making use of the wolf’s special ability to possess other animals that live in the world. While the wolf is fast and able to make small leaps, there are plenty of other creatures far better suited for exploring certain areas and that is where the game’s body changing mechanic shines.

While things start off a bit simple, with players being introduced to a wombat that can roll around and fit through small holes, to a duck that can fly through the air, the options begin to open up as there are numerous little places in every area that players can explore with various creatures. Tiny tunnels can be explored by smaller creatures such as wombats, moles, and more, high peaks can be reached by using a hummingbird, parrot, and others, and even the waterways are accessible through many different kinds of fish, including catfish but that is only the tip as other larger creatures can also be possessed to tackle certain areas and for the most part, players can choose to navigate around the world however they please, though there are some areas that do require specific animals to progress.

It is a bit unfortunate however that, while it is possible to explore as much as whichever animal you can find and swap into, there are some species that control far worse than others and have some odd limitations like a certain feathered fowl that lacks the ability to fly up. Along those same lines the soul-shifting from any creature to the wolf ends up having its fair share of hiccups and while the game does prevent accidental transformations when underwater, in the air, or underground there were more than a few moments that saw the wolf falling through the ground after shifting out of a creature on flat terrain and even more so when near anything slanted. Also players will need to be wary of taking some animals into locations meant for others as the camera often struggles to stay within the boundary of the map in these cases.

It is nice to note that there are plenty of collectibles for players to track down and this helps give the game’s explorative element far more weight as many of these collectibles are very well hidden, even when using the proper creature to track it down. Relics are the most interesting, and second most plentiful, collectibles, as these tend to be items from the world itself and can provide extra bits of information about the game’s backstory and tribe as well as more than a few Easter Eggs for other games, while the other two collectibles are a bit bland in the form of too many mushrooms that sprout when gathered and a handful of “Legendary” animals that are simply the same model but glow bright white when found.

Visuals & Audio

When it comes to presentation Lost Ember both excels and falters a bit depending on where players are exploring at any given time. The animals that they can control are nicely detailed using the game’s unique art style and even have a variety of different color patterns to keep things fresh and the different biomes the wolf and soul travel through are varied well enough but more than a few times the environment can look great at a distance only for it to be dull when actually traveling through it.

The voice work, which is present through the soul’s narration and flashback scenes, fits well enough with the narrator really standing out as a driving force here and the game’s sound effects for the various animals work well enough, though when it comes to certain animals they are a bit on the simpler sounding side. The background music is a mix of soothing tracks that are an excellent fit given the exploration aspect of the game, allowing players to easily relax and spend time traveling the world should they choose.

Overall

Lost Ember offers a unique exploration game that offers plenty of options to explore a world unlike what many other games in the genre have offered and although the story is a bit predictable, it still packs a solid emotional punch to keep players going. That being said, the amount of times that a checkpoint needed to be reloaded due to glitches is far too frequent and the occasionally dull environments put a bit of a hamper on what is otherwise an enjoyable and often relaxing feeling adventure game.

Everreach: Project Eden Review

Everreach: Project Eden

Developer: Elder Games
Publisher: Headup Games
Platform: PlayStation 4 (Coming Soon), Xbox One, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 4 December 2019
Price: $24.99 USD/$35.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Everreach: Project Eden is a story driven action RPG. The game is set on the planet Eden, home of Earth’s next colony for the ultrarich. Trouble is afoot as a mysterious mutiny has broken out among the scientists, technicians, and construction crews building the settlement for the incoming colonists. Nora Harwood and her team has been sent to the planet to investigate and put an end to the mutiny.

Story

Everreach: Project Eden aims to be an epic space drama but fails horribly. The dialogue is dry and feels forced at times. The characters are shallow and often painfully cliché. The story generally swings between dull and confusing. Major plot points do not always make sense and some just appear from nowhere. The ending is so abrupt, it almost felt like a car accident. It’s as if the writer originally had a story for a game three to four times larger than Everreach but was forced to aggressively hack away at the script to make it fit.

Gameplay

Everreach: Project Eden is a mess. The level design is awful. The game is extremely short to begin with, easily beaten in a few hours. A large chunk of the game consists of vehicle sections where players simply navigate around long maps until they run into a cluster of enemies or dodge incoming fire. These sections feel like they were hastily bolted into the game to artificially lengthen it. Another major level of the game is just walking simulator where players go from audio log to audio log. The entire thing could have easily been replaced with a cut scene. The game has plenty of obvious side paths with bonus loot, but they have no compelling puzzles that challenge the player in a positive way. Certain chests are locked with one of two puzzles. One challenges players to connect all the dots under 30 seconds, while the other requires player to dodge incoming objects for 30 seconds. Oddly enough, the dots challenge only gives players one try. The dodging challenge lets players try as many times as they want, if they can endure the frustrating randomness of the puzzle.

Combat is terrible. The gun play feels mushy and bland. Players only have access to a pistol and a rifle. The pistol is too inaccurate, too slow, too short ranged, and too weak to be useful. The crosshairs try to replicate a gun sight but are too large to be useful at range.  The hit boxes and models are poor. Enemy hitboxes don’t always match the models. Weapons often clip through the objects, allowing players to safely shoot at enemy while hidden behind cover. The AI is stupid.  Many times, the AI will stand in place and try to shoot it out instead of making any real attempt to get into cover to flank. Other times, the AI does not respond to gunfire, content to let the player empty a magazine into their back.

The controls are not great. Camera movement is simple and sometime unintuitive, especially when dealing with enemies lower than the player. Nova feels clumsy and often gets stuck on corners. The lack of a jump button makes navigation more frustrating than it needs to be.

The rare bright spot is the skill progression system. It’s a web of skills and buffs in the vein of Path of Exile and Final Fantasy’s orb level system. While players won’t fill the entire web, there is a lot of flexibility for players to decide if they want a spellcaster type experience, a straight shooter, or something in between.

The PC version is poor. The options are extremely limited. While the game was reasonably stable, it oftentimes felt like a cheap PC port. Key bindings can only be configured in the main menu, and certain keys are hard coded.

Visuals

The visuals are a two-part problem. First, the small dev team may have tackled a bigger project than they could handle. The animations are rough. Characters in cutscenes are practically bobble heads with the exaggerated head movement but are contrasted with the stone-like facial animation.

The second part of the problem is purely bad stylistic choices. Cutscenes are hard to watch due to the aggressive use of camera cuts and an unnecessary shaky-cam style. The worst of the shaky-cam has been patched out, but the cutscenes still pretty disorienting. The artists have also overused visual effects like bloom. Careful use of visual tricks at the right time can accent a game, but Everreach: Project Eden really demonstrates how bad things look when artists hand out effects like candy on Halloween. The result is a mess that makes the player feel like the artists are trying to hide something worse underneath all that blur.

Audio

The audio experience is mediocre. The sound effects are dull. Gunfire lacks any and all impact, almost bordering on sounding like a toy gun from the local dollar store. The music is good but the track list is extremely limited, so players will hear the same handful of tracks in the two to four hours it takes to beat the game. Finally, the voice acting is rough. Most of the actors are weak, but the actor who plays Jay does a fantastic job. Unfortunately, the main character Nora is among the worst due to her awkward almost monotonous delivery.

Overall

Everreach: Project Eden is the type of game that may have looked good on paper, but the execution is painfully flawed. The story feels like it’s seen the cutting block too many times to count. The gameplay is dull. The visual style is poorly thought out, and the audio experience is lukewarm at best. It’s current state makes me wonder if Everreach was a victim of overambition or was simply a poorly thought out game to start. We may never know the answer, but at least you know enough to just avoid this game.

The Holidays Arrive in World of Warships: Legends

The Holidays Arrive in World of Warships: Legends

The Last Battleship Campaign begins, the Yamato arrives, and High-Tier gameplay is improved!

December 20 – World of Warships: Legends is celebrating the Holidays with massive events! Players can participate in the Last Battleship campaign to earn the Jean Bart, build and command the mighty Yamato, and experience better battles through a second wave of player-driven changes. With lots of holiday presents, events, giveaways, and sales, there’s plenty to do in World of Warships: Legends this Holiday season.

The Last Battleship campaign has started and will continue until the next update. Players can earn the last battleship ever completed—Jean Bart. The historical Jean Bart was completed and entered service in 1955, almost 10 years after HMS Vanguard. Though originally a 1936 design, Jean Bart was redesigned with experience from World War II and her sister ship Richelieu. In-game, she is all about speed. Equipped with an Engine Boost and a Main Battery Reload Booster, Jean Bart can flank and unleash devastation on a whim. Players who complete the Last Battleship campaign with Admiralty Backing will receive the Jean Bart as the final reward. On the way through the Last Battleship campaign, players will earn rewards, equipment, and the special Santa Containers which have a chance to drop a premium ship.

At last, the legendary Yamato will appear in World of Warships: Legends. Any player that completes the Giant of the Sea missions can try out the Yamato starting on December 30th. Yamato is the first Legendary Tier ship in the game and is the most powerful ship in the game, bar none. She is nearly unstoppable thanks to her immense 460 mm guns and best-in-class survivability. In history, the Yamato was the largest and most powerful battleship ever built, and she retains that spot in World of Warships: Legends. Players won’t want to miss the chance to helm the Yamato. She will only be available during the Yamato event and will disappear afterwards for further tuning. Think of the event as an extended test drive!

There is also a special currency that can be obtained from both events—Sakura Coins. If players acquire enough of these Sakura coins by completing missions, opening Super Santa Containers, and taking the Yamato into battle they will have the opportunity to buy two premium destroyers, the Tier VI Asashio and the Tier III G-101. In order to get Asashio, players will need to open a few Super Santa Containers, which are available through the campaign and the store. There are also massive New Years sales to help players kick off 2020 with a bang.

In addition, there has been several balance changes to improve high-tier battles. Most Tier VII cruisers received improved survivability, and several Tier VI and VII ships were changed based on their performance in battle. High-tier map spawn locations were also adjusted to allow for more tactical flexibility in battle, thanks to player feedback. World of Warships: Legends has seen good progress throughout 2019. The game now has 5 main nations with 13 lines of ships to progress through, which is almost double the amount of ships that were available at launch. The roster of legendary commanders keeps growing as well, with over 35 represented. World of Warships: Legends is set to bring even more nations, ships, and commanders to the game in 2020!
