Gal*Gun Returns Review

Gal*Gun Returns

Developer: Inti Creates
Publisher: PQube
Platforms: Switch (Reviewed), PC
Release Date: February 12, 2021
Price: $49.99 – Available Here

Overview

A decade ago when news came out about a rail shooter that involved high school girls screaming in joy as players shoot them with pheromones and zoom in on their bodies few would have thought that the series would ever actually make it to the West. For the most part, they were right as the original game was never released in the West but low and behold, the sequels and even a VR version were eventually released many years later. Now in celebration of the ten year anniversary for the series Gal*Gun has been remastered as Gal*Gun Returns and released with nearly every piece of DLC that was released for the original. So now that the game that started it all has finally closed the gap, is it worth your time?

Story

An Angel Trainee by the name of Patako has one task left to properly graduate and become a full fledged angel, help a human fall in love with the help of a Cupid Arrow. She sets her sights on Tenzou Motesugi, a high school boy, only to accidentally set her crossbow on overload and blast him with sixteen Cupid Arrows making him completely irresistible to nearly every female that sets their eyes on him. This blessing quickly turns out to be a curse as Patako informs Tenzou that this newfound charisma only lasts a day and once it wears off every girl, even female animals, will hate him for the rest of his life.

As such, Tenzou only has the rest of the day to try and confess his love to one of four heroines that he is already somewhat close to. Only problem is, these girls are the few that happen to be resistant to Tenzou’s charms as each of them appear to have their minds elsewhere or have bigger problems than someone trying to find love. As such, players will need to make their choice of character to pursue and find themselves locked into that route as they run through the game, interacting with the girl through various dialogue choices and taking part in a number of different styled shooting games in an effort to try and woo their chosen heroine.

The characters in Gal*Gun Returns are rather straightforward in nature and many longtime fans of anime or any of the standard tropes will know what to expect when it comes to most of the character developments that take place but the interactions between Tenzou and the girls are still rather enjoyable despite their predictability. It is also worth noting that every girl has more than one ending and players will need to try harder than usual to obtain a “True End.”

Once players obtain a proper true ending they will unlock an additional story mode that serves as an epilogue of sorts called Doki Doki Carnival. This sees Tenzou dealing with the fallout of his post-admiration school, encountering another angel, and trying to hold onto the girl he has fallen in love with which will vary depending on the True Endings that the player has obtained. Doki Doki Carnival works well as quite replayable post-game content that also gives the regular girls of the school some personality and time to shine, even if it is still kept to a minimum. The standard story routes and epilogues do provide quite a bit of content but it is a bit unfortunate that it pales in comparison to the story content provided in the sequels.

Gameplay

With Tenzou drawing the attention of every girl in school, including a few members of the teaching staff, he has to defend himself against the waves of girls by using his “pheromone shot” to give them euphoria and put them temporarily out of commission. Every girl can take a few shots before going down though players can try to aim for a “sweet spot” for an instant takedown with each girl in the school having a different location on their body that will result in the ecstasy shot. This allows for some interesting instances where players can begin to recognize which girls can easily be taken down first in a wave since every character appears quite frequently given how long an average run through a story route can be.

Girls can damage Tenzou’s willpower by confessing their love to him up close with a letter, something which is far more limited compared to later games, and shouting confessions from a distance where their words can be shot out of the sky. If the player ends up losing all of their motivation gauge then he will suffer defeat and end up with the girl that managed to deal the finishing blow. Thankfully Tenzou has the ability to recover health whenever he uses “Doki Doki Mode” on a girl. Everytime a girl is defeated the player will fill up a heart meter that can be built up to four times and trigger the aforementioned mode. Here players will take their target into a pink world where they will target various parts of a girl’s body to make them explode with happiness and then take down every other girl on screen all while refilling Tenzou’s health.

Outside of the standard rail shooting gameplay players will also encounter various “boss” stages that involve either taking on the heroine of their choice or completing a mission objective alongside a character. These range from helping change boos to cheers at a concert, shooting metal balls out of the air, breaking a cage loose from a helicopter, and more. These help change things up from time to time and keep things fresh and even the Doki Doki Mode is expanded upon a bit more in the Carnival section of the game as players will need to manage to take down up to six girls at a time while limiting their meter usage to properly succeed. None of this is exceptionally difficult but one thing that may throw some players off a bit is the stat system.

Anytime Doki Doki Mode is used on a character Tenzou’s base stats; Intelligence, Athleticism, Style, and Lewdness will change depending on the girl that they used it on. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if it weren’t for the fact that each of the four main heroines have different preferences and players will need to make sure they keep their stat values in line or risk missing out on a True Ending even if they made all the correct dialogue choices. Considering players are rewarded with information about the background characters and even access to them in the gallery the more each character is targeted, it is a bit counterintuitive at times.

It is also worth noting that for longtime fans of the Gal*Gun series, this is easily the tamest game in the franchise so far. Perhaps the developers were unsure what they could get away with originally and then took things further from there but things such as seeing through clothing while zoomed in or vacuuming off their uniforms are no longer a thing and the most players will generally see are glimpses of underwear when targeting a character in Doki Doki Mode or when they fall in standard gameplay.

Visuals & Audio

While it may not be as varied as its sequels or quite as impressive looking, it is clear to see that the developers have done their best to improve the graphics from the original release and while the stages are fairly simplistic in nature a lot of attention has been given to the character models. The main heroines are all given solid designs and look great while all of the standard students have unique looks to them, allowing players to easily recognize who they may need to target. It is worth noting that thanks to this version of the game including all of the DLC players will be able to change the main heroines into a few different costumes and alter the standard characters’ uniforms, gym clothes, and swimsuits to vary things up quite a bit, especially since some of these outfits are more varied for each character.

The game features only the original Japanese voice work but it is nice to note that the entire game is voiced with every character given proper subtitles, even during Doki Doki Mode/Carnival. As for the soundtrack, the game features a re-recorded version of the previous opening theme and a number of new pieces of background music. Those playing through Aoi’s route will also find some rather enjoyable vocals mixed into the music during certain stages as well.

Overall

By going back to the beginning Gal*Gun Returns may be simpler than its sequels and doesn’t take its fanservice quite as far but it is still a solid rail shooter that offers tons of unlockable content, multiple routes to enjoy with enough variations to keep things feeling relatively fresh, and plenty of fanservice to still enjoy. This results in a game that remains very enjoyable but perhaps not the first stop newcomers should take when it comes entering the Gal*Gun series.

VZR Model One Headset for Audiophile Gamers Makes Waves Q2 2021

Debut Product by Former Apple Lead Audio Engineer’s New Company

SEATTLE — 8 Feb. 2021 — VZR™, a new audio products company founded by Apple’s former lead acoustics engineer, Vic Tiscareno, and veterans of the video game and audio industries, today reveals the VZR Model One audiophile gaming headset, with preorders and shipments beginning in Q2 2021. Visitors to the VZR website can sign up now to be the first to know when pre-orders begin.

The VZR Model One delivers natural, expansive, audiophile-quality sound and is particularly adept at accurately rendering immersive 3-dimensional soundscapes. Every component in the VZR Model One has been optimized to deliver class-besting performance and the Model One features the debut of a ground-breaking, proprietary and patented innovation called CrossWaveTM that truly sets it apart from competitors and more expensive audiophile headphones.

Commercially available for the first time in the VZR Model One, CrossWaveTM is a passive acoustic lens technology that selectively and strategically reshapes audio waves to emulate the way one would perceive the sound in real life without headphones, resulting in improved separation, openness and accurate 3D spatial positioning – all without digitally altering the audio source.

Competitive players will benefit from the more accurate, realistic positional audio, with the potential for improved in-game performance through superior spatial awareness and a greater ability to pinpoint small but crucial details like footsteps and gunshots. Proprietary VZR testing in virtual reality applications shows that the VZR Model One enabled subjects to determine the location of positional sounds more quickly than with competing gaming and audiophile headsets.

Even for those who play immersive single-player games or want a headphone that will let them rediscover their favorite music, the VZR Model One performs beautifully. VZR designed the headset to deliver the fidelity and detail of a studio reference speaker system alongside the warmth and openness of open-backed audiophile headphones – all in an affordable headset that offers best-in-class performance no matter how it is used.

The VZR Model One utilizes modular, high-quality, custom-sourced components, with standard 3.5mm connections for maximum compatibility and minimum latency. The detachable boom mic features a patent-pending noise-canceling design that ensures clear communication. The included headphone cable comes equipped with an inline microphone that activates when the boom is detached, and a mute switch.

Experts in gaming and audio tested the VZR Model One during its several years of development and endorse it, including Ed Lima, the BAFTA-nominated sound designer known for his work on Doom 3 and Borderlands, GRAMMY-winning musician and producer Anthony Ray, better known as Sir Mix-a-Lot, and many more prominent figures in their respective industries.

“We meticulously designed everything about the VZR Model One, using years of research, decades of experience, and feedback from audio experts to refine the headset to maximize its performance,” said Vic Tiscareno, Founder, VZR. “From the drivers to the cable and earpads, we’re not cutting any corners to make the perfect headphones for gamers, audiophiles, and anyone who demands great audio.”

The VZR Model One will be available for preorder from VZR’s official website for $349 in Q2 2021. For more information on VZR and to sign up to get notified when preorders go live, visit the official website and follow VZR on Twitter

ABOUT CLEVER BEANS

Manchester-based Clever Beans was formed in 2010 by managing directors, Martin Turton and Andrew Newton. Having worked together in AAA games development for many years, they decided to ‘go indie’ and pursue their dream of making fun games everyone can enjoy. Working exclusively with Sony as a second party studio, they completed the PlayStation exclusive game, When Vikings Attack in 2012. The first game to ever support Cross Platform play between PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita, it was built using their own in-house engine, lovingly known as “Beans Tech”. Clever Beans has expanded with several industry veterans (and some n00bs) joining its ranks, as they continue to expand into a crack games development ninja squad. Since When Vikings Attack, it has mostly working on many uber-super-secret projects. In Summer 2017, Clever Beans released the PlayStation exclusive title “Wipeout – Omega Collection” for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. Visit www.CleverBeans.co.uk for more information.

300% EXP EVENT NOW LIVE IN A3: STILL ALIVE AS PART OF MAJOR UPDATE THAT INTRODUCES NEW “SOMIUS” REGION FOR PLAYERS

Items valued up to $150 given to Players, along with Launch of Offline Battle ‘ALIVE MODE’ for Continuous Player Growth, Maximum Level Increases, and Upcoming Server Merges

LOS ANGELES – FEB. 8, 2021 – Netmarble’s latest update for its popular Dark Fantasy Open World MMORPG A3: STILL ALIVE officially introduces the previously-teased “Somius” region that is now open for Warriors to explore and conquer, alongside various in-game events and enhancements that are available for players .

The new Somius region introduces new quests, new territories for players to explore, and the first two floors of a new Corrupt Aselcan Ruins dungeon to conquer. To prepare for the Somius region, the maximum player level has increased to 140 and new level 130-140 equipment has been added to the game.

A new Offline Auto Battle – ALIVE MODE is also now live. Based on A3: STILL ALIVE’s unique AI Battle feature, players can use detailed strategy to hunt and continue the excitement of growing their characters’ strength even while they are offline. ALIVE MODE offers major alerts – including item achievements, deaths, lack of supporting items and full inventory – to keep players updated on their character’s status. ALIVE MODE also supports active gameplay timings that stand out from other auto battle modes that only feature basic auto-play and reward collecting.

In newly opened servers, players will be given a 3x Experience Boost, and can participate in a Bonus Time event. Various rewards, including up to 3x Heroic 6★ Soul Linkers, a Legendary 8★ Conversion Ticket, and a Heroic Accessory Chest, will be provided via the Somius Special Event, Adrasil’s Trial Ranking Event, and a new Guild Event.

To celebrate this major update, every player will be given an assortment of in-game items valued at $150 by inputting the coupon code ‘POWERUPA3’ so that they can continue enjoying A3: STILL ALIVE.

Other changes made to the game include:

  • Apostle, Skill, and Guild maximum levels have increased to 60, 40, and 10 respectively, with one passive skill added upon reaching the player level of 140
  • Equipment / Accessory Awaken Systems are added, so players can create Legendary★ Set Equipment from Legendary★ Equipment and Set Accessories for Ancient Accessories
  • A new Raid, Twilight Cemetery, is now open for high-level Warriors. Warriors with Level 125 can enter Normal difficulty. Level 135 and higher warriors can enjoy Nightmare difficulty
  • A3: STILL ALIVE’s original servers will merge into 5~7 new servers that are now open for each four regions
  • Legendary Soul Linker Switch system allows a 7-Star Legendary Soul Linker now to be switched for a Level 1 Soul Linker of the same type with in-game currency

Today’s update also introduces various events, including:

  • Somius Special Event (Feb. 4~18)
    • In addition to 14 Day Missions and a Raid EXP Bonus Time event, players entering the new servers will also see a 300% boost in earned experience, along with those who enter the Metium area.
    • Returning users will also enjoy a 28-Day Daily Check-In Event, along with a separate 7-Day Mission event
  • Server Merge Event (Feb. 4~18)
    • Players may take pictures with as many guild members as possible, and share the picture to Facebook. The guild with the most liked comments will be rewarded 500x Blue Diamonds for every Member.

Set in an apocalyptic fantasy world of swords and sorcery, A3: STILL ALIVE is a cross-genre mobile experience that pairs the enormous and living worlds of Open-World RPGs with the extreme combat of Battle Royale. Players must be vigilant in an always-open Player vs. Player (PvP) environment as they fight against enemies with intense hack & slash combat and prove their mettle in a variety of PvP and Player vs. Environment (PvE) modes. A3: STILL ALIVE is beautifully rendered with splendid console-quality 3D graphics that are brought to life thanks to the outstanding optimization of the Unity Engine.

A3: STILL ALIVE is now available as a free digital download (with in-app purchases) on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, in 172 countries around the world.
