Volcanoids offers a new twist on the long running and highly popular open world survival sandbox genre. Players are on a volcanic island that explodes every 25 minutes, completely destroying everything above ground. To survive, players live and work out of a mobile drill ship that will allow them to travel around the island and hide during the explosions.

The game has been on Steam Early Access for a little over a year now. We recently checked out the game as the developers just released a major update overhauling the combat.

While Volcanoids is advertised as a survival title, the game is more focused on the crafting and exploration elements. Traditional survival mechanics like hunger and thirst have been dropped in favour of the 25-minute explosion timer. The consequence of ignoring the timer is punishing. Any items, players, and mobile drill ships left above ground are obliterated. Time and risk management are big parts of Volcanoids’ gameplay, especially when playing alone. Mid to high tier crafting must be done while the drill ship is deployed above ground and vulnerable to attack, but players are under time pressure to explore to gather resources before the explosion. It’s a tense balance, but an entertaining one.

The crafting system is solid. The bulk of the crafting must be done on the drill ship using automated machines as workbenches can only output basic items. Crafting is tied with base management, as the drill ship has limited power and slots for modules needed for production, research, defense, refineries, and storage. The tech tree doesn’t offer any noteworthy innovation, but it is solid none the less. The pacing is excellent as it never increases exponentially just to extend the length of the game. Currently, it offers three tiers, with each tier unlocking new items. I really like how the tech tree rarely makes old items obsolete, but either carves out a niche for the item or offers upgrades like better ammunition.

The level design is decent so far. Volcanoids offers a mix of a 2D underworld, a 3D overworld, and several 3D underground caves. The 2D underworld connects all the 3D maps together and provides some resource gathering opportunities while players wait out the volcano explosion. The 3D overworld is on the rougher side right now. There are a lot of reused assets which make areas blend together after several hours. The caves break up the gameplay, but they too tend to look the same after a while. The one saving grace is how the level’s resources are reset with each volcano explosion. It is a simple solution to the age old problem of exhausted resources that plagues many open world survival sandbox games.

Volcanoids’ combat is in a decent place right now. Bots are found in towns and endlessly spawn from hostile drill ships. Bots spawning from ships tend to be quite aggressive, patrolling around and attacking the player’s ship once enough of them are gathered. They aren’t smart, but they are incredibly relentless.

The gunplay feels good. The developers have opted to use a smaller number of guns, but a large variety of ammunition to keep older weapons relevant and give weapons a little extra flexibility. The projectile based weapon system can make firefights chaotic, but the mobility heavy combat feels good. The weapon balance is still a work in progress though. The submachine guns feel a touch underpowered still considering their material cost. The grenades on the other hand are wildly overpowered considering their cheap material cost and how early players get access to them. I found carrying thirty or more grenades and relying on them almost exclusively when attacking an enemy drill ship was one of the most reliable tactics.

Volcanoids is generally not a difficult game to learn. The initial tutorial is very thorough, except for a few notable exceptions. The very first explosion timer is a bit short. There is barely enough time to get everything done if players understand the information perfectly. Tacking on an extra three to five minutes and providing clearer indicators on how to get the drill ship underground would be helpful. Second, the tutorial does not make it clear enough that sending the drill ship underground while players explore is the default tactic. This important bit of information should not be buried in the in-game manual. The in-game manual on the other hand is incredibly extensive. My only complaint is I would have preferred to see slightly more detailed information about turret ranges, as the game currently offers very vague descriptors instead of actual numbers.

The visual presentation is excellent so far. The game offers a brighter take on Steampunk. Hopefully more bot designs will be introduced in the future, as they generally look alike except for colouration. Without a doubt, the best visual effect in the game right now is the transition between the ash covered wasteland just after an explosion to the lush and vibrant landscape. The change is so subtle that it’s easily ignored, but it is always a pleasure to stop and admire the landscape and realize how much it had changed.

The audio needs some work. The music is decent, but the sound effects have some issues. The sound effects sound okay, but the sound effects related to the underground vehicle have an odd popping noise.

Volcanoids is wading into the crowded open world survival sandbox space with a unique take on the genre. Halfway into their planned two year early access, Volcanoids is in a good spot. It is already in an enjoyable, albeit short, state. Besides more content, most of the areas in need of attention are balancing and visual variety. The game is already worth considering for those willing to take a risk on an Early Access title. For those who prefer to wait, Volcanoids likely has a bright future ahead of it.

  • Size Matters: Experience the chaos of epic medieval battlefields, charge forth to the frontlines of battle, and experience true mass-scale combat supporting up to 64-players designed to capture the intensity and scope of “The Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones.
  • Master Blade, Bow, or… Chicken: Your arsenal expands with the new subclass system that provides more variety than ever before. Four base classes expand to 12 subclasses, including the Skirmisher, a melee/ranged hybrid – to the Poleman, a fighter who keeps foes at bay with long-distance melee.
  • The World is Your Weapon: Own the field with a variety of heavy siege engines including Ballistae, Catapults, Trebuchet, Battering Rams, Mantlets, Spike Traps, Ladders and more. Utilize traps to defend, including spikes, bear traps, and more. You can even deal damage with a smorgasbord of “found items” on the battlefield. Try downing a cup of mead and deal a killing blow with the empty chalice or finish off a foe by smashing him in the face with a flaming chicken!
  • New Map – The Siege of Rudhelm: In the first public hands-on of Chivalry 2 since PAX East 2020, experience the return of the fan-favorite Team Objective mode and join attacking or defending teams as 64-players vie for control of a well-fortified castle in a never-before-seen map.
  • Many Modes: In addition to Team Objective mode, closed beta participants can also sharpen their skills in a variety of other modes, including Team Deathmatch and Free-for-All.

Chivalry 2 is a multiplayer first-person slasher inspired by epic medieval movie battles. Players are thrust into the action of every iconic moment of the era –from clashing swords, to storms of flaming arrows, sprawling castle sieges, and more. Dominate massive battlefields while catapults tear the earth apart as players lay siege to castles, set fire to villages, and slaughter filthy peasants in the return of Team Objective maps.

Improving on the original genre-defining Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Chivalry 2 invites players to master the blade with an all-new and improved combat system that combines real-time strikes and a free-flowing combo system to speed up the action and let players become a whirlwind of steel on the battlefield. Created with the ability to fight multiple foes in mind, Chivalry 2’s combat mixes the best of both FPS and fighting game genres for an unmatched melee experience.

Valentine’s Day Celebrations in GTA Online: Triple Rewards in Till Death Do Us Part and Shotgun Wedding, Free Champagne, Themed Discounts, and More

Romance Is in the Air in GTA Online

Couple up and celebrate accordingly, with bonuses on Till Death Do Us Part and Shotgun Wedding, plus discounts on Valentine’s Day content, free champagne, and more.

Take a deep whiff of the air around Los Santos and you’re bound to catch notes of perfume mixed in with the usual air pollution, fumes, and gunpowder. GTA Online is celebrating Valentine’s Day this week with a range of discounts and bonuses to help you feel the love.

3X GTA$ and RP in Till Death Do Us Part
Till Death Do Us Part is a recipe for the ultimate GTA Online quadruple date. Four couples each have just one life between the two of them — if your partner dies, you die. Remember: codependence is dramatic and romantic. Cuddling up is its own reward here, too: players regenerate health by staying close to one another. Get comfortable and destroy any couple that comes too close.

Jump straight into Till Death Do Us Part via the boot menu or by hitting PAUSE > ONLINE > JOBS > PLAY JOB > ROCKSTAR CREATED > ADVERSARY MODE.

3X GTA$ and RP in Shotgun Wedding
A cozy little chapel tucked into the beachside town of Paleto Bay is the perfect venue for a quiet ceremony — or a cacophony of close-quarters combat and chaos. Win or lose, you’re walking away from Shotgun Wedding with triple the usual GTA$ and RP.

Shotgun Wedding can be launched by pressing PAUSE > ONLINE > JOBS > PLAY JOB > ROCKSTAR CREATED > DEATHMATCHES.

2X GTA$ and RP on DJ Missions
Clubbers and ravers are always making requests of the DJ; it’s only right we hear them out every once in a while and indulge their whims. Keep an eye out for texts from English Dave or Tom Connors, as they’ll need help keeping Moodymann, Keinemusik, and Palms Trax comfortable. Whether it’s charged crystals, pizza, or prized personal belongings, bring them back swiftly and you’ll be rewarded with invaluable industry clout, plus an additional 2X GTA$ and RP.

Free Champagne at Nightclubs
You and Mr. Connors will be happy to learn that all Nightclubs in Los Santos, including The Music Locker, are offering free champagne to all guests this week. Nothing keeps the romance alive quite like a bit of bubbly on the house. Go on, pop some Blêuter’d and spray it all over the place.

Play to Unlock: The Buckingham Luxe Tee
Should you manage to complete the Cayo Perico Heist and escape in one piece (or any other Heist Finale, for that matter), you’ll receive the Buckingham Luxe Tee, free of charge, as a reward.

On the Podium This Week: Vapid Dominator GTX
Swing by the lobby of The Diamond Casino & Resort to give the Lucky Wheel its daily spin and walk away with GTA$, RP, clothing, mystery items, and more. This week’s top prize on the podium is the Vapid Dominator GTX, a muscle car that might as well run on uncut toxic masculinity.

Discounts
Partners looking to make a special occasion out of this week can take a blanket 30% off all Valentine’s Day-related content, such as the Gusenberg Sweeper and all Valentine’s Day attire at clothing stores.

If you’ve enjoyed the vibes at The Music Locker, but you’re interested in turning a profit of your own in the nightlife space, you can take advantage of 40% off all Nightclub properties plus 30% off their upgrades and renovations:

40% off all Nightclubs

30% off Nightclub Upgrades & Renovations

Borderlands 3 – Broken Hearts Day Event is now Live

Borderlands® 3’s Broken Hearts Day Event Begins; Special Limited-Time Discounts on Select Digital Editions Continue

Score themed loot for your Vault Hunters during the Broken Hearts Day seasonal in-game event from now until February 25

Borderlands® 3’s Broken Hearts Day seasonal event* is back for the second year running! Mysterious floating hearts are swirling around lovesick enemies across the Borderlands. Aboard Sanctuary III, your Saurian pal Maurice—sensing an opportunity to further his studies of our species’ courting rituals—needs assistance. As you travel around the galaxy, he’d like you to break any hearts you see by shooting them down. Simple!

Hearts aren’t all the same, of course, and during this event, there are six distinct ways they can break. Some will fall to the ground with a fiery explosion, while others will drop loot, regenerate your health, or briefly turn nearby enemies into allies. Word has it there are even rare hearts that will spawn groups of ghosts from the Bloody Harvest, affording you an off-season opportunity to score some spooky loot.

Maurice places an equal value on all the various heart types and will keep track of how many you’ve broken. Obliterate enough hearts, and he’ll mail new Broken Hearts Day rewards for your troubles:

  • 10 – “ECHOcardiogram” ECHO Skin;
  • 25 – “Cosmic Romance” Weapon Trinket;
  • 50 – “Terminal Polyaimorous” Legendary Maliwan SMG;
  • 75 – “Heartbreaker” Vault Hunter Skin;
  • 100 – “Wedding Invitation” Legendary Jakobs Sniper Rifle.

Vault Hunters that helped the sentient Saurian last year will notice that this year’s Broken Hearts Day event includes recoloured ECHO Skin, Weapon Trinket, and Vault Hunter Skin cosmetic rewards. It also brings back last year’s Legendary guns— which can only be obtained during this event— at the current level cap of 65.

This seasonal event has now begun, and you have two weeks to assist Maurice before the event ends on Thursday, February 25. If you don’t want to take part in the Broken Hearts Day event or simply want to play Borderlands 3 without breaking hearts for a while, you can opt out from the main menu. Note that when you join an online game, the host player’s setting will determine whether or not the event is active.

But that’s not all! The latest episode of The Borderlands Show was packed with exciting updates and announcements, including news on the upcoming Director’s Cut* add-on for Borderlands 3, the impending re-release of award-winning adventure title Tales from the Borderlands®, and the reveal of the Disciples of the Vault premium cosmetic packs coming soon to Season Pass 2*. UnderMine Finds Fortune Today on Nintendo Switch

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – 11 Feb 2021 – UnderMine, the action-adventure roguelike brimming with secrets from developer Thorium Entertainment, blasts open secret passages today on Nintendo Switch after more than 600,000 miners enjoyed the game on Steam and via Xbox Game Pass.

Step into the shoes of an unlucky adventurer and charge through a dangerous system of mines and caverns filled with monstrous creatures, puzzling challenges, and heavenly rewards. Fight carefully, for reckless peasants may find themselves meeting an early grave. Death is not the end, as the next poor potential hero receives some of the fallen worker’s gold and can purchase permanent upgrades or get a financial leg up on their run.

Demolition experience is a plus; use bombs as weapons and tools to locate secret passages containing hidden loot or potential allies. If the hired hand can survive against the many malicious monsters in each level, they then have the chance to square off against the massive, room-filling bosses that guard more spoils.

Abilities granted from relics, magical potions, and treasure add a layer of strategy and planning for the mindful adventurer. Make use of these wondrous items, enhancing the current run’s profit margin. Collect all the gold possible to make the next run easier, or purchase equipment and upgrades aiding the current descent.

Veteran miners can test their mettle in the Othermine, a hardcore roguelike experience; start each descent with no upgrades for maximum replayability. Thorium will dive even further into the UnderMine with post-launch updatesin the coming months for all platforms with new zones, bosses, and items.

“We put a lot of work into the Switch version of UnderMine, making sure it runs perfectly at 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked mode,” said Derek Johnson, Founder, Thorium Entertainment. “If it’s your first time delving into the mines or if you’re picking it up to play it on the go, UnderMine on the Switch is the perfect way to play.”

UnderMine is available now on Nintendo Switch for $19.99. UnderMine supports English, French, German, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian language text.

For more information, please visit UnderMine’s official website, check out the game on Twitter and Instagram, join the official Discord server, and follow Thorium on YouTube and Twitch.

Sydney, Australia, February 12th,  2021Today, 1C Entertainment and Koch Media announced that King’s Bounty II, the upcoming successor of the critically acclaimed unique turn-based tactical role-playing King’s Bounty series, will be released on August 24, 2021 for PlayStation® 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The original launch date in March 2021 was revised to ensure the best experience for players when the game comes out.

“As a team, we had to make the difficult decision to move King’s Bounty2’s release to a later point in 2021 to ensure the team has adequate time to deliver a King’s Bounty best possible experience, “ said Nikolay Baryshnikov, CEO of 1C Entertainment.

“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, polishing, and postponing launch will give us the precious months to balancing phase, much needed for such important project for us, with its ambitious, open world, its complex narrative, deep Turn-Based Tactical and RPG mechanics, “ said Denis Maltzev, King’s Bounty II producer. “Seeing the love and passion you, as our fans, put behind this project, we are grateful for all your support and ask you for a little more patience with us. We’re hoping that this won’t be a long delay and please make sure to keep an eye on our channels to receive all upcoming updates on the game as we get closer to the new release date.“

Players could see a first glimpse of the game at the Epic Games Showcase and LUDI Awards on February 11, 2021. More information about the game will be shared at a later stage.

About King’s Bounty 2

Offering a fresh take on the acclaimed fantasy series, King’s Bounty 2 expands upon its tactical turn-based battles to offer players a truly immersive RPG experience that adds weight to their every decision, whether leading an army into battle against unliving horrors, or building relations with local townsfolk. Experience a rich world that blends realism and fantasy, filled with compelling stories, memorable characters and moral choices aplenty!

Players take on the role of one of three heroes – each a personality with their own background – and experience a non-linear adventure in an open and vibrant fantasy world. Split into two distinct phases, players traverse the realm from a third-person perspective, picking up quests, exploring the wilderness, and getting to know the people they meet. When conflict arises, however, the perspective shifts to tactical, turn-based combat. Players must then make smart use of their units as they fight to win.
