Overview

Wrestling games have been in a rut for a while now. With the historic decline of the 2K franchise, it’t really been up to smaller titles such as Fire Pro and Wrestling Empire to deliver a glimpse of hope for the genre, and one could say they have filled the empty space in the market with some entertaining romps. RetroMania Wrestling is the latest to throw its hat in the ring, acting as the official sequel to WWF Wrestlefest, which is now right at thirty years old. Thirty years is a long time, so is this offering worthy of your attention, or is it a bit too late to bring out this rivival? Let’s find out.

Story

The story mode in RetroMania Wrestling is something. Players start out as Johnny Retro, which you may know as WWE’s own John Morrison. Retro is on a comeback from an injury, and basically works through bookings in a branching path narrative. Storylines branch through progression and choice, and though short, most will find this little mode to be a lot of fun. Sure, it isn’t exactly gripping in terms of writing, but RetroMania wears its indie booking heart on its sleeve, and managed to pick a roster of stars that are social media all-stars, with Stevie Richards, Matt Cardona, and a good selection of people who I was simply delighted in seeing get time to shine. The narrative is a good time, packed full of humor. Even though most will not know everyone in the roster if they don’t follow this scene, there is enough personality and charm to warrant several playthroughs overall.

Gameplay

The gameplay was what I was a bit concerned about going into RetroManiaWrestlefest is a big name to live up to, and thankfully, Retrosoft Studios have made a simplistic, yet solid system that feels much like its predecessor. The grappling system basically works a bit like Fire Pro, where you have stages of grapples you can perform based on the strength of your opponent. The more offense you do, the quicker you build up your momentum – allowing execution of medium and heavy attacks. Add in your weapons, stipulations, and general wrestling fare, and you have a polished set of mechanics that flow quite nicely, once one is able to learn the basics.

During my first match I did have a bit of a stall with the controls as the timing is a bit tricky to master, but in just a few matches, it all became relatively easy to perform just about anything. Submissions, pins, and so on rely on a button-mashing competition to execute effective techniques, and even though some may scoff at that, I felt it was such a relief not to be thrown into a maddening mini-game that killed the pace of the fight (2K, that jab was for you). RetroMania’s gameplay takes things back to basics, and even though it doesn’t have the most maneuvers or match types, it does work well within its own walls, allowing those wanting an authentic experience to get some satisfaction without some silly gimmick tied in that hinders combat.

Story mode is fine for the story side of things, but the star of the game in my opinion comes with the “10 Pounds of Gold” mode. This works much like any other tournament, but puts the NWA title on the line and has a sense of importance, offering a huge payoff to those who are willing to make the trek. There is also an offline versus mode as well as a ton of easter eggs buried within, but I do think that it comes as a missed opportunity to not have online play, considering that this game feels like it would be made for that. Due to the lack of creation tools and a short roster, RetroMania’s biggest drawback is that it stands as a bit of a novelty experience rather than a game you can sink hundreds of hours in. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that mindset, but the current market of wrestling titles simply has more content available at launch, and the lack of it here in such a polished romp will surely leave fans of the genre hungry for more in a short time.

Visuals

The 16-bit pixel art in RetroMania is phenomenal. Colors are bright and crisp, models are well detailed, and animations add in a ton of charm and life with little details such as facial expressions and taunts that bring the larger-than-life personalities out of each one of the 16 stars within. You can tell by the design that this game was made by a team that cared, and that love is sewn into so many places that nothing feels or looks underdone or generic. Even the little picture boxes that pop up during rumbles add a lot of depth to the experience, with characters doing their little entrance bits as they come to the ring, without disturbing gameplay due to the clever placement.

Audio

The music is also fantastic. Fans may not know every little theme song, but there is definitely a lot of nostalgia within the soundtrack. The smooth beats are also joined with impressive voice-overs, with in-game commentary (that actually is impressive) and ring announcing, which actually surprised me as I can’t tell you the last time I have seen a 2D wrestling game with competent play by play. The audio is just a welcome addition to all of the detail RetroMania already offers, creating a distinct experience for any player with its quality and charm.

Overall

RetroMania Wrestling is a fun throwback with a lot of heart. Sure, it could have done more or checked more boxes in terms of additional content, but what it does do it does well, and novelty or not you will walk away with a smile due to how much fun it can offer in a quick session. Wrestling games are not what they used to be, and the point of RetroMania seems to be to give the fans just that, an experience that is true to the foundation of the genre, with a lot of quirk, atmosphere, and personality that could easily turn into a franchise with enough support.

Help dogs find their forever homes in the virtual world and real-life alike with To the Rescue!. This sim follows the journey of one dog lover’s mission to open a shelter, care for canines, and unite man’s best friend with loving new families. Elixir – world first bitcoin NFT gaming market place

NEW PUBLISHING PLATFORM FOR BITCOIN NFT-COMPATIBLE GAMES LAUNCHES LATER THIS YEAR

Alicante, Spain, April 30, 2021 – Satoshi’s Games has announced that the long-awaited, first-ever NFT marketplace for games based on Bitcoin, Elixir, is now available. The marketplace utilizes the latest technology from the Liquid sidechain, Lightning Network, IPFS and L-SAT to replicate the behavior of NFTs and crypto-collectibles through Bitcoin.

Elixir is live ahead of the launch of a dedicated publishing platform for NFT-compatible games due to the Light Nite community’s request for a system to trade the tokenized in-game gear they acquire from the battle royale third person shooter. The publishing platform will be available later this year. The NFT marketplace may be found at http://market.elixir.app.

Take a look at Elixir’s magic in motion with the trailer below:

“The NFTs in our titles aren’t just collectibles,” explains Carlos Roldan at Satoshi’s Games. “We want our players to have greater control and ownership of their in-game items while still being able to use them on the digital battlefield.”

Satoshi’s Games’ Light Nite allows players to collect bitcoin just to stack sats or to obtain in-game gear that’s been tokenized with Liquid (a Bitcoin sidechain). NFTs may be earned while playing, purchased or traded in the Elixir marketplace. Users can also withdraw NFTs to their own wallet if they prefer to custody them.

The Elixir marketplace will eventually become part of Satoshi’s Games’ greater Elixir publishing platform, due out later this year. The platform will allow any developer to publish games with features such as bitcoin Micro-Rewards and Asset Tokenization. These features have already been implemented in Light Nite, meaning fans of the title already have access to the marketplace.

The Call of Duty Endowment Announces #CODEMedicalHeroes Campaign to Raise $3 Million for Veteran Employment

In-Game Character and Content Pack Co-Designed by Decorated Army Combat Medic, with Net Proceeds Going towards Veteran Employment; Goal is to place 5,800 Veterans through Campaign

Activision Blizzard Donating $1 for Every Player Who Revives Five Teammates in Call of Duty®: Warzone

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – April 30, 2021 – In celebration of Military Appreciation Month, the Call of Duty Endowment today announced the #CODEMedicalHeroes campaign to honor veteran medics and hospital corpsmen and to bring attention to the difficulties that they face finding jobs in the civilian healthcare industry. Through a series of Call of Duty®: Warzone™ in-game activations, exclusive content packs, and partnerships beginning today and throughout the month of May, the #CODEMedicalHeroes campaign aims to raise a total of $3 million to fund veteran employment efforts, placing over 5,800 veterans into jobs.

The centerpiece of the campaign is the Call of Duty Endowment Battle Doc Pack, now available in both Call of Duty®: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone. All of Activision’s net proceeds for the pack will go to the Endowment. The pack features a brand-new Operator Skin created in partnership with Army Veteran Combat Medic Timothy Hobbs Jr., an avid Call of Duty player who the Endowment helped place into a high-quality job through our grantee Still Serving Veterans. Sergeant First Class Timothy Hobbs was deployed on four combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and on one humanitarian mission in Puerto Rico, after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

“The Call of Duty Endowment is dedicated to unlocking the value that veterans can bring to the civilian workforce,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “Unemployment and underemployment have often hit veterans hard, even more so during the ongoing pandemic, and we want to support our amazing partners who work tirelessly transitioning former service members into meaningful employment.”

“The #CODEMedicalHeroes campaign will reach a wide audience of Call of Duty players through in-game activations and a new content pack, all to raise awareness and honor our veteran medics and hospital corpsmen,” said Dan Goldenberg, Executive Director of the Call of Duty Endowment. “Veterans bring incredible value to the workforce, and we want to do our part to help find them high-quality jobs.”

#CODEMedicalHeroes will also honor medical servicemembers in-game through the Revival Challenge in Call of Duty: Warzone. From now until May 9, players who revive five people while playing Warzone will unlock a unique Call of Duty Endowment calling card. If one million players complete the challenge, a double-XP Day will be given to all Call of Duty: Warzone players. Additionally, Activision Blizzard will donate $1 to the Endowment for each player that completes the challenge, up to $1 million.

“There is a disconnect for transitioning medical servicemembers. Many highly qualified veterans are being left out of the hiring process because they lack the proper civilian certifications, but I hope we can change that,” said Timothy Hobbs Jr. “As a success story and a believer in the Call of Duty Endowment, I applaud the work the Endowment is doing for the medical servicemember community to help them address this growing issue.”

Pilot Company, one of the largest operators of travel centers in North America and a key supporter of the Endowment, continued to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to veteran employment by donating $100,000 in honor of Military Appreciation Month. Their contribution will fund the placement almost 200 veterans into high-quality jobs.

The Call of Duty Endowment has funded the placement of more than 81,000 veterans into high-quality employment since its inception and aims to place 100,000 veterans into meaningful jobs by 2024. The Endowment’s 2020 cost to place a veteran was $515, providing employment at about 1/6 the cost of US Department of Labor efforts.

Resident Evil Re:Verse Pushed to Summer 2021

It looks like Resident Evil Re:Verse is going to take a bit more time in development before it is ready as Capcom has announced that it will no longer be releasing on May 7th as a bonus multiplayer title bundled with Resident Evil Village and will instead be releasing separately sometime in summer 2021.

While Capcom has not given an exact reason as to why the multiplayer game that saw characters, monsters, and locations from all entries in the series combined into a third-person shooter was delayed, it is likely due to the recent open beta tests that the company has held over the past month leading up to release. It is worth noting that while this has been delayed, the core game Resident Evil Village is still set to be released as planned on May 7th.

Earth Defense Force 6 Debut Trailer Released

After announcing last year that a brand new Earth Defense Force is in the works Sandlot and D3 Publisher have released a debut trailer for Earth Defense Force 6 to give players a small sample of what the game will have to offer in the way of enemies and classes that players can use to take them out, though longtime fans will recognize most of the creepy crawlies that appear.

Currently Earth Defense Force 6 is set to be released sometime this year in Japan but at the moment the company has not announced what platforms it can be expected on, though it is worth noting that previous showings of the game have featured PlayStation branding.

PREPARE TO HUNKER DOWN | SIEGE SURVIVAL GLORIA VICTIS 18 MAY 2021 RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED

New screens, price and launch discount info also made available

Sydney, Australia – Friday 30 April 2021, 22:00 AEST: Koch Media and Black Eye Games have confirmed the launch date for Siege Survival: Gloria Victis – Tuesday 18 of May. The game will be available on Steam, Epic and GOG with a RRP of $35.95 AUD with a launch discount of 20% off for the first week.

The medieval survival management strategy game tells the story of how a humble band of civilians, trapped by a besieging army in the small keep of the city, attempts to keep the last defending troops equipped – and the survivors alive – as they wait for a desperately needed relief force to end their suffering. Build your base, craft supplies, scavenge the fallen city for resources and carefully manage your survivors to keep them alive and able to support the last remaining troops standing between you and the invading barbarians.

There’s also a recently updated, fully playable demo that allows users to experience the first seven days of the campaign available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1167140/Siege_Survival_Gloria_Victis/

There are three core elements to the game:

  • Crafting & resource management: You need better weapons, a roof over your head, hot food and all the other trappings that just existing entail; and the only way you’ll get these is if you and your team craft them. But resources are scarce and you’ll need to manage them wisely to make it through in one piece.
  • Scavenging: Venturing out from the safety of your keep, you have to explore the ransacked city at night to collect raw materials, abandoned goods and weapons that you need to survive and hold out long enough for the reinforcements to arrive. Unlock new routes to various districts of the city, recruit more survivors and avoid enemy soldiers patrolling at night. If you don’t make it back by dawn, you’re as good as dead.
  • Surviving the siege: Defending what’s left of your city are a few tired troops in dire need of arrows, weapons and armour; along with treatment for the wounded. You need to keep this squad supplied and supported in every way possible ahead of their battles every few days; otherwise the enemy will storm the keep. Although you don’t participate in the fighting directly, the fate of the city lies in your hands.

All this is woven into a grim narrative with numerous moral dilemmas, forcing the player to regularly make tough decisions as they scavenge the city of Edring and desperately try to save it and themselves from impending doom. Sustain the troops or keep the civilians alive? Only the player can decide.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis will be published on Koch Media’s Ravenscourt label: www.ravenscourt.games

3X GTA$ and RP on Motor Wars until June 2nd

Paradrop into a red-hot landing zone with nothing to your name but a pistol and survive by scavenging for weapons and vehicles and pulp anyone standing in your way. Motor Wars — that pulse-pounding dress rehearsal for an aerial invasion — is doling out 3X GTA$ and RP to all fearless competitors, all month long.

2X GTA$ and RP on Bunker Series

If you would rather fight it out in the halls of an underground lair or in the underbelly of Mt. Chiliad, be our guest: subterranean versions of Every Bullet Counts, Juggernaut, Slasher, Kill Quota and more are dishing out double GTA$ and RP to all comers as part of the Bunker Series.
