MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries – Legend of the Kestrel Lancers Expansion Ready to Deploy on Sept. 23 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation®4, and PlayStation®5

Developer Piranha Games to Introduce Melee Combat and Other Notable Series-First Features with Free Base Game Update

VVANCOUVER, British Columbia– Sept. 16, 2021 –Developer Piranha Games announced today, that a new MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries expansion, Legend of the Kestrel Lancers and major updates for the base game will release Sept. 23, 2021 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PS4™ system, PlayStation®5, Steam, GOG.com, and Epic Games Store. Both the expansion and update are packed with first-in-series features focused on bringing a fresh experience to longtime fans and provide an accessible entry point for new players.

The Legend of the Kestrel Lancers expansion departs from the sandbox structure seen in past campaigns and offers a more story-focused experience set during the “Fourth Succession War,” one of the most famous conflicts in BattleTech lore featuring 14 missions and seven “Battle Quests” featuring large-scale conflicts set on custom battle grounds. Improved urban warfare also awaits with Mega Cities that are significantly larger than any Urban Centers previously seen in the MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. In addition, players can look forward to more All-Out War scenarios, designed to make your hulking squad of building-sized ‘Mechs feel like part of a larger force in the field. All this comes with over 20 new Mech variants, new Jungle and Tourmaline Desert biomes, and a wide array of procedurally generated missions to take Mech warfare to the next level.

Players can also look forward to a free update to the base game, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries adding significant first-in-series features, including the introduction of Melee Combat! For the first time in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, players will be able to get up-close and personal with rival Mechs with the ability to swing and punch. In addition, for the first time, players will be able to switch between any of the AI-controlled Lance ‘Mechs on a mission. This seemingly small update introduces huge impacts on gameplay, essentially allowing the player to bounce between direct control of each Mech in their squad with the push of a button.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries finds players in the battlefields of the future, dominated by BattleMechs, hulking machines of war capable of leveling entire cities. As the inheritor of a once-glorious Mercenary company, the quest for glory and revenge will stretch light years, chasing the threads of interstellar intrigue on the journey to become an elite MechWarrior and mercenary commander.

Legend of the Kestrel Lancers expansion key features:

  • Story Rich Campaign: Set during the “Fourth Succession War,” one of the most famous periods of conflict in BattleTech lore, players can look forward to an epic 14-mission campaign complete with custom dialogue
  • Urban Warfare: Explore and destroy Mega Cities significantly larger than any Urban Centers previously in the MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries
  • All-Out War: These grand-scale scenarios are designed to make the player feel like their Mercenary company is part of a larger force at play on the field of combat
  • New Biomes: The operatic scope of the campaign’s original story calls for equally impressive environments. Players can look forward to exploring new Mega City, Jungle, and Tourmaline Desert biomes on their journey across the galaxy

Base Game Update key features:

  • Melee Combat: For the first-time, players will be able to swing and punch with close quarters mech-on-mech combat
  • Mech Switching: Take on full direct control of any AI-controlled Lance ’Mechs in any mission with the press of a button

MechWarrior fans can also look forward to a physical box set edition for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries for PlayStation and Xbox systems this November. More details will be released at a later time.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and the Legend of the Kestrel Lancers expansion is developed by Piranha Games and will be co-published with Sold Out, both companies in the EG7 group for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PS4™ system, PlayStation®5, Steam, GOG.com, and Epic Games Store on Sept. 23, 2021. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries– Legend of the Kestrel Lancers have been rated T (Teen) by the ESRB on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PS4™ system, and PlayStation®5. Will the New Students be the Key to Unlocking the Mystery of Heartscape?

Hertfordshire, 16th September 2021 – Today, KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Gust Studios introduced two new students into the BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light academy: Uta Komagawa and Kirara Kuno. They join the cast in hopes of unlocking the key to each character’s lost memories and unravelling the mysteries behind this beautifully animated JRPG. BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System (playable on PlayStation®5 via Backward Compatibility), and Windows PC via Steam® and is scheduled to release across Europe on November 9th, 2021. To introduce players to the latest entry, KOEI TECMO Europe also released a Gameplay Tour Video alongside the announcement – detailing the activities available at the academy and introducing the battle system.

As the secrets behind BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light unfold, a couple of new students are transported to the mysterious floating academy, searching for clues to find their way back home, with only their names as memories. The tormented Uta Komagawa is the first new character to be announced. Originally introduced in the anime BLUE REFLECTION Ray, Uta is known to be quiet and insecure, but upon entering the academy, there’s an immediate sense that the other students are wary of her for unknown reasons. Joining Uta at the academy is the prophetic Kirara Kuno. While Kirara has indeed lost her memories, she seems to possess an otherworldly ability to predict the future. Will Kirara’s words about the future help reveal the truth behind her past?

The two new students join a cast of characters who look to deepen their bonds while exploring this beautiful yet bizarre new world. While at the academy, the characters can craft tools, cook, go on dates, and develop the school by building new facilities. Once outside the floating academy, the students enter Heartscape, a dangerous place where they search for clues about their past, look for items to craft, and battle monsters as they attempt to discover fragments of lost memories.

To help celebrate the latest edition to the BLUE REFLECTION franchise, KOEI TECMO Europe are offering two delightful special edition versions of BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light, a Premium Box version and a Collector’s Edition, exclusively available through the KOEI TECMO Europe Online Store. The Premium Box version of the game contains an Academy Notebook-styled photo album, a deluxe cloth poster, a special drama CD, an exclusive DLC costume, and the game all packaged into a beautiful collector’s box. The must-have Collector’s Edition version of the game contains all of the contents featured in the Premium Box version, as well as a canvas bag, an illustrated bath towel featuring artwork of Ao Hoshizaki, two mini acrylic charms, and an album featuring original illustrations.

Honey, I Joined a Cult Preview

Honey, I Joined a Cult

Developer: Sole Survivor Games
Publisher: Team 17
Platforms: PC
Release Date: 14 September 2021
Price: $19.99 USD – Available Here

I have to admit: when I was first offered an opportunity to do a preview for Honey, I Joined a Cult, I was excited. I mean, the idea is fantastic: having your own cult and being able to abuse people’s stup… I mean, good faith! All while you get you get rich and make your cult bigger and bigger. You may be able to summon “the squid lord” and have it wreak havoc upon the infidels. You know, faith in the unknown is something that always intrigued me since I was a kid. I thought to myself sometimes what would it be like to have some kind of deity descend upon the Earth and maybe even do battle with the “evil” army. It seems ridiculous, and it is, but so is believing in something just because the collective do the same. Honey, I Joined a Cult, puts its emphasis on the “collective belief” part. It’s a building and management simulation type of game. You build and manage, that’s it. Seriously, that’s really it. You think you’d get to sacrifice your cultists in some creative and inhumane way or summon the above mentioned “squid lord”? Think again. The game tries to make fun of its own background, that is, the 70’s and the search for “spirituality” and the “meaning of life” of that era. That means drugs, sex and rock and roll, right…right? Wrong again. This is a game with a low age rating, meaning that not even curse words are allowed. So, besides that, what is really left? Building and management with some unfunny jokes thrown in.

You can research and build strange therapy rooms such as the maggot bath; -ew…- a spirit channeling room, where the cultists will hold a seance; and even a prayer room where the leader will hold a sermon in the name of… whatever kind of thing you decided to base your cult on, but in the end, it’s just a means to make your “base” bigger and advance the game. There’s no special event introducing a new kind of therapy or even a specialized member that can administer it; everyone in your cult can do anything. It’s only later that the cultists stats will make a real difference, allowing them to partake in missions to make your cult more well known and, in turn, attract better followers.

The player is able to select between a few pre-made cult choices or mix them and make something amazingly ridiculous. This game makes no mention of any religion or belief held in the real world whatsoever, aside from the cult of “Flump” which makes reference to a certain politician from a remote country. It has a pig as a flag. That’s very cool; a political statement in a modern, western videogame. I have never seen that one before.

You can skip the intro which is basically: the cult went wrong. Everyone except you was detained by the police. The only option is, of course, to create a new cult. Once you sort what kind of cult you’ll want -I, personally, went for the dinosaur cult which worships the mighty “Grimlock”-, you’ll have the game guide you through a seemingly never ending number of tutorials. There’s a lot of parameters and stats that both your cult HQ and its members have. The heat gauge, for example, will tell you how much negative attention your cult has; if it gets too high, you’ll have protesters or even the police at your door. Still, the game is very lenient to the player; I initially let a lot of people die or leave the cult in dissatisfaction, making the heat gauge go up significantly, but still, no protesters or police in sight. I’d prefer a “game over” in this circumstance, with the game subsequently giving tips to better manage your cult. It would make things flow better, in my opinion, without leaving you wondering what went wrong in some cases.

To advance the game, the player needs to research and create rooms to attend to the cultists basic needs lest they go even crazier and start to break things and eventually leave the cult or die. Like any self-respecting cult, you’ll also need ways to rob… ahem, “collect donations” from worshippers so the cult can prosper, and of course, increase your influence over them; it’s with the use of these two main assets, that you’re able to research and build new rooms. It’s only through research, which is presented as a skill tree, that you’re able to build new kinds of therapy rooms, increase the number of cultists your base can hold, and even new types of food they can eat. When everything goes according to the plan, cultists will level up and gain points to be distributed between their many stats which will influence their ability to perform a certain job, such as recruiting new followers and operating any of the therapy rooms better so it yields better donations and leader influence. The graphics use 2D art presented in a top down view, like what you’d see in an RPG Maker game. They’re extremely simple and drab looking. There’s a type of “70’s” background music almost always playing on repeat and some simple sound effects. The game just entered early access on Steam, but it seems the foundation is already set. That said, there’s a lot of room for improvements, and it might end up as a little fun management game when it’s finished.

Summary

Not Recommended – Honey, I joined a Cult is still very rough around the edges. The mechanics are a bit confusing, and the visuals really hurt the eyes. It just launched in early access, so it still has time to improve.

Physical Boxed Special Edition of First Person Horror Game Yuoni Announced for PlayStation 5

0

Meridiem Games to release a special boxed ‘Sunset Edition’ across Europe in December

Madrid, Spain. September 16th, 2021. Meridiem Games is thrilled to announce that the chilling first-person horror game, Yuoni, will be released as a boxed special edition for PlayStation 5 across Europe on December 3rd. Developed by Tricore Inc and published by Chorus Worldwide Games, Yuoni tells the tragic story of Ai, a young Japanese girl who is haunted by otherworldly entities in a living ghost story where the sun never sets.

Meridiem Games will be responsible for the manufacture and distribution of the boxed special edition of Yuoni across European territories. Yuoni – Sunset Edition will include a specially designed box and a set of postcards illustrating some of the terrifying artwork from the game.

About Yuoni.

Ai is a grade-schooler in 1990s Japan who is about to realise just how isolated she is. Forced to play children’s games in a world of never-ending dusk, Ai is hunted by otherworldly entities as her life hangs in the balance. When these horrors begin to bleed into the real world, Ai must accept that she has only three choices: hide, run, or die.

  • Evolving gameplay – Test your courage in a dangerous game of hide and seek before initiating a terrifyingly twisted version of tag with abominations not of this world. Use the items you’ve gathered to flee your sunset hell, but be sure to remember the paths you’ve taken or risk being trapped there forever.
  • Japanese locations ablaze with a haunting, beautiful sunset – Experience an unnerving mix of beauty, fear and nostalgia in a mysterious world where a Japanese house, school and hospital are all inexplicably connected. Explore corridors dyed twilight crimson, witness the ethereal glow of amber through paper walls of a traditional Japanese house and escape creeping black shadows in hospital rooms where the power is somehow always out.
  • Hide or die – 10-year-old Ai has no defensive measures to defeat the enemies you face; instead, you must take advantage of each spirit’s weaknesses to survive. Hold your breath to sneak past blind foes or dash past deaf ones as quick as your little legs can carry you. And if you can’t get away in time, prepare to suffer a dire fate at the hands of unimaginable forces.
  • A tragic tale of friendship, betrayal and facing your demons – Mute and anxious, Ai is grateful when she makes a group of friends to play with. But it turns out that the ghostly apparitions trapped in the world of dusk aren’t the only things she has to contend with; ghosts can be cruel, but children even more so. Your classmates harbour dark thoughts and harrowing secrets that you must uncover to progress. Throughout the game, Ai will learn more about her new friends than perhaps she’d care to know…
  • If only there were another way… – Upon clearing the game, another ending will become available to you. What story will this new path unveil? Slipping back into the terrifying world of Yuoni will see you face considerably more challenging foes for an even greater reward.

Yuoni – Sunset Edition will be released on December 3rd for PlayStation 5 across specialist European stores.

Eastward Review

Eastward

Developer: Pixpil
Publisher: Chucklefish
Platforms: Nintendo SwitchPC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 16 Sept 2021
Price: $24,99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Do you know how they say that nothing beats mom’s cooking? Even the simplest meal has that special something when it’s made by your mom. Many studies were probably done on that topic but I think we can all agree (or assume) that it’s because it is made with love. Love instantly makes any meal better. And that’s what made me notice Eastward. It has cooking, therefore, it has plenty of food. But is it made with love? Not just food in the game, but the whole game as well. Let’s find out.

Story

In the near future, society is starting to collapse, and the human population is at an all-time low. A deadly toxic presence has spread across the land, destroying and devouring everything in its path. If you’re lucky to escape the slow crawling miasma, you had no choice but to retreat underground and start a new life. It’s what many did in Eastward and that’s how we ended up with thriving underground complexes and mines. You can still go out on the surface, it’s not poisonous but dangerous due to ferocious monsters now and whatnot. And this is where our protagonist duo comes into play. John and Sam. Solve puzzles using both, fight through the dungeons, unlock hidden paths, do some quests and stop by every once in a while to cook something delicious. And with love, of course.

Gameplay

Eastward is a simple Zelda-like RPG (I’m talking about those from the Game Boy and Super Nintendo era, though), full of intricate details and things to do and discover. Now, let’s talk about our main characters more. John is a simple melee-focused character, equipped with a frying pan (don’t laugh, it’s a super useful weapon here actually), then later a flamethrower and a cog shooter. On the other hand, Sam could be labeled as a support character who will often get you out of tight spots with her kinetic blast. But it’s not all about fighting in Eastward. You’ll spend most of the time traveling through incredibly detailed areas, solving main and optional quests, and do a whole lot of cooking.

Visuals

The combat in Eastward is satisfying, engaging, and colorful but that’s not the main selling point of the game. If you heard about this game in previews before or stumbled upon a trailer, then you’ll know what it is. Eastward is a beautifully made and charming old-school RPG. It is a joy to look at it as much as it is to play. The level of detail in every area and in every city you visit is downright insane. Some sections feel like a game within a game. I like the overall choice of a warm color scheme as you play, it really amplifies the vintage vibe throughout the game.

Audio

It would be a crime to write this to the end and not mention Eastward’s marvelous soundtrack. The music blends in so naturally with the game that I would often forget it exists. Of course, it would always be there and playing but these 8-bit tunes go perfect with the game that I wouldn’t change a thing. It just fits so well. And despite the lack of full voice acting in the game, the comprehensive characterization of everyone (main characters and every prominent NPC) definitely makes up for it.

Overall

The only bad thing about Eastward is that I started reviewing it pretty early all things considered. It’s only September so I can’t recommend it as a perfect Christmas game. Which is what it is. The comforting atmosphere, the meditative 8-bit soundtrack, lovable cast of characters, and engaging combat………it all comes together as a part of a perfect dish. While the introductory premise of Eastward comes with that post-apocalyptic feel, I love how there’s never a sense of rush or impending doom as you play. It’s like a game telling you to “take your time, this is one a lifetime experience”. And you know what? That’s what Eastward really is. Don’t sleep on it and definitely don’t wait until Christmas to play it. You owe it to yourself.

A light-hearted city-building strategy simulation set during medieval times, Lords and Villeins has noblemen and ladies develop family dynasties. Assign villagers different tasks, duties, taxes, expand the production chain, train an army for the king, and craft a unique story of a medieval lord.

The Early Access version of Lords and Villeins includes the majority of the core mechanics present in the upcoming 1.0 release including a number of peasant zones and professions to develop production chains of more than 90 resources ranging from food and commodities to building materials and equipment, four domesticated animals to tame and care for, character customization for the ruling family, and highly developed AI capable of simulating whole families of medieval peasants at once.

Key Features

  • Nearly 20 different zones and professions for villagers to perform and managed by the feudal lady or lord
  • 90+ resources to be used in a fully functional production chain
