Wargaming Sydney takes top honours at the 2021 Australian Game Developer Awards

Thursday 7th October: Wargaming Sydney, Australia’s largest AAA games development studio, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Adam Lancman’ and ‘Rising Star’ Awards at GCAP’s 2021 Australian Game Developer Awards.

The Awards are a national celebration of outstanding games and individual achievements by Australian game developers, run by the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA).

Steve Wang, Wargaming Sydney General Manager, was awarded the distinguished ‘Adam Lancman Award’, which honours an individual who has helped the game industry advance to a better place, either through facilitating a better game community from within, or by reaching outside the industry to advocate for video games.

An industry veteran, Steve has helped to advance, shape, and support the Australian gaming industry for the past 37 years. His career started by co-founding Micro Forte, which oversaw the development of titles including Enemy Infestation, HotWheels Bash Arena, and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.

In the early 2000’s, Micro Forte created BigWorld Technology, a game engine specifically designed for building MMOs and online games and was the first company to develop such a middleware platform, with Steve in the role of COO.

In 2012, Wargaming, a BigWorld customer, saw the value of the studio’s leadership, talent and technology and acquired the studio, to which it became Wargaming Sydney.

Ron Curry, IGEA CEO, says it is an honour to award Steve the ‘Adam Lancman Award’.

“Steve is the quintessential, humble leader who shies away from the spotlight, but always makes himself available for advocacy and government facing engagement with IGEA, on behalf of the entire sector. In the past three decades, he has tirelessly advocated for, supported, and significantly shaped the Australian game development industry.

From co-founding Micro Forte, to putting Australia on the global map through BigWorld technology, to growing the next generation of talented developers at Wargaming Sydney. Steve is passionate about educating and growing the skillset of his team, and this is evident with the former staff now working in global gaming companies around the world, to hosting free monthly development meetups in the studio,” said Ron.

Ash van Wyngaard, Product Manager, also won the coveted ‘Rising Star Award’.

Passionate about supporting individuals and communities who are underrepresented and less privileged, Ash has spearheaded several initiatives, including bringing ‘Women Game Jam’ to Australia and volunteers at charities, Street Work and Share the Spark. She is also a Women in Games Ambassador.

Steve Wang said Ash is a highly deserving recipient of the Award.

“Ash is an inspirational role model to many of our staff and the broader gaming community. Ash is a formidable, driving force for positive change, and we are excited to see the impact she has made and continues to create within the industry,” said Steve.

Immersive Language Learning Game Influent Graduates to iOS October 20

New Features, Languages Debut in Mobile Version After Entertaining While Teaching More than 500,000 on Steam

LOS ANGELES, California – Oct. 6, 2021 – Influent, the immersive language learning game from Three Flip Studios that taught new languages to more than 500,000 students on Steam, expands its curriculum to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, Wednesday, October 20, with new features and languages.

Influent teaches vocabulary and aural reception of more than 20 languages by simulating how native speakers learn: through exposure to the real-world context of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, but in a virtual world. Influent doesn’t replace other language learning tools but complements them – and even adds a spaceship complete with lasers!

Walk in the shoes of Andrew Cross, inventor of the SanjigenJiten, a device that scans objects and provides their names in any language. After the CEO of Technoglobe, a money-hungry big tech corporation, steals his technology, Andrew raises money on crowdfunding site Firestarter by hosting a language learning marathon live-streamed on Flinch. By mastering more than 420 words in a foreign language based on items in his apartment, he’ll try and raise enough money to prove it was his invention all along!

Freely explore Andrew’s apartment, tapping on objects like a pillow on a bed, fruit in a refrigerator, or a video game on a shelf to collect words strewn throughout. Play a variety of mini-games to test these learnings and earn the five points needed for mastery of each word. Included in these games is Seek and Destroy, where players pilot a remote-controlled spaceship to find and shoot the object that matches the presented word. New aural and textural Reversal Modes introduce the challenge of finding words based on either their audio pronunciation or their textual display.

Also new to Influent on mobileis a revamped progress tracking system, which measures proficiency with words as they go from unknown to mastery while monitoring any setbacks. Discord integration allows students to share their progress with the community and help others with their learnings. Polish, Welsh, and the highly-anticipated Dutch, along with a completely revamped German language implementation debut exclusively on mobile.

“Bringing Influent to mobile isn’t just a way to introduce a new audience to this method of learning a new language, but also a chance to improve and expand on the game,” said Rob Howland, Founder, Three Flip Studios, and creator of Influent. “Enabling quick and fun sessions on the commute to work, during breaks at class, or right before turning in for the night opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for Influent.”

Influent launches Wednesday, October 20, on iOS via the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch as a free download with French, Italian, and Korean packs available for free. Additional language packs are available for $3.99 each.

Influent language packs include English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Swedish, Latin, European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Dutch, Polish, and Welsh.

For more information, please visit Influent’s official website, join the official Discord server which features in-game integration to track and share progress with others, check out the game on Twitter and Instagram, and follow Three Flip Studios on YouTube and Twitter.

Steel Assault Review

Steel Assault

Developer: Zenovia Interactive
Publisher: Tribute Games
Platforms: PC (Reviewed), Switch
Release Date: 28 September 2021
Price: US$ 14.99 – Available Here

Overview

2021 is shaping up to be the year of indie action games. At least for me, this is the third high quality indie game that I’ve reviewed in such a short span of time. If the developers keep this up, I won’t have more time for “AAA” games. Thank god… I mean, there are still good “AA.. Ok, enough with this “A” thing, I hate it. I think I’ll refer to those “A” games as bloatware from now on. I’m just kidding! Steel Assault is developed by Zenovia Interactive. Initially a Kickstarter project, it finally came to light last September. Steel Assault is an action-platformer game in the mold of 8 and 16-bit arcade titles.

Story

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic “America”. As Taro Takahashi, a super agent in an organization that uh… fights evil, I guess, the player must overthrow a dictator and his army of high tech minions. That’s it. There’s absolutely no exposition to anything whatsoever, apart from some dialogues that don’t explain much. And that’s fine for a game like this, really.

Gameplay

Steel Assault is an old-school 2D side-scrolling, action-platformer game; this alone should already give the player a very good idea of what’s to come. Taro makes use of a high-tech whip that he can swing in all eight directions to attack. He can also slide to avoid attacks as he’s invulnerable for a short amount of time. Last, but most importantly, he can instantly attach a zipline to -almost- any surface, even in the middle of a jump provided there are two points to accommodate it. This is what sets Steel Assault apart from other games in the same style. There’s a tutorial mode that teaches all the mechanics, so there’s no need to worry about it being complicated. You can practice as much as you want before starting the game in earnest. Unfortunately, the zipline mechanic, as interesting as it is, is implemented in a bit of a conservative way. It’s only really mandatory in some sections of the game’s stages; it’s used normally to climb a wall or place Taro in a position to avoid damage in a boss battle.

The pacing of the game is really fast, and will require practice so the player can recognize enemy patterns and navigate the stages without taking too much damage. These types of games are normally infamous for their difficulty, and Steel Assault is no exception. The problem here is that the game is super short; on normal difficulty it should take the average player roughly two hours, and that’s with deaths and retries included. This shouldn’t be a problem if the game’s difficulty was balanced adequately; normal difficulty is satisfying but too forgiving, with a lot of checkpoints and life replenishes. You can even power through many sections as you have too much HP and enemy damage isn’t enough to stop you from reaching the next checkpoint. In contrast, expert mode is a bit too difficult; there are no checkpoints or life refills and dying in a boss battle means going back to the start of the stage. I personally think this a huge problem since a lot of people will finish the game in under two hours on normal or easy difficulty and never touch it again. If you find the normal difficulty being too easy, I urge you to try expert difficulty or arcade mode.

Visuals

The graphics are top notch, one of the best in the genre. It uses pixel graphics with so much detail and fluidity, that it looks like a high budget arcade game of the early 90’s. In fact, there’s so much on the screen in some parts that it makes it difficult to see what’s what, but that’s a very minor issue. There is a good amount of customization options in this department; you can use a bilinear filter, which applies a blur to the pixels, and a CRT filter with scanlines, including an adjustable monitor curvature for a true to life arcade experience. You can use all of those combined or no filter at all.

Audio

Along with the graphics, the sound production is also excellent. The music is high quality and is also amazingly composed, with exhilarating tunes fitting of an action arcade game. Actually, don’t take my word for it this time, just listen to this: Heart of Concrete – BLUEPRINT: Steel Assault ver. QWESTA. There’s also an option to use FM versions of the soundtrack if you want the game to sound like a true 90’s arcade game.

Overall

It’s really good to see games like this making a comeback. We’re finally at a point where indie games of today can look like the beloved arcade games of a now distant era. Steel Assault almost checks all the boxes of a true classic masterpiece. I can only hope this trend gets enough steam to continue and produce even better quality titles.

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan Review

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan

Developer: ManaVoid Entertainment
Publisher: Skybound Games
Platforms:Switch, PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4 (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview

Nowadays, it’s hard for developers to cater to all audiences without leaving out someone. ManaVoid Entertainment aim to push the boundary for inclusion with their latest, as Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan incorporates an older art style with modern stylings for an adventure meant to appeal to anyone with a heart. There is a lot going on here to speak about, but does this tale work with everything running under the hood at once, or does it weigh itself down with gimmicks? Let’s find out.

Story

The story in Rainbow Billy is quite simple. While enjoying a parade, an evil entity (the leviathan) appears, causing mayhem across the land as he drains the world of color. Now Billy must befriend others to restore color to the world. Yes, we have seen this plot before in some ways, but the execution of the narrative truly sets this title apart from the rest. Instead of battling, which you can do – Billy can try to use strong morals to speak to and understand foes, which in turn makes them allies. It’s a gentle, meaningful tale with a positive message, still managing to keep an adult interested with educational undertones through life lessons. This is what you would call a “smart” RPG due to that nature, as while you could go womp some enemies, it is far more rewarding to gain their trust or change their perception.

Gameplay

The gameplay is a bit all over the place, but everything contributes to the mechanics well enough to blend well with the premise. The RPG elements mainly consist of the battle sequences. At first glance, you can see a light inspiration of Paper Mario when battles begin, which is partially due to the layout of the battle screen. Add in a dialogue tree where you can speak to foes and you have a much different take on the genre. Through several different mini-games you can gain their trust and restore their color, where you obtain their coins, take abilities with you, and then use those said skills to acquire and befriend more island inhabitants.

The mini-games are also quite fun, taking place like a simplistic rhythm-action game at one moment, and then switching styles based on the token you use to capture a foe’s heart. You can power up allies by exploring the world to gather presents, which can be done with a claw mini-game, or by finding the correct token from another foe. Yep, there is a lot going on here, but once you get down the system, the accessibility for Rainbow Billy starts to shine as the player begins to focus on collecting.

From riding on your “friend-ship”, to tackling environmental puzzles while exploring, there is a lot to see and do as new areas become available, making this world a very satisfying place to comb over as progression is made through color. It’s a pleasant and very different take on an experience we have seen many times, but is sure to offer a refreshing break from a much darker market. If I had any gripe, it would be that the game has mild issues that slow down things a bit. Nothing game-breaking or even frustrating, mind you – just some overly long load times and mild tedium found in the mini-games. Sure, there is variety, but I would have liked to see a bit more for a world that feels yet to reach its full potential.

Visuals

The visuals in Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan are based on that early-cartoon gimmickry that we saw in Cuphead, Epic Mickey, and so on – but that works here and brings out a chipper personality for an already friendly game. It’s as if you could slice it with a knife and watch rainbows pour out. That may sound a bit much for some, but there is this over-indulgent vibe that coats the top of the adventure that give it a slightly creepy, if not unnerving feel. Animations are wonky but pleasant, only subdued due to mild slowdown and framerate drops that occur mainly with the boat itself.

Audio

The soundtrack is exactly as you would expect. Happy, energetic, and playful, fleshing out the atmosphere to bring the experience full circle. You remember Steamboat WiIlie? Well, those jolly tunes and effects are obviously tied into the ambience, giving you a reason to crank those speakers, sway your head, and enjoy the visual eye candy that lies before you.

Overall

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is a bright spot, covering ethics and morality in a way that can be consumed by almost anyone. Sure, it doesn’t re-write the RPG genre, but it does offer some unique gameplay stylings that are sure to be appreciated by audiences wanting something creative and fresh to experience. There may be a few technical hiccups on this rainbow ride through positivity, but those willing to stick around are sure to find their pot of gold.

With the ‘German Battleships: Part One’ event, a sweep of Tier III-IX German battleships hit Early Access, from the WWI-serving BB Von der Tann to the Tier IX Prinz Rupprecht. Armed with lethally precise main battery guns and a gamut of long-ranged secondary battery guns, consumables include Hydroacoustic Search, as well as Fast Damage Control Team with a limited number of charges. From Tier VII upwards, ships will also come fitted with torpedo tubes.

Tiers III-IX of these powerful vessels will be available within sequential bundles in exchange for German Tokens, a new temporary resource earned through taking part in the Personal Challenges event or obtainable from the Armory. The port of Hamburg has also been spruced up in honour of the update.

And going once, going twice! Coming up for auction will be early access to the Tier X Schlieffen, starting at 1,000 doubloons. More details about the dates and rules of the auction will be announced further into the update.

Trick or treat with new and returning game modes
The temporary battle type, Twilight Hunt, makes a ghostly entrance in this update from October 20-21, pitting 16 players both against each other and the AI-controlled Twilight Fleet in the Polygon map. The aim is to earn as many Battle Points as possible by destroying the enemy armada, led by the fearsome boss ship Rasputin. Hop aboard the monster ships Fangblade, Thornridge, and Lobster-Eyed for the spookiest experience!

From the start and until the end of the update, old favorites Operation Saving Transylvania and Sunray in Darkness will be making a grand comeback.

More game-changing additions
In Personal Challenges, players must fill out the mission requirements of each personal records table to progress onto the next part and bring in those juicy rewards – coal and German Tokens, that can be used to obtain new German battleships plus a host of camouflages and flags.

Submarines will also be available for rental in random battles to test this class in a live environment with their new balance changes.

Espire 1: VR Operative Invictus Update Offers Agents New Map and Oculus Challenges for Quest Platforms

Developer Digital Lode and Publisher Tripwire Presents Raise the Stakes for Espire Agents with Free Update Today for Oculus Quest and Quest 2

ROSWELL, Ga. – Oct. 6, 2021 – Publisher Tripwire Presents and developer Digital Lode announced today the launch of the Espire 1: VR Operative Invictus update, the latest free update for the top selling and award-winning virtual reality (VR) stealth experience. Available today for Oculus Quest and Quest 2 VR platforms, today’s update introduces the brand-new map, Coober Pedy with new Combat, Objective, and Stealth Virtual Challenges for players to tackle. In addition, Oculus Challenge Leaderboard support has been added for Quest platforms for each new Virtual Challenge, allowing Espire agents around the world to compete for the best scores.

Espire 1: VR Operative set the new gold standard for the stealth genre in virtual reality, delivering gameplay mechanics for the stealth and action genres that have yet to be explored in the space. Players are charged with the role of an “Espire Agent” and use cutting-edge Virtual Reality hardware to remote-operate the Espire model 1 drone.

Espire 1: VR Operative Invictus update highlights include:

  • Oculus Challenges Support: The Invictus update includes support for the “Oculus Challenges” feature. Compete for 1st place in regular Oculus challenges that are set by the Digital Lode developers! New Challenges will appear in Espire 1‘s main menu each week and are integrated with the Oculus mobile app where you can invite friends and compete for the top spot during the limited time each challenge is open for competition.
  • Coober Pedy Map: Set in the remote underground mining town in South Australia of the same name, Espire Agents are charged with infiltrating Ophis’ headquarters in this new scenario, featuring a hotel, church, and series of caves interconnected by the twisted series of tunnels below.
  • Horcotes Elimination Challenge: Go in quiet or with guns blazing in this new Elimination Virtual Challenge. Explosives and turrets are scattered throughout the map.
  • Cicurina Hostage Rescue Challenge: Locate and free the heavily guarded hostages and don’t forget the tools and tactics at your disposal. Throw objects to distract guards with sound, sneak up behind a guard for a “hold up,” or activate bullet time to steal a guard’s weapon right out of their hands.
  • Crassipes Stealth Challenge: Use the cover of darkness to make your way through the level without being spotted and take care to avoid activating the mines.

In addition, developer Digital Lode has included numerous technical, and quality of life improvements based on feedback from the player community with today’s Espire 1: VR Operative Invictus update launch.
