Final Street Fighter V Character, Luke, Fights for the Future

As showcased during the “Street Fighter V Fall Update” digital event on November 23, Luke is bringing his aggressive and powerful playstyle to the esteemed Street Fighter™ V roster as the 45th and final character in the game. Luke arrives with a troubled backstory, as dramatic events from his childhood have forged a path forward. Although this entirely new character has a dark past, he has a bright future when it comes to his unique battle mechanics and importance in the world of Street Fighter. Luke is available now in Street Fighter V and he will also play a key role in the next Street Fighter project.

A preview of Luke’s backstory was shown in the recent Fall Update, as viewers got a glimpse of the tragic event involving Luke and his father. After that fateful day, Luke swore to dedicate his life to become one of the best fighters in the world. As part of his training and his newfound discipline, Luke decides to join the military, where he meets a familiar fighter who helps him on his journey.

Luke’s gameplay is very offense-focused, excelling at keeping pressure on his opponents in order to set up a variety of attack opportunities. For example, “Flash Knuckle” is a highly effective combo finisher where each punch button leads to a different forward-moving attack. Luke’s distance game comes in the form of a projectile called “Sand Blaster,” which allows him to shoot energy from his hands and deal with opponents at mid-to-long range. To round out his arsenal, Luke is armed with a unique V-System that fills his V-Timer as he inflicts damage, rewarding an offensive playstyle.

Luke can be acquired with the Season 5 Character Pass or the Season 5 Premium Pass. He can also be purchased separately or for 100,000 Fight Money. Although Luke is the final character to join the robust Street Fighter V roster, Capcom Pro Tour 2022 DLC and a new battle balance adjustment will be available in March 2022, with other character-specific fixes added as needed.About Street Fighter V: Champion Edition
Street Fighter V: Champion Edition includes all content (excluding Fighting Chance costumes, brand collaboration costumes and Capcom Pro Tour DLC) from both the original release and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. In total, this robust edition of Street Fighter V features 40 characters, 34 stages and over 200 costumes.

About Street Fighter V – Season 5
Season 5, the final season of Street Fighter V, offers an additional five new characters, two new stages and over 30 new costumes to current players, bringing the final totals in the game to 45 characters, 36 stages and over 230 costumes.

The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf Review

The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf

Developer: OSome Studio
Publisher: Microids
Platforms: Xbox Series X Xbox OnePlayStation 4PlayStation 5Nintendo Switch, PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 26 Oct 2021
Price: $29,99 USD – Available Here

Overview

There are some great works of art that are so acclaimed and renowned that they are able to bridge generational gaps and leave a permanent mark in history. Still, I wouldn’t go as far as to call The Smurfs a great work of art, but the impact is there, right? I mean, who hasn’t heard of them by now? We have toys, animated movies, board games, all sorts of merchandise and I’m pretty sure I saw a Smurf-themed vinyl in Forza Horizon 5 last week. The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf certainly isn’t the first game out of this IP (a quick glance at Wikipedia says it is the 20th Smurfs game) but it is the first one I get to play. And you know what, it was a perfect game to play during this rainy weekend. Got me a cup of hot chocolate and I’m all cozied up in this room while it is raining outside so I might as well explore a forest or two with these blue critters.

Story

If you know anything about The Smurfs, then hearing the name Gargamel certainly rings a bell. Their old nemesis has found a formula for a special kind of plant. An evil plant that’s called vileaf. This plant produces viletrap seeds, which can attract and imprison Smurfs. And not only that, but this plant is incredibly toxic, ruining the forest wherever it spawns and destroying Smurfs sarsaparilla fields. Papa Smurf decides to ask some of his fellow Smurfs to help him find the ingredients for a super-powerful antidote for all the plants sick from the vileaf. Thanks to the “smurfizer”, an invention from Handy Smurf, go on an adventure to find the ingredients and free your fellow Smurfs – and save the whole village if possible.

Gameplay

Now, how to properly translate that smurfizer? Or better yet, describe it. The smurfizer is a PG-friendly version of a flamethrower where instead of destroying the weeds with flame, you revert them back to normal by spraying the healing fluid wherever you find some vileaf. It is a pretty simple tool that is incredibly satisfying to use. I can’t tell you how many times I got sidetracked just going out of my way to find some vileaf to destroy. You start the game playing as Handy Smurf and later you get to use the smurfizer as Smurfette, Brainy Smurf, and Chef Smurf. And of course, as you play, you acquire some new abilities such a gliding and sprinting. Besides following the main story, the game is also filled with loads of collectibles and upgrades to discover. So you’re a completionist like me, consider that the length of the game can be doubled. The enemies are pretty easy to dispose of, they tend to telegraph their attacks, and one well-placed head splat or just using a smurfizer on them will do. Almost every other enemy requires a different strategy so once you find yourself surrounded by 2-3 different ones, the fights can be as engaging as they are colorful.

Visuals

The game looks great and plays great. It is incredibly gratifying destroying vileaf all over the map and in a way, changing the structure and design of the levels. In my dozens of hours of playtime, I haven’t encountered a single bug or a framerate loss so thumbs up for releasing a game in a perfect state (something that other developers should look up to). The platforming is precise and with zero input delay although there were times when some sections of levels tend to be too colorful so you can have a hard time figuring out what object is part of platforming and what is merely a background asset.

Audio

If you’re one of the younger readers, you’ll have no problems recognizing some familiar music when it comes to Smurfs (I could swear I heard some tunes from the animated show). But even if we put that aside, the soundtrack is calming, engaging, and never distracting. I’d say the overall tone of it is nothing short of tranquil and honestly, there isn’t much need for intense music when exploring the map. I did notice that it switches to a higher gear with every enemy encounter, so it can be also a bit dynamic in that regard.

Overall

And guess what, I saved the best for last. I also felt like it was necessary to point out this next feature since I couldn’t find the mention of it anywhere on the Steam store page. The game also comes with a two-player coop mode. The second player will be able to play as a tiny robot to support the first player, with different abilities: you can throw exploding seeds at enemies, you can freely fly around and scout the surroundings for your co-op partner and you can also heal the plants from vileaf curse. The two-player coop mode can be activated at any time in the game. In the end, The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf is a simple platformer that doesn’t oversell itself and it also doesn’t sell itself short. It’s not too short and with great visuals, The Smurf – Mission Vileaf can play its role as a great single-player game just as it is a coop one.

Pokémon Shining Pearl Review

Pokémon Shining Pearl

Developer: ILCA
Publisher:Nintendo
Platforms:Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 – Available Here | $79.95 – Available Here

Overview

Pokémon has been on a path of evolution this prior generation. With the releases of Sword and Shield and Let’s Go!, it is obvious that Game Freak have shifted into a new gear, which have left some fans in the dark of that core experience they may be familiar with. Enter Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Being remakes of the 4th generation titles, these two titles look to offer updated visuals with a lot more of the same with a whole new developer. Is this formula still worthy of a fully priced release, or have we moved past that old style? Let’s find out.

Story

I think most know this narrative, or Pokémon fans will anyway. Based in the Sinnoh region, players are out to become a Pokémon master by conquering eight gyms that grant entry into the Pokémon league. Along your travels, you also encounter Team Galatic, who are out to completely recreate the current Universe, utilizing a few legendary Pokémon in order to succeed. It is up to the trainer to take them down and bring peace over the region, while still trekking along and gaining those badges while filling a Pokédex.

For the remakes, the story is almost exactly the same, with no major changes outside of cutscene appearances. Sure, one could complain that more wouldn’t hurt on a system with greater possibilities, but for fans craving some nostalgia, this duo of titles still play out nicely, offering a good amount of post-game content after you finish the actual story.

Gameplay

Almost everything in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is shot for shot from the original titles. These games feel exactly like they did years ago, with minor improvements added that refine the experience for the Switch. The protagonist controls a bit easier this time around, with the ability to play with the D-Pad or the analog. The Pokétch is also back, but controls quite a bit differently this time around. Using the right shoulder button, players can activate the device – bringing up one of the many apps that still retain their touch-screen features. Sure, it was a lot more intuitive on the Nintendo DS, but it gets the job done here.

Also updated are HMs and TMs. TMs are disposable yet again (as they were in the originals), but HMs now have a new take. Instead of HMs altogether, players are given TMs to teach Fly, Surf, and so on to their team. If you do not want to clog space, simply using the HM app on the Pokétch will allow a wild Pokémon to appear and perform the special move – which means more space for teammates you want to keep. It is an acceptable improvement that does enough to assist, without hindering the Diamond and Pearl you remember.

Speaking of changes, the Experience Share is now on constantly, with no option yet to turn off. This does make training easier and eases the grind, but also takes away a lot of the exploration and repetition that veterans may crave.  Contests are back in bloom, but have also changed. Rather than dolling up your squad, these bouts revolve around a rhythm action portion, where the player utilizes capsule stickers and moves in order to get ahead of the competition. Out of all the additional content and tweaks, I favored the new contests the least, but most still are to enjoy what they have to offer as what is here is still decent enough. The Grand Underground now has is vast and feels a bit modernized, with new ways to capture starters, rare species, and so on. You may not love tapping away at those walls before, but there are a lot of statues and features to find within this section that players are sure to soak hours into.

Pokémon has come a long way, but there is just something about going back to the roots of the franchise that makes these remakes special. From the random encounters in the grass, to the spontaneous trainer battles, there is a lot to appreciate here, and even more to be nostalgic for as not enough has changed to put off returning players. I was entering adulthood when Diamond and Pearl made its debut, and this may be the first remake of any title that simply made me giddy, simply reliving small moments that were more passive the first go-around.

Visuals

I know a lot of people will call these character models “chibi”, as they kind of are in the overworld. That said, it really fits as if you are going to upgrade the visual style on its own, this was the choice to make as those overworld sprites look great. Battles of course are a visual treat, and bring back a lot of what we saw within Pokémon Battle Revolution, but with far more polish and all new animations. The menus are also quite nice, streamlined for access – with available hints ready for those who may be a bit lost. One small hiccup is the overworld animations when a Pokémon is following. I don’t know what it was about this, but not one of the creatures seemed to be able to keep at the same pace as my own character, so I mostly kept that turned off as it just looked a bit awkward.

Audio

As far as music goes, this is one of the best soundtracks in the franchise’s long history. Luckily, nothing was altered other than quality, bringing old tunes to life in a whole new way. I do think the cries take a bit longer to get used to, but there are even options to alter that if you please, as these developers tried to create something for everyone by including new and old.

Overall

Years ago, I played Pokémon until I found myself burnt out, right as we entered the third generation of games. Diamond and Pearl are the titles that got me re-enthused with the franchise, and have managed to do it all over again by re-releasing at a time when Pokémon crosses into new territories that some of us “old-timers” feel weary to step. For most Pokémon fans, you don’t need a review to know if you will like either of these titles. It’s a pure Pokémon experience, with updated visuals and mechanics that streamline the adventure slightly, leaving enough meat on the bone so one can shiny hunt, breed, and train to their heart’s content. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the most true titles to date on the Switch, and the best way to stick your toe back in the water if you have been away for a while.

“We were very familiar with Mitchell when he approached us,” says Samuli Syvähuoko, founding Partner at SISU Game Ventures. “And when we saw the rest of the team he had gathered, we were interested right away. It was clear pretty soon they were passionate about building the type of progressive company culture we’ve frequently seen succeed in mobile. They were a perfect fit for SISU.”Pocket Burger Games is currently a creative team of five developers, who have worked on massive hits across the industry, including at Space Ape Games, Next Games, Gram Games, Lionhead and Rovio Entertainment. This investment round gives Pocket Burger the ability to grow its team to launch and grow its first of many titles.
