Samba de Amigo: Party Central Review

Samba de Amigo: Party Central

Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega
Platforms: Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

Samba is back! It’s great to see the little franchise that could seeing new life again, as Sega have brought back their rhythm party franchise on the Switch with a lot of new features. If you are new to Samba de Amigo, we first saw this little monkey back on the Dreamcast, with another release on the Wii years later. Its been quite a wait, but can this property still shake it? Let’s find out.

Story

There really isn’t much of a story within Party Central as the game is focused on quick party modes, but there is a little mode that those who go in solo should enjoy. “StreamiGo!” has Samba set his aspirations high as he looks to be a huge online streamer. In this mode, players simply compete for high scores to gain followers, with a fun, virtual chat following along. Its a ton of fun, but Samba is a mascot for Sega, even to a lesser degree. I feel like the lack of fleshing out both old and new characters in some sort of a proper narrative would have cemented that, but either way – most should still leave with a smile in what is still memorable overall.

Gameplay

Shake it! Well, sort of. If you are new to Samba de Amigo, it is a motion controlled experience mostly through and through, where players take their Joycons and move them to specific circles on the screen in order to match the beat. Its simple and easy to play, but a bit difficult to master. To mix it up, random events come up during the gameplay, such as random events that allow the player to high-five, pose, clap, and so on. Sure, it isn’t a lot and I am not a fan of any sort of clapping mechanics, but the game is so into its own mechanics, its hard not to follow along joyfully.

The biggest issue with Party Central would have to be the motion controls, even though they are mostly fluid. I have several instances during almost every song where the movements would fail to register, and the roulette options that add in other forms of motion proved to be just as finicky, as the Joycon controllers just do not have a lot of nuance for such a fast-paced experience. Sure, the game is still delightful, but it takes you out of the beat when you know you are hitting the right notes, only for the game to fail the player when it matters the most.

Luckily, there are a lot of modes to try out in this non-stop party. Aside from the StreamiGo! mode, players can play co-op in “Love Checker”, which measures performance pairing, as well as a battle mode that is as it sounds. World Party mode is also a strong highlight, with eight players playing until eliminated based on score. I don’t think I have ever seen that in a rhythm game, but it worked well and the online was stable throughout, offering a very unique online experience that most are sure to enjoy.

Audio

I don’t know if this soundtrack will be for everyone, as its mostly dated pop classics, mixed with a bit of rock, latin tunes, and even tracks from other Sega IPs such as Sonic Adventure. Yeah, its going to be really based on the user’s own preference and the soundtrack could feature a lot more content, but with upcoming packs promised, most should hopefully find their niche very quickly. The atmosphere in this game is so lively and fun, with an audience rooting you on with a ton of energy as you perform. If you have played Samba before, this shouldn’t be new, but its great to see that the zest still remains in this version.

Visuals

Want color? Well, Samba has you covered. From the in-game menus to the bursting gameplay presentation, everything is vibrant and chipper. Its a shame the gameplay doesn’t meet this level of polish, but as I mentioned, it kind of makes up for the shortcomings in some ways as you don’t really lose your spirit once you and some friends are “in” the game’s world and festivities.

Overall

Samba de Amigo: Party Central brings a fun party experience to the Switch in true form. There is just so much energy and liveliness that its hard not to fall for all the charms within the modes and entire package. I do wish there was a more expansive soundtrack, as the game’s replay value would be a lot greater with more songs. The controls are also a bit cumbersome at times, and while you can play with just the traditional set, it doesn’t have that same maraca motion control set, as even the WiiMote was a bit more fluid over a decade ago. Regardless of shortcomings, this is still a packed party title with a lot going for it. Samba is so deserving of a great comeback story, and hopefully this gem will see a lot of love down the line with even more content and polish as time progresses.

Eternights Review

Eternights

Developer: Studio Sai
Publisher: Studio Sai
Platforms: PlayStation 4PlayStation 5PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 12 Sep 2023
Price: $29.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

I like games that tend to combine the unthinkable. Two or three genres that have nothing in common morphing into one can be either a hit or miss, but once it works it works great. Eternights is trying to fit a whole lot into one game; it is a dating sim and a bit of demon fights with a side of RPG elements. Is this working as developers imagined or is this another attempt to create something new out of something predictable? Let’s find out!

Story

An anti-aging drug called Eternights mutates people into monsters, and supernatural events begin to occur. An 18-year-old boy (aka you) is attacked by an unknown woman named Delia who cuts his arm off using her scythe, and another woman he met on a dating app replaces his lost arm with a magical, glowing one that can also transform into a sword, allowing him to fight the monsters. And all of that happens in the first hour of the game. After that, it turns into a decent mix of juggling the relationships of the main character and getting better at combat.

Gameplay

When I mention dating and combat, the first association for most of you might be the Persona series. And you wouldn’t even be that far off. Besides that obvious anime aesthetic, there is one more common trait of Persona and Eternights. There is a time limit on almost everything in the game when it comes to the story and after a while, some activities might become unavailable while some others open up.

The combat is decent, nothing out of the ordinary but it’s enough to keep you engaged. Dodging the enemies with precision slows down time, giving you a better opportunity to attack. Hitting an enemy enough times within a short period creates a combo, allowing you to perform a stronger attack or a finisher. Attacking enemies or performing perfect dodges charges the elemental gauge, and parts of the gauge can be used for an elemental fist attack that breaks enemy barriers if the player succeeds in a quick-time event.

It’s also important to mention that choosing certain dialogue options while talking to other characters can increase your social stats, as well as your relationship level with other characters. Increasing the relationship level with another character grants you new abilities in combat so there’s another incentive to be a “player” if you ever needed one.

Visuals

Aside from in-game cutscenes, the game also features full animated scenes (ore could just call them movies) that change depending on the story decisions you make in the story and they’re also dependant on who you decide to date. As far as the engine goes, the game runs remarkably well and it isn’t taxing on your requirements. No slowdowns or crashes of any kind although the level design could use a little more details. The dungeons often feel empty and barren, aside from the occasional monster mobs here and there. Not many secret areas, passages, or anything, it’s pretty straightforward from start to finish.

Audio

The game is fully voiced in English, Japanese and Korean. While English is my preferred choice when it comes to audio, I feel like there are far more emotions and commitment that went into Japanese voice acting here. Every character has a distinct personality boosted by great voice acting although some characters might toe the line of being annoying due to their “animeness” (overreacting, being unreasonably emotional about simple things, being unnecessarily edgy, and so on).

Overall

Eternights is not here to reinvent the wheel and it’s obvious from where it draws most of its inspiration from. Despite that, it is a small game with a lot of heart. Surprisingly packed with content for an indie game and while the story isn’t anything remarkable, it’s engaging enough that it doesn’t make you roll your eyes to the back of your head. Take it from the certified anime hater™ (disclaimer: not a real and officially recognized title).

Len’s Island Releases ‘The Cursed Underworld’ Update, Introducing New Dungeons, Customisable Gear, and Extended Gameplay

0

Len’s Island releases its biggest update to date with new armour, survival mechanics, cursed dungeons, procedural caves, and a trailer showcasing all new content.

BRISBANE – September 11, 2023 – The world of “Len’s Island” just became more thrilling as Flow Studio announces the release of their highly sought-after update “The Cursed Underworld”. Now available to play on Steam, the update boasts new game-changing features, inviting players to plunge into cursed dungeons – a hardcore alternative to the regular challenges. These new dungeons offer adrenaline-charged combat against elite adversaries and cunning traps, rewarding the brave with treasures from cursed chests.

To triumph over these challenges, players can now arm themselves with newly introduced customisable armour endowed with special abilities and potent enchanted weapons. Every armour piece is interchangeable, and enchantments can now be added to any weapon or tool, allowing for diverse combat strategies.

The most expansive feature in this update? A sprawling cave network that not only doubles the size of Len’s Island but is also procedurally generated, offering a unique exploration experience in every playthrough. These subterranean realms serve as rich mining grounds and new pathways for exploration, as they connect to the islands above.

“Our goal was to amplify the dungeon crawling and survival mechanics without sidelining the peaceful aspects of the game many love,” said Julian Ball, Founder of Flow Studio. “For every hardcore feature we’ve added, we’ve designed alternative paths for our players who enjoy calmer gameplay.”

In essence, “The Cursed Underworld” update strikes a harmonious balance between intensity and peace – enabling players to enjoy Len’s Island in different ways. Players not keen on intense dungeon-crawling can either bypass hardcore elements using the new peaceful mode or empower themselves via the skill tree and specialty armour.

The Cursed Underworld update is available to play on Steam now. In celebration, Len’s Island is currently offering a 40% discount on game purchases for a limited time only.

The game is scheduled to release in 2024. Please wishlist it from the brand new Steam page!

Announcement Trailer

About the Game

Maid Cafe at Electric Street is a leisurely maid cafe adventure set in the otaku haven of Nipponbashi, Osaka.

The protagonist of our story quits his job at an extremely toxic workplace and finds himself at a run-down maid cafe tucked away in a quiet part of Nipponbashi. There, he meets the maid Shiro. One thing leads to another, and he eventually gets appointed as the temporary cafe manager and put in charge of the management of the maid cafe. As the new manager, his first task is to scout cute girls to work at the cafe. Time to explore Nipponbashi and all the otaku stuff it has to offer!

  • Get to know the four unique main girls: Shiro, Miyu, Favna, and Honoka, all voiced.
  • Immerse yourself in lighthearted stories about everyday life with the cute maids.
  • Enjoy the modern and gorgeous pixel art graphics depicting even the finest details, including the meat buns next to the convenience store cashier and the figures on the shelves of an anime shop.
  • Go on fun dates at Nipponbashi, from anime shops to arcades to the cinema!

The Maids of Fuwa Fuwa Cafe

Shiro

A maid who loves Fuwa Fuwa Cafe. A huge otaku for anime and video games, she talks really fast when she’s gushing about the things she loves, and often splurges on merch without thinking whenever she visits an anime shop. A little clumsy, but works hard every day to become the cute maid she’s always wanted to be.

“Um, please be the new manager of the cafe!”

Miyu
A game otaku and gyaru with a big appetite. Loves both eating and cooking, and apparently really enjoys serving her cooking to customers at Fuwa Fuwa Cafe. Is actually Shiro’s friend on the online game Magic Angel, so they knew each other before actually meeting in real life.

“Hey Mr. Manager, thanks a bunch for hanging out with me today~☆”

Favna

A mysterious girl dressed in gothic Lolita fashion. Speaks in riddles and demands the protagonist become her familiar. She sometimes accidentally drops the edgy act when she’s taken by surprise though, so maybe she’s just got a serious case of chuunibyou…?

“I am the Slayer of the False God, the Queen of the Kingdom of Darkness, the All-Seeing Oracle, the Guardian of the Dream of All Things—”

Honoka
A girl with a Kansaiben dialect who works as a shrine maiden at her family shrine. Practically in charge of the shrine, she is reliable and very good at handling money, and has a strong sense of responsibility to boot. On top of that, she’s also the only glasses girl at Fuwa Fuwa Cafe!

“Ya want a thrivin’ business? That there sounds like a job for our shrine!”

Game Features

Support Your Maid Cafe Employees as the Manager!

As the cafe manager, it’s your job to allocate work to your maids. Make sure to give the right girl the right job! For example, Shiro is always enthusiastic to serve customers, and Miyu is great in the kitchen.

Of course, you can’t just sit there while they work. During opening hours, you’ll also have to make coffee and help out on the floor, so it’s not as easy as it sounds!

The Stunning Sights of Nipponbashi

In order to recreate the atmosphere of the real Nipponbashi, the game features several real stores you can find there, such as Surugaya, Sofmap, Dragon Star, Super Potato, and Karaoke Rainbow, among many others. Don’t forget to pay them a visit when you’re shopping or taking one of your maids on a date!

Collectable Gachapon

If you’ve been to the real Nipponbashi, you’ll know that there are gachapon machines all over the area. In this game, you can also try your hand at collecting your favorite gachapon series and experience that unique gacha thrill of not knowing what you’re getting. As you collect more gachapon, you can even bring them up in conversations with the girls. Keep cranking those machines until you’ve collected them all!

Sea of Stars Review

Sea of Stars

Developer: Sabotage Studio
Publisher: Sabotage Studio
Platform: Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: August 29th, 2023
Price:  $34.99USD/$50.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Sea of Stars is a retro-style fantasy RPG that pays tribute to iconic games like Chrono Trigger and earlier Final Fantasy titles. The game is a successor to Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger, and takes place in the same universe, but long before the events in the aforementioned 2018 title. With magnetic visuals and lots of catering toward nostalgia, the game has garnered a lot of hype and praise during its recent release – but it’s worth considering whether the game will stand the test of time and remain popular as the years go on, or fade into obscurity and fail to remain relevant.

Story

Sea of Stars follows the journey of two young Solstice Warriors named Valere and Zale. They explore the world, travel with different companions, and vanquish enemies as they prepare to defeat the minions and followers of the evil alchemist, known as the Fleshmancer. Valere and Zale each practice magical powers under the umbrella of Eclipse Magic, with Valere mastering the moon, and Zale the sun.

The fantasy adventure follows the flow of a traditional Hero’s Journey, making a lot of the story beats predictable but still enjoyable. The characters are charming and each has a unique trait, and the game can be really humorous at its best moments. At the beginning of the game, you can choose which protagonist to play as, which unfortunately makes them quite interchangeable in the narrative and their personalities seem nearly identical to one another.

The game takes awhile to start introducing twists and subverting expectations, which it definitely does well – however, sometimes things feel slow-moving narratively, particularly near the beginning.

As a player who hasn’t experienced the first title in the game, this was a great standalone and I would love to check out the prior game. Still, being a fan of the original game would probably add to the experience, as a lot of questions about the world and its rules would already be answered for you. Much of the lore takes time to be introduced properly for new players in this game.

Gameplay

Walking around the lush, gorgeous environments of Sea of Stars is always satisfying, and I always loved entering a new area and having the opportunity to explore. The only thing missing is more interactivity present in each level/walkable area. Sometimes, you climb up a ladder, or jump into a small crevice, only to find there is nothing there to interact with or loot. This can be frustrating particularly when you have to backtrack to where you started.

The turn-based combat is done well and is easy to learn. Once you get into the rhythm of things with your party’s attacking order, attacking and defending becomes somewhat mindless outside of major boss battles. However, combat can be a bit tedious, particularly when it comes to the lock-breaking mechanic that party members use to shut down enemy spells. Breaking these locks requires multiple attacks, and you often only have 1-2 turns before they attack, making it nearly impossible to successfully stop the enemy spell. You have to settle for weakening their attack by only breaking some of the lock, which doesn’t feel as satisfying.

Luckily, the game has numerous relics that players collect throughout the game, which function as game difficulty options that you can toggle throughout the experience. Some of these allow for easier combat, more opportunities to break locks, and keep your party alive longer. This lets players easily set their expectations for the game’s challenges.

Like many RPGs, this game has fishing and other mini games, but predictably and unfortunately, these are rather boring and don’t have much payoff in comparison to exploring and continuing the main story.

Visuals

The graphics and animation in Sea of Stars were definitely the highlight of the experience for me. With detailed constantly moving environments reminiscent of calming, serene games like Stardew Valley, I wanted to spend more time just standing around in awe of where I was. The character portraits and animations were so specific and detail-oriented. The campfire scenes where the party would rest were always fun and didn’t get old to participate in. As you pick what items to cook, you get to see a cute slideshow of images as the food was made.

When new characters are introduced, we’re treated with fully-drawn and animated cutscenes. These are incredibly beautiful, but the transition from them back into the game environment is sometimes stark considering they are completely different art styles.

Audio

The soundtrack of Sea of Stars is whimsical and classic eight-bit RPG style, with few surprises and a lot sounding very familiar. Some of the more memorable pieces are from the battle soundtracks, but overall, there weren’t many audio moments that stood out.

Overall

Sea of Stars is a solid game that can be a lot of fun. Players who love the RPG genre will likely enjoy this new title a lot, but it doesn’t necessarily do anything groundbreaking or new. However, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to a formula, especially when you understand what needs to be done well. This is a worthy adventure for those who are interested, and the beautiful environments and level design alone make for a fulfilling experience.
