GHOSTBUSTERS: SPIRITS UNLEASHED LAUNCHES ON STEAM AND SWITCH ON 10/19

Haunt or Hunt as IllFonic’s GB:SU Possesses STEAM and Switch Platforms with the Ecto Edition.

October 19, 2023 (Lakewood, Col.) – Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Ecto Edition, a 4v1 haunt-or-hunt action-packed video game from the asymmetrical multiplayer experts at IllFonic, will be joining both the STEAM and Nintendo Switch family on October 19, 2023. Rated E10+, the game will be available in the STEAM Store here and the My Nintendo Store here for $19.99.

A physical version of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Ecto Edition will be released from our physical partner, Nighthawk Interactive, later this year. Fans of Ghostbusters, STEAM, and Nintendo will now have the chance to unite forces or rally against current PC/Epic Games Store, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One users as the game supports crossplay across all platforms.

“We are super excited to bring Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to all gaming platforms.” IllFonic CEO & Co-Founder Charles Brungardt shares. “As a lifelong fan of Ghostbusters, IllFonic has been hard at work to bring busting and haunting to all fans with the Ecto Edition. We are expanding the story, adding new maps, ghost types, and more.”

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Ecto Edition is truly the full game package for new players with the digital version for only $19.99, and current players will receive all of the following with a FREE update. The Ecto Edition will include:

  • Main Narrative Story Expansion – several new story acts to the narrative progression of Spirits Unleashed. New twists and turns give the occupants of the Firehouse a new, challenging adversary to contend with, along with new conversations to have. Level up to unlock and enjoy the updated and extended narrative.
  • New Ghost –
  • Overlord Ghost Type – The Overlord. An unrelenting spectral force. Unlike other specters who prefer to hide, the Overlord SEEKS. Born of pain, fear, and darkness, the Overlord is as mighty as they are clever. They’re imbued with never-before-documented passive abilities that make them even more difficult to tether. The Overlord’s aura emits a looming dread, compounding a creeping sense of fear within anyone in range. Alas, don’t expect Overlords to “slime” or “shock” those in their way; rather, they devastate them by swinging their deadly claws and hurling any physical objects they can sink their P.K.E. into. Wrangling with an Overlord is quite a horrifying challenge, any way you set it.
  • Overlord – Samhain Variant – Behold the Ghost of Halloween! Samhain is pure malevolence, driven by the unholy desire to create a sprawling legion of darkness under his evil command. The earliest accounts of Samhain date back to the seventh century. The Celts held massive feasts in his name, though whether to entice or deter him is somewhat unclear. Regardless, his immense power and command over other creatures, living and… nonliving, is irrefutable. On the very rare occasion that Samhain has been defeated and imprisoned, he has broken free from his shackles and risen again. Stronger… and angrier.
  • Overlord – Darklock Variant – Anguish is a feeling many are aware of, but few have truly experienced. Well, be assured, it is the goal of the Darklock to guarantee EVERYONE becomes intimately familiar. As long as suffering has existed, so too has this twisted type of Overlord. Facing off against the Darklock is harrowing, indeed, not only because of the pain it can inflict but also because of the twisted sense of euphoria it emanates while feeding off the foolish few who try to stand in its way.
  • Overlord – Gravebringer Variant – Human fear of death manifested, the Gravebringer drinks dread the way the modern-day skin bags imbibe pumpkin-spiced lattes; guzzled by the gallon! The Gravebringer seeks to unlock true darkness within the heart of the hopeless. Brave men and women have been left nothing more than quivering husks after only a few moments in the Gravebringer’s presence. Isolating the weakest link in the chain and dismantling one’s resolve is a favorite pastime of this corporeal monstrosity. No other creature in any realm sends a chill up a spine like the Gravebringer.
  • 2 New Maps –
  • Petey’s Pirate Cove – ‘For libations and fun, don’t walk, but run to Petey’s Pirate Cove!’ Scallywags and buccaneers alike will find games galore, grog by the gallon, and more ghostly apparitions than a sunken shipwreck. Shiver me timbers, indeed!
  • Galway Station – Subway patrons report sightings of ghostly old-timey train cars and encounters with tormented apparitions in the underground, particularly around Galway Station.
  • Ghost Bounties
  • Character and Gear Loadouts
  • New Gear Shells to Unlock
  • New Cosmetics and Added Tenure Level
  • Countless UX, UI, Gameplay Improvements, and MORE!

Technical details on the Nintendo Switch:

The team has been hard at work adapting the game for Switch. Performing at a dynamic resolution from a range of 720 (handheld mode) to 1080p at the maximum, 30fps (industry standard for Switch). IllFonic is constantly tuning the game to push its limits.

More About the Game:

In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore open the Firehouse to you and the next generation of Ghostbusters. This asymmetrical game of hide and seek is a 4v1 setup where players will either play as part of a team of new Ghostbusters or a Ghost. This title not only allows players to enjoy the game solo or with up to four friends but also features an online and offline single-player mode, in the form of bot assisted play. Most importantly, the more you play, the more the story will unfold (with cutscenes). Those already playing will be excited to hear that this story will be expanded in the Ecto Edition coming later this year. Whether haunting or hunting, the game is easy to learn and fun to master!

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has all the iconic gear and gadgets, from Proton Packs to P.K.E. Meters and Ghost Traps that fans would expect and new gamers to the universe will enjoy when playing as a Ghostbuster. In addition, many will recognize the Firehouse and Ray’s Occult Books that act as the game’s hub. This is where players will choose missions, customize their characters, practice firing their particle throwers, and explore all there is to learn. And yes, you will hear the original film actors reprising their roles as Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, along with some new friends!

  • As the Ghost – Ghosts have multiple abilities in their arsenal, like possessing objects, of course, sliming, and more, that make haunting all the various locations a blast to play. Choose from up to five Ghosts with unique skills, ultimate abilities, and commendable minions fueled by ectoplasm. Fly around public locations and possess an inordinate amount of inanimate objects to evade pursuing Ghostbusters. Frighten citizens until they flee in fear, prank unsuspecting Ghostbusters, and hide your rifts to spawn safely in case you get trapped.
  • As a Ghostbuster – Be one of the four proton pack-wielding Ghostbusters and attempt to catch a Ghost haunting unique locations with your trusty ghost trap and tools. Use the P.K.E. Meter to sniff out rifts that act as the Ghost’s spawn points and destroy them with your Proton Pack’s particle thrower before the Ghost completes their haunt. As players progress, they will unlock cosmetics and upgrades for both Ghostbusters and Ghosts to evolve their gameplay experiences. The look and feel will deliver to fans an immersive experience in the universe, allowing them to play out their Ghostbusting fantasies.
  • Locations – Explore multiple unique locations, including a museum, winter lodge, docked ship, multi-leveled prison, an active brewery, and more. Complete challenges, customize your Ghostbuster and Ghosts and locate hidden spores, mold, and fungus to gain access to more unlockables.
  • Game Tip – As you play more, a story arc unveils itself. Follow the requests of Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore to uncover cutscenes that build an exciting tale! Yes, it’s multiplayer with more…

Meet the Future Prime Minister in “Bits of Your Life”, New “Not For Broadcast” DLC Launching Nov. 14

Explore the future Prime Minister’s past on PlayStation, Xbox, PC

LONDON – Oct. 19, 2023 – Not For Broadcast, the chaotic propaganda simulator from developer NotGames and publisher tinyBuild, plans for a special airing of its brand new “Bits of Your Life” DLC on PlayStation 4|5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023.

Bits of Your Life is the nation’s favourite talk show, where viewers get to learn more about the guests through interviews with their friends, family and co-workers. It’s a tried and tested format… but isn’t it all getting a little stale? It’s time to throw the script out the window, bring out the guests in whatever order feels “right” to you and prepare for unhinged revelations, explosive outbursts and at least a full minute of uncontrollable on-air crying.

The chaos isn’t just about ratings though – It’s a chance for the nation to finally learn more about Peter Clement, the future Prime Minister they have all come to love. Run heart-to-heart interviews with Clement’s close friends and family to understand more about his past as an adored former TV celebrity. Explore his upcoming political future and “unique” views on the state of the country while keeping the audience engaged and begging for more.

Meanwhile you’ll need to tend to the usual important work. Mute any unnecessary expletives, keep guests from getting too rowdy in the green room, and swiftly weave in the VT to keep the ratings high and the executives happy.

Explore multiple endings, secrets, and optimal routes to create the greatest show – or train wreck – possible. Check out the DLC “Bits of Your Life” on its own or as part of the Not For Broadcast season pass, which includes the previously released “Live & Spooky” DLC.

Not For Broadcast’s “Bits of Your Life” DLC will be available on PlayStation 4|5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023 for $8.99 USD. The DLC will also be available discounted as part of the Not For Broadcast Season Pass for $24.99 USD.

About NotGames

NotGames is a British game studio that opened its doors in 2013 to attempt to save the charity that brought us all together. Coming from a bizarre background of film, TV, theatre, and comedy, NotGames aren’t your usual game developers. If you’re asking, we’d like to call ourselves ‘multi-talented all-rounders’, while our former employers would probably say we’re ‘unfocussed and easily distracted’.

Exhausted after the runaway success of the cult-classic NotTheNameWeWanted and the subsequent stillbirth of NotCoD (we don’t like to talk about it), we took some time out to contemplate our navels in a dark room.

In 2017, we decided to get the band back together, with NotGames 2.0 combining satire, social commentary and original gameplay into the dystopian wonderland of Not For Broadcast

CYPRUS Oct. 19, 2023 – Crank up the volume and kill the lights! Today, at The Indie Horror Showcase, CRITICAL REFLEX turned the spotlight on not one, but four upcoming titles, ranging from the truly terrifying to the curiously gripping.

The publisher’s 3-pronged horror segment began with the surprise release of TELEFORUM, a found footage style horror game from developers Monumental Collab, which is available to play free now on Steam. The news continued with a thematic reveal of the deceptively peaceful Regular Home Renovation Simulator, an all new and expanded horror game from developer Substandard Shrimp. The horror trio closed with a mysterious TV news-style teaser for a new project by Monumental Collab entitled Drowned Lake, with a full announcement to come later this year.

In addition to the horror catalog, the showcase also introduced the hypnotic, hand-painted Flawless Abbey, an immersive grotesque fairytale full of puzzles and intrigue, unfolding before you with every step. More information about all four of these new reveals can be found below.

About TELEFORUM

TELEFORUMis a found footage style horror game exploring the unknown side of media. You’re visiting a widow’s apartment to conduct an interview about her husband’s shocking, public death. But that’s not the main reason why you’re here. It’s all about the tape, isn’t it?

Overview

It has been nearly three years since CD Projekt Red released the long awaited Cyberpunk 2077 in such a state that many were honestly shocked that the company even thought it was alright to release it in such condition. While our own time with the game was mostly painless it still was hampered through a number of massive issues and over the past few years CD Projekt Red has been working hard to address these problems through various patches, updates, and a proper “next-gen” version of the game. Incremental patches are one thing but now the developer has dropped the full 2.0 update alongside the one and only expansion they have planned for Cyberpunk 2077 in the form of Phantom Liberty. Boasting a fresh coat of paint and refined mechanics alongside tons of new content, is this the Cyberpunk fans have been hoping for for three years?

Story

It is worth noting that CD Projekt Red has offered a few different ways for players to approach Phantom Liberty. They can either choose to start a game from scratch and play from the very beginning with a fresh save, choose to start a fresh game that will immediately skip a good portion of the game’s first act and part of the second act to place them right where they will obtain the mission to kickstart the DLC, or simply by loading up one of their old saves past a certain point in the story and beginning from there. Regardless of how player’s choose to start the DLC, V will receive a call from an incredibly skilled Netrunner by the name of Songbird who is intimately aware of the problem that V is experiencing with the Relic that is slowly killing her. Songbird says she knows of a potential cure for the problem, but V needs to do something for her first and it involves traveling to the militaristic closed off portion of Night City known as Dogtown.

As usual with deals in Night City, not everything is as simple as it seems as V soon finds herself embroiled in a political spy thriller that sees her needing to assist the New United States of America’s president after their ship, Space Force One, is shot down inside of Dogtown. With Songbird only promising to assist should V help the President, things quickly escalate into an all out war involving Dogtown’s leader Kurt Hansen and other factions that come into play in what develops into an engrossing spy thriller that features a wide collection of double-dealings, betrayals, and plenty of tension that even V’s hitchhiker Johnny Silverhand gets to comment on. Combine the stellar celebrity performance of the returning Keanu Reeves with the newly added Idris Elba taking on the role of the former spy master Solomon Reed and Phantom Liberty not only has plenty of star power on offer but also a stellar storyline to match it.

Phantom Liberty‘s storyline will keep players on their toes by offering a number of poignant developments and actual consequences to the actions that they take as the DLC offers two distinct paths that diverge quite harshly from one another depending on the choices made by V. Obviously players can choose to save before making such a choice and experience both routes, and doing so will highlight just how different things can play out between the two. Combine this with the aforementioned character development and performances and players will truly find themselves in for a treat here. Songbird, while not portrayed by a famous actress, is a real highlight in this DLC and stands as one of the best companions throughout Cyberpunk 2077 and her interactions with other characters, especially her longterm history with Reed, make the narrative all the more compelling thanks to the drama involved.

It is worth noting that the game does slow down the pace of the story from time to time by making players take on various “Gigs” in-between missions. The Gigs found in Dogtown are brand new and offer their own enjoyable side-stories as well, including some real standout ones that range from ridiculously humorous to as sad as can be in Night City but it is a bit disappointing, especially for longtime players of Cyberpunk 2077, that the pacing can slow to a crawl at times waiting for the next story mission to trigger through a phone call as players go around doing busywork. That being said, at least Dogtown is full of plenty of new busywork to be had.

Gameplay

Although not particularly tied to the Phantom Liberty DLC, the release of the expansion comes alongside the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update that saw a significant overhaul to the game’s various RPG elements and mechanics. Not only has this reset the player’s skill points, allowing them to redistribute them as they please, but also seen an upgrade and modification to how cyberware implants work. Previously players would see only minimal improvements by leveling V’s various skill trees but now they have been greatly expanded with a wide array of useful combat abilities that make developing a new and unique V incredibly enjoyable and fairly easy to manage. Melee combat has seen a significant improvement in this new patch and Quickhacks have also seen an improvement through the implementation of the Hack Queue allowing players to burn through enemies using rapid hacks as long as they have RAM to do so. These only are some of the base improvements from the patch itself that has gone a long way in making the game feel like it has truly reached its RPG potential even without touching the DLC.

As for the DLC itself, players will find that Dogtown offers its own unique set of Gigs and little side missions that are fairly plentiful, though perhaps not quite as abundant as the main game. That being said, nearly all of the Gigs are enjoyable and have unique feeling encounters that make them feel like more than simply filler and those looking for random challenges will find the airdrops useful as well. From time to time an airdrop will occur and drop a crate full of useful equipment and items into the city where players will need to fight against others looking to claim the loot. These encounters are random but also perfect ways to improve V’s equipment in various ways as the gear inside is almost always worthwhile.

One new element that has been added into the game’s skill trees in Phantom Liberty is the formerly corrupted Relic tree. While not a massive tree, players will gain access to this upgrade tree with the help of Songbird and, rather than apply skill points to upgrade it, will instead be able to track down items that will unlock points that can be used to upgrade and unlock extra features for V’s already powerful arsenal, especially in the cases of players who like using arm-installed equipment like Mantis Blades.

It is worth noting that even with the 2.0 patch and being DLC, Phantom Liberty is still part of Cyberpunk 2077 as a whole and can still have some bugs randomly appear from time to time. Mostly these issues are negligible physics issues or NPCs behaving strangely but there were still a handful of crashes throughout the lengthy DLC, though considering players can easily sink over twenty five hours into seeing most of what Phantom Liberty has to offer, that isn’t too bad.

Audio & Visuals

With Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty offering a sizable chunk of new content in the form of Dogtown players will find the world is just as detailed as the rest of Night City, with a mixture of dilapidated buildings making the more lively fancier areas seem all the more vibrant. The character designs for the new characters players will meet are impressively modeled and the DLC also features some of the best action sequences of the entire game. It is worth noting that combat also feels far more fluid and dynamic, especially melee combat, though this is likely due to the 2.0 update that accompanied the release of Phantom Liberty.

Once again the voice work is exceptional throughout the DLC, with Idris Elba fitting the character of Reed perfectly but that doesn’t mean that star power is the only factor at play here. The other characters, especially Songbird, are no slouches either when it comes to making sure these characters come to life on the screen, delivering impactful feeling performances that make the story all the more enjoyable. The soundtrack consists of mostly familiar tracks of music carried over from the core game but there are also new pieces of music as well as some great pieces of background music that play through certain fights that really help accent the action.

Overall

Three years is a long time for a video game. Long enough that most people would have moved on but CD Projekt Red chose to take that time and follow through on their promise of delivering an exceptional cyberpunk-styled RPG and they have managed to finally do so. Between the revamped gameplay offered through 2.0 and the amazing quality content provided in Phantom Liberty, this DLC is truly Cyberpunk 2077 at its best and anyone who has been on the fence about the game or concerned whether or not it has redeemed itself will find that Phantom Liberty has done so in spades.

Overview

Another day, another soulslike….clone? No, not gonna say it like that, sounds a bit mean. But interestingly enough, we’re on a recent streak of genuinely good soulslike copies. It’s what I thought about Lies of P that I reviewed recently and truth be told, the first Lords of the Fallen did have that extra something that made it stand out from the rest. A distinct world that didn’t rely too much on bleak colors, terrifying bosses, visual style that was sometimes bordering on horror aesthetic, and so on. But all of these soulslike games tend to stumble on one section where it matters the most – combat. Will this sequel correct the wrongdoings of its predecessor? Let’s find out!

Speaking of which, for some bizarre reason this sequel is also named Lords of The Fallen and the devs just went back and added 2014 in the title of the first game. We already reviewed that one and this is obviously a sequel. Bearing the same name. Yep.

Story

The story continues where it was pretty much left in the previous Lords of the Fallen. Except for this time we are playing as a brand new character so bye bye Harkyr. After an age of the cruelest tyranny, the demon God, Adyr, was finally defeated. But Gods… do not fall forever. Now, eons later, Adyr’s resurrection draws nigh. As one of the fabled Dark Crusaders, journey through both the realms of the living and the dead on your quest to put down Adyr for good. There is also a rumor that following the story in certain ways can reward us with multiple endings and new classes for New Game +. And more bosses, more character classes, and more areas to explore. But does all of that also mean more fun? Let’s find out!

Gameplay

There are some new gimmicks in this sequel and most of them weren’t added for the sake of change but they do add something fresh to the gameplay. With our trusty lantern, we can now shift between umbral world (the spiritual one) and the axiom world (the world of the living). Sometimes when we have certain obstacles in one, we can shift to the other realm to progress further. We now have a lot more starting classes, with some secret unlockable ones through quests and achieving certain endings.

This time the combat feels more fluid, with a bigger arsenal at your disposal, and co-op play feels way more improved. One thing that could use some fine-tuning is the difficulty of certain bosses. I know, I know – this is a soulslike game. But occasionally it feels like someone sprinkled the bosses evenly throughout the game without taking the difficulty curve into account. It all feels very much random. For example, the very second boss in the game is way harder than the rest of the bosses you’ll encounter afterward. Imagine spending an hour trying to beat a boss in the first hour of the game and the next three are so much easier that you beat them on the first try.

Visuals

The sequel also boasts a better engine with way more detailing when it comes to the environment. The umbral realm is as eerie and gothic as the axiom realm is populated, burning, and filled with all sorts of things that are trying to kill you. The character customization in Lords of the Fallen is upgraded as well so you can finely tune the visual of your armor throughout the various sets in the game. All in all, the game looks very good, even in medium settings.

But the optimization is a whole different story, though. The game gets actually playable only after you turn on FidelityFX Super Resolution, and even that only got me above 60 fps. And that worked just fine until the latest update “rewarded” me with stuttering and slowdowns so nasty that even achieving 30 fps after that was a struggle. Not to mention that on high above, the game introduces raytracing which can be quite taxing on your performance – so stick to medium settings or lower. The funny thing is the only place where you can find that out is while lurking on the Steam discussion hub of the game, it’s not even mentioned as a flavor text in visual settings, for example.

Audio

If there is one thing that stands out in this game, it is the voice acting. It is sparse, so don’t get used to it much but when it’s here, you’ll know. It’s a shame that some NPCs aren’t more vocal, since their grimdark voice really complements the game setting. As you mindlessly explore every section in Lords of the Fallen, you’ll never be alone (even as you slaughter all enemies in the area) with random creepy noises, feral screeching in the background, with eerie windy noses keeping you company in both umbral and axiom realms. As expected, the boss themes deserve a special mention, especially the one from a second boss in the game who kindly rewarded me with so many retries.

Overall

All in all, it is not a joyless copypaste of your typical soulslike game, but Lords of the Fallen could use some fine-tuning. As of right now, prepare yourself mentally for some occasional crashes and freezes, enemies clipping through the environment, bosses stun locking you as you lie there helplessly, and most importantly – the overall unfairness when it comes to scaling the bosses’ difficulty and enemies in general. And the deeper you delve into the game, you’ll start to notice less and less variety when it comes to enemies in certain areas. It’s when the game stops being fun and gets dangerously close to being tiresome.

Later on, I just figured it would be best for me to run past everyone instead of spending a minute or two on the same enemies on my way to a boss’s door. That’s the trap of having too many enemies in linear areas, after a while the combat just starts feeling tedious and too boring to be considered challenging. If there is one thing that would make Lords of the Fallen worth your time, it’s the unique visuals and atmosphere, but when it comes to the combat and gameplay this game could definitely use more time on the drawing board.
