Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Review

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix
Platforms: Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 – Available Here

Overview

Did you know Pokémon was originally inspired by the monster catching mechanics within Dragon Quest V? Those same mechanics of sorts went on to create the Dragon Quest Monsters franchise, which while successful in the east, has been a bit absent here in terms of both popularity and consistent releases. After a lot of tugging from fans, we can now dig into another entry with Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. Bringing a few updates along with an updated visual design, is this title worth picking up, or does it not escape the shadow of all of the monster catching fare of the present? Let’s find out.

Story

You want some lore? Well this title has it. Featuring Psaro as the main protagonist, players are taken on a journey of a young demon who is unable to fight due to a curse, and must befriend monsters in order to attack on his quest for revenge. Shortly in, he discovers a purpose to this through monster wrangling, where he sets out to obtain the best team of nonhuman allies to essentially become a “monster master” by battling in various tournaments.

Sure, it sounds a bit dry on the surface, but this tale is specifically about the events that led to our hero here being the main antagonist within Dragon Quest IV. We get to see a softer, more tolerable character here, and find out some of the motivations that led to him being so bitter towards humans later in life. The story isn’t exactly deep or with a lot of substance, but when you tie the rest of the franchise in, there are so many little full circle moments that come out, with The Dark Prince acting as a long-lost puzzle piece to a story that makes Psaro more interesting as a whole. This is one of those games that will very likely lead to a lot of new interest within Dragon Quest IV, and that alone makes it worth the trek, whether you are familiar or not.

Gameplay

As far as gameplay goes, it really is quite simple. Due to your curse, you are unable to fight with a sword or magic. Instead, you must scout (DQM’s version of “catching”) monsters by facing them in battle. Players are assigned their first monster through a personality quiz, and the rest falls into play as every monster that can be encountered in the wild has the potential to be scouted. Battles occur in traditional turn-based fare that feels much like other Dragon Quest titles, where the player selects orders for the monsters before watching the attacks play out in real time. Monsters all have their own set skill tree, and leveling up your party is immensely satisfying due to how accessible this system is, as most should have things down within the first thirty minutes when it comes to battles and thumbing through the attacks your party can learn.

Speaking of party, the system in place is very well designed. Players can take four monsters with them, and also have a back-up party of four as well. Even if your backup party never touches the battlefield, they still level up and continue to gain attributes, which makes progression come early. The rest of your scouts are stored at the monster depot, which is used to essentially breed stronger fare through synthesis. Synthesis allows you to fuse together your own monster with another to create a much stronger ally, which will gain special attributes based on the prior duo’s attributes. Sure, you can scout the same version of several monsters, but this system allows each to be unique and bring something new to the table each time.

The rest of the gameplay is participating in arena matches, and exploring new areas that are unlocked through progression that provide new talent to recruit. Eventually, the system becomes a bit of a loop, with the player grinding their team, finding a boss battle, scouting and synthesizing new members, and heading out again and again until the game finishes. It may sound repetitive, but with all the mechanics in play, The Dark Prince becomes more addicting than tedious, as the rewards of progression are just so satisfying to obtain. This is a meaty game, and one that any RPG fan will be happy to soak hours at a time into.

With all of the positives comes one of the major setbacks to this new adventure: the performance. For a game built for exclusive hardware, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince has a lot of issues and snags when it comes to holding it together. The framerate is choppy, and the camera is so cumbersome because of the framerate that it can take time to get used to managing activities as simple as walking or jumping as the stutters just make the game feel rough and lacking polish. That isn’t to say that anything is game-breaking – as this title is still very playable, but much like more recent titles like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, there is definitely a lot of tremors and imperfections that made it into the final release.

Visuals

In some ways, The Dark Prince looks fantastic. With ever-changing seasons come new bursts of color and boldly lit environments that are a joy to explore. The character models also feature the signature look of the franchise, which may not look as sharp as they once did, but still are able to bring personality and life into the world. That said, f you are going into this entry thinking you are going to get the same quality and finish of Dragon Quest XI, you may be a bit disappointed with how dated things can appear. Part of me even wonders if the development for this game goes back to the 3DS, as the visuals seem on par with that system and the optimization issues hint that the Switch was not the first choice of platform for this installment.

Audio

The music is Dragon Quest. There is no other way of saying it, as all of those familiar tunes are back and do a great job at keeping the identity of the franchise alive. Yeah, some new music would have been nice, but with this franchise, I can’t find reason to complain. The voice acting is also well done, and while the protagonist is silent, the other cast do a great job of telling the story for the game. I did notice a few hiccups in terms of delayed sound effects, but mostly – everything in the audio department is as it should be.

Overall

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a new journey within a deep history that is sure to make fans clamor back once more. The gameplay is addicting and while the simplistic design and dated visuals may scare off a few RPG fans, the complete product sings due to the longevity and enjoyment that is packed into this adventure. I do think that a few patches are warranted here, as the performance is far from perfect, but once adjusted, most will be able to find a gem that is sure to be appreciated for years to come. The Dark Prince is a beacon of hope for the Monsters franchise in the west, as even with its flaws it still manages to be one of the most engaging monster-catchers on the platform. Welcome home, king.

Speed Crew Pulls the Party Into the Pitstop on Console, PC January 31, 2024

A new game mode provides fresh ways to frantically fix cars

UKRAINE – Dec. 11, 2023 – Speed Crew, the high-octane party game from the AAA veterans at Ukrainian publisher Wild Fields, races onto PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam with the new Dominion Mode starting Monday, Jan. 31, 2024.

The race is on! Join a family of misfit mechanics as they compete against their long-time rivals in small garages, dirt roads, torn up junk yards, and more across different generations. Wield sledge hammers, wrenches, plungers as a pit crew, and use workbenches to replace, repair, and refuel everything from rally cars to drag racers. Play solo or cooperatively with up to three other mechanics thanks to crossplay between platforms.

Quickly coordinate to complete each task as efficiently as possible. Diagnose the situation and plan the best course of action, fixing wrecked cars to get them back on track. Each event unveils new challenges and obstacles to overcome, including pouring rain and lightning strikes, conveyor belts zipping away essential objects, and even canals full of floating boxes to navigate around. Successful runs unlock new characters, new costumes, and higher sponsor levels.

Compete in the classic Campaign Mode, working together to beat the other pit crews to rise to the top of the leaderboards. Go head-to-head against a group of mechanics in Dominion Mode. Take on the role of the Dominion saboteur, using tools and power ups to disrupt the flow of car repairs by stunning players, disabling equipment, rigging the track, and more. Endure the attacks of the maniacal mechanic, or fight back by landing blows and stunning them in their tracks.

“We noticed a lack of cooperative gaming options for groups of friends and family members to positively interact with one another,” said Daniel Poludyonny, General Manager, Wild Fields. “Speed Crew is meant to bring all types of gamers together regardless of skill level, and that is what we hope to accomplish.”

Speed Crew is currently available on Nintendo Switch for $19.99/€19.99, and localized in text for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, and Ukrainian.

For more information on Speed Crew, visit Wild Fields’ official website, wishlist on Steam, follow the studio on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and join the community on Discord

Unleash the might of Yndrasta and the destructive power of Gobsprakk on the realm of Ghur in new DLC for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, available now.

Players who have purchased the Ultimate Edition will receive both DLC heroes to lead their Stormcast Eternals and Orruk Kruleboyz armies.

Today, Frontier Developments (‘Frontier’) invite players of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin to add powerful new heroes to their arsenal with the launch of two Hero DLC. The all-powerful Stormcast Eternals champion Yndrasta, The Celestial Spear and the cunning Orruk Kruleboyz shaman Gobsprakk, The Mouth of Mork, are available from today for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation® 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Each Hero DLC will also be available separately for £3.99/$4.99/€4.99, as well as part of a bundle for £6.99/$8.99/€8.99.

Both pieces of DLC introduce a new playable Age of Sigmar hero, who can be rotated into the army loadout in place of either the Stormcast Eternals Lord-Celestant, or the Orruk Kruleboyz Killaboss on Gnashtoof. These heroes can be used in Skirmish, Multiplayer and Conquest Mode, introducing new strategic options for both factions as they vie for control of the Realm of Beasts.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin – Yndrasta, The Celestial Spear. Yndrasta’s passive ability ‘Dazzling Radiance’ provides immediate healing and a movement speed bonus to nearby allies after using an ability, whilst ‘Huntress Charge’ propels her to the skies before slamming into foes, dealing damage and stunning any who are caught in the fray. Her legendary spear, Thengavar, can be thrown to a location – dealing immediate damage as well as summoning Sigmar’s fury to increase the melee speed of allies in the area.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin – Gobsprakk, The Mouth of Mork introduces the Orruk Kruleboyz first flying unit, Gobsprakk, capable of unleashing terror from atop his Corpse-Rippa Vulcha, Killabeak. His passive ability ‘Mouth of Mork’ provides allies with improved movement and melee speed, reduced cooldowns as long as Gobsprakk isn’t in combat. Meanwhile the ‘Rippa Screech’ active ability unleashes the power of his mount, aiming a cone of damage at foes and an AoE effect beneath him, revealing, silencing and damaging enemies over time.

These powerful new heroes can also be posed in dioramas built in Realms of Ruin’s extensive Map Editor, where players can sculpt their own shareable gameplay maps and create scenes showing the full ferocity of battle.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin is available digitally for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation® 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Alongside the Ultimate Edition, players can purchase the Standard Edition for a suggested retail price of £49.99/$59.99/€59.99 and the Deluxe Edition for £59.99/$69.99/€69.99. The physical edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, meanwhile, will release on 27th February 2024 for PlayStation® 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and will include both Hero DLCs.

Both Hero DLCs are bundled with the Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin – Ultimate Edition, which has a suggested retail price of £64.99/$74.99/€74.99. Each Hero DLC will also be available separately for £3.99/$4.99/€4.99, as well as part of a bundle for £6.99/$8.99/€8.99, and will require a copy of the base game to play.

And finally, ATLUS have shared new story and character details for Metaphor: ReFantazio.

  • Story
    • Our story takes place in The United Kingdom of Euchronia, where the assassination of the king brings chaos and unrest to the land. Then, one fateful day, a magic known only to the king called the Royal Magic is invoked, and the world becomes embroiled in a royal tournament for the throne. In the midst of this, the protagonist, together with his partner, the fairy Galica, must find a way to break the curse that has been placed on the prince that the kingdom believes to be dead. To do so, they depart on a journey across the vast land. They will discover that in order to achieve their goal, they must participate in the tournament for the throne, and this great task shall require them to ally with many friends and followers of the various tribes inhabiting the world.
  • Protagonist
    • Together with the fairy, Galica, he embarks on a journey to lift the deadly curse placed on his childhood friend, the prince of Euchronia. He is a boy of the elda tribe, branded as a “tainted” people by the state religion who believe they have inherited dangerous and heretical magic. Being so rare among the populous, they are detested and discriminated against throughout the kingdom.”
  • Gallica
  • Not only a travelling companion, Gallica is the guide who helps the protagonist carry out his mission to save the prince. Although she is too small to participate in battles, her knowledge of magic and ability to sense magla is superior to the protagonist due to her fairy nature. She doesn’t mince words, but she is a reassuring ally on his journey.
  • Strohl
  • He is a young man of the clemar tribe who meets the protagonist in the recruitment centre for the State Army. A smart young man with a strong sense of justice, he hails from a noble family. And yet, it seems his circumstances are complicated, as it is rare for a noble to enlist in the army alongside commoners.
  • Hulkenberg
  • A knight of the roussainte tribe and former member of the royal family’s Kingsguard who served by the prince’s side. Despite her young age, she excelled in the use of various weaponry and was assigned to the personal guard of the prince. But when the prince was attacked, she failed to protect him and set out to wander, carrying the stigma of this failure in her heart.
  • Heismay
  • A former knight of the eugief tribe. He has acute perception compared to most others, due in part to the eugief trait of being sensitive to sound. With an appearance that differs greatly from other tribes, it’s not uncommon for eugiefs to be discriminated against—and it seems Heismay is no exception, his past his own burden to bear.
