Overview:
With a series with as many ups and downs as Durarara!! you begin to embrace the insanity of the series, without a second thought. For an anime that begun simply telling the tale of the Ikebukuro night-life, for it to come to where it has is quite a feat. Whether it’s conclusion is satisfying is another thing altogether. With the final confrontation imminent, does Durarara!! come out winning or does it fall short of the grandeur it boasted early on?

Story:
All in all, Durarara!! is about one thing, a place called Ikebukuro. Durarara!! slowly reveals more and more of the city in a way that has not been seen before, definitely not in this way. It is so vividly conveyed, that the city itself takes on it’s own personality. The story follows the inter-locking events that tie the characters to the city and eachother and details each of them dissolve into the harsh darkness of the Ikebukuro night.

The world of Durarara!! is harsh, sometimes brutal and most of all insane. With supernatural creatures such as a Dullahan roaming the streets you’d be hard pressed to find a series which aims for realism, yet features as much wild fantasy as this.

Smoking kills… by decapitation?

As you’d imagine, with this being the final part of the Durarara!! story, things begin to spiral to an end, to somewhat satisfying results. Albeit the thirst for a sequel simply cries out in the Ikebukuro night to be quenched, it seems unlikely as of now. However the way the series concludes there is definitely room for a continuation.

The story flowed quite well and every character got their own moment of glory, however some of the plot-twists may have been laid on a little too thin, but it wasn’t enough to derail the story in any significant way.

I won’t go into a great deal of detail upon the ins and outs of the story line as by this point the series is well and truly into the tail-end of things and to do so would be difficult to do without spoiling the fun for those new to the series. What I can say though is that everything the series has been building up to over the past 17 episodes comes to a conclusion in the collection and ties up many of the loose ends before the final minutes roll. Sadly it’s not entirely satisfying in it’s execution which lacks the power and gravity that I had come to expect from the series. I did however appreciate it for what it was and enjoyed it none-the-less.

It’s alright, you’ll find someone soon. I’ve got no head and I pick up.

Characters:
Each character hit the right notes in this final collection, with the obvious stand-outs being Mikado, Kida and Anri. Each of them bore a large ammount of gravity of the story and were voiced brilliantly in both Japanese and English dubs.

That is not all though, each of the cast had their moment to shine and didn’t let the final credits roll without leaving their mark on the series. There wasn’t a disappointing performance of the bunch and all of the main and secondary cast where brought to life with ease.

Although not officially a character per say I think it is interesting to discuss, the city of Ikebukuro. Perhaps the unsung main character of the series. Ikebukuro as I mentioned previously, is conveyed as much more than a city, it is an entity unto itself. Rarely is it seen that a location has been so full of life and character than Ikebukuro. From the dark alley’s to the brightly lit shopping districts, to the gang’s who consider it their stomping ground, Ikebukuro is what ties all of these characters together and that is what makes it without a doubt one of the best characters in Durarara!! whether Ikebukuro is acknowledged as a character or not.

And they were all yellow.

Artwork:
The artwork and animation for this series is a sight to behold, with such vivid and beautiful colours and art direction, Durarara!! has an appearance that resonates with the viewer long after they have finished watching. The style in itself is so dark and gloomy, yet it is so lifely and illuminated. That juxtaposition tells us simply everything we need to know about Durarara!! It is a series about the faint glimmer of life within a dark place and that lifes attempt to illuminate the dark.

Not only that but the character designs are excellent, with each character being very distinctive and some even moving into the domain of the iconic (Celty). Also the animation is fluid and makes full use of the animaters budget with great action scenes and even the simplest of character gestures has had a great deal of effort put into the animation. All in all it is a brilliant job from the art and animation department.

Audio:
As was the case with the 2 previous volumes, the soundtrack is absolutely awe inspiring. From the jazzy little tunes popping along as the characters interact to the fast paced romp during the action sequences, the soundtrack is simply brilliant. The opening and ending themes are also well suited to the series and convey the perfect mood for what is conspiring in the series as well as being generally good songs.

The voice work on both audio tracks was equally as good, with the English dub actors being  particularly good in their respective roles. I’m not sure which I prefer more but for this review, I gave both a try and tended to enjoy the English voice actors a little bit better, particularly Simon’s who does a good job with his accent which I think didn’t come across nearly as well in the original Japanese track. It was a good job all in all for both tracks though.

Special Features:
As usual with Siren Visual we are privy to a fairy nice slip-case and the usual trailers for their other releases. Besides that there is nothing else in the way of extras besides a bonus episode which essentially isn’t really a special feature but still worth mentioning. However there isn’t much else there, which is always a disappointing part of SirenVisual releases. However the slip-case is nice enough that I’m not greatly bothered by the lack on any other features, though I know many will be.

This wasn’t too bad of special feature though…

Conclusion:
In closing, Durarara!! Part 3 is a brilliant finale to an overall brilliant series. With all the pieces falling into place and the story concluding there is little else left to be desired from this series aside from a sequel. I personally recommend this series to fans of Baccano (which is from the same creators), as well as fans of the genre in general.

I give Durarara!! Part 3:

Haruhi Suzumiya AniPoke App released free to US iTunes Appstore

If you have been concerned over the lack of legitimate anime applications for your iPhone then you may find the following news somewhat pleasing. Kodakawa Shoten has released three apps to the United States iPhone App Store that were inspired by Haruhi Suzumiya.

The apps released were Haruhi’s Anipoke (Haruhi Suzumiya), Mikuru’s AniPoke (Mikuru Asahina) and a Nagato’s AniPoke (Yuki Nagato). Now only the Haruhi’s Anipoke is currently free at the moment as the other two AniPoke apps cost $.99 at the moment or will cost $3.99 after they go off of sale on August 31st.

The apps themselves will feature an alarm clock that users can set, then be woken up or alerted when said time has arrived by the character that they purchased. The app itself is still in Japanese which means that the menu is in Japanese and the characters also still speak Japanese with no English subtitles. The characters have a limited amount of dialogue which can be unlocked and played whenever they want to. Also the character’s eyes will follow your finger around on the screen. You can pick up the Haruhi Anipoke here. If you choose to buy Mikiru or Nagato you can do so here and here.

Namco Bandai suing over Witcher 2 European publishing change

Apparently Namco Bandai is suing the parent company of CD Projekt Red, Optimus SA, over the publishing rights on European consoles for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The claim of for this lawsuit states that Optimus failed to meet the commitment they made with Namco Bandai when they handed the distribution rights of the Xbox 360 version of the game over to THQ in parts of Europe.

Namco Bandai owns the European distribution section of Atari after they bought it in 2009. Optimus SA on the other hand says that they only agreed to a deal with Namco over the PC version of the game and had not said anything about a console release, leaving them free to choose their distributor. Additionally Namco Bandai says that CD Projekt Red violated their agreement with the company when they removed the DRM off of all versions of The Witcher 2.

Because of this, Namco is withholding $1.8 million in payment to the company and this fact doesn’t bother Optimus SA president Adam Kicinski one bit. According to a quote obtained by Gamepur </strong>Adam said “Our liquidity situation is very good. Therefore, the lack of a few million does not have any leverage on current activities. Withholding of payments means only that for some time, our partner will have to give us the money with interest.” From this statement it seems that Optimus SA believes that they will have no trouble winning the case, with Adam going on to say that Optimus will most likely win the case in court and “then the loser will pay for our lawyers.”

Nintendo being sued over 3DS screen technology

Nintendo may have been the first company to make their glasses free 3D technology available to the widespread public in the form of the 3DS, but they may not have been the first ones to actually come up with the technology. Instead a company known as Tomita Technologies has filed a patent suit against Nintendo saying that the 3DS’ stereoscopic display violates their patent.

According to Patent Arcade, Tomita’s patent is for “technology relating to displaying stereoscopic images on-screen for viewing with the naked eye, i.e., without utilizing glasses or other devices.” This patent was issued in 2008 by the government and can be viewed here. The company’s complaint against Nintendo did not go into detail as to how Nintendo violated their copyright. We’ll keep you updated as to whether or not this lawsuit will move forward or be dropped.

Burnout Crash! announced for Fall release on XBLA and PSN

We’ve heard about Burnout Crash so often through various ratings boards that it came as a bit of a surprise that EA and Criterion Games waited so long to announce the downloadable racing title. Today however they broke their silence and have officially announced that Burnout Crash! will be released on the XBLA and PSN in the Fall of this year.

The game will be a top-down racer and will be based off of other Burnout games’ Crash mode which will reward the player for “causing traffic chaos by crashing into cars, triggering explosions and destroying everything in sight” which makes it sound like everything a Burnout fan would love. Those who purchase the title on the XBLA will also have the ability to play the game with either their controller or with their Kinect to control the action. No price has been announced at the time for the title, though you can catch a teaser below.

Players will be able to (finally) venture into new areas such as a Grey Warden prison, fight new creatures as well as Darkspawn, collect a new class specific weapon and even come face to face with some ancient horror that has yet to be described. The DLC will cost $10 on the PlayStation 3, PC and Mac and 800 MSP on the Xbox 360.

Nyko’s Kinect zoom releasing August 23rd; Microsoft warns against it

You may not have a very large living room, but still want to own a Kinect. Then you are in luck, maybe. Nyko announced recently that they will be bringing their Zoom peripheral for the Kinect out on August 23rd and it will only cost $29.99. The Nyko Zoom peripheral is said to allow players to use up to “40% less space” to play their favorite Kinect titles.

Now Microsoft has come out to rain on Nyko’s parade a little bit because they think that the peripheral will hurt their little peripheral. A spokesperson came out today to say to CVG that the “Kinect has been tested for performance, accuracy and environmental conditions thoroughly. Any modification can impact the overall performance of Kinect.”

Could it make the Kinect a bit less accurate than it can be at times? During E3 it seemed to perform well enough for those in attendance, including myself. So whether or not this is Microsoft forewarning those about a faulty product, or just making sure they won’t be the target of any backlash in the future is currently unseen.

Civilization World launched on Facebook

If you work in an office on a computer, you may want to just hand in your resignation to your boss right now because your productivity is probably going to drop to a crawl. The reason for this is because Civilization is now on Facebook in the form of Civilization World. Just like any good Facebook game, it is entirely free to play but you can also purchase extra things of course.

Sid Meier chimed in about his latest time eating creation saying “Our team set out to create an exciting Civilization game for Facebook where for the first time, players can join with their friends to build a powerful empire and rule the world. Civilization World is a fun and engaging game that both fans of the series and fans of Facebook games will find immediately addictive, and we look forward to adding to the experience as the game continues to evolve in this dynamic new gaming world.”

Addictive and Facebook go right alongside one another, just ask the very rich Zynga at the moment how well you can profit off of people’s addictive natures. You can add the Facebook app into your list of games to play and waste time here.
