Overview:
The zombie genre has seen it’s fair share of bad endeavours and likewise a fair share of good endeveavours. There are many conflicting opinions on what causes the bad to be bad and the good to be good. Some say that zombies are rarely played as scary anymore. Something I am inclined to agree with, even though humourous zombies have never been too big a problem with me (as long as it’s actually funny). High School of the Dead, leans towards the prior, going for flat out horror. That’s not to say humour isn’t present, it is just drawn from other sources. But how does this formula work for High School of the Dead? Does it survive and thrive or become another one of the brainless masses?

Story:
High School of the Dead has a simple plot, not much in way of explaination is given, but it’s better that way. As you’d imagine this is a zombie anime. A good one at that.

We are dropped onto the roof of a zombie-infested high school and watch as three students fight off the horde to get to higher ground. That is all the explaination required to kick things into motion. You find in this genre that often, the cause 0f the zombification is explained early on to give the viewer clarification of how things got that way. That is the really wrong way to go about doing zombies. Zombies are irrational, mindless creatures. The second you explain how they became that way, it takes away their fear factor. How does it do this you ask? Well there is a quote from Stephen King that goes a little like “Fear is in the unknown”.

That is something I like to match up with a lot of supposedly horror based entertainment. Because it is probably the most truthful statement when concerning horror. The second you understand, you subconsciously begin to think of ways these horrors can be defeated or escaped from at the very least. When it is unknown, there is no shred of an idea of defeating of escaping the horror, it’s incomprehensible. High School of the Dead understands this concept and rolls with it. It ramps up the horror and despair with each and every episode.

Amidst all of this horror, lies sex. Sex or sex appeal seems to always go hand in hand with zombies. High School of the Dead while laying on some heavy fan-service does provide some insight with it. Which is both profound and depressing. The characters have been faced with the very fact that their lives as they knew them are over, now they are nothing but animals, fighting to survive against their hunters. Like animals, they are impulsive, survivalists, living on instinct.

As they try to cling to any shred of their humanity they sink deeper and deeper into their animalistic desires. Each episode becoming more and more like rabbits hunted by foxes. Pushed into a corner by their most basic of instincts is the instinct to reproduce, to continue their line even if they die doing so. This instinct is apparent in all the characters, however never openly stated. Never before has fan-service been utilised in a both effective way, not to mention a lot of it is pretty funny.

Overall High School of the Dead is an unexpectedly profound and much deeper than it’s surface would lead you to believe. Sadly the story ends not truly concluded, begging for a second season. With the popularity of this series, I think a second season is a given and shouldn’t be too far off. Only time shall tell.

Characters:

The cast in High School of the Dead is both simultaneously stereotypical and deep. The level fo depth given to these characters is astounding. Although on the surface they appear to be common anime stereotypes, as the series progresses and they become more and more like animals, the characters shine true.

It is perhaps the most refreshingly honest portrayal of characters in anime in a very long time. Their hopes and dreams have all been ultimately crushed and all they have left is each other. As the series dives deeper and deeper into the breaking of these people, we witness some of the most heart-shattering and depressing character development in years. It’s truly a sad case when you start out with well-adjusted students at a decent enough school and by the time the series wraps up they have become nothing but blood-drenched beasts desperately clawing away clinging to their life and humanity, all the while causing themselves to lose sight of the very thing they are trying to cling on to.

Artwork:
The art and animation on display here is simply superb, with a lot of brilliantly designs scenes. The first scene on the rooftop is easily one of the most memorable opening scenes of anime I have seen in a very long time.

The animation is incredibly fluid and never static. Which is exactly what I look for when watching anime, static animation can be incredibly jarring and for a series with as much action as this, it was a neccessity to be this animated.

All in all it was a excellent job from the art department, with some jaw-dropping animation and artwork on display that I won’t soon forget.

Audio:
Both audio tracks of High School of the Dead are quite well done. The Japanese audio is faultless and the English dub from Sentai Filmworks is a great adaptation with each actor portraying their character very well, whilst retaining the emotion of the original cast.

The soundtrack is exciting and adrenaline-fueled, never missing a beat, giving a perfect mood-setter for the action unfolding. When a soundtrack perfectly compliments what is occuring on screen, you know it has succeeded.

Special Features:
Unfortunately there was next to no special features on this collection from Madman, which is really disappointing consider their track record for amazing special features usually packaged in which their full season collections. This time around there is nothing but trailers, textless openings and endings and a reversible cover. While this all may be nice, it is really below the expectations Madman has set themselves. Whether this fault lies with Sentai or Madman is not apparent. However unfortunately it just does not cut the zombie in terms of special features.

Conclusion:
In closing, High School of the Dead was a surprisingly insightful series about the changes we go through when faced with overwhelming despair. If you are looking for a fun show with zombies, this is a good anime for you. If you are looking for some fan-service, this is a good anime for you. If you are looking for an anime that is both exciting, fun and underneath it all, profound, then this is a good anime for you. I wholeheartedly recommend High School of the Dead.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 to have reversable cover art

When two large universes collide, it only makes sense that the battle is going to be extremely hectic. But how about when two great artists collide? Well it is going to be your decision to pick which side you want when you purchase Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 because the cover art on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version will be reversible.

On one side of the boxart, which is the default, is art drawn by Capcom illustrator Shinkiro and the other side is featuring a comic book style piece drawn by Mark Brooks. You can see both full high-resolution images below. Which one of these cover arts would you prefer? It is interesting to see this decision to incorporate a reversible cover art, hopefully other companies will adopt this practice as well.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 TGS trailer shows old Snow and grown up Hope in action

Yesterday at Tokyo Game Show Square Enix revealed a rather detailed trailer which shows off a lot of new information about Final Fantasy XIII-2. Well at least a bit more information about the characters. Yesterday we found two images that revealed what Snow and Hope would look like in the upcoming game, and this trailer shows them not only more extensively but also in some cutscenes.

Besides the older looking Snow and Hope we also have found out the name of the other character in the game’s logo. We already knew about Lightning, but apparently the other character’s name is Kaias a person who is unable to die. There was also some footage shown of a blonde female character named Yuru, however more information about her was not revealed at this time. Check out the video below.

Yakuza Black Panther 2 given first trailer at TGS

After Yakuza Black Panther 2 was announced, not much information was actually given about the title. That is until Tokyo Game Show, where today there was a four minute trailer released which provides plenty of details about the game’s storyline including how Tatsuya ended up in Osaka. Watch the video below yourself, though a rough understanding of Japanese is required to understand what they are saying.

Besides Tatsuya, there will be four playable characters that are entirely new to the Yakuza franchise which were not detailed at the time. However Sega did announce the a few of the game’s Japanese voice cast, so perhaps some of the characters shown on the Yakuza official site will be the other playable characters besides Tatsuya. What do you think? Does this have a chance to be localized like other Yakuza titles have been?

Shinobido 2 TGS trailer introduces characters and stealth

When someone thinks of a ninja what is the first thing they think of? Well besides the black ninja outfit of course, they most likely are thinking of a silent killer able to glide through the air which is pretty much what the main character in Shinobido 2 does in the trailer released today for Tokyo Game Show.

Shinobido 2 is being developed by Acquire for the PlayStation Vita and will let players form alliances with different factions and branch out the story in different ways depending on who they ally with. The game is going to be localized in Europe at the moment by Namco Bandai, but unfortunately no news has been mentioned about a North American release. C’mon Namco, don’t be like Nintendo… Either way check out the trailer below!

Disgaea 3 Return given Tokyo Game Show trailer

It wouldn’t be a PlayStation platform if Nippon Ichi Software didn’t grace it with a Disgaea title. But no worries, the PlayStation Vita is going to be receiving a port of Disgaea 3, which is going to be called Disgaea 3 Return. Better yet, the game is also going to be a launch title when the Vita is released on December 17th in Japan.

Could this perhaps mean that Disgaea 3 Return is going to be a launch title when the Vita comes out in North America? Only time will tell, though if it does then this may just be a system seller for me. Check out the video below where you can see the four new scenarios described, each with a different lead character.

RAGE TV spot graces the internet

Sure if you were watching the ESPN college football game between Michigan and Notre Dame last Saturday then you have probably seen this trailer already, however the rest of the world hasn’t, let alone those who have no interest in college football. Well Bethesda and id Software have you covered because today they uploaded the new RAGE TV advertisement.

As you can see below the commercial is full of action and praises from various media companies across the board. If you listen closely you can also hear the music of A Perfect Circle as they perform their song titled “COUNTING BODIES LIKE SHEEP TO THE RHYTHM OF THE WAR DRUMS.” Does that commercial get you hyped up more than you already were about RAGE when it releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on October 4th?

Gravity Daze TGS trailer released alongside playthrough by Keiichiro Sotoyama

Tokyo Game Show kicked off yesterday and of course there were tons of trailers for different PlayStation Vita games but none of those games had a more stylized look than Gravity Daze. As you can see in the trailer released today, Gravity Daze is an extremely unique looking title that is being created by Siren’s Keeichiro Sotoyama.

Also released was a video of Siren creator Keiichiro Sotoyama doing a small playthrough of the game and showing off a number of the titles features. Plus it is subtitled in English so we’ll actually know what is going on! This game was first shown off back when the PlayStation Vita was revealed and was actually the title I was most interested in during the announcement. Let’s hope that this game makes it overseas to the West as its unique look is certainly a welcome sight.

Anyway, check out Day 1 Pics from the show.  Focus today went to all the booths and of course the amazing booth babes that always seem to impress each and every year.

Let us know what booth you liked the most and also who the best dressed booth babe is at the show.  (I say the Alien Ware Babes are probably one of the best we’ve had in a while)

Anyway enjoy the pics. (remember there is mulitple pics per page)
