Overview

Who doesn’t want to take their movies with them wherever they go? It’s perfect for that long trip, the early morning commute, the family get togethers during which you spend hiding in your room… Who doesn’t want to be able to just whip out your handy phone, or tablet, and have a whole range of movies at your fingertips ready to wile away the hours.

Content

There is a huge range of movies in the iTunes Store that you can download, as well as a preorder option to get movies as soon as they come out. This isn’t just for new releases, but older movies that are being made available to the iTunes Store retroactively.

The movie I tried out on the Plays Everywhere app, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was part of a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo and downloaded and transferred at a fast enough rate. Once it has transferred over you can access it through the ‘Videos’ app that already exists on your device, if you have an iOS device, as the digital copies are accessed and downloaded through iTunes, so no extra downloads of an app is necessary for iOS devices. Android is a different story though, and does have an app for you to download.

Unfortunately there aren’t really any extras for you to access through the Plays Anywhere App, simply the movie and an advertisement for related soundtrack material (available through iTunes of course). The quality of the video is as you would expect, in high definition, and it never skipped a beat on my iPad, running smoothly and sleekly. It really is a great alternative and I didn’t find myself yearning for the bigger laptop screen too much. Plus, with its thin design it was far more portable. Watching off an iPhone or an Android phone might be a bit of a waste, for those of you who like watching films in a format larger than your palm, but if your situation does call for it, then it will certainly hold up and be superior to trying to stream through Youtube. I mean, whaaat, that’s illegall! Whaaaat?

There aren’t many formats to choose from, either full screen or wide screen, and it’s really up to personal preference which one you pick. The movie does flip as you rotate the screen, so it is dependent on your preference as to which one is better.

There are chapters to choose from, if you ever want to watch a certain part of the movie, or skip ahead, so never fear. Although this is the only remotely special feature, it is still a useful one, and one which they could have skipped but chose not to.

Visuals

The visuals are, as I said before, top notch. There were only a few moments that it felt a bit rougher than you’d expect from a DVD, and those were few and far between. In widescreen mode the movie looked great, especially with a movie like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where the animations and fine details of expression are important factors (especially considering the emotion behind an ape expression). Plays Everywhere handled it brilliantly, although I would suggest staying away from Fullscreen mode, because that zooms into the video and leaves it looking more blurry than what is comfortable.

Audio

Considering the limitations of the device, the sound is awesome. It isn’t surprising really, given that whatever device you’re using, it’s probably designed to have good audio output, but still. While it ain’t no fancy surround sound, it more than does the job and isn’t something you’ll be cringing at.

Overall

Plays Everywhere is the next step in movie watching, and it’s definitely bound to spread in the future. So do yourselves a favour and jump on the bandwagon quick so you can say you totally used Plays Everywhere before it became ‘mainstream’. And also so that you can watch some damn good quality movies on the go super easily, because who wants to play that fifty-millionth game of Fruit Ninja when you can instead watch the new movie you’ve been dying to watch but haven’t had the time to sit down and do it?

The trailer gives players a look at what exclusive content they can unlock for both Reckoning and Mass Effect 3, if they were to download both game’s demos next week. Both demos give players armour and items based upon the Reckoning and Mass Effect 3 which will become available for each corresponding game upon their launch.

Army Corps of Hell Characters and Customization Trailer

One of the PS Vita’s many launch titles is Square Enix’s Army Corps of Hell: a wonderfully mad cap looking game that looks like Pikmin fell into the depths of the underworld and grabbed itself some death metal on the way down.

A new trailer has just been released to give you a rundown of all the characters and options that will be available to you – the King of Hell – when trying to reclaim your kingdom. Building an army of goblins is no easy feat, and Army Corps of Hell comes complete with three different classes of henchmen – Soldiers, Magi and Spearmen. Each class will have it’s own unique attacks and strategies to take on the demonic hordes that stand in the way of the King.

So what about the customization? Well that’s for the main man himself, who along with his goblin minions can be upgraded with some of the 100 different weapons and pieces of armor that players will be able to forge.

Check out the trailer below.

Trine 2 Special Edition Soundtrack Released

0

If you’re a big fan of Trine 2 or fancy yourself a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to game soundtracks, Frozenbyte have just the thing for you. Following on from the release of Trine 2 comes the special edition soundtrack. Composed by Ari Pulkkinen (if you’re one of the millions of Angry Birds players out there you’ll know his work, or perhaps from Super Stardust HD) it can be downloaded from iTunes or the composer’s own website: www.aritunes.com

The $11.99 download includes all 21 tracks from the game and two brand new versions recorded with the Brandenburg State Orchestra. The Steam Special Edition of Trine 2 also comes complete with the soundtrack, but misses out on the two bonus recordings.

The man himself had this to say about the release:

“Finally!”, said composer Ari Pulkkinen. “I’m very proud of the music for Trine and Trine 2; the beautiful and heartwarming fantasy world of Trine really inspired me to compose these lively soundtracks, and I’m really glad they can now reach a wider audience as separate albums.

For this special moment I also wanted to create orchestrated versions of the Trine 2 Main Theme and the Trailer Theme, and they sound absolutely fantastic!”

This is the first iTunes release for both Frozenbyte and the composer,so make sure and check out the Main Theme for Trine 2 in the video below for a taster of what’s on offer.

Adele overtakes Modern Warfare 3 in the U.K.

Here is some surprising news. In a recent chart by ERA (via MCV), it was revealed that singer Adele sold more of her album “21” than than Modern Warfare 3 sold altogether in the U.K. This is quite a feat for the young artist who has made quite a name for herself over the past year and if anything could topple COD’s reign, it is a bit pleasing to see that Adele was the victor.

Ranked under Modern Warfare 3’s 2nd place position is Fifa 12, Battlefield 3, Zumba Fitness, and Skyrim. Of course this chart (which can be seen below) represents the entertainment industry as a whole, and there is no doubt that COD raked in the most cash for the region. I however still find it a bit sad that “Paul” would be anywhere above The Elder Scrolls on any list.

1. 21 – Adele – 3,924,985 – Album
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 2,814,609 – Game
3. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows – Part 1 – 2,532,551 – Video
4. FIFA 12 – 2,193,302 – Game
5. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 – 2,147,606 – Video

7. The King’s Speech – 1,882,175 – Video
8. Christmas – Michael Buble – 1,349,195 – Album

A Wise Tortoise will be your guide in Dragon Quest X

The Dragon Quest series is known for it’s off-beat and charming cast of characters, and Dragon Quest X is looking to keep that trend going. Starting out, the player meets up with a tortoise deity by the name of Kame-sama in the human ran Etene Village.

Kame-Same soon tells the inhabitants that the main hero is heaven-sent, and then leads you to the statues that represent the five tribes in Dragon Quest X. Yes, by the looks of it, this is where the game will start and as usual, this title looks to have quite an interesting beginning. We are still a ways off from DQX’s official release, but stay tuned as once more information rises, we will be sure to keep you covered.

Get a Behind the Scenes look at Wakfu…

Ankama’s freemium MMO Wakfu is gearing up for a release in February, and to hold you over, a new developer diary has been released to give us all a better look at what’s inside. This clip has Game Designer “Azael” and Community Manager “Zidrune” of Ankama give a run-down on the freedom players will be given in this anticipated title.

From the economy system to the creation of kamas (Wakfu’s currency system), there is quite a bit explained in the clip if you don’t mind reading through some subtitles. At the moment, I am rather impressed with the easy-on-the-eyes art style presented though, as it seems like a brilliant move to go with a timeless design that is sure to run great on all PCs. Check out the video in full below, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for Wakfu when it launches next month.
