Stanley Technician for iPhone 4/4s Review

Stanley Technician iPhone 4/4s Case by Incipio
Manufacturer: Incipio
Platform: iPhone 4, iPhone 4s
Price: $39.99 Buy it Here

The Stanley Technician is a yellow and black semi-rigid case constructed from TPU and polycarbonate. Although branded by the famous tool manufacturer, the case is actually manufactured by Incipio. The Technician comes with a belt clip holster, a screen protector, and a cleaning cloth.

Installing the Stanley Technician is literally a snap. Although it is made out of two different materials, the case comes in one single piece. Simple snap the phone into the Technician and it is ready to go. The fit is actually very tight and will require quite a bit of force to pull the phone out of the case.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am a big fan of TPU. It is a semi-rigid material that provides a bit better drop resistance than traditional polycarbonate. Unlike most silicone or rubber used in iPhone cases, TPU does not stick to pockets or collects lint because the finish behaves more like plastic. Although the polycarbonate pieces on the case seem a little unnecessary, it gives the Technician a little extra rigidity and provides a nice textural and visual flair. One of the problems with the polycarbonate is that it is not as scratch resistant as the TPU used in the case. The bright colour seems to hide the scratches well though. Unfortunately, the iPhone 4/4s version only comes in black and Stanley yellow. So those looking for something a little less eye catching will have to look elsewhere.

The Stanley Technician is a very good size. It only adds roughly 6 millimeters to the thickness of the iPhone 4 and feels very comfortable in the hand. The yellow polycarbonate tends to be very slippery but there is enough TPU material on the sides of the case to get a good grip on the case.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A very generous lip on the front case to keep the iPhone screen off gritty surfaces that can potentially scratch the screen.  The lip extends rather high compared to most cases, which makes sense as it is designed for construction work sites and other smartphone dangerous areas. I noticed that the lip does not play well with screen protectors. Curiously enough, this includes the screen protector bundled with the Technician. The lip of the case rests tightly against the phone and most screen protectors are a little larger than the uncovered area of the screen. Installing the case immediately causes screen protectors to bubble a little. In addition, the sides of the case is a little loose. Squeezing the sides of the case causes the lip to move inwards which causes more bubbles in the screen protector. I found only solution around this problem was to trim the screen protector in areas that had particular problems with bubbling.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Technician has several holes cut out for the camera, headphone jack, vibration switch, speaker, microphone, and 30-pin dock connector. The camera hole is generously sized and is surrounded with a black ring that prevents any glare or interference when the flash is used. The vibration switch is large enough to be compatible with all versions of the iPhone 4 and 4s. The 30-pin dock connector hole will work with most cables. However, the case is not dock compatible as the case is rather thick. The headphone jack cut out is generously sized. I consider the stock Shure se215 cable to be the thickest of my collection and it was unable to fit through the Technician’s hole. Interestingly enough, my next largest plug, the AKG Q701, was able fit with a little bit of room left. All but the largest of headphone plugs will have no problem fitting the Technician.

The buttons on the Stanley Technician are excellent. They are well pronounced and easy to use with a lightly gloved hand. The TPU add a little more resistance compared to the naked buttons or a silicone material but only require a reasonable amount of force. Only having problems with mild arthritis or similar conditions should have problems using the buttons.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A clip on holster is included with the case. The holster is a little fussy for me. When the case is inserted with the screen facing inwards, the fit is a little loose. This is not a problem when the holster is seated vertically, but if the holster is twisted horizontally, than bending forward can easily cause the phone to come tumbling out of the holster. When the screen is facing outwards, the phone needs a bit of force to slide in and out, but stays securely in place. Considering the phone is designed for harsher conditions, designing a holster that requires the exposed portion of the phone to be facing outwards seems a little odd to me. All the promotional videos and pictures of the Stanley Technician shows the holsters being clipped vertically to the outside of the pants pocket. If this is supposed to be the correct method of carry, I have to wonder why it is possible to rotate the clip to the case can be positioned horizontally.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Stanley Technician is an excellent case. It has a few flaws and a couple of strange quirks. Its incompatibility with screen protectors is annoying. Unless the owner modifies the screen protector, it will incessantly bubble the screen protector and potentially cause the screen protector to off the screen completely from a rough removal from a pocket. The holster is designed strangely. It is perfectly usable when aligned vertically, but in a horizontal configuration, the phone must be inserted screen outwards for the phone to stay in the holster. When using the holster in the clipped horizontally to the belt, phone owners much decide if they would rather risk the phone falling out of the holster or expose the screen to scratches. On the other hand, the Stanley Technician is a well sized case that has a bit of drop protection from the TPU material. The installation is breeze. For $39.99, the case is starting to bump into the overpriced zone for a case of its materials and pack-ins.

Dream Chaser Review

Dream Chaser
Developer: We.R.Play
Publisher: Chillingo
Platform: iPad (Reviewed), iPhone, iPod Touch
Release Date: April 4th, 2013
Price: $0.99 Buy it Here

Overview

Dream Chaser is a new take on the old endless runner genre by adding a story component to the game and wrapping things up in pretty graphics. Two modes are available, an endless runner mode and a story mode.

Story

The story stars a young night spirit named Nito. He is a little rebellious but understands that Idana, the daughter of the God of Dreams, has assigned him to a very important task. The Tower of Dreams has been destroyed, the two Gemini crystals that power it have been stolen, and the crystals’ four guardians have ran off. Nito must use his armour to survive the dangerous run to retrieve the crystals and return the four guardians, at all costs.

dream-chaser-review.23

The plot of Dream Chasers is told by short conversations between Idana and Nito. The writing feels forced and awkward at times. There are some endearing moments, but the writing is mostly forgettable and at times utterly cringe-worthy.

The worst part is the delivery of the story. The player is provided with a limited amount of attempts at the story mode. Every attempt at a level consumes a heart. Three hearts are provided every eight hours and twelve hearts can be hoarded at any one time unless the player either buys hearts with dreams or real money. This unnecessarily breaks up the flow of an already mediocre story.

dream-chaser-review.50

Gameplay

Dream Chaser is an endless runner and We.R.Play does little to modify the base formula. Players are given an infinite tunnel to run through while avoiding obstacles and collecting orbs called dreams. Players can either strafe an obstacle or slow down temporarily to jump over the obstacle. The upgrades can be purchased with dreams as currency for use in Endless Mode.

Story mode can be considered a very long tutorial for Endless mode as power ups are slowly introduced and properly taught in story mode. There is a short movement tutorial and quick text instructions in Endless Mode. Unfortunately, Story Mode is unnecessarily broken up by the annoying heart system.

dream-chaser-review.41

The controls are decent. The whole device needs to be tilted left or right to move Nito accordingly. Tapping on the left half of the screen will enable the boost mode and tapping on the right hand of the screen will make Nito jump. Playing Dream Chaser for hours at a time with an iPhone or an iPod Touch would not be too bad, but using the heavier iPad with a heavier hard case was tiring after a while.

There is a major glitch in the game that results in Nito falling through the world. Jumping at the wrong time over a pit and landing in a specific spot will result in Nito falling  through the wall of the pit and endlessly fall through the world. I was able to do this pretty consistently after a while.

dream-chaser-review.07

The In App Purchase system is probably the worst thing in the game. The game already limits the player’s progress in story mode with the hearts system. Although extra hearts could be purchased with dreams, the prices in the shop are ridiculously high and would require hours of gameplay for a few extra tries. The prompts for the shop are extremely aggressive. It is hard to go for more than five minutes without seeing a prompt or two to purchase something from the shop. There is a fine balance required to make a mobile game with in app purchases profitable yet optional to those who want to enjoy the game without paying. Dream Chaser completely misses this balance by a few miles.

Visuals

Dream Chaser has beautiful visuals. The colour palette is soft and ethereal. It focuses heavily on pinks, purples, blues, and browns. However, things get stale quickly. There are only two levels in the game, a claustrophobic purple canyon and a slightly wider canyon with cherry blossoms planted on the side. I expected a little more variation between the two levels and was unpleasantly surprised. Worst off, as Nito runs through the canyons, the passing view does not change much

Audio

There are a handful of audio tracks and sound effects used in Dream Chaser. The songs range from dream like lullabies to intense orchestral scores. The sound effects are used extremely sparingly and often fade into the music. Dream Chaser is one of those games where muting the sound makes no real difference to the game.

dream-chaser-review.33

Overall

Dream Chaser is an average game wrecked by an aggressive in app purchase scheme. There is no reason why anyone should purchase this game for $0.99 when there are free games with similar if not less aggressive in app purchase schemes. The Story Mode should be a positive distinction for the game, but ends up being a poorly written disappointment that servers as another encouragement for the player to make in app purchases. The graphics are pretty at first glance, but get stale quickly. Skip Dream Chaser, there are better and cheaper endless runners out there.

aliens-colonial-marines-logo

We knew things were bad for Aliens: Colonial Marines but we didn’t know they were this bad. Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Wii U version has officially been cancelled.

This latest news comes after a firestorm of criticism and controversy following the game’s dismal launch and backlash from critics and gamers alike in February.

aliens-colonial-marines-screenshot-01

The Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines was said to be the best-looking version of the game and was to be released by the end of March.

This of cause is not the case. It had been long suspected that Aliens: Colonial Marines on the Wii U was in doubt. In February, the game had vanished from the Wii U online despite no official word from Sega. Check out our review for Aliens: Colonial Marines here.

Shmup Devs Join Forces for Shmup Bundle

Sumom Games has been a little slow going with their Kickstarter for Humans Must Answer, but they still believe they can make it to their goal. So, to try and drum up some more interest and hopefully reach fans of shmups that haven’t heard about their project, Sumom Games has teamed up with two other shmup devs for a 3 shmup bundle.

Including Humans Must Answer after it is finished, in addition to Syder Arcade from StudioEvil and Rhythm Destruction from Curious Panda, the Shmup Bundle is available on the Humans Must Answer Kickstarter for only £7. Those that are more familiar with Syder Arcade and Rhythm Destruction may recognize them by name, but those that don’t can find more information about them from their trailers HERE and HERE respectively.

That isn’t the only new offer from Sumom Games however, they have also added a new Limited Edition in their Kickstarter tiers. Available for only 50 backers, the Humans Must Answer Limited Edition gives those backing that tier a DVD case with exclusive artwork, printed game disc, and the original soundtrack included on the disc. Those wanting the Limited Edition can receive it for backing the project for £35.

Currently Humans Must Answer‘s Kickstarter has less than a week to go, so those that are interested or know some shmup fans should let them know about it HERE.

Laike’s PC Download Deals 4/5/2013

getloadedgo-apr4-pc-deals

Snow in April! Winter is still hanging on with its fingernails here, so I guess I’m stuck inside a little while longer.

If you only buy one deal this weekend, this is it. Get Games has their major Get Loaded deal this weekend. Buyers can choose any two Steam games from a list for $10.00. The games are Mafia II, Darksiders II, Spec Ops: The Line, Serious Sam 3: BFE, Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Civilization V, Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Just Cause 2, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY, Dirt 2, and Quantum Conundrum. I highly recommend avoiding any game regularly priced below $20 as you are saving less than 75%.  From the list of games, I personally would highly recommend purchasing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Borderlands, Civilization V, and Spec Ops: The Line. They are all fantastic games and excellent prices for the titles. For those who missed last week’s THQ bundle, Darksiders II is at a great price, however the PC port leaves a lot to be desired.

The Get Loaded deal isn’t the only sale running at Get Games this week. Particularly worthwhile purchases are Hitman Absolution for 75% off  and Company of Heroes 2 preorder for 22% off. I’ve been playing Hitman Absolution lately and am completely in love with the series all over again. The game is a fantastic example of a PC port done correctly. Hats off to the development team! Be sure to read the full Capsule Computers review of Hitman Absolution.

For today only, Amazon is running an amazing Gold Box deal for Borderlands 2 and the Season Pass. Buying them together will net you a 72% savings at $24.99 or buy them separately for 67% off. Dead Island Game of the Year Edition is 75% off and comes with an $8.00 pre-order credit towards Dead Island Riptide. This is one of the best deals for Dead Island GOTY out there, especially if you plan on pre-ordering Dead Island Riptide at the same time.

GOG.com has an interesting Dungeons & Dragons promo running this weekend. There are ten games on sale and the more titles purchased at once, the larger the savings. Buy all ten games and get them for a mighty 85% . Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2 Complete, Icewind Dale Complete, Icewind Dale 2 Complete, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, The Temple of Elemental Evil, Dungeons and Dragons: Dragonshard, Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition, and Planescape: Torment are all on sale. If you are looking for something more modern or you prefer your games DRM free, Omerta: City of Gangsters is also 50% off with the Con Artist DLC thrown in for free.

Gamefly has several titles on sale this week. Most of it is nothing impressive, but The Walking Dead is 60% off. This is the lowest price since it was 65% off several months ago. The game won Capsule Computer and over 80 other publications Game of the Year award for 2012. If you must play only one point and click adventure game in your entire life, this may be the game to play. If you are interested in Victoria II, I highly recommend avoiding Gamefly’s 50% off. GamersGate is running a much better deal.

GamersGate is running a Might and Magic themed weekend. Most titles are 50% to 75% off. I highly recommend Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. It is an extremely accessible strategic puzzle game that serves as a prequel to Might and Magic V. If Might and Magic isn’t your thing, there are several other excellent deals going on at GamersGate. Victoria II and its expansion pack A House Divided is on sale for 75% off. Skip on the sprite packs as they are only 55% off. Fallen Enchantress is also on sale for 50% off. It deal is ok but not great as it has gone down to 66% off before.

Greenman Gaming is running a big Focus Home Interactive deal this weekend. Recommended titles are Of Orcs and Men, Wargame: European Escalation, and Blood Bowl Chaos Edition. If you are looking for something less violent, The Next Big Thing is on sale for 75% off. It is a laugh out loud funny game from the creators of the legendary point and click adventure series Runaway. If you want to learn more, read the review I wrote for the iOS edition called Hollywood Monsters.

Steam’s Weekend Deals are Omerta: City of Gangsters, the Red Orchestra series and the Tripwire Interactive Bundle. Omerta: City of Gangsters is at its lowest at 50% off. The game fuses turn based strategy RPG elements in the old 1920’s gangster theme. If you’re willing to forgo Steam for a DRM free download, I recommend purchasing this from GOG.com instead.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, its sequel Red Orchestra 2 GOTY and the Red Orchestra 2 Digital Deluxe Upgrade are all 85% off. I strongly recommend skipping the Steam deal and instead opting for the Tripwire Interactive Humble Weekly Sale bundle. Although it is a pay what you want bundle, the price for both Red Orchestras are well above the current average price paid for the bundle. So you can easily beat the average price, get both games and Killing Floor with most of the DLC and buy the Red Orchestra 2 Digital Deluxe Upgrade with the money you save. As a bonus, a part of your money goes to support charity! For those on the fence, Red Orchestra 2 is free to play this weekend. I highly recommend Red Orchestra 2 for those who find the ArmA series to be too complicated, but are looking for something more realistic than Call of Duty and Battlefield. Tripwire’s full library including Red Orchestra is on sale, but the Humble Weekly bundle is a much better deal unless you are interested in Dwarves?! and The Ball. Both of those games are pretty fun, but not enough to warrant the almost six extra dollars over the Humble Weekly Bundle’s BTA asking price.

Torchlight II is on sale on Steam until April 8th to celebrate the release of Steam Workshop and the GUTS modding tools. The game is already a fantastic hack ‘n slash action RPG for a great price. The extensive modding tools are just fantastic. The current mods are slowly being moved to the new format. Adding mods will now be much easier as there are no more compatibility issues to worry about. I highly recommend purchasing Torchlight II if you have not already.

This week’s Week Long Deals did not get its own news post this week. However, Towns, Kung Fu Strike – The Warrior’s RisePacific Storm AlliesMaking History: The Calm & The Storm, 9th Company: Roots of Terror, and DCS A-10c Warthog are all on sale. Although Towns is not technically part of the Early Access program, the game is still considered by many owners to be in early development.

Defiance Review

Defiance
Developer: Trion Worlds
Publisher: Trion Worlds
Platforms: PC (Reviewed), Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Release Date: April 2, 2013
Price: $59.99 – Available Here

Overview
Defiance. It’s rare that such an ambitious project comes along. No, this isn’t a game based on the 2008 historical drama starring Daniel Craig. Defiance was designed as a third-person shooter MMO. Even more impressive is its union with the Syfy channel’s upcoming show of the same name that aims to unite two completely separate forms of media – television and video games. How well does Defiance hold up? Should you join the fight or rise up against it? Let’s find out.

defiance-screenshot-01

Story
In the near future the world is a very different place. Aliens known as Votans are fleeing from their homeworld to find resources. En route to a new home, their crafts, known as Arks, suffer terrible disaster and break up within Earth’s orbit. This causes pieces of the arks to fall to earth, bringing with it both treasure and danger.

You take on the roll of an ark hunter. Having recently signed with Von Bach Industries, your mission to find valuable arktech near the San Francisco Bay area goes terribly awry. Your ship is shot out of sky, crashing to earth as you escape in a pod. When the dust settles, your expedition leader is missing and you have to find him. You’ll also help the locals along the way, often right alongside the characters from the upcoming television show.

defiance-screenshot-02

Gameplay
At first glance, Defiance looks like your run-of-the-mill science fiction MMO. There are aliens, mutants, spaceships, crash landings, and guns. So many guns. Even though it looks like an MMO, at its heart you’ll find a shooter and so much more.

Defiance is multifaceted. The combat will feel familiar to most players even if they’ve never experienced an MMO before. As with many other third-person shooters, you’ll equip and alternate between two guns at a time. You’ll earn experience points and occasional loot for dispatching enemies. Eliminating a bunch in quick succession earns you some experience bonuses. At its core it’s a basic shooter, right down to dodging, jumping, and tossing grenades. Add the RPG mechanics on top and you’ve got a unique experience that strikes the reward centers of your brain in a way that has driven RPG gamers to grind for decades.

One unique aspect that sets Defiance apart is its EGO system. This allows you to learn or upgrade skills and perks that seriously impact how you approach combat. Enjoy stalking in the shadows? Want bonuses for risking yourself in melee combat? EGO’s got your back. You initially get only one skill and one perk slot to equip, but as you level up more perk slots unlock for you to utilize. This grants you a feeling of accomplishment for doing something significant to beef up your character.

defiance-screenshot-03

Apart from the combat system, the game is set up like most MMOs. There are hubs to pick up quests and perform various missions, which let you get some experience, cash, and items to help out. There are also dynamic events where you’ll join dozens of players to take out hordes of enemies, rewarding you with experience and money before sending you back on your way.

Story missions take you all across the world. You’ll be working in the trenches right alongside the characters from the upcoming television show. This serves to give you a good story and draw you into the world. The missions and their dialogue are fun and interesting. You’ll look forward to seeing what twists and turns are coming up next. MMO fans will likely miss the auction house and bank, however.

Within Defiance there are a handful of sub-games that utilize matchmaking. These include Shadow Ops, Team Deathmatch, and Cooperative Missions. Shadow Ops is a rebranding of the Domination game mode so many shooter fans are familiar with. Cooperative missions team you up with a few other ark hunters to take on instanced missions, including boss battles. The game modes are a welcome break from the norm, but each of them feels somewhat lacking in diversity this early on.

While you can use a keyboard and mouse for the PC, an Xbox controller can serve as an excellent alternative. The controls for the Xbox version of the game are brought directly over, so players who own both versions are free to choose. Menus actually feel more intuitive to navigate with the controller than mouse and keyboard. Both schemes work well, but more viable options are always welcome.

defiance-screenshot-04

While the world is interesting to explore and a blast to play, the game is not flawless. Some enemies have fantastic design, but you’ll have to fight countless old mobs ad nauseum most of the time. Your personal inventory slots are the only storage you get and you start with only a dozen. Though you’ll earn more over time, inventory management can be cumbersome at times, too.

As far as your gear goes, the satisfaction tied to personalizing your look here feels diminished. You have “outfits” that work like the one-piece suits you put on a paper doll. It’s either all or nothing – no mix-and-match allowed. It would’ve been fantastic to have more customization options. This greatly reduces your incentive to keep deep diving for new loot like you would in other MMOs. New gear can be fairly hard to come by, requiring a random drop, quest reward, or vendor purchase. Defeating a boss doesn’t necessarily grant you a reward, either. If the Diablo series’ loot system was an indie car, Defiance‘s would be more akin to a moped.

defiance-screenshot-06

Cross-platform play is a topic many people will want to know about. Does an MMO produced for three different platforms stay consistent across each platform. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. That character you created on your Xbox? Don’t expect to see him when you log in to your PC. This could’ve been a fantastic way to unite the player base. Instead, they’ve effectively splintered it into three.

Microtransactions are another hot topic. As a game that doesn’t charge a monthly fee, be assured you’ll see plenty of opportunities to spend some dough. This is fine for vanity items like outfits and helmets, but it’s hard to feel that the lack of item storage isn’t also caused by this. Trion Worlds is more than open to the idea of you paying them a few dollars to unlock extra inventory slots, which is a big deal without a player bank. It feels like a cheap, unnecessary jab at fans who have already paid full price for your game. It’s also disappointing that money purchases don’t jump platforms either.

Visuals and Audio
The visuals in Defiance don’t really do anything to set it apart. The storyline characters are brought to life well and there are a few enemies with some real visual pop, but otherwise the game feels like a run-of-the-mill post-apocalyptic sci-fi game. It almost has an air of the Borderlands aesthetic, but with less color and personality.

That said, if you have both a console and PC, and visuals are a strong bullet point for you, the PC version is hands-down the better looking of the two. Everything is crisper, smoother, and higher resolution. The console version doesn’t look terrible, but when placed side by side, the PC just simply dwarfs it.

defiance-screenshot-05

Music in the game is a fair mix of orchestral and electronica, able to provoke both somber, mellow tones, and intense, adrenaline-fueled hype music. Voice work in the game is a particular high point, showcasing the talents of the upcoming television show’s stars.

Overall
Overall, Defiance is a ball to play. Though the graphics aren’t particularly special and the music feels fairly routine for the setting, the game is fun. You’ll enjoy yourself whether dug in with a hundred other ark hunters fighting off a giant hellbug or taking on a group of mobs for a quick quest. Players familiar with MMOs may feel that a bit is missing here, and a few other flaws present themselves, but the game is young and the devs are working hard to eliminate issues.

Microtransactions are harmless at times but the opportunity to buy more inventory space when so little is provided feels like a cash grab. Still, there is a great deal of content with the promise of more coming in the form of DLC. With proper cultivation, Defiance could grow from a good game into a great MMO with some real staying power.
