In Celebration of the Games For Change Festival, Global Gaming Initiative Expands Sidekick Cycle and Adds New Charitable Partner

In Celebration of the Games For Change Festival, Global Gaming Initiative Expands Sidekick Cycle and Adds New Charitable Partner

iOS Update Doubles Sidekick Cycle’s Content, Android and Kindle Versions Now Available

Minneapolis, MN – April 22, 2014 – The Games for Change Festival kicks off this week in New York City as a component of the legendary Tribeca Film Festival. In celebration, Global Gaming Initiative today released a major update to its debut title, Sidekick Cycle, the exhilarating downhill cycling mobile game that shares half of its proceeds to give bikes to children in need around the world. The game’s content has been nearly doubled and every aspect of the game has been refined and optimized based on months of player feedback. The game is also now available for Android on the Google Play store as well as on Amazon for Kindle, expanding the community of players that can make a difference in children’s lives.

Sidekick Cycle’s latest heart-pumping content pedals players through the slopes of North America for 36 new levels of bike-busting action. The update also features:

  • Two additional Sidekicks with special powers for conquering wild terrain.
  • Three female cyclists joining the roster.
  • Four more deluxe bikes to ride, including the new hover-bike!
  • A mountain of new obstacles and challenges to overcome on the way down, including zip lines, loops, rolling boulders and more.
  • Full Facebook leaderboard integration, letting riders compare high scores against their friends on every level.

To mark this new frontier, Global Gaming Initiative has added a new charitable partner – Minneapolis-based Free Bikes 4 Kidz. Fifty percent of all money spent through in-app purchases in Sidekick Cycle will help this important charity, which gives away thousands of bikes every year to needy communities in the United States and developing world. This week, Global Gaming Initiative will fulfill this mission and give away 45 bikes to deserving kids in the greater New York area.

Global Gaming Initiative will be debuting the new version of Sidekick Cycle at the Games for Change Arcade at the Tribeca Family Festival between 10 AM and 6 PM on April 26 (located on Jay St. between Greenwich St. and Hudson St. in Manhattan).

Events Cinemas Celebrating Star Wars Day with Movie Marathon

Event-Cinemas-Star-Wars-Marathon-01

I completely forgot that May the 4th (genius play on words by the way) was global Star Wars day, but Event Cinemas is on top of the unofficial geek holiday. Select Event Cinemas will be holding the Star Wars ‘May The 4th Be With You’ Movie Marathon across two days.

On May 3rd, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (PG), Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (PG) and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (M) will be played. I’m personally predicting a lesser attendance for this one.

On May 4th, the original trilogy (although second in the timeline… isn’t that infuriating to explain to noobs!) will play: Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (PG), Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back (PG) and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi (PG).

As you can see on the right, tickets for each marathon cost $25 (plus $1.10 as an online booking fee). For the more hardcore of fans who wish to attend, do so in full cosplay and you could win the best dressed competition! Movie passes and light sabres will be up for grabs!

Click here for tickets and a full list of participating locations. If you’re in the Sydney CBD, Event Cinemas George St. should be your spot! Have fun walking around the city with a cape.

LONDON (22 April 2014) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY CURTAIN CALL, a rhythm action game combining classic FINAL FANTASY music with RPG elements, will be released later this year, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS™ system.

THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY CURTAIN CALL is the sequel to THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY®, released on the Nintendo 3DS in July 2012, and includes three times as many songs and twice as many playable characters as its predecessor. In addition to the new features mentioned below, the sequel also boasts two new game modes: Quest Medley where you alternate playing FMS (Field Music Sequence) and BMS (Battle Music Sequence) games – and the exciting Versus BMS mode, where players can challenge and compete against friends and other players. The game also includes a number of customisation and progression elements that the FINAL FANTASY series is renowned for.

Featuring more than 200 songs and 60 playable characters from across the entire FINAL FANTASY series – including FINAL FANTASY VII: Advent Children®, FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® and recently released titles like LIGHTNING RETURNS™: FINAL FANTASY XIII and FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn®, THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY CURTAIN CALL lets players relive their favourite moments from across the epic series, as they tap their way through key FINAL FANTASY events, environments and battle sequences.

“Music is an integral part of the FINAL FANTASY experience that serves as a complement to the gameplay,” said Ichiro Hazama, producer. “As with the previous title, we envisioned a game where the music takes centre stage and the RPG gameplay enhances that experience.  Our fans are definitely in for a treat as they’ll be able to re-experience their favourite songs across the entire FINAL FANTASY catalogue.”

Key features include:

  • Versus Battle Mode – Players can now compete head-to-head with friends and other users
  • Quest Medley Mode – Songs from the vast FINAL FANTASY music catalogue are used as backgrounds to unique quests; players can choose their own routes through various short, medium and long adventures. Players can also share these quests with friends.
  • New Characters – The game features over 60 characters from across the series, including Barret (FINAL FANTASY VII) and Yuna (FINAL FANTASY X-2). Characters from spin-offs like Benjamin (FINAL FANTASY MYSTIC QUEST), Ramza (FINAL FANTASY TACTICS) and Zack (CRISIS CORE® -FINAL FANTASY VII-) also make their debut in this game.
  • Collecta Crystarium – Clearing songs and winning battles allow players to obtain CollectaCards that boost their character stats.

Silent Hill: Origins and Shattered Memories Coming to the PS Vita

Silent-Hill-Shattered-Memories-Screen-01

Konami Digital Entertainment will be bringing a dose of psychological horror to the PS Vita, with Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories set for release on PSN. The release date for this double bill will be announced soon.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories originally released for the Nintendo Wii in December, 2009, before ported versions released for the PlayStation 2 and PSP. Silent Hill: Origins, however, came out first on the PSP, and then the PlayStation 2. Now a whole new generation will get to experience the legendary horror series on the PS Vita; with Origins being a prequel, and Shattered Memories being the most innovative as an adaptive retelling of Harry Mason’s quest to find his missing daughter (the premise of the initial entry in the franchise), there couldn’t be a better introduction for handheld gamers to Silent Hill.

Knights of Sidonia Episode 1 Impressions

Knights of Sidonia
Episode 1 – First Battle

Mecha fans are spoiled for choice these days. Each season has something new to add to the resurgent robot genre and Spring this year is no different, giving us not only Knights of Sidonia but also Captain Earth. The premise for Sidonia is a rehash on paper; humans now live on giant colonies in space and face the Gauna, a tentacled alien menace against which they do battle using humanoid frames called Gardes. It’s also a whole lot more than that which is why I decided to cover it.

Let’s get one major flaw out of the way so I won’t be repeating myself for ten weeks. The character animation is bizarre. I’m not entirely sure what they wanted to achieve but the faces are CG-ish and look awkward, not to mention that it results in jittery frames. Now that we have fish-faces taken care of, let’s move on.

knights-of-sidonia-episode-1-screenshot-02

Knights of Sidonia has a ridiculously fleshed-out back story from the get-go. Everything is meticulously detailed; cockpits, pilot interfaces, the colony’s inner machinery and so on. Nagate Tanikaze is our hero of the show. He spends his days deep in the bowels of Sidonia, a monolithic ship housing a portion of humanity, training to pilot the Garde mechs using simulation pods.

He’s a little weird, rarely mingling with the other residents and forced to steal rice from the massive food production facility that feeds the population. After getting caught he is brought to the surface for the first time and risks being thrown in the “bio reactor”, which I’m guessing is a furnace that powers the colossal vessel. Luckily he is saved by Ochiai, a man who represents the captain of the ship, a woman who hides behind a mask yet removes it when she meets Nagate. I’m going to hazard a guess that she isn’t exactly human 100%, as her face does look a little awkward.

knights-of-sidonia-episode-1-screenshot-04

Earlier on we see her in a room with stone faces talking out of raised capsules. They mention someone called Saitou Hiroki, his mummified remains and whether Nagate inherited his skills and experience. To add fuel to the intrigue, we see activists proclaiming that Sidonia is ruled by “undead” waging a false war to prolong their lives. Naturally they are dismissed as crazy but those stone faces could be exactly that.

So Nagate is asked to become a Gardes pilot of Sidonia and next thing you know he’s introduced to a bear called Hiyama with a robotic arm. Even stranger, he meets Izana Shinatose. Here we learn another curious fact: procreation can now be done with both men and women and there is now a third gender where the body adapts after a partner is chosen. This isn’t very clear because what if you don’t end up choosing a partner? Or if your partner is of the third gender too?

knights-of-sidonia-episode-1-screenshot-03

Sidonia borrows traits from other shows like the Gauna having a “core” which needs to be destroyed, the brain or spinal cord, which can only be pierced with a special spear called the Kabizashi, of which only 28 exist in Sidonia. Nagate is assigned the Type 17 Tsugimori Garde and we see a bit of rivalry. Norio Kunato is a proud character who believed he would be the one to use this machine.

Nagate is called to his first sortie, a mining mission, and the launch and takeoff sequence is awesome. I really love the cinematography and camera angles in this series, whoever is in charge of that knows what they’re doing. Have I mentioned the attention to detail?

knights-of-sidonia-episode-1-screenshot-05

As expected, the mining op is derailed by the appearance of a Gauna from beneath the ice of the dwarf planet, and they haven’t been sighted for over a hundred years. This anime has a fascinating setting with incredible designs so let’s hope the plot is strong in this one!
