Overview
There are a number of two-cour anime series that start out a bit slow in the beginning in an effort to introduce viewers to the world and the characters only to fall apart in the second half. Aquarion Evol’s first half helped establish the battle between Vega and Altair as well as introduce us to the conniving Mykage who seems to be pulling the strings behind everything. Now with the first half down and plenty of innuendo to go, does Aquarion Evol Part 2 manage to bring this story to a successful conclusion?

Story
It is worth noting that this review will contain spoilers for the events that happen in the first half of the series. Anyways, the second half of Aquarion Evol begins on a somber note as Yunoha, Amata, Mikono, and the rest of the class mourn the death of Jin who, despite being an enemy, was their friend. On the other side of things, Mykage uses Jin’s death as a rallying cry to stir the men of Altair into action all while hiding the fact that he is the cause of Jin’s death.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (1)

While mourning the death of Jin, Fudo places the Aquarion pilots through a nightmarish training scenario where they are buried under ground alongside their dead friend in an effort to push them past their current limits and trigger Mikono’s abilities. While this is successful, Mykage makes use of the situation to allow Kagura to appear on Vega and not only thwart the pilots’ new abilities but also kidnap Mikono.

Although they manage to put a stop to Kagura’s rampage and rescue Mikono, emotions are running high as not only does Mikono feel an odd connection to Kagura, the worried Amata continues to ignore Zessica even though she seems to have the best grasp of events. Following a love confession from Zessica to Amata and developments between Andy and Mix the series begins to move forward towards the final series of confrontations.

While the first half of the series was spent introducing us to the cast of characters, focused on a number of odd training exercises between couples, and spent plenty of time on humor and lewd jokes, the second half is mostly about trying to wrap everything up that has been hinted at so far in the series. While it may begin with some more training, most of the focus is centered on developing Amata, Mikono, and Zessica’s relationship as well as Andy and Mix.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (2)

This becomes a rather interesting task considering the fact that the way that the main characters have been developed is incredibly weak. Mikono consistently appears useless throughout the entire series, Amata’s past and connection with Kagura is revealed but lacks any impact due to the fact that the series spends little time letting the viewer feel like Amata is even a character we should really care about at any point in the series as his blind obsession with the boring Mikono is a terrible aspect of the series.

On the other hand, watching how Andy and Mix develop over the course of the series and the trials that they are put through in the second half shows how the series’ relationships should have been handled in the first place. There is actual development made between the two and although Andy’s forthrightness is mistaken as simply being perverted, he is an extremely likable character. Alongside that, watching Zessica’s slow descent into denial and acceptance of where her emotions lie is another interesting experience, even if it seems she is put through the harshest trial for no pay whatsoever.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (3)

Ultimately Part 2 of Aquarion Evol falls back on a large number of references to the original Aquarion series as numerous names are pulled out from the past regarding reincarnation and fate to try and wrap things up but generally losing any sense of meaningful development because of this. By dropping most of the humor that made the first half of the show so fun, the series finds itself a conclusion but one that will leave viewers feeling disappointed despite the amount of action, character development, and twists that occur in the final set of episodes.

Visuals
It can be said that Aquarion Evol was probably one of the best looking series when it aired back during 2012 as the animation is handled so well. The mixture of standard animation and CGI with the various Aquarion designs and battles is so impressive looking that it puts many other series’ attempts at such a feat to shame. Thanks to how impressive the animation is, every battle sequence looks amazing without any significant drop in visual quality which is hard to accomplish but looks simple in Aquarion Evol.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (4)

As before the character designs feature a number of variations with plenty of bright colors to help keep things looking fresh. Zessica goes through a number of wardrobe changes in the series as she tries to come to terms with herself and the environments, including all of the time spent on Altair, are incredibly detailed and impressive to see.

Audio
Unfortunately I must say that the voice work for Aquarion Evol’s second half is still sub-par in a number of areas. The English voice work is passable at best and it seems like a few of the side-characters have come into their own throughout the second half which is nice to hear. Thankfully alongside the English dub the original Japanese voice track is still intact for those who would prefer that option.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (5)

As before, one of the best parts of Aquarion Evol is the series’ soundtrack. With numerous orchestral tracks spread throughout the series, many of which are accompanied by great vocals, help make a number of important scenes really stand out. The main opening theme for part two is “Paradoxical ZOO” by AKINO with Bless4 and while it is still a great opening song, it isn’t as good as the first opening theme. As for the ending theme, a few different themes are used in the second half but most of the episodes close out with the somber “Yunoha no Mori” by Yui Ogura, the Japanese voice actress for Yunoha.

Extras
The bonus features included in Aquarion Evol Part 2 are fairly standard for a FUNimation release, though that is more than can be said for some company’s releases. There are a number of promotional videos from Japan, the US trailer for the series, a clean version of the original opening theme and second opening theme as well as a clean version of the main ending theme in the second half, and finally trailers for other FUNimation anime.

aquarion-evol-part-2-screenshot- (6)

Closing out the special features are two episode commentary tracks, one for episode 15 featuring Cristopher Bevans who voices Amata and Jaffe Taliesin who handles the voice of Kagura. The second commentary is for episode 26 and sees the return of Bevans who is accompanied by J. Michael Tatum, the voice of Mykage, and Caitlin Glass, voice of Zessica.

Overall
Aquarion Evol is a series that started out with promise but ends up being a disappointment when everything is said and done. With such an outstanding soundtrack, superb animation, and great action sequences it is hard to say that the series ends up being generic in many regards due to the way the show tries to tie everything together and how terrible Amata and Mikono are as main characters. Numerous issues surrounding Amata will feel superfluous and have no resolution, but at least the side characters actually have a story of their own to help make Aquarion Evol’s second half somewhat worthwhile.

Wolfenstein: The New Order Review

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Developer: MachineGames
Publisher: Bethesda
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One (Reviewed)
Release Date: May 20, 2014
Price: $59.99 – Available Here

Overview
For a period of time everyone was getting tired of shooting Nazis in video games. Now almost every game involves a modern setting or takes place in the Middle East, making a return to killing Nazis a fresh feeling again. Many gamers might have cut their teeth with the original Wolfenstein back in the day, and now that we are in a new generation of consoles, Wolfenstein: The New Order has come to grace these platforms. That being said, is this latest Wolfenstein something fans of the series and FPSs in general have been waiting for?

Story
World War II is still raging on over a year after it should have originally ended in history and the Allied forces are quickly losing ground to the Nazi war machine which has procured a large amount of advanced technology that the Allies simply cannot stand up against. In an effort to try and bring down one of the leaders of the Nazi forces, the Allies launch an assault against the general known as Deathshead and players take control of the man who put a stop to his plans years ago, B.J. Blazkowicz.

wolfenstein-the-new-order-screen- (2)

Unfortunately the Allies are quickly overpowered and despite Blazkowicz’s best efforts, he is captured and forced to make a choice between two soldiers that has some minor story changes depending on who the player picks, only to end up being severely wounded to the point of entering a vegetative state. Placed in a mental hospital for over fourteen years, Blazkowicz can do nothing as he sees the Nazis mistreat the staff but once his life and that of the girl who has cared for him over the years is put in danger, Blazkowicz enters the fight once again.

However it is now 1960 and even the United States has surrendered to the Nazis, ending the war and placing the world under the Nazi flag. It is up to players to try and find the remaining resistance members and strike back against the Nazis. To do this players will go through numerous stages that involve rescuing allies, attacking numerous Nazi compounds, infiltrating areas, and even go off-world in a campaign that is surprisingly long, a rare trait in today’s FPS genre.

wolfenstein-the-new-order-screen- (5)

Wolfenstein: The New Order’s story is fairly predictable but it is certainly interesting seeing and hearing about how the world has changed under the Nazis as well as the constantly changing areas and collectible reading material that litters each place the player visits throughout the campaign. Plus Blazkowicz’s relationships with the rest of the resistance and his running monologue throughout the title that generally revolves around him lamenting the events taking place and blood being shed, helps add some depth to his character and makes him more than just a walking killing machine.

Gameplay
While there is some downtime between certain stages that see Blazkowicz speaking with and helping out fellow resistance members by gathering items they need around their base, almost everything in Wolfenstein: The New Order involves shooting Nazis. There are a plethora of ways to go about doing this as the game allows for numerous play styles and there are perks to be unlocked to help evolve said style in what can best be described as fun and brutal gunplay.

Almost every stage in The New Order allows the player to take approaches to a situation. You can go in guns blazing, whipping grenades at enemies while dual-wielding automatic shotguns that blow enemies heads and limbs off, you can be sneaky and assassinate enemies from behind with executions or throwing knives, or you can mix and match which is often the case in most of the game’s combat scenarios. It is worth noting that the aforementioned perks are unlocked by completing a set goal and these perks are permanently unlocked from then on and since there is no need to pick a specific skill tree to follow, you can make use of every unlocked perk at any given time.

wolfenstein-the-new-order-screen- (4)

Players will begin to feel like a walking arsenal thanks to the fact that the game makes use of a weapon wheel that allows the player to carry numerous weapons and dual-wield most of these weapons. Of course there is also the option to simply tap Y to switch to your most recent weapon on the fly. It is also nice to see that while The New Order does feature regenerating health, it is limited. Wounded players will generally only recover health to 20, 40, 60 or 80, whichever is closest going up, and recovering past those points requires gathering health kits or food that is scattered around a level.

Players can also find armor in the field, generally taking it from fallen enemies, but this does not regenerate in any way and even though armor does stop some damage, it does not prevent your health from being affected by enemy fire meaning you can find yourself seeing a death screen often if you do not play smart. Then again, on normal difficulty enemy AI can be rather stupid at times and leave themselves wide-open in the middle of a firefight so those looking for a real challenge will probably want to go a level higher.

wolfenstein-the-new-order-screen- (3)

Another way to play smart is to aim for enemy Commanders at the start of a battle or try to take them out stealthily as they can call in enemy reinforcements that will continue to swarm the area until they are eliminated. This is generally where the combination of stealth and action blends together well as you can usually only sneak so far before being seen and fired upon.

Outside of the commanders there are a number of different enemies you will come across ranging from cyborg attack dogs, giant metal monstrosities, cyborg soldiers capable of taking a large amount of punishment, and more to keep the action somewhat fresh. Even then there are times that the action can grow to feel a bit repetitive though there are always collectibles, including Enigma Codes that, once the players uncover all the pieces unlocks a special game-mode variant, and hidden areas to discover as well to help keep the player’s eyes peeled.

Visuals & Audio
Playing through The New Order on the Xbox One is quite an experience simply because of how amazing everything looks in the game and how well it runs. No matter how intense the action became the game never slowed down or lost detail to try and keep up with what was happening on screen. The environments are impressive looking and varied enough to remain fresh while the enemies start to look repetitive once the player is halfway through the game, of course that doesn’t stop the blood and gore from being a nice touch to the game’s bloody gunplay. It is also nice to note that the character models are great looking, especially in cut-scenes and the rare moments the player spends at the resistance’s base.

wolfenstein-the-new-order-screen- (1)

The voice work throughout Wolfenstein: The New Order is very impressive with Blazkowicz’s voice actor sounding very believable for the role which helps set the tone for the game while the rest of the voice acting is similarly impressive. Along those lines the game’s sound effects are also fairly enjoyable and everything is supported by a fitting soundtrack that generally blends into the background.

Overall
Wolfenstein: The New Order harkens back to the time before some form of online multiplayer was forced into every FPS and it is for the better because of it. What we have here is a fun game that doesn’t stretch the boundaries of what an FPS would generally do, but excels in every way a game like this should. With a now fresh story with enjoyable characters and satisfying gunplay that offers a numerous options for Nazi killing, Wolfenstein: The New Order is an amazing looking title that feels a bit too set in its ways at times but one that players will undoubtedly have fun playing.

The newest entry in the Battlefield series will be launching this Fall and is called Battlefield: Hardline. Not much is known about the game but we do know it is a new branch for the series (we are still certain a Battlefield 5 will be on the way in coming years) and will focus against the backdrop of the war on crime and the battle between cops and criminals. Four class types were also leaked titled Enforcer, Mechanic, Operator and Professional. The game is apparently coming to Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC and developer Visceral Games (best known for Dead Space franchise) is jumping on board to help with the single player campaign.

There is an official website but for now it’s just a teaser with some promo art and announcement news. The official premiere of the game will take place at EA’s E3 show on June 9 at Noon PDT alongside 5 other supposed new game announcements, so be sure to check back then for all the latest information on the game as we bring you the latest E3 coverage as it happens.
