Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 Review

Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3
Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Platforms: Playstation Vita, Nintendo 3DS (Reviewed)
Release Date: June 30, 2015
Price: $39.99 USD – Available Here

Overview
Good ol’ Koei Tecmo know how to please their fans. Even though we just received Samurai Warriors 4 not too long ago for the Vita and Playstation 4, Samurai Warrior Chronicles 3 has landed on the Nintendo 3DS and Vita, mainly existing to please some Nintendo fans wanting more from the beloved franchise. Honestly, I think it is a good move as while the Vita did get a “prettier” version of the same series earlier this year, it isn’t too often when the 3DS gets a title from the Warriors line – which seems to be changing in the other direction as we move forward. With some new features and customization, how does this title fare? Let’s find out.

samurai-warriors-chronicles-3-screenshot-01

Story
The story in Samurai Warriors is honestly not a huge factor for the title whatsoever. Like all titles from the same line, this one places the player in the period where multiple empires are at war, with a ton of dialogue inserted to move the plot forward. When I say a ton, I truly mean a ton as this may very well be the most conversational cast to come to a portable Warriors game. Of course that is a good thing for players looking to soak up the lore, but for the most part you play a simple soldier who is just part of the action, rather than a focal point. Sure, characters respond a bit to your character differently if you pick a male or female – but don’t expect to feel like more than a foot soldier set among more famous allies.

Gameplay
The gameplay is what truly matters and thankfully- fans will be happy to know that this installment does well in terms of performance. For the most part, the controls are on par with the Warriors titles of the past, allowing for some quick hack and slash gameplay that Koei has seemed to master on consoles over the years. Of course this is a Chronicles title and is a spin-off of Samurai Warriors – intended for portable platforms, so expect a bit less overall in terms of upgrades and depth that a console version may have. Now I know, Samurai Warriors 4 was on the Vita – but I played this on the 3DS and that Vita version of 4 is simply a port of the Playstation 3 version. I am not trying to make excuses for the shortcomings of Chronicles 3, I just feel it is important to have a full understanding of the intended audience and purpose of this lightweight title before players decide to pick it up.

samurai-warriors-chronicles-3-screenshot-03

Getting back on track, one of the finest features of Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 is the customization. Right at the start, players must create a character to their liking to take to the fields. The creation tool is actually rather complex and surprised me a bit, as you can even change the tone and general shape of your character. I know that sounds rather silly to compliment, but I find it kind of nice when developers let players use their full imagination – meaning you can be as serious or offbeat as you choose to be. A returning feature that has been improved upon is the ability to switch heroes during battle. Now players can simply tap their icon on the map and instantly get a new perspective without having to make a long trek. Its convenient and a great use of the touchscreen controls, streamlining the action for further simplicity. Speaking of touchscreen – War Arts are new abilities for warriors that improve the odds during battle. This isn’t a game changer by any means, but it was nice to see a little option come in handy during some of the earlier portions of the game.

samurai-warriors-chronicles-3-screenshot-02

I may have made the upgrading mechanics seem a little weaker a moment ago compared to other Warriors titles, but that doesn’t mean that the system in place isn’t well crafted. Chronicles 3 features three different shops that can be upgraded by investing gold. The further the upgrade, the better equipment you can get as the player as a whole (or better parties via the tea house). The game does give a lot of currency after each mission as well, and that is where things become a bit of a mixed bag. It is easy to level up and upgrade and ultra convenient. However, you can easily become overpowered and take a lot of the challenge away unless you switch to the default characters of the current campaign mission. Sure, there are difficulty settings that can attempt to balance this, but even with that its only a matter of time before you literally hack through everything in sight without any qualms.

samurai-warriors-chronicles-3-screenshot-05

Challenge Mode is kind of like “Let’s Make a Deal” of the Warriors world here. Players do missions such as reaching checkpoints and taking down opponents throughout – but eventually will have to choose if they want to move on or take the rewards collected before moving onward after defeating a boss. Its a fun offering that provides a ton of extra gameplay on top of the main campaign, and can easily become a great time sink. If I had any gripes about Samurai Warrior Chronicles 3, it would have to be the camera – which is something I fought with regularly with the 3DS version. At times I would have a piece of the environment in front of my character and the batch of foes I was fighting, and if it was not a hack and slash – that very well could have caused a problem. Of course being able to see my character is something that I feel is needed – and hopefully in future portable versions Koei can fix this frustrating camera issue for the 3DS.

Visuals
When I first saw the character model in the creation mode and watched a few of the cutscenes, I was honestly impressed with how great the models looked. Shortly after, that kind of wore off as this title is not that pretty in general while you are actually playing the game. While the frame rate is stable and animations are fluid (which is a big deal when you have so many enemies on the screen), the visuals are kind of muddy and the models look severely dated, even by 3DS standards. The cutscenes look fine, but the dialogue sequences seem like two png images that have been plastered on a background so players get a crisp 3D image if they have the slider up. Sure, it does look ok then, but if you choose not to use 3D – it looks cheap and kind of hurts the overall presentation.

samurai-warriors-chronicles-3-screenshot-04

Audio
The sound is well done. Sure, the dialogue may be in Japanese, but subtitles are very present and most fans of the franchise will be just fine with the lack of English voice actors. The music is also well done – but not very memorable overall. That is more of a personal opinion about all of the Samurai Warriors titles though, as while I have heard praise over the soundtrack, I feel it is more of just themed tunes that are used to solve the lack of noise. Either way, it is a complete package and at least fitting – so no complaints here.

Overall
Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 is a great addition to the series and more than welcome in the west. Sure, it is not as good as other portable entries – but it brings more of the same satisfying combat and mission structures that keeps this franchise’s heart beating. Sometimes all a portable spin-off has to do is merely tackle the concept correctly to be deemed “good”, and for what its worth, Chronicles 3 is more than enough to appease our appetite until something greater comes along.

Dragon Ball Super Primer

dragon-ball-super-logo-02

The very first episode of Dragon Ball Super has just aired in Japan over the weekend in what is an exciting time for Dragon Ball fans around the world. While it may be a tiny bit late, this Dragon Ball Super primer is aimed at getting you in the know about this all new series that is expanding upon one of the biggest anime franchises of all time.

What is Dragon Ball Super?

Dragon Ball Super is a brand new anime series continuing on from the events of Dragon Ball Z. Unlike Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Super will not be an anime adaptation of a manga. Rather, a manga is being produced that releases after the show airs. The story of Dragon Ball Super is being written by original series creator Akira Toriyama and being produced by Toei Animation.

When does the new series take place?

Dragon Ball Super takes place 6 months after the defeat of Majin Buu on the Sacred World of the Kais. That means the events of Super start before both Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’, and even before the 2008 Jump Special Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return which the events there in occurred 2 years after the defeat of Majin Buu!

dragon-ball-super-screenshot-02

Who are these Fat Beerus and Female Whis characters?

Nothing is known about these two characters except that they are new to the Dragon Ball Universe and Fat Beerus’ name is Champa, a pun on Champagne like how Beerus and Whis are puns on the alcoholic beverages beer and whisky.

How does Dragon Ball Super fit in with the events of Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’?

It seems that Dragon Ball Super will be incorporating the events of both movies but will be retelling them in its own way. A special message from Akira Toriyama stated

“Dragon Ball Super” is a complete continuation of the Majin Buu story arc. It’s got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the “Battle of Gods” arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the “Revival of ‘F’” arc where Frieza comes back to life, and then, I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They’ll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I’ll keep the rest a secret, but they’re chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!

Since it’s another universe, loads of new characters will turn up. I’ll do my best to draw the tons of character designs necessary, so I’m looking forward to this too.”

Of course based solely on this statement it isn’t definitive that Super will not ‘work around’ the movies, but seeing as Beerus is stated to be asleep for 39 years in Battle of Gods which takes place 5 years after the defeat of Majin Buu, the events of Battle of Gods already don’t fit with those of Super.

dragon-ball-super-promo-02

What is Universe 6?

Not much is known about Universe 6 other than it will contain plenty of new characters. Beerus stated in Battle of Gods that there are 12 universes, all with their own God of Destruction. This of course could be changed as the events of Battle of Gods seems to be altered to fit in with Dragon Ball Super.

What about Dragon Ball GT?

As it stands it seems near impossible for Dragon Ball GT to fit in with the series canon and will probably be more unlikely once Super ends its run. Some fans are hoping the events of Dragon Ball GT will turn out to be what happens in one of the other universes.

How many episodes will be in Dragon Ball Super?

As for now we have no definitive answer but some sites have listed 100 episodes as the duration of the series, however this is most likely a placeholder number.

dragon-ball-super-screenshot-03

When does Dragon Ball Super air?

Dragon Ball Super airs in Japan on Sunday mornings at 09:00 GMT +9.

Where can I watch it?

Unfortunately the only place to watch Dragon Ball Super as of now is if you live in Japan. It was expected Funimation would pick up the rights to launch a Simulcast that would allow people all over the world to watch it with subtitles as the show aired in Japan but this has not happened as of yet. There is still hope this will happen in the near future and that all episodes aired previous to the Simulcast launch will be added. Of course this is the modern age we live in so finding a place to watch the episode online once it airs in Japan isn’t exactly a hard task.

Kermdinger Studios to Unveil Boondogl This August

Kermdinger Studios to Unveil Boondogl This August

First Platform Agnostic Video Games Marketplace to Offer Games Without Downloads or Plugins

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – July 7, 2015 – Video Game development startup Kermdinger Studios, Inc., announced today that Boondogl, the first platform agnostic video games marketplace, will be available starting this August. Using native web technology, Boondogl is a web-driven storefront that allows gamers to buy and play their favorite high quality games on any device without the need for downloads or plugins. After launching this August on PC and Mac, Boondogl will arrive on mobile and console via the Boondogl app by next spring.

Powered by native web technology such as HTML5, Javascript and WebGL, Boondogl will work on virtually any device to allow cross-platform play of popular console, computer and mobile games. For gamers this means they can purchase a game once and have it playable across all their systems. Additionally, Boondogl provides developers an easy solution to bringing their titles to the multitude of available platforms by converting titles only once into native web technology in order to be playable on any device.

“The video game hardware landscape is fragmented and because of this developers have to spend time and resources bringing games to multiple hardware systems,” said Anthony Palma, co-founder of Kermdinger Studios. “With Boondogl we’re aiming to combat this fragmentation by providing a centralized, platform-agnostic gaming experience that will not only save developers costs and time, but also allow gamers to play their favorite games on any device without the need for downloads.”

To keep up with the latest Boondogl news, please visit the official website or follow Boondogl on Twitter or Facebook.

AR-K: The Great Escape To Launch July 14

AR-K: The Great Escape To Launch July 14

Upcoming chapter by Greg Rucka unveils the mystery of Alicia’s Golden Sphere

La Coruña, Spain–June 7, 2015--Gato Salvaje Studio, a Spanish indie developer dedicated to crafting engaging adventure games, announced today that the third chapter of

AR-K  will launch Tuesday, July 14 on Steam. The witty 3D point-and-click adventure, penned by critically acclaimed comic book writer Greg Rucka, follows the adventures of Alicia, a former cop and current journalism student, as she investigates the origin of the strange Golden Sphere that has turned her life upside down.

A brand-new trailer teasing the dramatic final chapter has also been released, and can be viewed on the game’s Steam page at http://store.steampowered.com/app/368890/

AR-K is a classical point and click adventure with an updated twist. Alicia Van Volish is a former cop and current journalism student who awakens after a one-night stand with a terrible hangover and a lot of questions: How much did she drink? Did she really take that guy home with her? What was his name? And what, exactly, is the Golden Sphere, the mysterious object that seems the source of all Alicia’s woes?

While Episode 3 may be enjoyed on its own without having experienced the previous chapters, players can get caught up on Alicia’s story in the first two installments on PC, iOS or Android at http://gatosalvajestudio.com/ Development of AR-K was made possible via a highly successfully crowdfunding effort on Kickstarter, which raised over $100,000 for the project.

Alicia is brought to life through the voice talents of Ash Sroka, widely known for her role as Tali Zorah in the Mass Effect Trilogy. Episode 3 and the upcoming final installment of AR-K are written by Greg Rucka, known for his work on such comics as Action Comics, Batwoman, Detective Comics, Wolverine and the miniseries Superman: World of New Krypton. Greg’s ability to write smart female characters makes him the perfect candidate to convey Alicia’s caustic wit and edginess.
