Overview

When one thinks of a video game enemy they often picture a standard opponent that they will be facing off against hundreds of before they inevitably face off against a boss at the end of a dungeon or area before finally making it to the final boss. Well what happens when the final boss is standing right in front of you right at the beginning of the game and you are tasked with continually facing off against this monstrous creature throughout the game at regular intervals? Then you have a game called Trillion: God of Destruction and now that the title has been released in the West is it worth picking up?

Story

For millennia the Underworld has existed and faced very few threats but all that is at an end. A being known as the “God of Destruction” has awoken from its slumber and has appeared before the gates of the Underworld in order to consume everything in its path. This beast known as Trillion, thanks to its trillion health points, is challenged by Zeabolos, his army, and his beloved brother. With Zeabolos being the Great Overlord that rules over the Underworld, he initially doesn’t take the creature seriously until it utterly destroys his army, slays his brother, and tears Zeabolos apart in no time at all.

trillion-god-of-destruction-screenshot-(21)

On the edge of death, Zeabolos is saved by a mysterious woman named Faust who states that she knows of a way to defeat Trillion and that she will assist him at the cost of his soul. Unfortunately thanks to the fact that Zeabolos’ revival resulted in his body being held together in manner similar to a zombies, he is incapable of directly facing off against Trillion. As such his female Overlords, all of whom are his allies either through blood relation or longtime friendships, must take up the mantle in order to destroy this creature and whoever manages to strike the killing blow will be named as the next Great Overlord of the Underworld.

Thanks to a dangerous miasma that surrounds Trillion that only Zeabolos can withstand, he must give his ring to one of his Overlords, all of whom are styled after a deadly sin, who must be trained up in order to stand up to the beast on her own. Trillion: God of Destruction is a story about loss and in fact that is something you will very likely end up doing more than a few times. When you begin the game players will choose from the Overlords that they have at the time and focus on training them which in turn allows the story to develop through them.

trillion-god-of-destruction-(60)

As you train your chosen Overlord through the maze of menus that we will go over shortly, players will often be able to give them presents and interact with them through conversations. Interacting with the girls marks some of the best parts of the game and also the most heartrending thanks to the nature of this game. Players will be learning about the girls as they develop beyond their initial archetype and become people that you generally will want to keep alive, only to really be training them for a battle that they will most likely die in.

There are multiple endings that can be achieved and thanks to a New Game+ system that allows players to transfer a majority of their bonuses into the next game, it is possible to see these endings at a bit of a quicker pace and hopefully see your favorite girls make it to the end, but be prepared for a lot of suffering as they die off and have to be replaced with a new vassal that must once again enter the suffering grinding gauntlet that makes up Trillion: God of Destruction’s gameplay.

Gameplay

If you aren’t a fan of spending time grinding then you will want to steer clear of Trillion: God of Destruction as this is a game that focuses almost entirely on that aspect. You see, in-between battles players will be given a number of days that they will need to spend training before facing off against Trillion once again and outside of spending time actually talking with the girls and seeing story events to develop Affection points, the rest of it will be partaking in various events.

trillion-god-of-destruction-screenshot-(36)

Players will gain points that power up their chosen Overlords abilities such as attack, defense, intelligence, health, speed, and more and each of these can be trained through the menus. The main screen where these tasks can be chosen is actually where players will be spending most of their time since they will need to make sure that their Overlord can at least stand up a bit to a being capable of delivering high damage and having a trillion hit point pool.

Now one system that is a bit unique is the aforementioned Affection system. These affection points are earned by finding items that Zeabolos can give to the girls or talk with them to raise their affection levels. When in combat the affection points of a character are a separate meter from their HP and MP meter and prior to the character suffering any HP or MP loss they will drain the affection meter first. This means that prior to facing off against Trillion you’ll want to bond with your character so they can tank damage and even have the choice to simply run away if things start to go south too quickly, as affection points can also be used to flee from battle.

Trillion-God-of-Destruction-screenshot-(49)

One of the best ways to train your character is to eventually enter the “Valley of Swords” which is a dungeon filled with smaller enemies as well as plenty of items and equipment that will help you survive longer. The only issue is here is that players are given a certain number of turns to escape from the area and if you manage to run out of turns before exiting, you will lose everything that you have gathered. Another noteworthy feature is the ability to engage with a combat dummy prior to actually facing Trillion, allowing players a chance to test their skills before actually fighting the boss since losing to a dummy does not result in a character’s death.

Once you do end up fighting Trillion, players must travel across a very large grid-based battlefield where they will need to face off against not only Trillion but any minions that he has summoned, traps that have been laid out, and any “AoE” spells that are being used. This means that rapid movement is often the difference between life and death and since there are a number of weakpoints that can be targeted on Trillion as well as abilities that players can unlock for Overlords that allow them to deal additional damage, finally facing the boss presents numerous tactical opportunities in a high-stress situation.

trillion-god-of-destruction-screenshot-(27)

If an overlord does die in combat, her loss will not be in vain as she will be able to use a death skill that can allow her to perform various actions such as sealing off a body part of Trillion for the next fight or helping in some form. When defeated, most of that Overlords abilities and stats will be transferred into Zeabolos’ ring and will buff up the next Overlord it is given to. This means that while it is entirely possible through proper training to try and keep your favorite characters alive, the chances are highly likely that you’ll either end up losing them or even going so far as failing outright before actually taking Trillion down, especially since he grows exponentially stronger the weaker he becomes.

While this generally wouldn’t be an issue for many games of this nature, the fact that the training elements in Trillion: God of Destruction are so incredibly repetitive makes grinding an unenjoyable chore. Small mistakes can lead to an easy failure and thanks to the combat system in the game featuring poorly implemented movement and camera controls. Since any time your character moves the enemies move as well, this means that you may very well end up wasting precious moments simply struggling with the game’s poorly implemented movement system.

Visuals & Audio

In many ways Trillion: God of Destruction is presented more as a visual novel than an actual RPG as players will be spending most of their time looking at menus and talking sequences between the characters than they actually are on the battlefield. Thankfully the character designs do a great job representing the personalities of each girl and the CG events scattered throughout the story are incredibly well done with a vibrant color palette. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the game’s battle sequences as the characters here are only serviceable at best and occasionally suffers from slowdown when large skills are used.

Trillion-God-of-Destruction-screenshot-(62)

As far as the game’s soundtrack, the title supports a great mixture of tunes to fit the nature of the game and sports an amazing sounding battle theme. Idea Factory International has released Trillion: God of Destruction with both the English and Japanese voice track and both voice tracks are handled incredibly well, though oddly enough the audio balancing here is somewhat off with the English track as some characters are so soft-spoken sounding that I had to turn up the volume simply to hear what they were saying only for the rest of the characters to then sound incredibly loud.

Overall

Trillion: God of Destruction features a unique premise that ends up dividing the game between strategy styled combat and visual novel style character training. The Overlords are surprisingly well-fleshed out characters and help keep things interesting while training them for battle which helps alleviate the feeling of repetitiveness a bit while the combat system keeps players on their toes as they prepare but thanks to some poorly implemented systems, combat can be far more frustrating than it should be.  As such, fans who are interested in the premise will be treated to interesting storylines following the Overlords but must be prepared for an immense amount of grinding and some unsatisfying combat mechanics.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN WITH MARIO & SONIC AT THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES™, COMING TO Wii U ON JUNE 25

New Duel Events allow you to unleash power-ups and chaos on opponents as you vie for Olympic Glory

4th May 2016 – The worlds of Mario and Sonic come together once more for 17 exciting events in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, arriving on Wii U in Australia and New Zealand on June 25. Taking place in Rio de Janeiro, host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, the latest instalment of the series features over 30 playable characters, the ability to play as your Mii, and plenty of frantic four-player multiplayer action to enjoy with friends and family, including the new Duel Events, which give familiar sports a classic Mario & Sonic twist.

Rugby Sevens is one of three sports, along with Football and Beach Volleyball, that comes with its own Duel Event. The action’s powered-up, familiar items like Bullet Bills and Chaos Emeralds are allowed, and chaotic multiplayer matches are guaranteed. In Duel Events, players build up Duel Points by pulling off actions like tackling, spiking or shooting, then have to score a try, point or goal to add these Duel Points to their total score. Last-gasp turnarounds and severe drubbings on an unprecedented scale await!

Players can also vie for gold medals in classic Olympic Games events like Boxing, Archery, and the 100m sprint, using either the Wii U GamePad in single-player, or with Wii Remote button controls in multiplayer. All events take place in venues modelled after the real-life venues of the Olympic Games, bringing an authentic touch of Rio to the proceedings. Rhythm Gymnastics (with clubs) and Rugby Sevens – the latter making its debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – are also playable for the first time.

Alongside the new events comes the new Heroes Showdown mode: an addition for only the most dedicated Mario and Sonic fans out there, as it’s unlocked after achieving first place or being in the winning team in all 17 player events in single-player, or by winning the Bronze Medal more than seven times in tournaments. Competitors join up with Team Mario or Team Sonic and battle it out against the other side in knockout rounds. Events are picked at random for a real test of all-around skill, and each round a character from the losing team is knocked out until either all members are knocked out, or Team Captains Mario and Sonic are eliminated, so it’s all on the line to be the last team standing.

Over 30 playable characters from the Mario and Sonic series appear, including some that are exclusive to certain events. Sporting hopefuls can put themselves in the game as their Mii, and take part in tournaments for each event. Coins and rings earned through gameplay can be used to buy additional costumes from the Mario series or Sonic series respectively.

Additional special tournaments can be accessed through the use of amiibo figures, which can be used after completing 25 tournaments. By tapping a Sonic amiibo to the Wii U GamePad, the Sonic League will begin, pitting a player’s Mii against characters from the Sonic series. Meanwhile, the Mario League can be played if any Mario amiibo is tapped, and will see players squaring off against characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. A special Mario or Sonic Mii costume will be earned for winning their respective leagues, while scanning in any other amiibo will reward the player with either coins or rings to use at the Item Stand for a chance to win additional costumes.

With 14 official Olympic Games disciplines and three Duel Events, over 30 playable characters and the ability to play as your Mii, and local multiplayer for up to four players, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games™ will offer everyone a chance to go for the gold when it comes to Wii U on June 25!

Beyond the Boundary: Complete Collection Review

Beyond the Boundary: Complete Collection
Studio: Kyoto Animation

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)

Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview

Over the years Kyoto Animation has earned quite a reputation for themselves with their adaptations of light novels and manga series. More often than not these series become quite popular though there are a few that end up slipping through the cracks. Now that Sentai Filmworks has released Beyond the Boundary in the West, is this a series that fans will be remembering for some time to come?

Story

If most people saw someone who looked as if they were preparing to jump off the roof of a building they would generally try to intervene or call for help in order to prevent the person from harming themselves. Rarely however is it because they look so cute in the glasses that they are wearing nor do their efforts result in the potential jumper stabbing them with a red sword. That is what happens to Akihito Kanbara however as he meets Mirai Kuriyama one day after school.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (1)

While this would generally be the end of the story, the world of Beyond the Boundary is filled with plenty of strange creatures that most people know little about and it just so happens that Kanbara is one of these oddities. He is a half-human and half-yomu, yomu being supernatural creatures that appear throughout the world and thanks to this unique nature Akihito appears to be immortal.

On the other side of the spectrum Mirai Kuriyama is a rookie Spirit World Warrior who keeps to herself thanks to the fact that she is the last descendent of a family that has been called a cursed bloodline. You see, Mirai’s red blade comes from her “gift” for being able to control her own blood as a weapon and thanks to this ability she has been shunned by the rest of the supernatural world.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (3)

After this chance meeting, Mirai continues to attack Akihito thanks to him never being able to truly die from her attacks and slowly the pair begin to open up with one another and even go so far as to work together in order to help Mirai take down yomu since not only does doing so help her earn some money, but eventually allows her to conquer an enemy from her past. However all is not always as it seems in the Spirit Warrior world and after an extremely close call reveals that those who appear close to Akihito aren’t exactly his friends and that the yomu half that he is keeping inside of him is beyond anything that the world has seen before, viewers are in for an interesting albeit somewhat stunted story.

One of the best aspects of Beyond the Boundary is the relationship between Akihito and Mirai as the pair begin with a rather awkward and comical relationship as she clumsily tries to take him down as practice while he avoids her in numerous ways and as the story progresses we see these both of these characters develop as they learn about one another’s hidden natures and work to help one another. Thanks to the pacing of the series, these developments appear fairly scattered and even seem to vanish completely at times as the tone flips between dramatic and psychological to simply delivering what one would guess as filler content as a comedic method to try and help show a separate side to the supporting cast and the main pair.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (4)

As for that supporting cast, Beyond the Boundary features a number of enjoyable side characters in the form of Mitsuki, Hiromi, and to a lesser extent Ai. The former two characters are guards to keep an eye on Akihito but despite this the two rarely act cold towards him and in fact appear to be his closest friends while Ai serves as the cuter side-character who is also a yomu and interacts with everyone like normal, going to show that co-existence is indeed possible.

Despite the fact that these characters fit rather well with the main pair, it feels like their inclusion isn’t handled in the best way possible as the middle part of the series tries to help develop the supporting cast while also providing some comedy thanks to the strange cases the group takes on but unfortunately none of this really helps make the side characters stand out in any way nor make them any more interesting than they initially come off. This becomes a bigger problem than it should be thanks to the fact that most of these smaller developments feel incredibly rushed and while comedy works well in a series such as this to help offset the dramatic swings the series can take, it simply isn’t handled well enough to work most of the time.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (6)

Of course everything starts to accelerate towards a conclusion near the end of the series and thankfully I will say that Beyond the Boundary does take enough time to actually handle this conflict well by not rushing the developments that take place. Sadly it is a bit predictable considering viewers can guess from the get-go what is going to happen what with both main characters possessing very powerful opposing abilities. That being said, although the ending series of events do come off as predictable the writers have handled it in a personal way that actually portrays how high the stakes are and just how important it is that the main characters are successful.

Visuals

One of the best aspects of Beyond the Boundary is how great this series looks. Thanks to the high production values of this series viewers are in for quite a treat as the character designs are well handled and all of the animation is extremely fluid. This really pays off during the many action sequences that take place throughout the title with well-choreographed movements and great attention to detail making sure that no shortcuts are taken.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (2)

As mentioned before, the character designs are nicely presented with the focus often being on making sure the characters look cute with Mirai being the most memorable of the group thanks to her smaller stature fitting her initial nervous personality.  The backgrounds are highly detailed and are nicely varied considering the many unique locations the characters end up with when dealing with the yomu.

Audio

With the release of Beyond the Boundary in the West Sentai Filmworks has decided to include an English dub track to go along with the Japanese voice work. The English cast does a good job with their roles with Krystal LaPorte’s handling of Mirai and Monica Rial’s Mitsuki Nase being the best two examples as their voice acting fits the character personalities perfectly.

beyond-the-boundary-screenshot- (5)

As far as the soundtrack is concerned, there is a nice mix of dark themes that work into the action scenes and keep the tension high while the more light-hearted tracks used during comedic scenes are rather forgetful. The opening theme “Kyoukai no Kanata” by Minori CHihara works well while the ending theme “Daisy” by Stereo Dive Foundation is a satisfying closing theme.

Extras

With the standard Blu-ray release of Beyond the Boundary Sentai Filmworks has included their standard clean opening and closing animations as well as Japanese promos and trailers for other products from Sentai Filmworks. Alongside these standard inclusions the company has also included five short “Idol Trial” episodes that run about six minutes each. These shorts are presented in Japanese only and help provide some extra humor that is fairly hit and miss.

Overall

Beyond the Boundary may tell a story that anime fans can predict quite easily but it does so in a rather pleasant manner. There are some faults along the way as the mid-point of the release features some of the weakest moments but thankfully the rest of the story prior and after these episodes help make up for it. With some fantastic looking animation providing fluid fight sequences and characters that, although many are underdeveloped, help add some emotional impact to the final events of the series. Beyond the Boundary may not try anything new but does a great job telling its own story.

With the beta for Grand Kingdom kicking off today what better way to celebrate than with a brand new trailer focusing on showing off the game’s online system. NIS America has released that such trailer and you can check it out below. For those who are participating in the beta they will be able to access four character classes in the form of Fighter, Hunter, Witch, and Medic, take on two complete quests from the single player campaign, and fight in three online war battles per day.

Save files including squad members and mercenary money will be carried over into the full release but the online war will be reset when the title is released on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on June 21 in North America and June 17 in Europe.
