SIDE WITH THE FAMILY WHO RAISED YOU, DEFEND YOUR TRUE HOMELAND, OR FORGE YOUR OWN PATH IN FIRE EMBLEM: FATES, COMING TO NINTENDO 3DS ON MAY 21

SIDE WITH THE FAMILY WHO RAISED YOU, DEFEND YOUR TRUE HOMELAND, OR FORGE YOUR OWN PATH IN FIRE EMBLEM: FATES, COMING TO NINTENDO 3DS ON MAY 21

DLC Map Packs 1 & 2 will provide new content throughout the year

29th April 2016 – The fate of two nations is in your hands when Fire Emblem Fates releases exclusively for Nintendo 3DS family systems on May 21 in Australia and New Zealand. The latest in the long-running series of strategic turn-based RPGs will see players choosing to side with the Hoshido family they were born to, the Nohr family they were raised by, or forge their own path in one of three unique campaigns in Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation respectively.

Fire Emblem Fates is the latest title in the franchise following 2013’s acclaimed Fire Emblem: Awakening, and will release on May 21 following the series’ best-ever launch in the United States earlier this year. Each entry in the Fire Emblem series spans across different nations and continents in the same world at various points in its history, and sees the player take control of an ever-growing army as they attempt to prevent war and restore peace to their realm.

For the first time in the Fire Emblem series, the player’s customisable avatar, Corrin, is the lead protagonist. Raised as royalty in the Nohr Kingdom, their life is forever changed when they discover that they were actually born to the Hoshido royal family, but were kidnapped as a child by the evil Nohrian King Garon. However, both nations are on the brink of war, and Corrin must now choose whether to help defend the kingdom they were born to, help reform the regime they grew up in, or reject both sides of the conflict in an attempt to broker peace between nations.

Each path that Corrin can choose – protecting Hoshido in Birthright, siding with Nohr in Conquest, or refusing to choose in Revelation – will change the story in significant ways, providing wholly different Fire Emblem experiences each suited to different play styles and player experience levels. Those who play Birthright will be able to take on the Challenge Maps, which allow players to earn experience and money whenever they choose, much like Fire Emblem: Awakening. As such, this path is ideal for newcomers, or those for whom Awakening was their first experience with the series. Conquest, however, contains a different cast of recruitable characters and does not have these Challenge Maps, resulting in more limited character growth and finances, and thus a tougher challenge more akin to older games in the Fire Emblem series, and is therefore most recommended for franchise veterans. The download-only Revelation path represents the ultimate challenge of the three paths, and will reveal the truth behind the war, and is thus recommended especially for those who have finished one or both of the other story paths. Revelation will also include the Challenge Maps and allows recruitment of all but two characters from the previous two campaigns, with one new character exclusive to the Revelation story.

Battles in the Fire Emblem series often see players take their small force of recruited soldiers against ever-increasing armies as they attempt to restore peace to their nation. Combat is turn-based, requiring careful planning as any false moves or failed attacks will see units become exposed and vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. Making strategy even more important is the fact that, should one of the player’s units be cut down in battle in Classic Mode, then they’ll either be killed off for good, or will become too injured to ever return to the battlefield to aid you.

The release of Fire Emblem: Awakening saw the introduction of Casual Mode, where fallen characters are revived after each battle. Fire Emblem Fates introduces Phoenix Mode, where any fallen allies will revive after each in-game turn, providing a new, easier difficulty level for newcomers and players who want to concentrate on the story. With Phoenix Mode, Casual Mode, and Classic Mode, players of all skill levels will be able to cut through the combat in a way that best suits their abilities.

Those familiar with the Fire Emblem series may also find themselves approaching combat in ways they haven’t before. By accessing Dragon Veins on the map, new pathways can be created and travelled across, while the terrain can be changed in order to aid progress or hinder the enemy, opening up unprecedented tactical possibilities. The weapons triangle – where axes beat lances, lances beat swords, and swords beat axes – has also been expanded to include magic, bows, and additional weapons, making careful planning and strategy even more important if you wish to keep your allies out of harm’s way.

After each battle, players can spend time in their base of operations, which allows them to interact with recruited characters, bolster their defences to keep out invaders, and build new structures, some of which are exclusive to the Hoshido or Nohr sides and allow the purchase of new weapons and items. Friends can face off against each other in turn-based combat in both online and local multiplayer; each side can take five of their favourite units into battle to see who the ultimate strategist is.

Meanwhile, tapping in* the Ike, Lucina, Marth or Robin amiibo will cause these heroes of past Fire Emblem games to appear in the player’s castle. After the third time these heroes have visited your castle, they can be challenged in combat. Should you prove to be the superior strategist, then they will join your force and can be used as an ally in future battles.

Both Birthright and Conquest are wholly different campaigns that contain unique challenges, and by accessing the Branch of Fate on the main menu, it’s possible to purchase the opposing path at a reduced cost, as well as Revelation when it launches on June 10, using Nintendo eShop funds. Strategists yet to decide which version they want to play through can find out more about these games in two Developer’s Commentary videos, A Tale of Two Families – Birthright and A Tale of Two Families – Conquest.

Those who want even more content have the option of purchasing Fire Emblem Fates Map Pack 1 via the Dragon’s Gate, accessible after the completion of Chapter 6, from May 21. The eleven downloadable maps that make up this pack will be released periodically from launch through to July, providing a series of extra challenges, opportunities to gain more experience and money, and even recruit a new character. Late July will also see the launch of Map Pack 2 in Australia and New Zealand, which will include another six downloadable maps, providing plenty of content to keep strategy fans busy throughout winter. An additional free piece of content will also be made available during the distribution of each Map Pack.

Fire Emblem Fates will also release as a Limited Edition, featuring a Game Card with all three story paths included, an artbook, a landscape dual-sided poster and an exclusive SteelBook® case. This Limited Edition also lets players get their hands on the Revelation story path before it releases on Nintendo eShop at the later date of June 10. The New Nintendo 3DS XL Fire Emblem Fates Edition** will also launch in Australia and New Zealand May 21, providing the perfect opportunity for budding strategists to join the ranks of Nintendo 3DS owners and experience the latest entries in the Fire Emblem series. Owners of New Nintendo 3DS systems will also be able to purchase new Cover Plates that feature the warring families of Nohr and Hoshido.

My Nintendo members will also be able to exchange 20 Gold Points for a 10% discount for Fire Emblem Fates ahead of its launch, with the discount applied for purchases from Nintendo eShop between May 21 and June 16. Those purchasing Fire Emblem Fates via Nintendo eShop in the first four weeks after launch will also receive a free download code for the Two Kingdoms theme.

Fight for your friends in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, fight for your family in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, or fight for the truth in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation: the choice is yours. Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest for Nintendo 3DS family systems launch in Australia and New Zealand on May 21, and Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation will arrive on Nintendo eShop on June 10.

BUILD YOUR BUSINESS ON MARS – SOREN JOHNSON’S OFFWORLD TRADING COMPANY RELEASES TODAY

BUILD YOUR BUSINESS ON MARS – SOREN JOHNSON’S OFFWORLD TRADING COMPANY RELEASES TODAY

Plymouth, MI. – April 28, 2016 – Today, Stardock and Mohawk Games released Offworld Trading Company, the economic strategy game from Civilization IV lead designer Soren Johnson.

Set in the future, humanity has begun to colonize on Mars to try and seek new fortunes. Players take on the role of an investor trying to take control of the Martian market and take over their competition.

Offworld Trading Company is a new direction for real-time strategy where money is both your deadliest weapon and your toughest defense. With a campaign, skirmishes and daily challenges, players can enjoy a game by themselves at their leisure. If they want to connect with their friends online, the multiplayer mode can host up to 8 people for a knock-down, drag out economic brawl or they can join in ranked ladder games to see who the world’s best businessman really is.

“This game has been an idea I’ve had for a long time,” said Soren Johnson, lead designer for Offworld Trading Company and president of Mohawk Games. “I knew I wanted to create a unique real time strategy game, and when I started looking at all the possibilities, Mars just made sense for our setting.”

The real-time, player-driven market is the foundation of the game, allowing players to buy and sell resources and materials – even the food and water that the colonists need to survive. Players will need to build up enough capital to gain access to the lucrative offworld markets so that they can buy out their rivals and claim the Martian economy for themselves. But, the battle isn’t limited to the board room. Players also have access to a black market that allows them to employ some more underhanded methods for victory, such as hiring pirate raiders, or hackers to disrupt production, or sending a covert electromagnetic pulse to an opponent’s base.

There are four major corporations in the game,” said Johnson, “and all of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. When you add this to other variables within the game – like a constantly fluctuating stock market – you’re looking at a new gameplay experience every time you play.”

Offworld Trading Company is now available on Steam or through Stardock. For more information about Offworld Trading Company, please visit www.offworldgame.com.

Experience an Extreme New Reality and the Adrenaline of the Ascent in “The Climb” from Crytek – Out Now on Oculus Rift

Crytek’s debut virtual reality game is available now from Oculus Home

Frankfurt am Main (Germany) April 28, 2016 – Bringing the thrilling sensation of extreme free solo rock climbing home to players everywhere, Crytek has announced that its debut virtual reality game, The Climb, is out now.

Launching for Oculus Rift, The Climb invites players into breathtaking virtual worlds to scale sheer cliff faces and explore rock climbing playgrounds inspired by real-life locations. To coincide with the game’s launch, Crytek has also shared details of The Climb’s third setting, Canyon, which joins Alps and the Asian-themed Bay location.

The newly-revealed environment takes inspiration from the landscapes of the Grand Canyon and draws upon wider natural and cultural cues from across the USA, combining iconic elements to create an immersive blend of sights, sounds, and adrenaline-pumping challenges. By night, fireworks from a music festival and howling coyotes accompany breathtaking ascents, while daylight reveals endless vistas marked by winding rivers, mysterious mine shafts, and jets performing dramatic formation flyovers. The heat will be on as players feel the scale of the environment, the vertigo of the height, and the challenge of the competition to achieve the best times on leaderboards.

The Climb launch trailer can be found here.

Complementing the main free solo rock climbing experience, The Climb features tutorials and a procedurally generated endless climbing wall to practice on, plus six intense bouldering routes to beat. Players can also use Tourist mode to explore each expansive environment with simplified game mechanics, perfect for discovering new routes, enjoying the scenery, and for demonstrating VR to friends and family for the first time. Finally, the game’s asynchronous multiplayer mode allows gamers to compete against other player’s ascents and send challenges to their friends.

To complete The Climb’s host of vertical challenges, players will have to master different grip types, balance speed against stamina, and discover routes and shortcuts. Ninety-nine achievements are up for grabs, as players unlock custom watches, gloves, and wristbands, while amazing visual payoffs act as a reward for accomplishing each ascent and demonstrating the jaw-dropping power of CRYENGINE and VR.

Executive Producer for The Climb, Elijah Dorman Freeman, said: “From the moment we started prototyping The Climb, we knew VR and rock climbing were a dream combination. The intense feeling of engaging in the world’s most extreme sport high above the ground is only possible in VR, and our team has gone to great lengths to replicate the tension and thrill of free solo climbing. With CRYENGINE and the Rift, we’ve been able to create a game that will challenge players to come back again and again, and build a virtual world like nothing they’ve seen or experienced before.”

The Climb is out now, exclusively for Oculus Rift, and launches with a price of $49.99 on Oculus Home.

InSomnia RPG has returned to Kickstarter to secure the funds required to complete the game

SAMARA, Russia – April 27, 2016 – Today InSomnia, a dystopian dieselpunk RPG, from indie developer Studio MONO, has returned to Kickstarter to secure the funds required to complete the game.

“It was no easy decision to return to Kickstarter. After evaluating the progress made on the project, thanks to the funds from our previous Kickstarter campaign and the over £100,000 we’ve spent out of our own pockets, we’ve got to a point where we need additional funding.  The money’s for one final push to take the game past the current Prologue Chapter we have released to the public.” said Anatoliy Guyduk, lead developer at Studio MONO.

“We switched from Ogre 3D to UE4, and are thrilled with the improvements in both the visuals and the performance of the game. The Prologue Chapter, which is up to four hours long –  depending on how much you explore and do, will show you how passionate we all are for InSomnia. We hope that you’ll support us in our dieselpunk inspired journey, one last time!”

InSomnia is dystopian vision, set in a murky, retro-futuristic style. The game takes place on a colossal, semi-deserted interplanetary space station. Having left their dying planet behind, this space metropolis, along with its inhabitants, has been moving towards the distant, ghost-like Evacuation Point for the past 400 years, where the descendants of the once great people hope to start over the history of mankind.

Game Features
•Multi-layered role playing game
•Dark retro-futuristic setting
•Hardcore gameplay
•Non-linear story
•Colossal space metropolis to explore
•Realistic combat system
•Generated quests and events
•Atmospheric ambient soundtrack

The Wrong in Wrestling: The New Media

reigns-01

I recently went down to Dallas and had a fantastic Wrestlemania weekend. It was my first trip, and one of the best attributes of the journey was the interaction with other fans. Of course, when you wait in those long lines at Axxess and Wrestlecon, you are going to get a lot of smarks, but I also had some stellar debates and conversations with a lot of people just like myself, who love the spectacle of professional wrestling but have drifted away compared to the days of yore. What happened? When did the suspension of disbelief become filled with cynicism? Instead of talking about what we love, us wrestling fans spend most of our days speaking on what we disapprove of, whether it be talent, storylines, and so on. The real question is, why has the WWE got this point where we as the viewers go in circles trying to find that one bad seed in a television product that still manages to keep us entertained enough to continue to tune in every week?

wwe-fans-01

There are so many directions to point a finger at as to why the WWE doesn’t quite have that same satisfaction that it used to. I mean, Vince has tried to better the product and that does show. Triple H has done wonders with NXT and we are finally seeing some new talent flesh out the old, creating a fresh and crisp atmosphere each week with a little more unpredictability. However, when you love something it is still ok to critique it, and fans rip apart the very brand they loyally support every single day. That conversation is now so loud that we hear it in crowd chants, vlogs, and all throughout social media. I am just one person who has had a love of the business since the dawn of the Attitude Era. I am in no way a “God of the fans”, nor am I a smark – but I can still rewatch old episodes of Raw and find myself much more captivated by the years of 1998 through 2007. This isn’t about my knowledge or own preferences though, it is about what I feel is weighing down the enjoyment and awe that has been missing for a while, and is just now seeing a small resurgence since 2016 began. With that said, I think a breakdown of what is wrong with wrestling is in order, starting from the very worst thing to ever happen to wrestling.

The online media.

Literally everyone can blog now. Any person who has the least bit of skill can be a writer. Hell, I am proving that right now by using this platform to share my own opinions. There are two shades of color to speak about here though, as during the past few years with the popularity of Youtube and other quick video formats increasing, we have seen less articles about wrestling and more five minute clips that do very little to educate and enlighten the fans. I want to start speaking about this subject by talking about dirt sheets. I know that many professional wrestlers hate dirt sheets. These are the websites that try to get rumors about the talent swirling due to the presence of moles backstage to attract readers and revenue to their own market. The dirt sheet writer first became a popular format of journalism around twenty-five years ago, as these third party websites hosted stories about firings, hirings, and everything in-between. It was obvious quickly that Vince and several other promoters hated these websites, as there was a lot of controversy years ago due to several angles being spoiled ahead of big events. Fans were bringing in “Welcome Back _______!” signs for shows that did not announce the return of a big Superstar, and forums with wrestling talk soon turned into debating a performer’s personal life, rather than their in-ring abilities.

wwe-miz-morrison

During the past ten years, WWE have embraced change and have even featured sites like Bleacher Report and Wrestlezone on their program, as even bad publicity is good publicity. Smarks – or the “Smart Marks” were created from this format of news, as those fans took in this knowledge that felt exclusive and telling and combined it with their current perception of a staged product to feel as if they were more in the know. I get it, as I read dirt sheets for spoilers on Smackdown, and have done so for years to keep up to date with all of the future endeavors. Remember that nerve-wrecking time between 2004-2011 where the WWE began “spring cleaning” their roster? Anticipation is a human emotion we all have and if someone offers to give you a box with a surprise in it that you cannot open for seven long days, I would say that most wrestling fans (myself included) would rip it to shreds as feeling in the know of backstage affairs can be quite empowering – if not very destructive to the product as a whole. I have a love hate relationship with these websites. Some do fun fantasy bookings and actually pay tribute to careers and bring forth interviews that are absolutely fascinating. Go look up any shoot interview. It doesn’t matter which one. These tell-all productions are interesting for fans as we get to see the actual talent let us inside their lives for two to three hours at a time. I do however hate what a lot of newer websites have become. These little brands understand marketing. They have brilliant suits up top that know how to use the internet in their favor to create revenue. Welcome to the clickbait media that has infested the squared circle like the plague.

ambrose-rollins-01

I am not going to beat around the bush with names as my respect is an absolute zero for a lot of the organizations I am about to speak about. This generation’s addition of transparency to sports entertainment has done wonders for fans. We feel more connected to each Superstar. Some websites however have taken that gift and soiled it, producing nothing but garbage to infest the minds of current and future fans, turning what could be a valid opinion into meaningless knowledge that does nothing but hurt not only the Superstars, but all of the promotions they work for. Whatculture is the absolute biggest monster on the farm here. How did it get so bad? Well, the answer is quite easy. Step 1: Hire amateur comedians with basic wrestling knowledge and put them behind a keyboard and camera. Step 2: Utilize online monetization techniques known as “clickbait” by forming several daily top ten lists and catchy, negative headlines thrown in to attract an audience. Oh, by the way, get ready to refresh their ads ten times as you will be clicking through a slideshow for even the most mundane of topics. Seriously, you needed ten fucking pages to spew that vile? Step 3: Create videos that are laced with animations and flashy cuts to make the production come full circle, with the audience absorbing every word, hooking younger viewers as well as casual fans who are not fully into the product, so they stop watching what they love and come to you due to the sheer quantity of your content. This is the same mentality that had Youtubers who once had dwindling views hook onto the Minecraft/Let’s Play video train – so they could cash in on that group of young fans who would rather watch a game be played than actually play it.

money-01

I mean, who needs to even watch Raw or Smackdown anymore when they can watch Adam speak negatively for ten minutes in what is best compared to a pop-up video for idiots? I am sure the guy is nice in real life, and hats off to him and the crew at Whatculture for latching onto such an intuitive dragon that is making a lot of money, but seriously, where is the integrity? I have a few friends who are new to wrestling. One of which has watched off and on for years and is now starting to develop a passion for the business – meaning his brain is like a sponge for every video he sees for any product out there. I know it and understand where he is coming from, as I was the same way years ago with videos, DVDS, and early forums for wrestling fans. I think I read every issue of WWE Magazine from top to bottom as a teen. When you begin to have a passion for something, you want to learn everything you can about it. He is the one who introduced me to this channel called Whatculture that had millions of hits each day – and I thought why not. I mean, sure – I knew of Whatculture beforehand, as you cannot google a current topic in the wrestling world without one of their top ten clickbait links being first in the lot. The videos however I thought may have some passionate people behind them, but alas, I was wrong. These videos spend a lot of time talking about bullshit that doesn’t matter and can easily misguide the audience. I do not think any less of my friend for still enjoying them, as entertainment is all about preference. This piece however is about my feelings, so continuing on…

jeff-hardy-01

I think the absolute worst I have seen are the “Top Ten Things WWE Wants you to Forget About _____” series. With over one million views, there is a video that is constantly being promoted to myself while I browse, that is in this series about Jeff Hardy (gotta love recommendations). The thumbnail is literally his mugshot from his arrest, with a good portion of the video speaking about matches that have been highlighted as rookie spots for years (the WWE showed these many times, easily found on the WWE Network and official home video releases – aka NOT forgotten), along with a great deal of talk about Jeff’s drug use. Jeff is not even in the WWE I am pretty sure – so that definitely is not viable, plus – where do you get off thinking it is ok to tell your impressionable young audience about a personal issue from years ago? Sure, most fans know about Jeff, but at the same time, these videos are staining a legacy.

wwe-jeff-thumnail-01

Just look at a few of the thousands of comments from what are obviously younger viewers:

whatcomments-01

When Chyna died last week, many wondered why she didn’t get into the WWE Hall of Fame during her lifetime. Forget about the beefs, as this exact type of TMZ styled media coverage is the main reason why she did not get inducted. Look at the Stone Cold interview – Triple H speaks directly about Google and her name being a factor. People make bad decisions and you use your platform as an “entertainment vessel” to smash them back down so they can’t get back up? It isn’t just Jeff, or Chyna, and it isn’t just Whatculture – as I am simply highlighting them as other copycats have followed their trend of bullshit clickbait that does nothing but kill legacies and invade personal flaws THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL PRODUCT. This is just a sampling as I could go on for hours about the misinformation and misleading headlines at work here, that viewers are actually absorbing and using to define an individual that they know nothing about. It makes me, as a fan angry to see such fantastic talent spat on. This type of media takes what we get from dirt sheets and spins it into a quick headline and thumbnail, misinforming an audience by creating a context that makes fans think it is ok to criticize on subjects that it is clearly not.

edge-foley-01

When I spoke to fans in those lines, they were telling stories about past Wrestlemanias, those moments where we were on the edge of our seats as Edge flew through the ropes at Foley through a flaming table, and so many other great stories that just hearing them from another point of view brought a spark back that I had not felt in a long time. Then I get back to reality where fans are no longer experiencing these moments, but instead a machine that produces a hollow, flashy pill that is easy to consume – and because they had that pill, they now think they know. There is a reason why ratings are dropping, and it isn’t the talent. It isn’t the writing. It is the fact that top tens and index card reminders have been sculpted into a mirage of an article or video, lacking the substance and context that makes our sport great. Instead of spending time on that quick video or slideshow, go to an interview, or a book, or an actual match and take in the real thing. Indulge in random views, and promote passionate Youtubers who are telling stories and having those debates with energy in their voice. Sure, there is a lot that might be wrong with wrestling, but this one has an easy fix.
