Overview

Once more From Software is back with another journey filled with death and estus filled flasks. After spending some time away from the series to work on Bloodborne, the company has returned with Dark Souls III. When the company first began these types of titles with Demon’s Souls, few could have seen the popularity that the franchise would achieve and now that the third game in the Dark Souls series has been released, is it what fans are looking for?

Story

Players take on the role of an undead soldier known as the Ashen One and are informed that there is a threat to the first flame and if nothing is done, tit will be snuffed out. Set in the land of Lothric, players must travel the realm and find the Lords of Cinder who have neglected their duties and defeat them in order to potentially set what is going wrong with the world.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(11)

Now if this sounds fairly ambiguous then there is a good reason for that as we don’t really wish to spoil too much of Dark Souls III’s plot which, like previous games in the series, is spread thin and is mostly told through item history and various backstories that players will need to look into. In fact, this game feels as if it has the most fleshed out world in the series so far and that is thanks to a few aspects.

First and foremost, the side-quests that can be triggered in Dark Souls III are woven into the story in a better manner than they previously have been. Sure it is entirely possible to miss certain events which means that side-quest will just abruptly end and while there are fewer this time around, the way they are handled is much better and have some fairly substantial pay offs especially in regards to certain bosses and even the game’s ending.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(12)

The other aspect comes from the fact that Dark Souls III is tied so incredibly closely with the world from the first game in the series. This does mean that those haven’t played the first Dark Souls will miss out on specific references and even characters that may or may not still be around, but for those who have there are plenty of nostalgic moments that will be occurring throughout the game. The title even answers a number of mysteries that have been hanging over the series for some time, though attempting to figure out everything that the story has to tell will require some close examination of aspects of the world that are quite easy to miss, but help tell a tale in a way that only From Software can.

Gameplay

In many ways Dark Souls III takes advantage of the various advancements that the company has made throughout the series by taking mechanics from both of the first games and enhancing it. First of all a mechanic taken from Bloodborne comes in the form of being able to charge heavy attacks with your equipped weapon and now each weapon that the player will find as they progress throughout the game has the ability to perform certain weapon arts and many of these techniques allow players to chain together faster and more interesting combos though since most of these systems require the weapon be wielded with both hands, players will sacrifice their chance at blocking attacks with their shield without quickly swapping back and forth.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(13)

It is worth noting that some shields allow these weapon arts to be used while holding a weapon with one hand, but this is usually at the cost of being able to parry with said shield and considering the nature of being able to properly time parries in combat to turn the tide of battle instead of simply rolling out of the way to avoid harm, this comes at a price.

In similar fashion, players now also have to worry about a new gauge since magic spells no longer work on a charge system. Not only are players given your standard health healing Estus flask in Dark Souls III, they are also given an Ashen Estus flask at the start of the game. You see, the FP (Focus Point) system has returned and this means that not only are the aforementioned special attacks often a drain on this meter, any miracles, pyromancies, or other magical spells will drain this FP pool.  This means that while you may have spells attuned and the proper tool to cast said spells, if your FP pool is dry then it can only be refilled by resting at a bonfire or drinking from the blue Ashen Estus flask. With players now having the option to allot Estus charges between healing and FP, it often becomes a balancing act on how many times players will want to heal versus the spells they wish to cast or special moves they wish to use if they are more of a melee fighter than a spell cater.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(14)

Various other aspects of Dark Souls III remain fairly similar with the player’s equipment load reaching over 70% resulting in slower rolling and thankfully one aspect that appeared in Dark Souls II has been removed entirely. Standard enemies will no longer disappear from an area like the previous game as they will continually respawn no matter how many times they are slain. This is a boon for both those who wish to grind in case they get stuck and also for those attempting to get rare drop items such as powerful equipment or useful items from certain enemy types.

Covenant factions have also been changed a bit this time around as players will find that they are no longer locked in to a faction. It is worth noting that joining a certain faction can lock you out of a separate one entirely unless approached in a certain manner, but factions are now handled as banners that can be equipped and swapped out in the menu. This means that players can freely swap between how they wish to act in Dark Souls III’s co-op and PVP systems without much of an issue.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(15)

Speaking of that, unlike past games that featured things such as Humanity, Dark Souls III focuses on Embers. Players will find that after they defeat a boss, or use an Ember item, they will gain their Ember Form which provides a boost to their health bar and open them up for the game’s abundant online activities. You see, while Embered players can summon NPCs as well as other players into their world to help take on bosses or simply fight alongside one another and hostile players can also choose to invade you. Those who are without ember can roam without worry of invasion but you can invade others to try and steal their Ember as a hostile phantom.

Speaking of boss battles, players will be happy to hear that this game sports quite a number of unique feeling battles against all manners of creatures. There are various strategies and weak points to target as well as numerous optional bosses to take on if you feel like taking on a challenge, especially since one of the optional fights feels as if it is the toughest boss of the entire series. That being said, many of the bosses do seem to have smaller health pools than one would imagine and I found myself eliminating a few bosses without a single death.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(16)

This leads to another aspect that is both good and bad depending on how you look at it. Dark Souls III feels like it is perhaps the easiest experience of the series so far. Sure this game is still incredibly hard but the layout of the levels and bonfires often provide the player with numerous outs. Shortcuts are oddly spaced out, with some shaving off no more than a few seconds or slipping past a few foes while others can clear out entire sections of a map. Sure it is always possible that players may miss these shortcuts, but exploration is key in these games.

As far as the bonfires are concerned, there are often numerous checkpoints scattered throughout an area and many of these are so close together that you can literally see the next bonfire point from where you previously rested.  This lowers the tension of the game but thanks to the unpredictable nature of enemies, don’t think this is a cakewalk by any means.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(17)

While Dark Souls III features a number of great advancements in the series, there are still a number of drawbacks. Poor camera controls remain an issue that plagues the game while locking onto opponents is also frustratingly difficult thanks to the game constantly losing a lock on whenever your target decides to move any faster than a crawl. It also is worth noting that the game’s servers are still rather rough and although the issue did appear less often later in the game, that any time a disconnect with the server occurred the game would immediately boot back to the menu, leaving my character in a potentially deadly situation beyond my control.

Visuals & Audio

Although players will find that they are often returning back to the Firelink Shrine which serves as a central hub where players level up, purchase items, upgrade weapons, etc., the level design in Dark Souls III remains almost entirely connected. Every zone that players will be traveling through will have multiple paths to explore and while they will almost always lead to the same area, its finding the secrets and items hidden in these different paths that are part of the fun.

dark-souls-III-screenshot-(18)

In fact, the levels are so nicely designed that players may find themselves facing off against bosses in a completely different order than others since some foes can be completely bypassed if you don’t take a certain path at first. This level of detail to the level design is reflected with some amazing looking boss designs and standard foes as well, though it does feel like there could have been a bit more variety with standard enemies as some foes are repeatedly scattered throughout various stages.

The soundtrack in this game is also very fitting for what From Software is known for. This title features some extremely impressive sounding boss battle themes that add an extra layer of intensity to every fight. As for the voice work, the minimal amount that is presented is handled well by the voice actors.

Overall

Dark Souls III may be a bit easier than some were expecting and depending on how much of a challenge you find it, you’ll likely only clock in at around thirty hours before finishing the game the first time and that is even counting exploring optional areas and bosses, but this is a finely crafted experience that fans have been hoping for. With fine tuning to the combat system, extremely impressive level design, and plenty of nostalgia for longtime fans Dark Souls III is a game with so much detail that it is easy to get lost in while trudging onwards towards the next challenge.

MOVE OR DIE “VIEWERS VS STREAMERS” UPDATE WITH TWITCH INTEGRATION AVAILABLE TODAY

MOVE OR DIE “VIEWERS VS STREAMERS” UPDATE WITH TWITCH INTEGRATION AVAILABLE TODAY

Twitch Mode Adds Innovative Levels of Interaction – and Friendship-Ruination –
Between Livestreamers and Viewers

Bucharest, Romania – April 29, 2016 – The expression “the more, the merrier” has never been more apropos as indie game developers Those Awesome Guys announced today that the Move or Die “Viewers vs Streamers” free content update is available today. Packed full of goodness including the new Heavy Bullets game mode, Teleport Mutator, and playable characters like renowned indie game hero Shovel Knight, the update also adds the highly anticipated Twitch Mode, enabling – for the first time – Twitch viewers to play with livestreamers in Move or Die.
Watch the new Move or Die “Viewers vs Streamers” trailer HERE: youtube.com/watch?v=2ssI4F9Z1Qs

“Today is an exciting day, as now Twitch viewers can now influence and interact directly with their favorite livestreaming hosts in Move or Die,” states Nicolae Berbece, founder and lead developer of Those Awesome Guys. “With the new Viewers vs Streamers update, we included game modes only available in Twitch Mode that allow the Twitch audience to vote on different lasers firing, bombs dropping on specific areas, balancing platforms, deciding who is the most handsome player, and much more. We basically allow the Twitch chat members to decide which livestreamers live and die in Move or Die – and it’s going to be glorious!”
“Because our Game Developer Success initiative centers on working with developers who are interested in leveraging Twitch for their products, Move or Die’s integration of a dedicated Twitch mode is perfectly aligned with our vision for the industry,” said Marcus ‘djWHEAT’ Graham, Director of Programing, Twitch. “After seeing the positive reception to their Twitch mode at our recent PJSaltan of Stream tournament, it illustrates how keeping the Twitch community in mind should be a core part of game design.”

QWERTY Bombs is one of the unique Twitch Mode special events that viewers can control!

Move or Die “Viewers vs Streamers” free content update features:

  • Twitch Mode –When this mode is enabled, viewers will be able to vote for the game modes played, choose Mutator options, and directly influence gameplay in the following Twitch mode special game events:
    • Balance – Players spawn on a platform above a floor made out of death tiles, and chat members control the direction the platform is tipped, causing the players to slide off of it and die.
    • DropKill – Each player spawns on their own platform that is slowly descending into death tiles and viewers vote to raise a specific platform for each player delaying death.
    • Lasers – The top of the room is armed with huge lasers that are triggered by Twitch chat room votes. When enough votes are tallied, LASERS WILL FIRE!
    • QWERTY Bombs – A keyboard layout is mapped on the screen and the viewers can type any letter to launch a bomb that explodes in-game.
  • Heavy Bullets – New game mode where each player gets an empty gun and two bullets are randomly spawned. Collect the bullet in order to fire the gun, but watch out as the bullets have a “heavy” short-range trajectory and missing will allow the bullet to be picked up by an opponent!
  • Teleporter Mutator – The new Mutator enables a player to teleport a brief distance forward while in mid-air – even through doors and walls!
  • Added Playable Characters – Seven new characters including Glitch from Twitch, Tankman from NewGrounds, and Shovel Knight!
  • New Game Announcer – The melodious voice of Arin (EgoRaptor) from Game Grumps joins Move or Die Announcers list! Hi mom!

Move or Die is available now on Steam for $14.99. To learn more about Move or Die, please visit www.moveordiegame.com, ‘Like’ it on Facebook, and follow its development on Twitter @moveordiegame for all the latest developer updates and news.

NEW ADVENTURE TITLE, YESTERDAY ORIGINS, BRINGS TIME-SPANNING MYSTERY TO CONSOLE AND PC IN SEPTEMBER

NEW ADVENTURE TITLE, YESTERDAY ORIGINS, BRINGS TIME-SPANNING MYSTERY TO CONSOLE AND PC IN SEPTEMBER

Lovers of Adventure and Mystery can Cross the Globe and the Mists of Time in New Game for PS4, Xbox One, PC & Mac from Creators of Heralded Runaway Adventure Saga

PARIS – APRIL 29, 2016 – Today, game publisher Microïds announced that it plans to release Yesterday Origins, a new adventure game from Pendulo Studios, for Playstation®4, Xbox One, PC and Mac worldwide on September 29, 2016. Yesterday Origins invites lovers of adventure and mystery to cross the globe and the mists of time for a brand new title from the creators of the award-winning “Runaway” saga, drawing on Pendulo Studios’ 20 years of making adventure games with compelling storylines and memorable characters. The game can be glimpsed in new screens released today by Microïds and Pendulo Studios.

This is the first time a Pendulo Studios game has been developed in 3D, allowing unprecedented visual effects including dynamic shadowing and realistic physics for objects. It does however retain the very recognizable “cartoon” graphic style which has been part of their success for over a decade (the “Runaway” saga, “The Next Big Thing”…).

In Yesterday Origins, the main protagonists John Yesterday and his partner Pauline, immortals who own an antiques store in Paris, travel across the globe through multiple periods. The story takes place across the current and medieval eras, through a series of flashbacks. At the beginning of the game, a young John is imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition for witchcraft, just prior to the sequence of events that will change his life/lives forever. Although not yet able to resurrect at that point of his life, he has already attracted the attention and fallen foul of Church authorities due to his unusual ability to understand and speak every language he encounters.

Most of the adventure, however, is set in the present day, and the player assumes the roles of John and Pauline in turns as they seek the origins of immortality. Other members of the large cast (over 25 characters) have other plans for them… This will lead to a breathtaking chase across the world, from France to the United States, with stops in Spain, the Netherlands or the United Kingdom along the way.

The game is fully voice-acted and with an original musical score. The distinctive tone of the studio’s titles is present: mature, always offbeat, with a sprinkle of black humor. The interface and controls are equally suited to game controllers and to the mouse.

Yesterday Origins is an adventure game developed and co-produced by Microïds and Pendulo Studios,  with a launch date scheduled for September 29, 2016 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Mac, available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Polish.

SIDE WITH THE FAMILY WHO RAISED YOU, DEFEND YOUR TRUE HOMELAND, OR FORGE YOUR OWN PATH IN FIRE EMBLEM: FATES, COMING TO NINTENDO 3DS ON MAY 21

SIDE WITH THE FAMILY WHO RAISED YOU, DEFEND YOUR TRUE HOMELAND, OR FORGE YOUR OWN PATH IN FIRE EMBLEM: FATES, COMING TO NINTENDO 3DS ON MAY 21

DLC Map Packs 1 & 2 will provide new content throughout the year

29th April 2016 – The fate of two nations is in your hands when Fire Emblem Fates releases exclusively for Nintendo 3DS family systems on May 21 in Australia and New Zealand. The latest in the long-running series of strategic turn-based RPGs will see players choosing to side with the Hoshido family they were born to, the Nohr family they were raised by, or forge their own path in one of three unique campaigns in Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation respectively.

Fire Emblem Fates is the latest title in the franchise following 2013’s acclaimed Fire Emblem: Awakening, and will release on May 21 following the series’ best-ever launch in the United States earlier this year. Each entry in the Fire Emblem series spans across different nations and continents in the same world at various points in its history, and sees the player take control of an ever-growing army as they attempt to prevent war and restore peace to their realm.

For the first time in the Fire Emblem series, the player’s customisable avatar, Corrin, is the lead protagonist. Raised as royalty in the Nohr Kingdom, their life is forever changed when they discover that they were actually born to the Hoshido royal family, but were kidnapped as a child by the evil Nohrian King Garon. However, both nations are on the brink of war, and Corrin must now choose whether to help defend the kingdom they were born to, help reform the regime they grew up in, or reject both sides of the conflict in an attempt to broker peace between nations.

Each path that Corrin can choose – protecting Hoshido in Birthright, siding with Nohr in Conquest, or refusing to choose in Revelation – will change the story in significant ways, providing wholly different Fire Emblem experiences each suited to different play styles and player experience levels. Those who play Birthright will be able to take on the Challenge Maps, which allow players to earn experience and money whenever they choose, much like Fire Emblem: Awakening. As such, this path is ideal for newcomers, or those for whom Awakening was their first experience with the series. Conquest, however, contains a different cast of recruitable characters and does not have these Challenge Maps, resulting in more limited character growth and finances, and thus a tougher challenge more akin to older games in the Fire Emblem series, and is therefore most recommended for franchise veterans. The download-only Revelation path represents the ultimate challenge of the three paths, and will reveal the truth behind the war, and is thus recommended especially for those who have finished one or both of the other story paths. Revelation will also include the Challenge Maps and allows recruitment of all but two characters from the previous two campaigns, with one new character exclusive to the Revelation story.

Battles in the Fire Emblem series often see players take their small force of recruited soldiers against ever-increasing armies as they attempt to restore peace to their nation. Combat is turn-based, requiring careful planning as any false moves or failed attacks will see units become exposed and vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. Making strategy even more important is the fact that, should one of the player’s units be cut down in battle in Classic Mode, then they’ll either be killed off for good, or will become too injured to ever return to the battlefield to aid you.

The release of Fire Emblem: Awakening saw the introduction of Casual Mode, where fallen characters are revived after each battle. Fire Emblem Fates introduces Phoenix Mode, where any fallen allies will revive after each in-game turn, providing a new, easier difficulty level for newcomers and players who want to concentrate on the story. With Phoenix Mode, Casual Mode, and Classic Mode, players of all skill levels will be able to cut through the combat in a way that best suits their abilities.

Those familiar with the Fire Emblem series may also find themselves approaching combat in ways they haven’t before. By accessing Dragon Veins on the map, new pathways can be created and travelled across, while the terrain can be changed in order to aid progress or hinder the enemy, opening up unprecedented tactical possibilities. The weapons triangle – where axes beat lances, lances beat swords, and swords beat axes – has also been expanded to include magic, bows, and additional weapons, making careful planning and strategy even more important if you wish to keep your allies out of harm’s way.

After each battle, players can spend time in their base of operations, which allows them to interact with recruited characters, bolster their defences to keep out invaders, and build new structures, some of which are exclusive to the Hoshido or Nohr sides and allow the purchase of new weapons and items. Friends can face off against each other in turn-based combat in both online and local multiplayer; each side can take five of their favourite units into battle to see who the ultimate strategist is.

Meanwhile, tapping in* the Ike, Lucina, Marth or Robin amiibo will cause these heroes of past Fire Emblem games to appear in the player’s castle. After the third time these heroes have visited your castle, they can be challenged in combat. Should you prove to be the superior strategist, then they will join your force and can be used as an ally in future battles.

Both Birthright and Conquest are wholly different campaigns that contain unique challenges, and by accessing the Branch of Fate on the main menu, it’s possible to purchase the opposing path at a reduced cost, as well as Revelation when it launches on June 10, using Nintendo eShop funds. Strategists yet to decide which version they want to play through can find out more about these games in two Developer’s Commentary videos, A Tale of Two Families – Birthright and A Tale of Two Families – Conquest.

Those who want even more content have the option of purchasing Fire Emblem Fates Map Pack 1 via the Dragon’s Gate, accessible after the completion of Chapter 6, from May 21. The eleven downloadable maps that make up this pack will be released periodically from launch through to July, providing a series of extra challenges, opportunities to gain more experience and money, and even recruit a new character. Late July will also see the launch of Map Pack 2 in Australia and New Zealand, which will include another six downloadable maps, providing plenty of content to keep strategy fans busy throughout winter. An additional free piece of content will also be made available during the distribution of each Map Pack.

Fire Emblem Fates will also release as a Limited Edition, featuring a Game Card with all three story paths included, an artbook, a landscape dual-sided poster and an exclusive SteelBook® case. This Limited Edition also lets players get their hands on the Revelation story path before it releases on Nintendo eShop at the later date of June 10. The New Nintendo 3DS XL Fire Emblem Fates Edition** will also launch in Australia and New Zealand May 21, providing the perfect opportunity for budding strategists to join the ranks of Nintendo 3DS owners and experience the latest entries in the Fire Emblem series. Owners of New Nintendo 3DS systems will also be able to purchase new Cover Plates that feature the warring families of Nohr and Hoshido.

My Nintendo members will also be able to exchange 20 Gold Points for a 10% discount for Fire Emblem Fates ahead of its launch, with the discount applied for purchases from Nintendo eShop between May 21 and June 16. Those purchasing Fire Emblem Fates via Nintendo eShop in the first four weeks after launch will also receive a free download code for the Two Kingdoms theme.

Fight for your friends in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, fight for your family in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, or fight for the truth in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation: the choice is yours. Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest for Nintendo 3DS family systems launch in Australia and New Zealand on May 21, and Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation will arrive on Nintendo eShop on June 10.

BUILD YOUR BUSINESS ON MARS – SOREN JOHNSON’S OFFWORLD TRADING COMPANY RELEASES TODAY

BUILD YOUR BUSINESS ON MARS – SOREN JOHNSON’S OFFWORLD TRADING COMPANY RELEASES TODAY

Plymouth, MI. – April 28, 2016 – Today, Stardock and Mohawk Games released Offworld Trading Company, the economic strategy game from Civilization IV lead designer Soren Johnson.

Set in the future, humanity has begun to colonize on Mars to try and seek new fortunes. Players take on the role of an investor trying to take control of the Martian market and take over their competition.

Offworld Trading Company is a new direction for real-time strategy where money is both your deadliest weapon and your toughest defense. With a campaign, skirmishes and daily challenges, players can enjoy a game by themselves at their leisure. If they want to connect with their friends online, the multiplayer mode can host up to 8 people for a knock-down, drag out economic brawl or they can join in ranked ladder games to see who the world’s best businessman really is.

“This game has been an idea I’ve had for a long time,” said Soren Johnson, lead designer for Offworld Trading Company and president of Mohawk Games. “I knew I wanted to create a unique real time strategy game, and when I started looking at all the possibilities, Mars just made sense for our setting.”

The real-time, player-driven market is the foundation of the game, allowing players to buy and sell resources and materials – even the food and water that the colonists need to survive. Players will need to build up enough capital to gain access to the lucrative offworld markets so that they can buy out their rivals and claim the Martian economy for themselves. But, the battle isn’t limited to the board room. Players also have access to a black market that allows them to employ some more underhanded methods for victory, such as hiring pirate raiders, or hackers to disrupt production, or sending a covert electromagnetic pulse to an opponent’s base.

There are four major corporations in the game,” said Johnson, “and all of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. When you add this to other variables within the game – like a constantly fluctuating stock market – you’re looking at a new gameplay experience every time you play.”

Offworld Trading Company is now available on Steam or through Stardock. For more information about Offworld Trading Company, please visit www.offworldgame.com.
