THE NEW YEAR BRINGS A NEW WORLD TO SAVE WHEN DRAGON QUEST VIII: JOURNEY OF THE CURSED KING RELEASES FOR NINTENDO 3DS ON JANUARY 21st 2017

New content includes two new playable characters, new side-quests, and the ability to send mementos of your adventure via StreetPass

4th November, 2016 – With the New Year comes new quests and great adventures, and 2017 will be no different when DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King comes to Nintendo 3DS family systems on January 21st 2017. This handheld retelling of the classic RPG that introduced the DRAGON QUEST series to Australia and New Zealand will be back and bigger than ever, with two new playable characters, more side-quests, and the ability to battle monsters on the go when it lands in the New Year.

The story begins when a jester, Dhoulmagus, comes to Castle Trodain and steals the King’s sceptre. He then uses its power to turn his majesty into a troll, the Princess into a horse, and the castle inhabitants into plants. The only one left unscathed from this attack is a castle guard who escaped the curse and must now step up to save the kingdom he’s sworn to protect. Only by travelling the lands, recruiting allies, and following the trail of destruction that Dhoulmagus leaves in his wake will The Hero be able to retrieve the sceptre in order to restore Trodain back to its former glory.

As players dive into the rich story of DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, whether they’re visiting for the first time or coming back to relive the adventure all over again, they can enjoy full voice-acting in all plot-important cut-scenes, and new story content that will provide more back-story about The Hero and the villainous Dhoulmagus. Further additions include additional quests to complete and dungeons to explore, and even a new alternative ending.

Returning heroes may also find that elements of DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King have been streamlined for this handheld outing. Adventurers in a hurry no longer need to rush to a Church to save thanks to the new Quick-Save function, allowing them to save and exit the game at any time. And for warriors in a hurry, battling foes is also much faster with the introduction of the “Speed Up” feature, allowing heroes to cut their way through each encounter with much greater haste.

Those who wish to capture mementos of their quest to restore peace to the land will now find it’s easier than ever before, as at any time outside of battles and cut-scenes players can pause the action and take a photo of their adventure thus far. These photos can be customised in a variety of different ways, including allowing The Hero and his companions to perform special poses, adding stickers, filters, or putting a frame around the image to add a personal touch to their memory. Once the player meets Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect they’ll also be able to unlock Cameron’s Codex, where they’ll be rewarded for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters, and situations.

All of these images can be saved to the SD card and shared to other DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King owners via StreetPass. Once these photos have been shared other players can give them a thumbs-up, and the more of these the image earns, the higher the chance of receiving a new item.

The New Year brings a new world to save when DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King releases for Nintendo 3DS family systems on January 21st 2017.

Batman: The Telltale Series – New World Order

Developer: Telltale Games
Publisher: Telltale Games
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One (Reviewed), Xbox 360
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $4.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

One of the biggest dilemma that a hero is often faced with in a story is who to save with a limited time to do so. Even the most powerful heroes are regularly given the choice between saving someone at random or someone who they are close to, almost to the point that it has become a fairly regular device to use to threaten an otherwise infallible hero. With Batman: The Telltale Series we’ve seen that trigger pulled last episode so now that the third episode has been released in the form of “New World Order” where does the story go from here?

Story

Considering what has already been mentioned, it is worth noting that the following review will mention certain events that have taken place over the first two episodes in the series and those who have yet to complete these episodes should do so before continuing on or risk spoiling major events.

batman-the-telltale-series-new-world-order-screenshot-003With that out of the way Batman: The Telltale Series – New World Order picks up shortly after the events that took place during the debate. Not only has the Children of Arkham’s leader appeared as the one behind the Penguin but with the death of Mayor Hill and potential maiming of Harvey Dent, things were looking grim for Gotham City and especially for Bruce as he was only able to save either Harvey or Catwoman from harm. In fact, not only was he unable to save both of these people but the Wayne family name was once again slandered as video proof of his father’s wrongdoings was aired openly alongside the debate.

Without going into too much detail about certain aspects that are revealed this time around, episode three continues to keep Bruce on his heels as his family’s dark past continues to chip away at his public standing even while his close relationships are either growing closer together or falling apart entirely. Oswald Cobblepot moves to continue to take back what was taken from him by the Wayne’s while Harvey’s reaction to the events at the debate have him teetering on the edge of sanity.

While playing through the episode players are given a rather delightful way to control their handling of these relationships, with being able to either gracefully accept the fact that Cobblepot is moving in to public power or lashing out at him and causing a scene, continuing to support Harvey despite his shifting personality, and more, though it is quite apparent that what players actually choose throughout the episode only have a minimal impact in the way things actually unfold, especially in regards to Catwoman.

batman-the-telltale-series-new-world-order-screenshot-001While the professional and personal relationships of Bruce Wayne and the character himself continue to be well-written and developed in an incredibly interesting manner with there appearing to be various consequences that will affect more than one relationship with your decisions, many major decisions continue to play out in a predictable, and in one way rather disappointing manner. Those who have played through the previous episode will know that saving Harvey will leave him with only a few scuffs while those who chose to help Catwoman will see a Harvey that is far more familiar looking when it comes to his new personality shift.

The problem with this is that even with Harvey being only slightly scuffed up this transition to Two-Face continues unabated and only makes the character look extremely underwhelming compared to what players who let him get injured will see. Along those same lines players will find themselves playing as mostly Bruce Wayne this time around and barely stepping into the boots of Batman as he rarely takes action this episode outside of two short segments, though considering the one segment ends up focusing on the new villain, who is surprisingly revealed at the end of the episode and will shock quite a few players, players will still be fairly pleased with the way time is split between Bruce’s normal self and his time beneath the cowl.

Gameplay

As usual, players can expect some fairly standard mechanics in Batman: The Telltale Series – New World Order. This comes in the form of a small bit of exploration that allows the player to examine a few of Batman’s gadgets, one simplistic scene that involves looking at various pieces of evidence and linking them together, and of course taking part in a couple of well-choreographed quick time event fights.

batman-the-telltale-series-new-world-order-screenshot-002These fights are far less frequent this time around and the aforementioned puzzle segment with the evidence is incredibly easy to put together making for rather simple interactions this time around as players will spend most of their time watching and making dialogue choices.

Visuals & Audio

As mentioned earlier, players will be in for a fairly different presentation depending on whether they let Harvey get injured or not at the end of the last episode. Those who did will find that Harvey Dent’s new injured face is presented in gruesome but fitting fashion for the character, matching his expressions and dialogue perfectly, while those who didn’t will be treated to an underwhelming experience.

batman-the-telltale-series-new-world-order-screenshot-004That being said, the fight sequences are once again well-handled especially since the villain battle this time around features a number of new gadgets being used against Batman, creating an interesting series of events. The voice work for the series continues to be impressive in this episode as each of the voice actors handle their roles well, especially when it comes to Harvey Dent’s voice shifting between his two personalities.

Overall

Batman: The Telltale Series – New World Order continues to keep players guessing as to what will happen next as Bruce Wayne’s public life, crime-fighting life, and personal life continue to clash against one another as new threats and revelations continue to pour out of the woodwork. That being said, outside of a few major revelations this episode works primarily as a build-up for what is to come and considering the way things end, invested players will be quite eager for the fourth episode.

THE QUEST FOR THE DRAGON SLAYER SWORD COMMENCES—XSEED GAMES LAUNCHES XANADU NEXT ON WINDOWS PC

THE QUEST FOR THE DRAGON SLAYER SWORD COMMENCES—XSEED GAMES LAUNCHES XANADU NEXT ON WINDOWS PC

First Global Release of Nihon Falcom Action RPG Classic Comes to Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store by Humble Bundle

Torrance, Calif. — November 3, 2016 — XSEED Games, the independent-minded console publishing brand of Marvelous USA, Inc., today announced that the long-awaited Nihon Falcom RPG Xanadu Next has launched worldwide on Windows PC via Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store by Humble Bundle. Originally released in Japan in 2005, this is the first time global audiences will be able to experience the complete PC release of this distinguished entry in the long-running franchise. A brand new trailer has been released to celebrate today’s launch, highlighting the mystical backstory and showcasing the classic, action-packed combat that players will enjoy in Xanadu Next.

Xanadu Next is an exploration-centric action RPG from Nihon Falcom, the acclaimed creators of the Ys and The Legend of Heroes RPG franchises. A late entry in their immensely popular Dragon Slayer series and a spiritual follow-up to the late ‘80s cult classic Faxanadu, Xanadu Next puts the player in the shoes of a gravely injured knight given a new lease on life through ancient magic, who must now seek a legendary sword called “Dragon Slayer” to ensure his survival. Xanadu Next simulates the gritty, medieval look of its ancestor in full 3D, which is complemented by a unique, ominous soundtrack composed by Nihon Falcom’s esteemed Sound Team jdk.

Set on the medieval Europe-inspired Harlech Island, players will explore an interconnected world where icy peaks connect with fiery caverns, mystical forests and other exotic locales to create one enormous map. Countless new obstacles, techniques, items and deadly monsters are just some of the hidden secrets players can uncover in the world: stone tablets and letters are dispersed throughout the lands, each providing valuable insight into the important events and mythological intricacies that occurred 500 years prior, in the age of Xanadu.

Players battle vicious enemies in real-time with a wide variety of weapons, each of which is imbued with a unique skill that can be learned and leveled-up through repeated use – a system that would later be seen again in the Falcom classic Ys SEVEN. Mystical spirits known as “Guardians” can also be attached to the player character’s soul, granting a variety of passive effects to aid him in his quest. Add to this stat customization with the ability to level-down for point redistribution, unique items that are used to access new areas in creative ways, and more. The multitude of mysteries surrounding the ancient land of Xanadu promises a solid challenge to anyone who dares set foot on the forgotten shores of Harlech Island.

Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by XSEED Games, Xanadu Next is now available for Windows PC via Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store by Humble Bundle for $19.99, €19.99, and £16.99. The Windows PC version of Xanadu Next is not rated by the ESRB. More information on the game can be found on the recently launched website at www.xanadunext.com.

The Thing Review

The Thing

Studios: The Producer Circle Company, Peregrine Productions Hawk Films
Publisher: Universal Pictures
Platforms: Cinema
Release DateOut Now

Overview

I am, when it comes to cinema, an absolute coward. I specifically cannot stand horror films and am the first to run for the covers whenever the music starts to build even slightly. As a film geek, however, that simply will not do. Luckily for me, In the House was screening a Halloween double feature of The Thing and The Shining. John Carpenter’s The Thing has long been of interest to me as an intriguing combination of sci-fi and horror which would melt any geek’s heart (with a flamethrower). I worked up my nerve and headed on down to George St cinemas for their screening of the film.

As is In the House tradition; MCs Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn warmed up the audience before the screening. In a moment of absurdity, which can only be found at In the House screenings, one of the employees of Event cinemas frightened Jabba by hiding inside a prop coffin on the stage. Describing it here doesn’t quite do justice to it (as many moments are at In the House) but his reaction certainly amused both me and my companion before the screening. If you haven’t experienced at least one of these moments at one of these screenings, then you’re missing out. After Jabba calmed down from his brush with mortality, he and Quinny sat down for a chat about some of the trivia behind the film. An interesting tidbit from their discussion was the fact that the entire mystery of the film is revealed within the first ten minutes by one of the Norwegian researchers.

the-thing-screenshot-02

Story

The starts off on the frozen tundra of Antarctica with a dog being chased and shot at by men in a helicopter. As the dog reaches an American research base, the helicopter lands revealing two crazed Norwegians who try desperately hard to kill the dog but due to their own ineptitude and inability to speak English, they both die. This erratic behaviour prompts the Americans to investigate the Norwegian base and try to ascertain what happened. They come across of slaughter and the mystery deepens as they find the charred remains of a hideous monstrosity. They return to base to try and figure out what to make of all these strange goings on but as the events unfold, they become acutely aware of what it was that drove the Norwegians to their insanity as the alien thing reveals itself.

the-thing-screenshot-03

The story itself is actually quite simple and linear with the characters all attempting to survive this encounter with the alien being. They realise quickly that they are not alone and that the alien is capable of shapeshifting to appear human. The paranoia which builds subsequently is completely understandable as they quickly work out the danger that it would pose to humanity if it ever got back to civilization. Their attempts to identify who amongst them could be a doppelganger are ingenious and largely seem logical when drawing upon their limited experiences with the unknown being. Unlike a lot of horror films, there aren’t moments where characters do stupid things for the sake of getting killed or moving the plot forward.

I did not feel that we got much time to investigate the personalities of any of the characters but that is not something which I consider to be a point against. They largely all felt interchangeable for me although there were a couple of instances where we got a glimpse of a personality trait such as with the sassy cook. The film sets about fairly quickly in giving us a basic overview of each of these characters before thrusting into the main mystery of the story. There aren’t any subplots or divergent narrative points which take the audience’s attention away from the main narrative. It’s good to see that the film is confident enough in its premise alone to not worry about trying to pad itself out with superfluous subplots and it really helps to keep things moving at a fast pace.

Visuals

The practical effects, although dated, still hold up to this day and I was surprised by just how realistic they looked. There were a couple of scenes with the alien creature transitioning from the form of a dog into an amorphous and disturbing blob where the special effects seemed a bit plastic. This, I believe was mainly when the, otherwise awesome, glistening prosthetics of the alien being were placed directly next to fake matted fur. Other than that instance, the glistening and unnatural form of the alien being is equal parts disgusting and awesome. What made it so affecting is the fact that the film was restrained in how much it depicted the creature onscreen. This is body horror done right and is a prime example of why practical effects in film are still able to compete with the digital effects of today.

As well as having mostly awesome creature design, the movements of the thing stood out for my companion. She was particularly impressed by the Thing’s twitching as it assimilated one of the hapless researchers and couldn’t tell whether the effect was a result of animatronics, puppetry, or a guy in a suit. Overall, the visual effects worked their magic in creating a creature which is deeply unsettling to behold.

Audio

The film’s soundtrack was largely solid without any particular standouts. It largely served its purpose of reinforcing the film’s action and narrative beats but without any particularly noticeable tracks. An aspect of the audio design which particularly stuck out for me was the noises which the creature made when it was largely in human form. The combination of having what is ostensibly a human make such eerie sounds was deeply unsettling and evoked a sense of the uncanny for me.

Overall

Overall, I very much enjoyed this film and the way it approached horror. The story was straightforward and focused which ensured that every moment of screen time was dedicated to deepening the mystery or heightening the tension. The visual effects largely hold up with the practical effects especially still coming across as gross and disturbing as ever. The audio design for the alien was deeply disturbing and absolutely suited the uncanny nature of the moment we hear it scream. It’s films like these which make me realise that my aversion to the horror genre is unfounded and that not every such film has to be composed of jump scares or gore. As a scaredy cat, it was a tense experience but ultimately, quite fun. Kudos to In the House for screening this classic!
