Content Additions for Torment: Tides of Numenera Out Now

Highly Anticipated Updates and “Servant of the Tides” Trailer Available for Fans of Critically Acclaimed RPG

Wroclaw, Poland – May 22, 2017 – inXile Entertainment and Techland Publishing, has announced the release of new content additions that fans have been clamouring for since Torment: Tides of Numenera launched earlier this year. Chief among these features is the inclusion of an additional companion, Oom (“The Toy”).

The additional content is as follows:

  • Oom (“The Toy” companion) – Oom is a living artefact from a prior world, and extraordinarily loyal to you. A shape-changer and guardian, it is somehow connected to the Tides, and it grants the Last Castoff a deeper connection to them. It is also a mystery to be solved. Oom does not speak, and even its thoughts are a strange tangle of alien metaphors. It will drive you to increase your understanding of the Tides, and by doing so, you will learn secrets about its long-lost past.
  • Voluminous Codex – The Ninth World is immense, full of rich and exciting lore and characters. The Voluminous Codex will serve as an encyclopaedia of the player’s travels, updating with more entries as they proceed through the game, and allowing them to learn more about the places they visit and the beings they meet.

Developed by the creators of the all-time classic Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically revered cRPGs in gaming history, this science-fantasy RPG explores similar deep and personal topics of abandonment, evanescence, and the legacy we all leave behind. Torment: Tides of Numenera takes place on Earth one billion years in the future, in the rich and diverse Numenera setting created by pen and paper RPG luminary, Monte Cook. Players will experience a game of intricate choices and consequences with thousands of meaningful decisions that will make every playthrough unique.

REUNITE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS AND RESTORE PEACE TO A WARRING CONTINENT IN FIRE EMBLEM ECHOES: SHADOWS OF VALENTIA, OUT NOW FOR NINTENDO 3DS FAMILY SYSTEMS

REUNITE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS AND RESTORE PEACE TO A WARRING CONTINENT IN FIRE EMBLEM ECHOES: SHADOWS OF VALENTIA, OUT NOW FOR NINTENDO 3DS FAMILY SYSTEMS

The Season Pass expands the adventure, allowing players to earn more experience, witness the previously untold story of Valentia, and recruit new playable characters

22nd May, 2017 – When the continent of Valentia is in the mire of civil war and destruction, its only hopes are two long-lost childhood friends, who must gather allies, reunite, and bring peace back to the realm in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, releasing today on Nintendo 3DS family systems. This re-envisioning of the previously Japan-only Fire Emblem Gaiden brings the classic strategy RPG to Australia and New Zealand for the first time, remade, remastered, and with more content than before.

Following the release of the free-to-start Fire Emblem Heroes for smart devices, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia sees players take control of the two separate armies of Alm and Celica, as they each aim to bring peace to the continent of Valentia. The game also boasts expanded story content thanks to new heroes to recruit, new villains to oppose, and a new playable prologue that explores the previously unknown history between Alm and Celica. All character dialogue for the main story is now fully voiced in English, while animated cutscenes from movie animators Studio Khara bring the story to new life.

Battles in the Fire Emblem series see players take their small force of recruited soldiers and oppose increasingly powerful enemies in turn-based combat that requires careful tactical planning, as unsuccessful or missed attacks make units vulnerable to attack. Should a unit be cut down in the midst of battle in Fire Emblem’s traditional Classic Mode, they’ll either become too injured to ever return to the battlefield, or will be fatally wounded. Anyone who yearns for defeat to be temporary can play through in Casual Mode, which allows fallen allies to be revived after each battle, allowing for more comfortable story progression. In a new addition to the series, Mila’s Turnwheel will allow would-be strategists to go further by rewinding their last few turns, giving them a chance to reconsider their next strategic move and reverse any major tactical errors.

Another first for the series comes with Alm and Celica’s ability to freely explore dungeons and caves in three dimensions, allowing them to see enemies before battle and escape potentially dangerous conflicts, or make a pre-emptive strike to reduce their foe’s health for the ensuing conflict. Each dungeon also contains a Mila’s Statue, allowing characters to be promoted or their class changed, while some contain Sacred Springs that can grant heroes with permanent stat increases.

Players may also use the Alm and Celica amiibo* figures available now to unlock an exclusive dungeon each, allowing heroes to earn items and level up their armies further by defeating bosses. During combat, players can also sacrifice some of Alm or Celica’s health to summon a temporary computer-controlled ally known as an Illusory Hero using either their respective amiibo, or Fire Emblem characters from the Super Smash Bros. Collection amiibo, including Marth, Lucina, Ike, Roy, and the upcoming Corrin amiibo. See all compatible amiibo on the website.

Joining an already strong line-up of Nintendo 3DS titles this year, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia has been met with acclaim from critics:

  • Definitely pick it up if you’re a Fire Emblem fan, either new or old! Vooks
  • For those new to the franchise, Shadows of Valentia is a strong starting point, and a brilliant update to the original Gaiden title. The Iris

In the coming weeks, players will also be able to expand their adventure further with five major downloadable content packs. The Rise of the Deliverance Pack allows players to explore the previously-untold history of Valentia, complete with brand new prologue story content, new voice-acting, and the ability to take command of a character players can’t control in the main game, while the Lost Altars Pack includes ten unique, mysterious Altars that allow heroes to be upgraded to new, exclusive classes. Additionally, the Cipher Companions Pack allows players to recruit four new heroes from Fire Emblem Cipher, the popular Japanese trading card game, while the other packs offer opportunities to strengthen their characters and earn in-game money and items. More information can be found on the Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia website.

Reunite childhood friends and restore peace to a warring continent in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, out now for Nintendo 3DS family systems. A Limited Edition containing the game with reversible titlesheet, an artbook, metal pixel pin badges of Alm, Celica, and Marth and the Sound Selection CD is also available. The Alm and Celica amiibo are out now.

The first match on Saturday will see the biggest rivals, New South Wales and Queensland, go head-to-head.

With pride on the line, Shoutcasters and Region Selectors, Cameron ‘Crunch’ Russell (NZ),  Zack ‘Rusty’ Pye (QLD), Matthew ‘Fish’ Stewart (NSW), Jake ‘Spawn’ Tiberi (VIC), have confirmed their final line ups and they’re all ‘quietly’ confident their team can win it all.

“There’s always something to prove in the Australian/New Zealand rivalry, so when it comes to League of Origin you’re certainly going to see the strength of Kiwi patriotism in backing our team,” said Crunch.

“I’d call us the underdogs in this story,” says Rusty. “We had a limited player pool to choose from, names that may not compare in magnitude to some of our opponents. But we’re still Queensland.”

“The past decade has seen a lot of Maroon victories.” says Fish. “This time the Blues will be leading the pack, and we will take NZ and VIC as collateral damage along the way!”

“Mid lane is so stacked in Victoria,” Spawn acknowledges. “It’s kind of insane that the three I rate the highest in the OPL are all from my home state!”

Empathy: Path of Whispers Review

Empathy: Path of Whispers

Developer: Pixel Night
Publisher: Iceberg Interactive
Platforms: PC (reviewed)
Release Date: 16 May 2017
Price: – $19.99USD – Available Here

Overview

Walking Simulators are games that you have to approach with a specific state of mind. They’re made to be meditative,  thought-provoking games that you play at your own pace. No pressure to get anywhere fast and no one is chasing you. For this to work, a typical walking sim is supposed to have a strong foundation on a compelling story, great atmosphere and eye-candy visuals as a cherry on top. So does Empathy: Path of Whispers passes all the checkmarks with flying colors? Well, there’s only one way to find out (spoiler: by reading the rest of this review).

Story

The game opens up with a slideshow of paintings (well-drawn paintings, even) and a narrator giving us the first taste of the story. According to him, “something happened” and “violence soon took to the streets” (wow, talk about being vague). The world is in shambles but there is still hope for it to be saved. The narrator doesn’t tell us exactly how yet, only that we need to find a certain room with him but hey, I’ll take what I can get. Not that all of that tells us much, we only went from knowing nothing to almost nothing. Next, we’re thrown into a room (not the same one as the narrator mentioned, otherwise this would be a really short game) with a big control panel and one nifty tool that will be our companion for the rest of the game.  Besides having our right hand constantly occupied from now, E-15P energy scanner introduces us with the main mechanic of the game. As much as the world is torn apart there are still remnants left by the former citizens. These are called mementos and they can be almost anything, ranging from various tools to common household objects. You can usually recognize them by seeing a bit of static on them and having a bluish glow. Pointing out the E-15P in their direction and scanning them properly aligns them back into our world. We’re also rewarded with a short audio recording giving us a tiny glimpse into the story.

Gameplay

The game is divided into acts aka levels and every act follows a standard formula. There’s usually one main point of interest in a level, a door to unlock or a machine to start up and we do that by discovering all mementos in the area. To avoid a lot of empty walks, our scanner also has a built in radar so we can easily pinpoint those mementos. Unfortunately, that also means that most of the time you can just sprint around, zig-zagging all over the place till you scan enough mementos and the game tells you “that’s it, go here now connect the pieces and finish the level”. On the other hand, the visual angle of the game is good enough to distract us from accidental speedrunning so let’s talk more about that in the next segment.

Visuals

The game has four presets that impact the quality of visuals: low, medium, high and ultra. In reality, there are only two:  absolutely stunning and “is my graphics card dead now?” Seriously though, anything below high is not worth mentioning (or playing). The downgrade in quality after the high setting is horrendous but considering that the requirements for the game are not taxing at all, it’s hardly an issue. So unless you’re playing on a 10-year old rig there’s nothing to worry about.  The game is well aware of what it can offer on the visual front. The first act of the game introduces us to a  sector of Atlas Park consisting of a beautiful forest and cozy lake at midnight. I actually spent most of my time there despite the area having only 2-3 required mementos to find. Every corner and a turn I took was a perfect screenshot material. This aspect of the game would be even more impressive if it weren’t for some underwhelming level choices later. The next act threw me into one of the blandest and uninspiring areas of the game. As much as it was important and integral to the story, I raced to finish it as fast as I could. Although I was handsomely rewarded by arriving in Eagleview next (one of the most beautiful locations in the game), it’s not really a good sign when a game has “that one level we all despise”.

Audio

The soundtrack in Empathy: Path of Whispers is on par with visuals, except it doesn’t have “that one tune we all despise”. Most of the time we are accompanied with soothing piano renditions but sometimes it will take a turn to eerie notes. It works great paired with certain ominous locations in the game. The only thing that bugged me is why the narrator had to be so chatty at the start of the game. I know that the world is all screwed and in danger, but let me just enjoy some nice music while I can. Still, don’t take this as a jab at the voice acting in any way. He might have been a bit clingy at the start but the audio recordings you scavenge around show some remarkable voice acting throughout the game. Considering that the only thing I wanted was that music wouldn’t be too annoying, I’d say I got more than I bargained for.

Overall

Empathy: Path of Whispers is a game that took a look at other walking sims and decided not to repeat some common mistakes. Along with that path, it also made a few of its own. The story is rather interesting near the end when everything finally pieces together, but before that happens it hardly serves as a driving force behind all the exploring. What pushes this game above mediocrity is great visuals, good soundtrack but not storytelling. It’s all great once you get the full picture but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, If walking simulators are your thing, I’m certain you’re welcome this game with open arms. I know I enjoyed it, it only irks me how a few missteps are what prevents this good game from being great.
