Neo-Victorian RPG from Coin Operated Games Reveals Author/Cartoonist Paul Noth as Story Writer

Auburn, New Hampshire – August 16, 2017 – Coin Operated Games announces today that its upcoming Neo-Victorian RPG Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates, will be coming to PC via Steam starting on October 4, 2017.  Developed by a team of industry veterans from such influential companies as Crytek, Creative Assembly, Codemasters and Digital Reality, Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates is a top-down isometric RPG that takes place in an alternate industrial New York circa 1911.

… water is everywhere but none of it to drink…

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates depicts a troubled New York in which the entire city is flooded by rising oceans and the citizens now face a new threat: the fresh water pipes have stopped and there is no water to drink!

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates features an original story penned by renowned writer/comic artist Paul Noth, a staff cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine, where his work has appeared regularly since 2004. He created the Emmy-nominated animated series “Pale Force” for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and was animation consultant for Saturday Night Live. He’s also developed shows for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Nickelodeon, and his trilogy of middle-grade novels will be published by Bloomsbury, starting in April of 2018 with “How to Sell Your Family to the Aliens.”

“After writing for different media throughout my career, I’m very excited to be working with Coin Operated Games to write their video game script,” said Paul Noth. “The world that has been created in Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates is amazing and truly unique, so I’m thrilled to be able to develop a story set in this new world.”

Although set in a fictional, alternate history, the game pays homage to historic accounts by adding authentic items such as patent medicines including poisons or tonics made from dangerous ingredients. Many of the games’ objectives and side quests will tie directly into the experiences that someone in the 19th century would have. The game’s authenticity reflects scenes from New York circa 1900, while tying the storyline to current day themes such as global warming and the rising of the oceans.

“We are very honored that Paul is working with us on the storyline for Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates,” said John Randall, Creative Director of Empyre. “He is a world class writer, and has been invaluable to us with helping to shape the direction of our games’ signature Neo-Victorian story and experience.”

Currently in development by Coin Operated Games, Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates will be available via Steam on October 4, 2017. More information will be shared in the coming weeks once the waters die down…

We Happy Few Reaching Grander Vision, Coming to Retail on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation®4 April 13, 2018

Full-length story campaign, three playable characters, and more than 250 unique encounters expand upon the game’s initial debut

Frisco, Texas – August 16, 2017/ Gearbox Publishing has partnered with Compulsion Games to take We Happy Few, the eerie adventure about survival and paranoia, to new heights. On April 13, 2018, We Happy Few will launch worldwide with more content than ever―including a full-length story campaign played as three different characters and more than 250 unique encounters―realizing a much grander vision for the game. We Happy Few will be available both digitally and at retail for Xbox One, Windows 10 Store, PC, and PlayStation®4. Compulsion Games continues to retain all creative control over We Happy Few as it evolves from a crowdfunding digital success to a worldwide multi-platform retail launch.

Early Access and Game Preview Program owners of We Happy Few have been able to explore a portion of the procedurally generated world, collect and craft items, and interact with the Joy-obsessed society of Wellington Wells through stealth, combat, and conformity. When the game launches in full with the help of Gearbox Publishing, players will experience how these improved mechanics come together and give rise to three protagonists, each with their own reason for giving up artificial happiness.

Each of these three playable characters has their own particular strengths―and their own dark secrets. As they attempt to survive encounters with their drug-addled former neighbors, old friends, ex-lovers, and even each other, they may dig up some long-buried secrets of Wellington Wells itself.

Our team was humbled by the initial public reception to We Happy Few, and delighted to have this chance to make it bigger. We’re longtime fans of Borderlands, and we’re excited to be part of a line-up that also includes games like Homeworld and Fortnite. Gearbox believed in us from the very beginning, and we think this partnership will make it possible to create the game that our community expects,” said Guillaume Provost, Studio Head of Compulsion Games

Compulsion Games has an amazing game vision and it’s an honor for Gearbox Publishing to contribute to the effort,” said Steve Gibson, Head of Gearbox Publishing.

Pre-order your digital or physical copy of We Happy Few for $59.99, with a 15% discount at participating retailers, and receive the in-game Jolly Brolly parasol weapon. Microsoft Store, Steam, GOG.com, and Humble Store customers will also gain access to the alpha version of the game at the time of pre-order. Windows 10 Store customers will also gain access to the alpha version when it is available for pre-order this fall. PlayStation®Store customers will receive an exclusive theme. Early Access and Game Preview Program owners of We Happy Few will receive the full game on April 13, 2018 at no extra cost.

The limited We Happy Few Collector’s Set, priced at $149.99, contains 60s-themed goodies like a replica Bobby mask, “You Look Smashing” Lamp, the We Happy Few soundtrack on vinyl, a Joy alarm clock, and more. It does not include a copy of the game so that Early Access players can purchase it separately.

Life in Technicolour Update

Today marks the release of the major Life in Technicolour update on Steam and Xbox One. Life in Technicolour brings new Joy effects, improved user interface, reworked AI, and more. This is the final major update We Happy Few will receive while in Early Access as Compulsion Games sets its sights on the full release.

About We Happy Few

We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules. Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially enthused society.

MARVEL Future Fight Adds Three Characters in New Update

MARVEL Future Fight Adds Three Characters in New Update

Additional content includes four new uniforms, new battle modes, increased difficulty in challenges, and more

Seoul, Korea (August 9, 2017)  – Netmarble Games Corp., the fastest-growing mobile game company in Asia, today released a new update for its hit mobile title MARVEL Future Fight that includes three new characters: SPIDER-MAN 2099, ABSORBING MAN and TITANIA. In addition, four new uniforms have debuted: Yondu now has a uniform based on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kid Kaiju has a MONSTERS UNLEASHED! (MFF VARIANT) comic cover uniform, Spider-Gwen has received a GWENDOLYNE STACY uniform, and Thanos has a uniform from the SECRET WARS: INFINITY comics.

MARVEL Future Fight has additionally made various improvements to the end-game “Shadowland” content, such as adding five additional stages after the 25th floor, increasing the overall difficulty level, and adding a new battle mode with a manual combat system. In this new battle mode, players will form two teams with up to six characters and play a first half, a second half, and overtime. The first team to conquer two rounds wins the game.

Players will also receive customized challenge options every day that vary in difficulty depending on their combat power. The stronger power that their characters boast, the more difficult their challenges will be. This gives every player the fun of carrying out demanding missions, no matter how strong they are.

“We’re always making it a point to make the player experience as enjoyable as possible,” said Seungwon Lee, Chief Global officer at Netmarble Games. “With this update, we not only introduced new characters, uniforms, and battle modes, but we also made various improvements to make the gameplay more engaging and accessible.”

Players will encounter the Mad Titan, Thanos, one of the game’s most challenging villains, in World Boss Ultimate mode.

Additionally, MARVEL Future Fight has increased convenience by combining the two guide quests for new players—called Journey of Growth and Hero’s Journey—into one quest. In addition, players now can directly collect rewards from the alarm that notifies them of the successful completion of guide quests.

The full list of characters joining MARVEL Future Fight includes:

  • SPIDER-MAN 2099 – A Spider-Man from the year 2099. He has the same physical abilities as Spider-Man, but wears a suit equipped with all kinds of futuristic gear.
  • ABSORBING MAN – A frequent Marvel villain with a long history. His weapon is a ball and chain, and he is able to absorb the properties of any object that he touches to alter his own body.
  • TITANIA – Married to ABSORBING MAN, she has powerful physical strength and is adept at hand-to-hand combat.

Beverly Hills Cop Review

Beverly Hills Cop

Studios: Don Simpson Production, Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, The Murphy Company
Publisher: Paramount Pictures
Platforms: Cinema
Release Date: Out Now

Overview

Winter has started losing its icy grip on us here at the underside of the world, which means that the second season of In the House has kicked off. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it down to the new season of In the House for their screening of The Matrix but I was glad to make out for this one. I honestly had not seen Beverly Hills Cop before I came out to watch it for this screening and I had no idea what to expect.

The hosts for the evening were Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and David ‘Quinny’ Quinn who, in true In the House fashion, decided to warm the audience up with a quick game. This time, some members of the audience were invited up to fire a nerf pistol at a makeshift target and win both the pistol they were playing the game with and jetboating tickets. Afterwards the two settled down and began sharing some trivia about the film we were about to watch. Of particular interest to me was the fact that Beverly Hills Cop had such an enduring popularity at its release that it held the title of highest grossing R-rated (American rating) film until the release of The Matrix: Reloaded in the new millennium.

Story

When an old friend is mysteriously killed, Fast-talking and street-smart West coast cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is suddenly drawn into investigating a crime in uptown Los Angeles. When he first arrives in LA, he finds the former employer of his friend who reacts badly to his inquiries and has him thrown through a window. Now, with the hapless police of Beverly Hills following him to make sure he doesn’t cause any more trouble, he has to somehow crack the case and bring the bad guys to justice.

The script, is without a doubt, extremely well crafted. It’s sharp, it’s smart, it has interesting things to say and, most importantly for a comedy, it’s actually pretty dang witty. All of the characters are actually fairly well developed during the film’s run time and we see even the ancillary bit characters experience some manner of character development. Every plot point and joke was set up and delivered seamlessly. I’m impressed by the absence of any superfluous lines and it shows with how easily everything in this film flows. Maybe I’ve just been let down by too many films of late with how overtly they have to telegraph various points that the audience needs to see but this film made it seem like child’s play.

It cannot be overstated just how important good delivery and comic timing by an actor is in this kind of film. It’s lucky then that pretty much the entire cast brings their A-game to bear; whether it’s Murphy as the charming and affable Axel or Judge Reinhold as the dim-witted Detective Billy Rosewood. Although Murphy certainly carries the lion’s share of the witty one-liners and the jokes, this really is an ensemble performance since the actors around Murphy needed to give enough for him to play off of. Everyone played their part as either the joker or the straight man to create characters and interactions which were surprisingly complex and nuanced.

There is one aspect which may be somewhat controversial in today’s political and social context. Namely, the film has its police characters attempt to lie to cover up their less than adequate adherence to the rules of proper police procedure. The film, of course, gives its characters some very extensive justification and we can clearly see that they’re using deceit in the pursuit of justice but I should advise that seeing police lying to avoid being held accountable can leave some punters with a bad taste in the mouth. One underlying plot point I do have to give this film credit for is the quite clear queer coding of James Russo’s character, Mikey Tandino. I think that, especially given the film’s release in 1984, the film should earn praise for its subtle and human portrayal of a gay character. I just wish that he wasn’t almost immediately fridged to motivate Axel to head West.

Visuals & Audio

Of particular note in this film were the action sequences which featured stunts. Even three decades on from when the film was released, these stunts are still awesome to witness. These stunts come from the time before computer generated special effects, with the opening sequence especially, would have been difficult to coordinate and pull off but when seeing the final product it’s easy to see that they were absolutely worth it. There is no doubt that even decades on, these actions sequences have stood the test of time and the only film which I think could best some of the shots featured in this film in terms of practical car stunts would be Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s definitely not something I was expecting to find in a comedy action film but it’s definitely a great addition.

The film’s musical score is resoundingly 80s with plenty of synth and bounce. I could not, for the life of me, tell you which songs were playing (except for the film’s main theme) but I remember enjoying it when I was listening to it. It serves to match the film’s generally upbeat tempo to great effect but I’m uncertain as whether it would leave you with much an impression after the film has wrapped up.

Overall

Ultimately, I very much enjoyed this film and would heartily recommend it to anyone who is interested. The story and characters are sharp and well-crafted with plenty of moments that are guaranteed to make most punters laugh. The stunts in the film were way ahead of their time and will hold their own even in comparison to today’s action fare. The film’s soundtrack features a cool theme which will stick with you but is otherwise simply enjoyable 80s pop which will certainly scratch the itch for any with a nostalgia for the decade. There’s honestly a lot to like in this film and it’s easy to see why it has had such an enduring popularity (and why it’s one of Quinny’s favourites).

Kudos to In the House for screening such a fun classic!

For other films which In The House is screening, feel free to check out their schedule for the next season here.

About Beast Quest

Beast Quest is the popular fiction book series by Adam Blade, first published in July 2007 by Orchard Books. The hit children’s book series has sold 17 million copies globally, with 8 million copies in the UK alone, and has been translated into 30+ languages, with 120 titles published to date. In 2016, Working Partners, the UK’s leading creator of series fiction for children, and a Coolabi Group company, announced a new deal with Orchard Books to publish hit book series Beast Quest until 2026. Each series focuses on the themes of friendship, fantasy and adventure, encouraging children to read by infusing the subject matter with elements they enjoy. Beast Quest is favored by parents and teachers as the structure encourages children to read a whole series (4 or 6 titles), rather than just one book. The Beast Quest gaming app, co-produced by Coolabi and Miniclip for iOS, Android and Windows Phone, has already achieved over 9 million global downloads and continues to attract several hundred thousand new downloads every month. About Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

Inspired by real-world counter-terrorist organizations, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege puts players in the middle of lethal close-quarter confrontations. For the first time in a Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six game, players will engage in sieges, a new style of assault where enemies have the means to transform their environments into modern strongholds while Rainbow Six teams lead the assault to breach the enemy’s position. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege gives players unprecedented control over their ability to fortify their position by reinforcing walls and floors, using barbed wire and deployable shields, laying mines and more, or to breach the enemies’ position using observation drones, setting charges, rappelling and more. The fast pace and uniqueness of each siege sets a new bar for intense firefights, strategic gameplay and competitive gaming.

JUST SURVIVE™ LAUNCHES GAME-CHANGING UPDATE WITH NEW MAP AND STRONGHOLDS

JUST SURVIVE™ LAUNCHES GAME-CHANGING UPDATE WITH NEW MAP AND STRONGHOLDS

SAN DIEGOAug. 15, 2017 – Daybreak Games has released its largest update to date for the open world zombie survival game Just Survive™. Alongside new content, which includes a brand-new map and new Stronghold system, a new narrative has been established, separating Just Survive from the H1Z1® universe. Just Survive’s rebranding and content update represents the development team’s evolved vision for the game and lays the foundation for future updates in the months to come.

“Our new logo and key art highlight all the aspects of the game that players know and love—from base building and defending, to looting and exploring, and also reflects how Just Survive is developing into a more mature and polished game,” said Ben Jones, Just Survive Creative Director. “Just Survive is about more than just killing zombies, it’s about the player’s survival journey. Re-establishing society isn’t an easy task, and this update introduces a variety of features, like Strongholds, that encourage players to band together through the dangers and tension of post-apocalyptic life while striving to reclaim their world from the zombie hordes.”

As the most comprehensive update in the game’s history, the development team has made changes to many aspects of the game, introducing a new map, adding the Stronghold base-building system, weapon revamp, and in-game curency system:

  • Badwater Canyon: A completely new world map designed with multiple styles of gameplay in mind and featuring targeted loot distribution, strategic verticality, exploration opportunities, and hundreds of easily identifiable base pads for Stronghold construction. Badwater Canyon will be rolled out steadily over time, region by region, as it is created in order to give appropriate focus to each aspect of its overall design. It has replaced the game’s original map.
  • Stronghold: A new system where players can build robust structures and fortify them with an array of defenses and traps to fend off coordinated attacks. Challenging players with opportunities to attack and defend, Strongholds encourage creative problem solving. In addition, these bases can be customized by players to make their in-game homes unique.
  • Weapon Revamp: All weapons have been rebuilt from scratch, introducing tiers to each weapon type while fine-tuning them to look and feel unique. In addition, we’ve improved melee combat with a new hit registration system and attack animation overhaul.
  • Golden Eagle Coins: Items found in the world can be exchanged for a new in-game currency tied to individual characters. These aim to create true value for each item in the world, tackling the problem of item hoarding. Golden Eagle Coins are required to purchase new Stronghold locations, and this currency’s usage will continue to be expanded in the future.

Other changes in this update include refined harvesting mechanics, a rebalancing of systems, itemization overhaul, and modification to spawning and death. A complete list of changes and fixes in today’s update is available at: http://www.justsurvive.com/news/game-update-patch-notes-8-15

Just Survive is currently available in Steam Early Access for Windows PC. For more information, visit www.justsurvive.com, and follow the game on Facebook, Twitter and Twitch.
