Overview

Time for another round of risking your friendship or relationship with Overcooked 2! With the announcement of the sequel I got definitely reminded of my first playthrough of Overcooked together with my girlfriend. It was an emotional rollercoaster and even if we were fighting and swearing at each other most of the time , there were magical moments  inbetween and in the end we found our peace. So I couldn’t  wait to dive into this kitchen chaos again and check out the new features as expectations were really high.

Story

We find ourselves back in the Onion Kingdom and this time the Onion King made a horrible mistake. While reading from the Necronomnomicon he summoned a dangerous army of undead bread and they name themselves The Unbread! So once again he has to gather the best cooks together to save the kingdom and this is where you and your friends or partners come in.  While heading from kitchen to kitchen you’ll always report to Onion King and he’s always good for some funny lines. This might also lighten up the mood in front of your TV from time to time!

Gameplay

The developers from Ghost Town Games decided to add some new features in the sequel to Overcooked while the idea remains the same. You meet up in a kitchen and prepare a variety of recipes for a bunch of customers. The game is for 1-4 players and Overcooked 2 also offers an online mode for the first time. This is a great addition, although I have to admit that most fun definitely comes up playing this together with your buddies on the couch. Before we talk about the new features I’d also like to mention that there’s some delicious new food on the menu. You’ll have to cook sushi, pasta, burgers and burgers for the hungry clients. One of the new mechanics introduces the throwing of ingredients and allows you to place ingredients into the arms of your partners or even directly into the pan. In some levels this is necessary because the developers created a series of unconventional kitchens. You’ll find yourself cooking on rafts on a river or even in a hot air balloon. As this didn’t seem crazy enough, the kitchens will change around you in the new dynamic levels.

Overcooked 2 shows no mercy and is really a difficult game to get into as a beginner. You’ll fail, your kitchen will catch fire and you even might get a bit frustrated. The good thing though is, that the more you play the more satisfying is the game experience. If you suddenly prepare 10 dishes compared to just 2 during your first try, you’ll definitely want to continue playing. When you finished a level you can use the air bus to move around on the world map, which is  a bit more interactive now. You have to drive around and activate hidden buttons to get access to new areas. I found this a bit annoying at some point, because it felt like a waste of time to start the next level where all the fun is happening.

With the addition of new food and additional cooks there’s definitely some new content but as far as the mechanics go, the only great thing about Overcooked 2 is the throwing mechanic. It just makes so much sense compared to those mentioned buttons on the world map. This is also the reason why I found myself a bit disappointed later on. The team added some minor features, but at the same time it looked like they weren’t ready  to take any risks. I doubt that they had more ideas as they basically came up with this whole thing in the first place. Yes it’s great that my cook can be a platypus or beaver, but is it important? Do players really buy those additional cosmetic costumes?

Overcooked 2 shows improvements at the right places and is better than the first game. This is not always the case so personally I’m very happy about this sequel. I still think there’s more potential in the franchise and it can grow into a bigger game with more content. Let’s expand the story, travel the world, meet new cultures and get to know regional food. Anyway, I had once again a lot of fun playing and can definitely recommend Overcooked 2 to everyone that is looking for a great coop-game.

Visuals & Audio

Expect a colorful mix from the visual side and also a lot of explosions this time. The effects create even more chaos on the screen than you already have to deal with in the kitchen. The music and sounds are fun and match the gameplay well. The mighty Onion King sticks to his fantasy language and it just never gets old.

Overall

If you liked Overcooked, you have to get Overcooked 2. It’s a better game and the throwing mechanic is already worth checking it out. Ghost Town Games delivered a sequel that can be described as “never change a winning system”.

F1® 2018 – More Than Just A Game

F1® 2018 – More Than Just A Game

Latest Developer Diary Focuses On The Most Authentic F1 Car Simulation yet

SYDNEY, 10th August 2018 – Codemasters® has today released the third part in a series of developer diaries for F1® 2018, the official videogame of the 2018 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP™, detailing how the new game boasts the most authentic F1® car handling simulation ever seen in the franchise.

The third of the four part series, which is available to watch now at www.youtube.com/formula1game, reveals that F1® 2018’s car simulation and handling has significantly advanced this year, with revamped suspension and chassis physics, the addition of real world F1® data for unprecedented accuracy, new “tyre carcass” temperature for the first time, as well as manual deployment of the ERS system. The ultimate result of these enhancements is that the gamer can experience the pure sensation of the tyres tearing into the track surface, and therefore giving a realistic and relatable feeling of grip, under all wear, compounds and weather conditions.

“I believe F1® 2018 is a massive step up, because we’ve introduced so many more simulation aspects that I believe will be very well received by all the players,” commented David Greco, Senior Car Handling Designer on F1® 2018. “To choose which one is the most important and advanced is quite hard, but I would probably say it is the expanded system which enables us to simulate the tyre temperature more realistically than we have ever done before.”

He continued: “This year, the way the car feels, with the ‘Force Feedback’, and how it all works together, we are very close to what I want from a simulator. In over 20 years of my career between sim racing and real motorsport, I have always come across questions like: ‘one title is more simulator than another title, because it’s very difficult to drive?’ With my real motorsport experience, I can say that real racing cars are made to have a lot of grip. To me, a simulator is not how easy it is to drive or how easy to make it spin. To me, a simulation is how many real-life, physical components we simulate, and especially this year, there are not many features that I can think of that we don’t simulate. To just call it a game to me is not enough anymore.”

F1® 2018 features all the official teams, the drivers and all 21 circuits of the thrilling 2018 season, including Circuit Paul Ricard and the Hockenheimring. As well as the current season’s offerings the game includes 20 iconic cars from the history of the sport. F1® 2018 will release onto PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X and Windows PC (via Steam) worldwide on Friday 24th August 2018.

Battle Girl High School Complete Collection Review

Battle Girl High School Complete Collection

Studio: Silver Link
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.98 – Available Here

Overview

Making an anime adaptation for a mobile game was once something that was a risky endeavor. Now this practice has become something of a commonplace situation where nearly every season has at least one series meant to promote the mobile game. Battle Girl High School happened to be one of these series but unlike other adaptations, this one tried something a bit different but does that help it stand out?

Story

The year is 2045 and humanity has been pushed to the brink of destruction by the unknown forces called the Irousu. What makes these enemies so threatening is the fact that they are almost impossible to defeat except for girls known as the Hoshimori who are capable of wielding weapons and powers that can slay the beasts. The girls, also called Star Guardians, are still young and while they are trained to fight, they still attend school like everyone else.

Generally when an anime adaptation is made for a mobile app, the series begins with telling the story from the beginning as an attempt to try and bring fans into the game as easily as possible while also showing current players animated events that they’ve already experienced. As mentioned before, Battle Girl High School does something different and that happens to be telling a completely different story that takes place far into the game’s actual events.

In a way, this does help make the story interesting for viewers who are already familiar with the game but if you either haven’t played the title before or, like many in the West who have never heard of the game, this ends up being a rather large downside to the way the anime handles the storyline. In fact, the story skips over a number of large plot points in an attempt to bring the entire class of characters, of which there are over fifteen different girls to try and introduce, together. There are snippets of backstory scattered throughout the season to try and tell how some characters, such as Sadone and the idols f*f ended up joining the force but most of this content is sacrificed for various slice-of-life elements.

The core of the storyline focuses on a brand new character introduced in the anime, and later added to the game through an event, Misaki and her mysterious origins. Unfortunately this story only happens to hold together during the first couple of episodes before bringing about a twist at the end of the series to try and wrap everything up following numerous episodes simply following these girls doing various cute things and interacting together all while no actual character development takes place. It is interesting to note that the player character, who takes on the role of the girls’ teacher, is still represented in the anime but is mostly relegated to being a side character.

Visuals

One of the main features of Battle Girl High School‘s original mobile app was the tendency for the gacha to release different versions of the female cast wearing various outfits and it is nice to see that the animators at least made sure to showcase some of that element. While the girls are tend to usually wear the same combat uniforms while fighting against the Irousu they are also shown wearing many of the costumes only seen through the gacha system and this helps keep viewers interested by changing up the feel of the series through the lengthy filler episodes.

The combat animation as well as the designs of the Irousu are handled well enough but it is worth noting that certain elements do look rather rough at times and battles tend to have more than a few obvious drops in animation quality.

Audio

It is worth noting that Sentai Filmworks has released this series with only the original Japanese voice track but that being said, this title features a rather impressive list of Japanese voice actresses. Despite the large amount of characters this series tries to work with the voice actors do a great job making sure that all of them sound unique in some form.

Although Battle Girl High School has a number of background tracks from the mobile game to draw from it is unfortunate that most, if not all, of the background music throughout the series is rather forgettable outside of a few battle scenes that are accentuated rather well by certain tracks. That being said there are a number of insert songs featuring vocals from the in-game idol group f*f who also handle the ending theme for the series and these songs are pleasant to listen to. As for the aforementioned ending theme, it is called “Melody Ring” by f*f while the opening theme “Hoshi no Kizuna” is performed by the voice actresses of the girls.

Extras

This release of Battle Girl High School only includes a clean version of the opening animations and closing animations as well as trailers for other releases from Sentai Filmworks.

Overall

As a result of this general lack of focus and there being way too many characters to handle Battle Girl High School fails to really generate much in the way of momentum or any real way to separate itself from the slew of other magical girl action anime on the market. This title does sport a great soundtrack and a slew of cute girls but don’t expect anything special here unless you’re already very familiar with the mobile app.

Love and Lies Complete Collection Review

Love and Lies Complete Collection

Studio: Liden Films
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.98 – Available Here

Overview

Anyone that has been keeping an eye on Japan has likely noticed that the country has been suffering from a severe decline in birth rates as well as troubles with men and women even forming couples. While there have been plenty of methods used to encourage a new generation of Japanese to form couples, the Love and Lies anime takes things a step further by being set in a world where the government decides who you will marry and punishes anyone who doesn’t follow their rules. Does this series manage to tell a satisfying story of a couple struggling to fall in love within these rules?

Story

In the not too distant future the Japanese government has implemented a special system that was created to encourage successful marriages and combat the low birth rates that have been plaguing the society. This system compares the compatibility of everyone once they turn sixteen years old and assign them a specific partner to be married to with those who disobey their assignments being given severe punishments.

Yukari Nejima is a bit different from the rest of the young people in his school in the way that he actually already has someone he loves.  In fact, before his birthday he confesses his love to his longtime friend Misaki Takasaki and she even accepts his feelings as she loves him too. Unfortunately this love ends up being something of a tragic one as the government has instead assigned Yukari a girl named Ririna Sanada to be his future wife.

Not one to be defined by what the government says, Yukari chooses to continue with his love for Misaki with Ririna even encouraging the “illegal” relationship between Yukari and Misaki. In a country where love plays little role in who ends up together in the end, can the lies told by this couple lead to a happy ending? That is the question that viewers would hope Love and Lies would try to answer but unfortunately the anime spends most of its time floundering due to poor writing, bad character development, and a complete waste of an intriguing system that is never truly explored.

The biggest issue with the series comes from the core characters themselves as not only is Yukari a rather poor choice of a main character as he is indecisive to an unbelievable degree which only exacerbates the problems that arise from the fact that the two girls that he is set up with in the series’ love triangle are just as bad. The explanation for why Ririna is so excited to see such a “forbidden” relationship blossom in front of her and why she encourages it only to fall in love with Yukari for real is ridiculous, even in a world where love is held hostage by the government’s pairing system.

Combine this with the constant back and forth with Misaki constantly struggling in silence as she cannot reveal her true relationship with Yukari as she witnesses Yukari and Ririna act like a loving couple and we have a group of main characters that have the potential to be developed but are never done so in any meaningful way, in fact by the end of the anime things only end up getting more complicated due to Yukari.

Of course this is likely due to the fact that Love and Lies is based off of a manga that is still being published in Japan but even when it comes to trying to hook viewers into reading the source material, one would hope that more development could have been made in the actual series and more themes actually examined. This is especially true in regards to the fact that the premise of the world is barely examined, especially with one specific character’s type of love never truly expressed out loud or explored in any way as to how it would work in a system such as the one Japan has instituted.

Visuals

Love and Lies is animated by Liden Films and they have done a rather nice job with the series’ art style. Although the characters’ eyes may be a bit strange at first viewers will quickly get used to it while the actual character designs are fairly standard for a romance anime such as this.

Where the series does stand out is during a number of scenes that really pull the viewer into them as the characters mull over their futures and of course, during any of the romantic scenes where the animators spent plenty of time trying to make them as fan-service heavy as possible without actually entering “ecchi” territory.

Audio

This release of the series only offers the original Japanese voice track and for the most part this isn’t much of an issue. The characters are voiced suitably enough for their roles though don’t expect any real standout performances here as even the dramatic and sad moments feel like the standard fare for a series such as this one.

The background music is also fairly simplistic in nature while the opening theme “Kanashii Ureshii” by Frederic does serve as a nice and fitting track for the series while the ending theme “Can’t You Say” by Roys is also fitting but fairly forgettable.

Extras

Sentai Filmworks’ release of Love and Lies is a rather simple release as the only bonus features include clean versions of the opening and ending animations alongside trailers for other releases from the company.

Overall

Love and Lies fails to capitalize on the potential that is built up by its interesting premise. Instead viewers are presented with a rather generic love triangle where only the most standard developments end up happening, though they do have a bit of a twist to them thanks to the trio needing to keep up the charade of sticking to the law. Unfortunately this leads to a romance series that will leave viewers wondering what the point of watching it was other than to see just how odd love can be at times.

Wargaming Donates Materials Chronicling Its History to The Strong Museum

Wargaming Donates Materials Chronicling Its History to The Strong Museum

August 9, 2018 – Wargaming, international developer and publisher of the award-winning War Trilogy that includes World of Tanks, World of Warships and World of Warplanes, recently sent a collection of materials, including digital archives, promotional items and fan-created artwork to The Strong Museum in New York.

Some of the materials, which detail the history of the company, are available for public viewing in The Strong’s eGameRevolution exhibit, and further history can be explored in World of War Games, an online exhibit launched through Google Arts and Culture.

“Wargaming is one of the most significant game developers of the past decade and has had a huge impact on the free-to-play game market,” says Andrew Borman, digital games curator at The Strong. “The types of artifacts included in this collection help us to present a well-rounded story about this company, from its founding to how it evolved its development of games over the years.”

“Wargaming’s success rests in no small part upon the work of curators at museums around the world, who have helped to preserve the vehicles and stories of World War II,” said Tracy Spaight, Director of Special Projects at Wargaming. “It is thus fitting that Wargaming—on the occasion of our 20th anniversary—should seek to preserve our company’s history, so that future historians can tell the story of the rise of the global video game industry. The Strong Museum was the logical choice for these materials, as they are at the leading edge of preserving the digital materials of the video game industry.”

The Wargaming Collection includes digital materials, such as photographs, promotional videos and trailers, along with behind-the-scenes video showing how the company’s games were created. It also features some promotional items for World of Tanks, including: a military canteen, matryoshka dolls and fan-created sculptures that highlight the impact of the series on players around the world.

eGameRevoluation itself is 5,000-square-foot exhibit dedicated to exploring the evolution of electronic games. World of War Games traces the history of Wargaming from its roots in Belarus to its emergence as a global company with offices around the world.

Says Borman, “This collection strengthens The Strong’s holdings of international video game company materials and helps capture the history of a key company in the free-to-play games marketplace—which continues to dominate the games industry.”

About Wargaming
Wargaming is an award-winning online game developer and publisher headquartered in Nicosia, Cyprus. Founded in 1998, Wargaming has grown to become one of the leaders in the gaming industry with 4500+ employees and more than 20 offices globally. SIMON BELMONT AND KING K. ROOL JOIN THE FIGHT IN SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE

SIMON BELMONT AND KING K. ROOL JOIN THE FIGHT IN SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE

Nintendo Switch Exclusive Features More Than 70 Fighters, 100 Stages, 900 Music Tracks and Counting…

9th August, 2018 – A legendary vampire hunter and a fan-favourite villain are joining the sprawling cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In a Nintendo Direct video presentation entirely focused on the Nintendo Switch exclusive, it was revealed that Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series and King K. Rool, the main antagonist from the original Donkey Kong Country games, are both joining the game as playable fighters. In addition, the Nintendo Direct also shared additional information on Echo fighters, new stages, new modes and one of the most impressive collections of music ever in a single game, with over 900 music tracks and 28 hours of music. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on 7th December.

In addition, fans can also look forward to amiibo of the five newly announced fighters Simon Belmont, Richter Belmont, King K. Rool, Chrom and Dark Samus from the Super Smash Bros. Collection to be released in the future.

To view the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety, visit the Nintendo Direct website. Some of the highlights revealed in the video include:

  • Simon Belmont: Simon’s signature weapon is, of course, his whip, with special attacks true to the Castlevania series, including the axe, cross, holy water and Grand Cross Final Smash. His stage is Dracula’s Castle, with candlesticks that release an item when destroyed. Alucard, the tragic hero from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, appears as an Assist Trophy, lending his cursed steel in battle. Richter Belmont, a descendant of Simon Belmont and the star of his own Castlevania games, also joins the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster as an Echo fighter.
  • King K. Rool: As the beloved villain from all three Donkey Kong Country games on Super NES, King K. Rool joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable fighter. He attacks with a blunderbuss that can fire cannonballs at opponents and throws his crown, which acts like a boomerang.
  • Echo Fighters: Echo fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have move sets based on other fighters, but a different visual appearance. In addition to Richter Belmont, two other echo fighters in the game are Chrom from the Fire Emblem series (echo fighter for Roy) and Dark Samus from the Metroid games (echo fighter for Samus). Echo fighters can be displayed as separate fighters on the character select screen or stacked on top of the character they are echoing. When stacked, players can change between them with the press of a button. It’s up to players to decide how they want them displayed.
  • Stages: Returning favourites with new visuals and tweaks will make up most of the stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but there are new stages in the mix as well. These include Dracula’s Castle from the Castlevania series and New Donk City Hall from Super Mario Odyssey. More than 100 stages will be in the game, but because the popular Battlefield and Omega forms can also be selected for each stage, more than 300 total stages are available right from the start! Each stage in the game will also support eight-player battles (additional accessories may be required for multiplayer modes; sold separately) and feature the ability to turn off hazards like the Yellow Devil in Wily Castle.
  • Stage Morph: In a Super Smash Bros. first, the Stage Morph option will let players seamlessly transition between two different stages. When you select this option in the rules, one stage will transform into another during battle.
  • Music: For fans that want it all, the My Music feature lets players select specific music tracks for each stage. Up until now, each stage had its own music track. But in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players can select tracks by series, so as long as they are fighting on a stage from The Legend of Zelda, for example, they can select any music track included from that franchise, including classics like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Main Theme. Counting game music tracks and other music, like in-game menus and other short musical passages there are approximately 900 compositions – that’s more than 28 hours of video game music! When playing in Handheld mode, music can be played even while the Nintendo Switch screen is turned off, turning the system into its own portable music player.
  • Items: New items being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate include the Banana Gun, Killing Edge, Bomber, Death’s Scythe, Staff, Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom and Rage Blaster, among others from a wide variety of different video game franchises. Items in the game can be picked up and used offensively and defensively in battle.
  • Pokémon: After throwing a Poké Ball in the game, many new and returning Pokémon may appear to assist in battle, including Abra, Solgaleo, Lunala, Mimikyu and the enormous Alolan Exeggutor.
  • Assist Trophies: Some of the new Assist Trophies that are joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate include Zero from the Mega Man X series, Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog, Krystal from Star Fox Adventures, Rathalos from the Monster Hunter series, Shovel Knight from, well, Shovel Knight and the evil Moon from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
  • Classic Mode: The single-player mode in which players battle against a series of fighters will return in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Each fighter has a set of stages and opponents that she or he will face.
  • Stamina Battle: In addition to Time Battle and Stock Battle, Stamina Battle is also one of the standard modes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Stamina Battle, players fight to deplete each other’s stamina until only one fighter is left standing.
  • Final Smash Meter: In addition to regular Final Smashes that can be activated after breaking a Smash Ball, the Final Smash Meter is now a selectable option. If enabled, players can charge their Final Smash Meter over the course of a battle. Once the Final Smash Meter is fully charged, players can unleash a less powerful Final Smash attack.
  • Squad Strike: When playing Squad Strike, players will participate in 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 skirmishes, with each player using either five or three consecutive fighters in one battle.
  • Tourney Mode: Up to 32 players can participate in Tourney mode, making it great for parties or events with a lot of people. And since Nintendo Switch can be played anywhere, these tournaments can even take place in unexpected places!
  • Smashdown: After battling in this mode, the previously selected fighters will no longer be available, forcing players to have to pick a different fighter for the next round. This mode favours players who are skilled with multiple fighters and encourages others to diversify their rosters.
  • Training: The improved Training mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes an exclusive stage that features a grid, used to help measure the distance and trajectory of special moves and fighter knockback.
