KOALA DICKS AND MISSING LORIKEETS APLENTY IN CONVICT GAMES’ DEBUT ‘STONER HIP-HOP NOIR’ GAME STONE

KOALA DICKS AND MISSING LORIKEETS APLENTY IN CONVICT GAMES’ DEBUT ‘STONER HIP-HOP NOIR’ GAME STONE

STONE follows the story of a slacker private investigator and his hazy quest to find his lost love Alex

Helsinki, and Melbourne, AU – Aug. 16, 2018 – World, it’s time to meet STONE.  He’s a koala.  He’s a dick.  He’s hungover.  And he’s coming to Steam for PC and MacOS later this fall.

STONE is a Hip-hop Stoner Noir Adventure Game that follows a gruff, loveable, fat koala private investigator as he pieces together his fragmented memory of the debaucherous night before. As if his morning couldn’t get any more stressful, Stone receives an ominous call threatening to upheave his entire life, just as he realizes his “chookie” Alex, a lorikeet raver and artist, is nowhere to be found.

STONE unfolds as an interactive adventure game story featuring an eccentric cast of anthropomorphic characters and absolutely no frustratingly flow-killing esoteric puzzles. As Stone stumbles through Oldtown, a place teeming with bars, clubs, theaters and more, players can take a “Hard-Ass” or “Soft Touch” approach while interrogating a menagerie of talking animals with bad attitudes and a deep repertoire of Australian slang as he tries to understand what the fuck happened last night.

“Leaving a stable AAA job in pursuit of my dream project STONE certainly wasn’t easy, nor has it become any easier, but knowing our small team at Convict Games faces almost no artistic restrictions is worth it – we have no obligations, no stakeholders, just the freedom to create whatever we want,” said writer, director and Chief Convict Greg Louden of Convict Games. “STONE is the interactive story I’ve always wanted to tell and play. I wrote, direct, programmed and produced the entire project, and it feels incredibly liberating to break free from publisher restraints and to release STONE completely independently.”

Convict Games is a new Australia-based remote video game studio operated by a team of highly experienced developers who previously worked on major entertainment projects including Remedy’s Quantum Break and Control, as well as feature films such as Gravity, World War Z, Prometheus and more. The studio is led by Gregory Louden, an Australian writer and director living in Finland who is so committed to STONE that he created and funded his own company after no other publishers would take a risk on his project.

Players can give Stone a much-needed break during his journey by engaging with side activities including dancing to brick-in-a-washing machine techno, drinking beer or cocktails, making beats, taking a smoke break and even watching real and full-length public domain classic films such as Night of the Living Dead and Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages.

STONE may not be for everyone, but we hope it’s wild, artistic nature, and Australian influences resonate with those craving a narrative unafraid to ‘go there,’” said Louden.  “We’ve been working on STONE for nearly two years, tapping into the influential works of counterculture icons including Charles Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson and Thomas Pynchon, classic stoner noir films such as The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice, and other narrative-driven games including Firewatch and Grim Fandango.”

Music is also a huge inspiration for the Convict Games team, and STONE’s heavily-curated soundtrack features licensed tracks from several upcoming indie artists around the world. Each song was chosen to reflect the myriad moods in STONE’s story and explores diverse genres such as hip-hop, stoner metal, house and more.

KONGREGATE SIGNS FLOTSAM, A HAPPY-GO-LUCKY POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL PC GAME

KONGREGATE SIGNS FLOTSAM, A HAPPY-GO-LUCKY POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL PC GAME

Kongregate’s latest announced title is a must sea…

San Francisco (Aug 16th, 2018) – Kongregate, a leading publisher of PC, console, mobile, and web games, has partnered with Pajama Llama Games to announce Flotsam, the feel-good post-apocalyptic garbage-town builder! Flotsam will enter Steam Early Access early 2019 and will be available for both PC and Mac platforms, and will be playable at Gamescom 2018 in the Indie Arena Booth in Hall 10.1.

The survival-based town builder is set in a waterlogged world and features moving towns, procedural world generation, and an eclectic group of survivors. Players will manage a floating village community as it sails across an endless ocean. In their fight to survive, they’ll depend on recycled garbage and scrap, used to construct structures that catch fish and create drinkable water. On their journey, they’ll encounter other stranded strangers, dangerous sea animals, and mysterious ruins and wreckages.

Flotsam is a really fun project; the game’s vibrant atmosphere brings a lot of character and personality to the often-grim survival genre,” said Kongregate’s Director of Production Kevin DuPuy. “From building food trucks in your floating garbage town to everyone’s favorite character ‘Steven’ the seagull, Pajama Llama has somehow made a post-apocalyptic, fight for survival setting that is both colorful and inviting.”

As players steer their town and explore the sprawling, dynamic environment, they‘ll uncover tall ruins, underwater cities, and reefs full of sea life and garbage. They’ll have to choose which obstacles to avoid and which to scavenge as they drift through the harsh ocean world. Players will rescue and care for drifters, who transform garbage, driftwood, and flotsam into boats and buildings, allowing them to collect rainwater, hunt for various creatures, and reel up scrap from the expansive sea floor.

Flotsam’s theme originated from an animation project. One of our founders created a short about people living in a flooded world. We took this spark and threw it into a prototype, which eventually grew to become Flotsam,” said Juda-Ben Gordier, co-founder at Pajama Llama. “We fell in love with the combination of the setting and gameplay. We all had an urge to create the game, so we did.”

Brand-New Characters Unleash Striking New Powers in the Latest One Versus Thousands Action Game

Hertfordshire, 16th August 2018 – KOEI TECMO Europe revealed an array of new characters today for Warriors Orochi 4, the latest instalment in the popular one-versus-thousands action game series. Fan-favourite characters from across the DYNASTY WARRIORS and SAMURAI WARRIORS franchises return to the battlefield when they are threatened by an unknown force; but as they uncover the mystery surrounding their fate, they discover that they are not alone.

Four new gods, each equipped with powerful mystic weaponry known as Sacred Treasures, join Warriors Orochi 4’s extensive roster; including: Perseus, Ares, Athena, and Odin. Perseus – the hero of Olympus and demigod son of Zeus – hearing news that his father is meddling in the human world, decides to rise to fight alongside them. Meanwhile, Athena – the wise and powerful goddess of wisdom – learning of Perseus’ plans descends to earth to capture him. She uses magic powers to manipulate the size of her Sacred Treasure, the shield Aegis, which she throws at her opponents to turn them to stone. At the same time, Ares – the god of war – fights passionately to fulfil his own beliefs – that the gods should dominate humanity. Wielding his twin spears to transform into a vigorous dragon, Typhon unleashes a stream of fire on those unfortunate enough to cross its path. The ruler of Asgard, Odin, also joins the fray using Gungnir, a unique spear which summons magical blades to its tip to become a powerful drill that can quickly eliminate any who stand in his way.

In addition to the four new gods, a number of pre-order bonuses for both physical and digital versions were also announced. Those who pre-order the physical version, from independent retailers through Centresoft, will receive alternative costumes for Xu Shu, Mitsunari Ishida, Da Ji, Wang Yuanji, Wang Yi, Lady Hayakawa, Xingcai, Guo Jia, Takatora Todo, and Yoshitsugu Otani. Alternatively, if players choose to pre-order digitally on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, they will receive all of the previously mentioned bonuses plus two extra bonuses: an elusive unicorn and the mighty Pegasus. Digital pre-orders on the PlayStation 4 will be rewarded with Pegasus alongside a special Warriors Orochi 4 theme.

To further showcase the compelling new playable characters, Sacred Treasures, and pre-order bonuses, KOEI TECMO released a Character Introduction Trailer alongside a fresh asset batch featuring screenshots of the new characters, a look at interactions between a variety of new and existing characters, and a first look at Character Deification – a brand-new gameplay feature which bestows characters the ultimate power of the mythological gods.

Warriors Orochi 4 is currently in development for the PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System, Nintendo Switch™, the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and digitally on Windows PC via Steam®, and is slated for release across Europe on the 19th October 2018.

Asymmetric Horror Game Daemonical Tears its Way onto Steam Early Access

Fearem launched its asymmetric multiplayer horror game Daemonical on Steam Early Access. The game pits four players against a blood thirsty demon in a desperate race against the clock. At the start of the game, all five players are human, but one is possessed by the demon. The human team must either complete the banishing ritual or survive until morning to win. Since the demon cannot be killed, the human team must rely on stealth, trickery, and stall tactics to escape the demon’s grasp. Dead players can still help the surviving team members. As a flying ball of light, dead players can distract the demon or collect precious intelligence to share with the team.

On the other hand, the demon is able to take on their form at any time, sowing distrust among the players. To win, the demon must slay all four human players.

Daemonical currently runs only on Windows. The Steam Early Access price is $14.99 USD, with the price to rise after launch in about a year’s time. Currently the game has fully playable, but there is only one demon. The plan is to add more demons, maps, game modes, and bot support as development progresses.

Phantom Doctrine Review

Phantom Doctrine

DeveloperCreativeForge Games

FormatPlayStation 4PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 14 Aug 2018
Price: $39.99USD – Available Here

Overview

Welcome to The Cold War. We are in a middle of a tense space race where the goal isn’t much of an exploration as it is to get there before the other guys. The USA & Russia relations are at an all-time low, with suspicion and paranoia everywhere. A perfect setup for a turn-based spy RPG. I got interested in Phantom Doctrine because it just radiates XCOM atmosphere from almost every screenshot I’ve seen. The gameplay looks intriguing so all I need it a good story and this might be a perfect game to spend my summer vacation on. Let’s see how it holds up.

Story

While the choice of playing the game as an ex-CIA or an ex-KGB agent seems intriguing, the reality is something else. I imagined I would be in a role of one “good” side, then after completion play the game through the perspective of the other side. No matter who you side with, you share a common enemy known as The Beholder Initiative, a vague and mysterious spy group just like yours. The devs certainly didn’t hold back with spy cliches, so you will find twist and turns after almost every mission. Eventually, it will be hard to keep track of who is who and who are you now fighting against. It tells a lot about the complexity and absurdity of the story where the game’s incredibly convoluted gameplay is only the second most confusing thing about the Phantom Doctrine. Speaking of gameplay, strap yourself in cause we’re going for one doozy ride…

Gameplay

I have a friend who is a serious masochist when it comes to XCOM games. He plays almost always on Ironman mode and even goes an extra mile to download mods that will make the gameplay even more challenging. Phantom Doctrine would seem like a perfect game for him to push the boundaries of how much pain he is willing to endure. My first mission introduced me to some basics of turn-based play.  Things like attacking, hiding from enemies, taking them down discreetly, infiltrating compounds and making a run for it with stolen files. It was a short, 5-minute tutorial mission and after that, I was on my own. The second mission went in a hilariously bad fashion. Encouraged by my choice of easy difficulty and laidback tutorial, I figured this task of stealing top secret files from a base in Pakistan would be a cakewalk. And it was, up until the evacuation part. All of my three agents got gunned down in four turns, forcing me to replay the mission. I decided to be a bit more focused next time and take full advantage of my agents skills, made sure to disable every camera, incapacitate every civilian and paid close attention to the movement of the guards. While I have no issue blaming myself when playing goes wrong (Dark Souls taught me that) I could not help but to think that some things would be considerably easier with certain gameplay tweaks. One thing would be the camera. Too many times I found it pretty hard to see where the enemies are (even with rotating and checking every corner) since, in the next turn, they would pop up out of nowhere and gun me down like nothing. And sometimes the AI would be inconsistent. Guards would either go in full blind bat mode and sometimes they wouldn’t have issues noticing me from a nearby building. Phantom Doctrine is a game that requires a lot of involvement from you and rewards you with a big payout. The payout in a form of knowing you went against all odds and survived in the end, took down every guard and fooled every security system. The gameplay later expands on micromanaging your spy base, keeping tabs on an enemy organization and collecting clues in order to unravel a major conspiracy. There is also a constant danger of having an infiltrated spy in your group that turns their back on you once it is too late. Your captured agents can turn up a few days later but the question is were they brainwashed during that time and do you have now an enemy in your ranks? A neat gameplay mechanic that amplifies the paranoia of a Cold War era. Once you get tired of a campaign, there is also a multiplayer with only basic features. You can host a match or join one with no additional tuning. It feels  (and plays) like it’s thrown in the game just for the sake of being there.

Visuals

A lot of the visuals in Phantom Doctrine feel like they a couple of years behind modern games. While I liked the art style of still images in the cutscenes, the rest didn’t impress me much. Character models are grainy and lifeless and level design could certainly use more creativity (and interesting locations). It’s usually a different military base every now and then or a slightly changed building placement of that top secret facility you played three levels back. Although to be fair, there were a couple of levels where I was pleasantly surprised with vibrant colors just when I lost all hope that this game could have any.

Audio

While I can’t say many good things about the visuals, at least the audio didn’t disappoint. The soundtrack is perfect from the first to the very last note. You are accompanied by a wonderful mix of tense noir jazz, eerie and ominous notes while sneaking around and even the composed environment in your base of operations offers some enjoyable tunes. On the other hand, voice acting leaves a lot to be desired with over-emphasized character dialogue and some really baffling accents.

Overall

While I appreciate the Phantom Doctrine for trying to give us something new and different, many aspects of the game end up being too convoluted or needlessly confusing.  The story is drawn out, and gameplay mechanics incredibly punishing so much that they play a dangerous game with your patience.  I can only recommend it if you’re on a lookout for some masochistic experience where one wrong move can make a difference between a completed objective or a full squad wipe.

BULLET HELL, HEAVEN AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN – WITCH THIEF DEBUTS SOON FOR PC, CONSOLE VERSIONS TO FOLLOW

A snarky Witch Thief seeks a fabled grimoire in this 3D bullet hell shooter featuring a coven of sassy playable witches with entwined stories and a snappy dress sense

Canberra, 15 Aug 2018: The team at Cardboard Keep today formally announced Witch Thief will be arriving soon on Steam and Itch for PC. On a quest to steal an enchanted grimoire, a sassy sorceress embarks on a perilous journey through arena-based ambushes by possessed dolls and arcane bosses. Naturally those guarding the tome won’t give it up without a fight, so our heroine must do what she does best: that is, sneaking in the front door and taking it anyway!

Players can unlock three more playable and equally feisty witch heroines with different powers, each with a personal story told through unique dialogue, entwined inextricably with the Witch Thief’s own tale.

‘We’ve strived to bring the characters to life and bring a new more story focused vibe to the shmup genre. Coupled with a 3D perspective that’s adjustable on the fly, and a range of difficulty levels to suit all players, we’re happy that it’ll hit the spot for a wide variety of audiences, not just the bullet hell aficionado,” explains Tim Bermanseder, co-founder, Cardboard Keep and project lead on the game.

Game features:

  • Explore five distinctive zones from spooky forest glades to magnificent cathedral vaults, each with multiple boss battles and ambush arenas
  • Flexible difficulty – from standard limited-life modes with ramped challenges to an innovative “Chill” mode – where losing a life merely resets to weapon defaults
  • Adjust the player camera’s vertical angle on the fly to best deal with the patterns of attack, and use focus control to concentrate both projectile spread and visual perspective
  • Controls optimised for mouse and keyboard or game controller for fluid, twin-stick action
  • A cast of memorable bosses, from the castle’s guardian angel to the chuckling bishop!

Each witch has her own reason for seeking the ancient grimoire, and players will experience journeys of redemption, betrayal, bravery, wisdom, corruption and possession in their hunt for the charmed tome – and the mysterious doll maker…

Witch Thief is crafted by indie team Cardboard Keep. It’s due out for Windows PC in 2018, to be followed by console versions next year.

Prepare for Unnatural, Demented Creatures that Track Your Every Move – Will You be Able to Survive?
Frayed white curtains flutter in an unwelcome breeze as rain whips against the side of the manor. The air is thick, as nothing living had passed through it in quite some time. Demented creatures twisted by the demonic entities that possess the house stalk their prey, filled with rage and murderous intent.
