Video Review

Overview

Everreach: Project Eden is a story driven action RPG. The game is set on the planet Eden, home of Earth’s next colony for the ultrarich. Trouble is afoot as a mysterious mutiny has broken out among the scientists, technicians, and construction crews building the settlement for the incoming colonists. Nora Harwood and her team has been sent to the planet to investigate and put an end to the mutiny.

Story

Everreach: Project Eden aims to be an epic space drama but fails horribly. The dialogue is dry and feels forced at times. The characters are shallow and often painfully cliché. The story generally swings between dull and confusing. Major plot points do not always make sense and some just appear from nowhere. The ending is so abrupt, it almost felt like a car accident. It’s as if the writer originally had a story for a game three to four times larger than Everreach but was forced to aggressively hack away at the script to make it fit.

Gameplay

Everreach: Project Eden is a mess. The level design is awful. The game is extremely short to begin with, easily beaten in a few hours. A large chunk of the game consists of vehicle sections where players simply navigate around long maps until they run into a cluster of enemies or dodge incoming fire. These sections feel like they were hastily bolted into the game to artificially lengthen it. Another major level of the game is just walking simulator where players go from audio log to audio log. The entire thing could have easily been replaced with a cut scene. The game has plenty of obvious side paths with bonus loot, but they have no compelling puzzles that challenge the player in a positive way. Certain chests are locked with one of two puzzles. One challenges players to connect all the dots under 30 seconds, while the other requires player to dodge incoming objects for 30 seconds. Oddly enough, the dots challenge only gives players one try. The dodging challenge lets players try as many times as they want, if they can endure the frustrating randomness of the puzzle.

Combat is terrible. The gun play feels mushy and bland. Players only have access to a pistol and a rifle. The pistol is too inaccurate, too slow, too short ranged, and too weak to be useful. The crosshairs try to replicate a gun sight but are too large to be useful at range.  The hit boxes and models are poor. Enemy hitboxes don’t always match the models. Weapons often clip through the objects, allowing players to safely shoot at enemy while hidden behind cover. The AI is stupid.  Many times, the AI will stand in place and try to shoot it out instead of making any real attempt to get into cover to flank. Other times, the AI does not respond to gunfire, content to let the player empty a magazine into their back.

The controls are not great. Camera movement is simple and sometime unintuitive, especially when dealing with enemies lower than the player. Nova feels clumsy and often gets stuck on corners. The lack of a jump button makes navigation more frustrating than it needs to be.

The rare bright spot is the skill progression system. It’s a web of skills and buffs in the vein of Path of Exile and Final Fantasy’s orb level system. While players won’t fill the entire web, there is a lot of flexibility for players to decide if they want a spellcaster type experience, a straight shooter, or something in between.

The PC version is poor. The options are extremely limited. While the game was reasonably stable, it oftentimes felt like a cheap PC port. Key bindings can only be configured in the main menu, and certain keys are hard coded.

Visuals

The visuals are a two-part problem. First, the small dev team may have tackled a bigger project than they could handle. The animations are rough. Characters in cutscenes are practically bobble heads with the exaggerated head movement but are contrasted with the stone-like facial animation.

The second part of the problem is purely bad stylistic choices. Cutscenes are hard to watch due to the aggressive use of camera cuts and an unnecessary shaky-cam style. The worst of the shaky-cam has been patched out, but the cutscenes still pretty disorienting. The artists have also overused visual effects like bloom. Careful use of visual tricks at the right time can accent a game, but Everreach: Project Eden really demonstrates how bad things look when artists hand out effects like candy on Halloween. The result is a mess that makes the player feel like the artists are trying to hide something worse underneath all that blur.

Audio

The audio experience is mediocre. The sound effects are dull. Gunfire lacks any and all impact, almost bordering on sounding like a toy gun from the local dollar store. The music is good but the track list is extremely limited, so players will hear the same handful of tracks in the two to four hours it takes to beat the game. Finally, the voice acting is rough. Most of the actors are weak, but the actor who plays Jay does a fantastic job. Unfortunately, the main character Nora is among the worst due to her awkward almost monotonous delivery.

Overall

Everreach: Project Eden is the type of game that may have looked good on paper, but the execution is painfully flawed. The story feels like it’s seen the cutting block too many times to count. The gameplay is dull. The visual style is poorly thought out, and the audio experience is lukewarm at best. It’s current state makes me wonder if Everreach was a victim of overambition or was simply a poorly thought out game to start. We may never know the answer, but at least you know enough to just avoid this game.

Award-winning comic book publisher and game publisher to develop premiere video games from Valiant’s expansive catalog of IP

NEW YORK – 21 Dec. – Valiant Entertainment is teaming up with Blowfish Studios to develop a slate of all-new action-packed video games featuring the popular characters from Valiant’s Superhero Universe. This will mark the first multi-platform Valiant video games since Acclaim’s acquisition of the company back in the ’90s.

Valiant Entertainment is home to the third-largest connected universe in comics, behind Marvel and DC, with over 2,000 characters. Since DMG Entertainment’s acquisition of Valiant in late 2018, the global media and entertainment company has proven its ambitious plans to grow its presence in Hollywood, making its first foray into theaters this coming February with the much-anticipated release of Sony’s “Bloodshot” starring Vin Diesel.

In addition to the newly announced video game partnership, Valiant has multiple projects in the works, including an upcoming “Harbinger” feature with Paramount Studios and a “Quantum & Woody” TV series to be executive produced by the Russo Bros. On the publishing side, Valiant’s comic sales have risen 10% this year, along with six Valiant titles cracking the top 100.

“We’re thrilled to bring Valiant’s characters back into the video game industry and give fans the opportunity to play as their favorite superheroes,” said Dan Mintz, Founder and CEO of DMG Entertainment. “Translating these characters and stories to video games could not come at a more exciting time as we introduce the world to the Valiant Universe on the big screen with the Bloodshot release. These games are poised to become further proof of these characters’ immense potential as anchors in pop culture.”

“Getting the chance to work with Valiant’s Universe will certainly bring forth some refreshing new experiences for fans and gamers alike to explore,” stated Michael Bolden, Head of Publishing at Blowfish Studios. “I’ve always been a fan of characters like Ninjak, Bloodshot, and X-O Manowar. Valiant’s Universe presents a wealth of unique characters and rich stories that we look forward to introducing to fans as an interactive experience worldwide.”

The video game developer is delving deep into the history of the Valiant Universe to craft an exhilarating adventure for fans. “Valiant is a mainstay of superhero fiction, and with their amazing history in comics and games I am excited to bring their next game to life,” remarked Ben Lee, Managing Director at Blowfish Studios. “We look forward to sharing our vision of the Valiant Universe to gaming fans worldwide.”

The Holidays Arrive in World of Warships: Legends

The Holidays Arrive in World of Warships: Legends

The Last Battleship Campaign begins, the Yamato arrives, and High-Tier gameplay is improved!

December 20 – World of Warships: Legends is celebrating the Holidays with massive events! Players can participate in the Last Battleship campaign to earn the Jean Bart, build and command the mighty Yamato, and experience better battles through a second wave of player-driven changes. With lots of holiday presents, events, giveaways, and sales, there’s plenty to do in World of Warships: Legends this Holiday season.

The Last Battleship campaign has started and will continue until the next update. Players can earn the last battleship ever completed—Jean Bart. The historical Jean Bart was completed and entered service in 1955, almost 10 years after HMS Vanguard. Though originally a 1936 design, Jean Bart was redesigned with experience from World War II and her sister ship Richelieu. In-game, she is all about speed. Equipped with an Engine Boost and a Main Battery Reload Booster, Jean Bart can flank and unleash devastation on a whim. Players who complete the Last Battleship campaign with Admiralty Backing will receive the Jean Bart as the final reward. On the way through the Last Battleship campaign, players will earn rewards, equipment, and the special Santa Containers which have a chance to drop a premium ship.

At last, the legendary Yamato will appear in World of Warships: Legends. Any player that completes the Giant of the Sea missions can try out the Yamato starting on December 30th. Yamato is the first Legendary Tier ship in the game and is the most powerful ship in the game, bar none. She is nearly unstoppable thanks to her immense 460 mm guns and best-in-class survivability. In history, the Yamato was the largest and most powerful battleship ever built, and she retains that spot in World of Warships: Legends. Players won’t want to miss the chance to helm the Yamato. She will only be available during the Yamato event and will disappear afterwards for further tuning. Think of the event as an extended test drive!

There is also a special currency that can be obtained from both events—Sakura Coins. If players acquire enough of these Sakura coins by completing missions, opening Super Santa Containers, and taking the Yamato into battle they will have the opportunity to buy two premium destroyers, the Tier VI Asashio and the Tier III G-101. In order to get Asashio, players will need to open a few Super Santa Containers, which are available through the campaign and the store. There are also massive New Years sales to help players kick off 2020 with a bang.

In addition, there has been several balance changes to improve high-tier battles. Most Tier VII cruisers received improved survivability, and several Tier VI and VII ships were changed based on their performance in battle. High-tier map spawn locations were also adjusted to allow for more tactical flexibility in battle, thanks to player feedback. World of Warships: Legends has seen good progress throughout 2019. The game now has 5 main nations with 13 lines of ships to progress through, which is almost double the amount of ships that were available at launch. The roster of legendary commanders keeps growing as well, with over 35 represented. World of Warships: Legends is set to bring even more nations, ships, and commanders to the game in 2020!

CREATE AN OFFICER AND LEAD THE CHARGE ACROSS ANCIENT CHINA IN ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS XIV

CREATE AN OFFICER AND LEAD THE CHARGE ACROSS ANCIENT CHINA IN ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS XIV

Control an Officer of Your Own Creation, Earn a Promotion, then Lead the Troops to Victory!

Hertfordshire, 19th December 2019 – Today, KOEI TECMO Europe and famed developer Kou Shibusawa introduced all-new gameplay elements to their greatly-anticipated strategy game, Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV (RTK14), including the first information on officer creation, promotion, and search. The return of the iconic franchise is set to launch across the West on the 28th February 2020 for the PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System and digitally on Windows PC via Steam®.

Over 1,000 officers are featured in RTK14, each with their own traits and characteristics to help crush opposing armies and outwit enemies. But if following the likes of Liu Bei or Guan Yu isn’t what you’re looking for, gamers will also be able to freely create new officers from scratch. Creation tools include everything from the officer’s name to their abilities and face. Additionally, specific setting such as the officer’s politics, character traits, tactics, and favourite formations will also be customisable to help create the officer of your choice, whether it’s purely from imagination or the polygonal resurrection of some of history’s more famous military minds.

If creating officers isn’t your thing, gamers will also be able to search for officers with unique character traits, recruit them, then employ them in battle. Take command of officers with character traits such as “Insightful” or “Recruiter” to scout other officers who may become helpful allies in your quest to control Ancient China. RTK14 requires a lot of specialised personnel in order to conquer the map, so searches and recruitment are vital conditions to advancing your army, especially when it comes to utilising the officer’s set character traits. For example: Officers that possess traits such as “Duelist,” “Heroic,” or Vigorous” can execute duels on the battlefield, and during the automated duels, officers with the traits “Duelist” and “Vigorous” are given the upper hand. When defeated in battle, the losing officer may be wounded, captured, or may even die, and the units of the losing side will have their morale severely lowered. When a unit’s morale reaches zero, it is annihilated, so the character traits Duelist, Heroic, and Vigorous become extremely powerful in battle. Other traits like “Divination” will help prevent disasters like plagues and locusts from attacking your base, while a trait like “Abundant Harvest” will help increase supply income. Meanwhile, some officers will also feature character traits such as “Reckless” and “Irritable” and while powerful, these officers will be difficult to control. To find ultimate success in RTK14, gamers will need to figure out how to effectively find or create the right officer for the right position.

As officers become more and more successful throughout the game and begin to take over cities, the imperial court will bestow a “Royal Rank.” The bestowed Royal Rank will provide various benefits such as increasing the number of commands that can be executed during diplomacy or being able to designate the timing to trigger optional tactics to the troops. When the Royal Rank is “Duke” or higher, attack targets can be set by province, and campaigns can be executed to district units across multiple bases. Regular marches require a single order for each unit, whereas campaigns can be executed thanks to a single order across all units, helping strategies unfold in a more dynamic and effortless fashion, establishing Royal Rank as key to officer and army success in the ultimate quest to take control over Ancient China.

Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV is available for pre-order now at GAME and independent retailers through Centresoft. Those who purchase any version of the game within the first 2 weeks of launch will be able to download the additional scenario ‘Battle of Yiling’ for free.

KOEI TECMO Europe also released Episode 2 of their Developer Diary series today to let fans dive deeper into the creation of the renowned grand-strategy series, with Producer Echigoya-san.

World of Tanks Blitz Gets Festive in the Lead up to New Year

Enjoy great holiday gifts and take on a special in-game event with fantastic rewards including the Tier X VK 90.01 (P)

December 19, 2019 — With the holidays fast approaching World of Tanks Blitz is getting their players in the mood with a visit to the festive workshop of Chris Dev, which has something for everyone. The man behind the event has created a 15-stage challenge, which features a mountain of great rewards including a grand prize: the Tier X VK 90.01 (P) and a special camo just for this behemoth.

On the way to this German heavy, tankers will be able to get their hands on the Pz. V/IV, a German medium tank, and a special in-game currency which can be used to shake a mysterious snow globe. On top of all this, every day players can grab three different chests off Chris, which are full to the brim with a selection of goodies including Premium, Credits, Camos and more.

Tankers can maximize their festive yield by playing a satellite browser game that Chris himself has developed. Find the way out of an 8-bit labyrinth, collect up to 21 chests and other valuable in-game items, and pass all the challenges to receive a special festive avatar.

While the 15-stage challenge is for those who have Tier V or higher vehicles, every player will get something special for the holidays. After all, it’s a time for giving. Our resident Santa Claus, Chris, has prepared a festive stocking for everyone whether they’ve been naughty or nice. Every tanker who logs in between December 23, 2019 and January 12, 2020 will get the BT-SV, a shiny Tier III Soviet light tank, a garage slot to house it, a unique New Year’s camo, 200,020 credits and 2 certificates for a day of Premium.

More information about the event, its rewards and the festive gifts can be found here.
