Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition Review

Developer: Square Enix
Publisher:Square Enix
Platforms:PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Xbox One, Switch, PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Dragon Quest XI is by no means new, but absolutely was astounding when it released three years ago. That title brought about smooth combat and opened up a world and franchise like never before, finally delivering fans a taste of Dragon Quest in a fully realized experience. Three years later, and a year after the Switch saw the same, the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are getting their upgrade of the game with Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, adding several key features. How does it play out all over again? Let’s find out.

Story

I don’t really know if everyone has played this title the first time around, but regardless, we already covered the story for this title once before, so it would be best to speak on what the Definitive Edition actually brings to the table, as it is actually quite a lot. Of course, our silent protagonist is the Luminary and the hero for this adventure, but there are several other team members who you met along the journey who now have a lot more to say. Players will be able to participate in flashback sequences, and even obtain new party members based on a solo experience with each character, fleshing out the narrative immensely this time around as we learn of motives that actually make sense and help define this lovely cast who already felt realized enough the first go. I loved the first title for its story, and it was such a happy feeling to get these little character arcs peppered in this time around.

Gameplay

So, what can you add to such a deep and rewarding role-playing game? For starters, how about the full 3DS version of the game (which was a traditional 2D Dragon Quest featuring almost everything, just in a different perspective), and the ability to switch back and forth with the 3D version at the start of each chapter? At first, I was a bit taken back that you had to basically restart a chapter or play it completely to progress in this fashion, as you have to go to a church, save, and then go back if you are not in the right portion of a chapter, but honestly, this adds replay value as the 2D mode moves a lot quicker, so if you have beat the game recently, this may just be your favorite way to play. There is something really satisfying about seeing these locales yet again, but in a new way that truly make it feel like a new experience, and that alone is easily worth the lower price-tag. The full original title is also here, which I would recommend to those new to this entry as it was and still is a very special little game.

Instead of seeing enemies in the 2D mode, battles happen at random, which mimics the same mechanics of the classic fare. The game also incorporates older menu styles and a different HUD, where the fights should feel much slower, yet nostalgic to longtime fans. I also feel like the game is much easier at not getting lost, as there are now NPCs to guide you when they believe you are too weak to move on this time around, so you don’t grind unnecessarily or waste time moving forward too early. It is a far more optimized and thought-out edition that seems to have listened to real feedback of the players, as almost every complaint has been addressed.

I am just speaking about the new features, but honestly, the original 3D game is still very much at the core here, with all of the discovery, exploration, and little nods to the long-time franchise that warrants interest of fans new and old. I do feel that the Definitive Edition brings out reason to play a game you might have sunk in over 80 hours into all over again, which I personally think is rare for this genre as a whole.

Visuals & Audio

The graphics for the 3D mode have been enhanced just a tad, so textures are just a little more detailed and the original environments and character models look sharper this time around in beautiful 4K resolution. The 2D mode is what we really need to talk about, as even though some may feel that since this game was already released in Japan for a portable, it would be a bit of a bland offering. Instead, this allows you to get more of an authentic take on nearly every inch of the original, but with the more condensed overworld and more simplistic animations and menus. It is absolutely a two in one offering of Dragon Quest XI, where the player can now simply explore comparisons, on top of taking in that is already in front of them.

The audio also has a lot to offer, as players now can be granted an orchestral soundtrack this time around, and while optional, you definitely can hear the difference in a major way. Those who choose can also be treated to the Japanese voices through dialogue sequences, and while I still prefer the already on point English voice tracks due to the quality, I was more than happy with this addition as well as it just adds yet another layer to take this new take home.

Overall

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is actually what it says it is, definitive. It isn’t some DLC stapled to an original release, but a more optimized, fluid, and fully realized experience that players new or old will be able to get something from, and feel absolutely giddy as they get to take in new changes that make sense without harming what was delivered over three years ago. I know that may sound a bit much in terms of praise, but it in an age where we get these same subtitles put on second releases that maybe have a new skin or that suddenly include pre-order content for the same price as the original title, it is lovely to see a studio put so much love into making this entry matter at the end of a generation.

Survive a zombie apocalypse in the Wild West. Sounds crazy? Good! Gunslingers & Zombies – an action-adventure strategy game is coming to PC in January

As if the Wild West wasn’t already dangerous enough with its revolver duels, rowdies, headhunters, and whatnot – now a new threat has emerged. It’s green, it looks weird, smells like hell, makes nasty guttural sounds, and finds a rather perverse pleasure in brains. Gunslingers & Zombies will face each other on Steam Early Access on January 15th, 2021.

Zombies. Of all the bad things that could potentially happen, of course, it’s zombies. Now with the undead on board, the Wild West has gone REALLY wild – and in a very wrong way.

Add the game to your wishlist on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1059740/Gunslingers__Zombies/) if you’re up for a crazy story and even crazier gameplay.

ABOUT GUNSLINGERS & ZOMBIES

Say goodbye to the Wild West, and welcome to the Weird West! Here, only one rule applies, and it’s really very simple – shoot (fast and accurately) or get eaten. Yes, yes, that’s not what you’ve been promised indeed. “Go West,” they said. “It’ll be fun,” they said. “Adventure, fame, easy money, and beautiful women await,” they said. The problem is, instead of it all that, you ended up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, trying not to get eaten alive. So the only thing you can do now is try to survive in this weird post-apocalyptic world and help a gang of gunslingers not die like greenhorns. In short: shoot first, ask questions later, and maybe you’ll get the chance to get even with whoever advised you go on this cursed trip.

Gunslingers & Zombies is an action-adventure strategy game that’s hilariously mixing two beloved pop-culture themes: the Wild West and the undead. Become one of the triggermen facing the zombie apocalypse. Plan your tactics and bring them to life fighting turn-based duels. Enjoy the Wild West with a twist in a lightweight, post-apocalyptic scenario, where nothing is normal. Face a variety of themed undead – like the mighty Buffalo Zombie! Scavenge for supplies, ammo, food, and medicine. Use your lockpicking skills to get access to rare power-ups. Let those zombies taste your pistols, rifles, canons, or knives, and make sure they’ll regret the day they were… erhm… they went undead.

GUNSLINGERS & ZOMBIES MAIN FEATURES

  • Enjoy a Weird, Zombie West – A light-hearted, post-apocalyptic scenario, where nothing is normal awaits.
  • Plan your tactics, and fight turn-based duels – Let’s yeeehaaw those undead!
  • Face zombies you’ve never seen before – Warning! You may never want to have buffalo wings again after your encounter with this green meat.
  • Use a variety of weapons – From pistols, through rifles, to canons, knives, and many more!
  • Scavenge for supplies – Resources will be limited, so make sure you have space for gathering ammo or medicine in your war strategy.
  • Make good use of rare items – The harder it is to get them, the more valuable they are, so make sure to practice your lockpicking skills.

Gunslingers & Zombies is being developed by Live Motion Games and will launch on Steam Early Access on January 15th, 2021. The game will be published by Gaming Factory.

More information can be found on Steam and Facebook.

Ruins Of The Ancients, Prescott Starbase, Design Tools, HOTAS Support, and More Shown in final 2020 EVERSPACE 2 Kickstarter Update

ROCKFISH Games shares new location concepts, plans for HOTAS support, and developer insights into new encounter design tools created for EVERSPACE™ 2 in their latest Kickstarter production update

Hamburg, Germany – December 4, 2020 – In their last production update of the year, ROCKFISH Games thanks the many supporters of EVERSPACE™ 2 for their understanding regarding the postponed start of the Early Access version on Steam to January 2021. The new schedule also allows additional content that will be playable at the start of Early Access.

The team has shared a visual teaser of what the “The Ancients‘ Rifts ”stretch goal from the Kickstarter campaign will bring to EVERSPACE™ 2. While the additional endgame sector offering extra tough challenges and high-quality loot won’t be available in Early Access, observant pilots can discover the remains of ancient ruins of the mysterious extraterrestrial race, known from its predecessor in the star system Union.

The team shared more information about the Prescott Starbase, also located in the recently revealed star system Union, a bustling trading hub in EVERSPACE™ 2. While independent Freelancers run extremely profitable businesses in high-tech gear, medical supplies, and mining resources in the clouds high above planet Culver, Outlaws (a faction fans will recall from the first EVERSPACE installment) sell goods of questionable origin for high profit to the highest bidder at the Prescott Starbase black market. Prescott Starbase can be visited from the first day of Early Access and will be expanded over the course of the next year with additional functions and new content.

Furthermore, ROCKFISH Games shared details about the new internal “Enemy Caster” tool their Level and Gameplay Designer have been using to rapidly create and test enemy encounters. This new tool allows the team to create and to playtest a wide variety of scenarios much faster, which will result in more interesting battles spread throughout EVERSPACE™ 2. For the first two star systems, which players will experience during Early Access, over two dozen enemy types have been created, and the team will continuously expand on this roster over the next 12 months to populate the planned six to eight hand-designed star systems in the final game.

Also, due to high demand from hardcore space simulation fans, the Early Access version of EVERSPACE™ 2 launching this January will offer fully configurable HOTAS support and presets for popular Logitech and Thrustmaster joysticks hardware setups. A full list of Early Access supported hardware is available in the Kickstarter update.

ROCKFISH Games will be giving their community early looks into development during their usual Friday livestream airing on Twitch and YouTube 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CEST / 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm EDT / 11:00 am to 1:00 pm PDT.

About ROCKFISH Games GmbH

ROCKFISH Games is a 100% independent game studio specializing in high-quality Unreal Engine 4 action video games for PC and consoles. Industry veterans Michael Schade and Christian Lohr founded ROCKFISH Games to create a new breed of adrenalin-filled adventures for space shooter fans through their acclaimed EVERSPACE™ IP. After spending over 20 years as joint entrepreneurs in the 3D graphics and mobile gaming space, Schade and Lohr built ROCKFISH Games from the ground up alongside a small team of veteran developers to the current studio of 25 cherry-picked developers and community experts from across the industry.

Using Kickstarter as a platform to build a new community in 2015, ROCKFISH Games reached a runaway success with EVERSPACE™, which has sold over 1.5 million copies on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation since release. Building on these successes and propelled by yet another wildly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2019, ROCKFISH Games is dedicated to crafting a next-gen open-world space shooter experience driven by quality storytelling to delight space action affectionados in their upcoming title, EVERSPACE™ 2.

In the deepest recesses of the secret tunnel, players will face off against one of four final bosses selected at random – Majini, G (Stage 2), Nemesis or Tyrant.

Boss Skills Introduction:

  • G (Stage 2): G (Stage 2) quickly rushes towards players with its huge and twisted sharp claw. It will leap into the air to perform a heavy slam, which is an attack that players need to avoid that.
  • Executioner Majini: Dragging a great axe, the Executioner can knock players flying with his sweeping strike.
  • Tyrant: A major obstacle players need to deal with when collecting medallions, Tyrant is a relentless juggernaut that never stops chasing down its prey. It can knock players off with its deadly punches and charges from a long distance.
  • Nemesis: With a rocket launcher in one hand, Nemesis can lock onto a player’s location, then launch a rocket after a few seconds to cause massive area damage. Tentacles can spring out of Nemesis’ right palm to bind and drag players in front of it. Nemesis can also make a dizzying and deafening roar.
