Baldur’s Gate 3 Preview

Baldur’s Gate 3

Developer: Larian Studios
Publisher: Larian Studios
Platform: PC
Release Date: 6 October 2020 (Steam Early Access)
Price: $59.99 USD/$89.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Preview

It is no secret the rights to Baldur’s Gate has been the prize many RPG developers have sought since Black Isle Studios folded. With the success of the Divinity Original Sin series, Larian Studios was chosen to be the Baldur’s Gate 3 developers, and it seems like a match made in heaven. While Larian Studios has skipped their preferred fund raising and publicity platform Kickstarter, Baldur’s Gate 3 has just launched on Steam Early Access. The first act of the game is out, alongside six player classes and nine races/subraces.

The story in Act One is solid so far. The main plot moves at a fast pace and offers lots of branching story paths. The five origin characters cannot be selected as the main character at this time. They can all be recruited as party members, so players can get an early look at each character’s personal stories. So far, the origin characters are a diverse lot. Most aren’t shallow good or evil types, rather having a more nuanced personality.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition adapted to Divinity Original Sin 2’s mechanics. It is by no means a perforce 1:1 adaptation, but closer to a reinterpretation or a hybrid. For example, weapon stats are more similar to Divinity Original Sin 2, likely for gameplay balancing. However, Larian Studios makes every effort to remind players constantly they are playing a D&D video game by doing things like displaying weapon damage as dice rolls and using long and short rest mechanics.

In the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons, combat is not the main focus of Baldur’s Gate 3, but rather a tool in the box for players to use as necessary. There are lots of situations where players are outright discouraged from engaging in combat due to overwhelming numbers or higher level enemies. Players almost always have the option to use non-combat skills or stealth solve the problems. While charismatic characters will have an advantage using less violent approaches, the developers have been very good so far about providing other types of characters some non-combat options too.

Combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is strategy heavy and can be punishing at times for the casual player. Like Divinity Original Sin 2, elemental surfaces and their associated combos are powerful tools that players and enemies alike can use. Positioning is incredibly important in the game to prevent damage, increase the chance to hit, and avoid being swarmed by the enemy. The AI is usually an enjoyable challenge for the average gamer, even though only normal difficulty level is available at this time. I noticed the AI struggles with pathing at times with multi-layer maps with holes in the floors, but the issues seem to be minimal.

As with any early access title, balancing is a work in progress for Baldur’s Gate 3. Adapting the D&D 5th edition rules for the Divinity Original Sin 2 engine is a big task, and Larian Studios still has a lot of work to do. I found casters to be underwhelming compared to both physical combat characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 and their spellcasting compatriots in Divinity Original Sin 2. The switch from a cooldown-based system to D&D’s spell slot system hobbles spellcasters endurance, requiring frequent rests between battles to get the most of out of casters. Hybrid melee spellcasters like Shadowheart the cleric are the hardest hit, with her melee abilities nowhere near powerful enough to compensate for her flaccid spells. Ranged rogues on the other hand seem to swing too far in the opposite direction, easily able to dart into range to fire a powerful arrow and then dash to safety all in one turn.

The controls have not changed much since Divinity Original Sin 2. They are very practical and work well for users who only want to use a mouse and those interested in using shortcut keys too. My only issue is how easy it is to accidentally drag abilities off the hot bar. While there is a hot bar lock to prevent accidents, I believe increasing the minimum distance an icon needs to be dragged before it moves out of its slot would be a very practical solution for those looking to keep their bars unlocked.

The graphical experience is solid so far. The art style is realistic fantasy that fits well with the Dungeons & Dragons source books. The humanoid and monster animations are solid. The animal animations on the on the other hand are statuesque and amateur looking. Watching the dog move is absolutely jarring.

The early access build has an incredible amount of audio already. The soundtrack is excellent video game fare. The sound effects are solid. The voice acting is excellent, and there is so much of it. An actor has performed almost every line in the first act, and the narration is very good.

I am impressed with the Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam Early Access build. While it is obvious the game is still in development, the first act is already enjoyable. Larian Studios still needs to do a lot of balancing, but the patches have already come out at a machine gun pace since the Steam Early Access launch. While the full game is not expected to be released for another year at least, I suspect a lot of impatient fans will be starting new games of Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition while they wait. I know I have.

MyTEAM Season 2 brings a variety of new content for ballers to enjoy including:

  • New Triple Threat Challenges in single player mode, with a grand prize of a Diamond Rafer Alston.
  • New Signature Challenges from Vince Carter and over 40 reward cards with NBA 2K21 Next-Gen cover athlete Zion Williamson as the Season’s Level 1 Free Agent card with Luka Doncic, Rui Hachimura, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and more waiting in the wings for players to unlock.
  • New “Win the Weekend” agenda groups every weekend this Season in MyTEAM creates the opportunity to earn XP in all modes and progress through the Seasonal levels. Plus, Limited mode returns featuring Los Angeles Lakers rings inspired by the current champs and more unique and great rewards.

Check out the full Courtside Report written by the NBA 2K dev team for all the details on the latest season below. Remember that all progress players make on the current-gen version of NBA 2K21 will transfer to next-gen coming November 10 for Xbox Series X/S, November 12 for PS5 users.

Welcome to MyTEAM Season 2: Next is Now!

I hope you’re ready, because the upcoming six weeks will add a new way to play, more rewards, some of the most unique promos ever released, and, of course, the launch of NBA 2K21 on next gen consoles.

So why Next is Now? With the ’19-’20 NBA season coming to a close last weekend with the Lakers’ 17th Championship, all 30 teams and their fans are looking ahead to the next in this unprecedented offseason. The league’s young players are poised to take control and free agents are ready to sign. So we are using MyTEAM’s second-ever Season to shine a spotlight on the NBA offseason and the young talent emerging in the NBA.

To lead the way as our Level 40 Grand Prize, is former #1 overall pick, Pink Diamond Blake Griffin! Anyone who has seen what the Season 1 Stephen Curry is capable of on the MyTEAM court will not want to second-guess pursuing Griffin, and trust me, both of these cards stay a level above the rest on next gen as well!

So what can YOU expect in MyTEAM Season 2: Next is Now?

MyTEAM: Season 2 has arrived, bringing new challenges, more rewards, and an all-NEW way to play 3v3. NEXT IS NOW.

TRIPLE THREAT CHALLENGES

A new way to play 3v3 in MyTEAM has arrived, with Triple Threat Challenges! This new single player mode will add Triple Threat to the ever-evolving world of MyTEAM Challenges. Take on some of the best trios of all-time with players in your collection, meet new & multiple Win Conditions, adapt your trio to fit the Challenge Rules, and earn rewards to improve your lineup for every mode in MyTEAM!

To tip-off Season 2, you will find a Spotlight set of 10 Triple Threat Challenge games against almost all of the rewards for this Season. More on those players later!

You can expect Triple Threat Challenges to be the staple of our Spotlight Challenge releases, which will roll out on different days of the week in Season 2. If you complete all of these Challenges, you will earn a player making his MyTEAM debut, Diamond Rafer Alston! Who better than “Skip to My Lou” himself?

WIN THE WEEKEND

Season 1 let us all experience MyTEAM Limited for the first time. The lineups we encountered every weekend were creative to adapt to each new restriction and we cannot wait to see what you come up with as everyone’s MyTEAM collections get deeper. With the grand seasonal prize of Limited requiring 6 Championship Rings, missing one is the definition of HOF Heart Crusher.

We have heard your feedback and in Season 2, the Lakers-inspired rings will be easier to get, showing up after just a few wins in Limited. You will not want to stop playing after getting your ring though, as we are adding more unique and great rewards to improve your lineup each weekend.

Accompanying Limited each weekend will be new “Win the Weekend” Agenda groups. This will be your chance to earn more XP every weekend in MyTEAM, in all modes. Expect to get your reps in each weekend, and doing so will earn you a free award pack from the latest release!

MORE AGENDAS, MORE REWARDS

In Season 1, we had the NBA postseason to inspire Moment Agendas, but it looks like we have at least a few months until they can make a return. Thankfully, the young players of the league made some impressive early-season stat lines that you can recreate in MyTEAM for that all-important XP!

You may have encountered a handful of Original Owner Agendas in Season 1, and they will be returning as bonus XP Agendas in Season 2’s Agenda groups. Meaning if you aren’t the Original Owner of a particular card, you are still very much in the running for that Level 40 Blake Griffin.

As mentioned in the MyTEAM unveiling blog, a new Season brings new rewards. Over 40 new reward cards will be added by the end of the Season, enough to run three full lineups! 12 new players for the Reward Market, three new Exchanges, and for the newly expanded Triple Threat Offline, 450 wins will see your collection pick up a Diamond Victor Oladipo. A new Pink Diamond reward will also be available for completing all of the Next is Now collections this Season, the now two-time champ, J.R. Smith!

Start your Next is Now journey with NBA 2K21 Next Gen cover athlete Zion Williamson as this Season’s Level 1 Free Agent card. Luka Doncic, Rui Hachimura, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and more will unlock as you level up. Like Season 1, each season level reward player is waiting to earn you even more XP.

No matter what mode you play in MyTEAM, there are rewards and XP waiting to be earned by you!

NEW SIGNATURE CHALLENGE

I sincerely hope you all enjoyed cover athlete Damian Lillard’s Signature Challenge to launch NBA 2K21’s MyTEAM. His epic game against the Thunder in the 2019 Playoffs was a moment to behold, and an incredible challenge to undertake in MyTEAM. Thank you Dame!

Up next is a player who I have been waiting to play with, making his NBA 2K21 MyTEAM debut with his own Signature Challenge, Vince Carter! After a career that played games in FOUR different decades, he was able to pick one game for MyTEAM fans to recreate.

On January 8th, 2006, Vince Carter hit a clutch game winning three over the Raptors, from a hand-off assist from Nets teammate Jason Kidd. It was his second game in the away locker room in Toronto, and needless to say, a very important moment in his career.

If you can complete Vince Carter’s Signature Challenge by matching his 42 points and dropping a few threes on the Raptors, then you will earn 15 Tokens and a Hall of Fame slashing badge. Not bad for a single game! Here is the issue though, if Vince Carter is making his debut in NBA 2K21’s MyTEAM, you’ll need to get him somehow to play in his Signature Challenge…. Enter the locker code VINCE-CARTER-GAME-WINNER to pick up the card you will need to complete this challenge. Locker code expires Friday November 27, 07:59:59 AM PT.

NEXT IS NOW

Yes, the Next is Now in MyTEAM! Remember, if you are playing on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, ALL of your MyTEAM progress, lineups, and collection will carry over to the next generation of consoles. So, if you were one of the players who earned Season 1’s Level 40 Grand Prize of Stephen Curry, you already know what he will look like in your lineup in less than a month!

We cannot wait for you to experience MyTEAM on the next generation of consoles and being able to carry over ALL of your progress is an absolute game changer. The Next is literally NOW in MyTEAM. Earn these lineup-changing rewards and get ready for the next gen release of NBA 2K21 in November!

Opmeer and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team leap into the lead after F1 Esports Series round one

Hinwil, 16 October 2020 – Two wins and four overall podiums in the first three races propelled Jarno Opmeer and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team into the lead of the F1 Esports Series as the 2020 campaign began with a bang for the team.

Pitched against the best drivers in the world in the most competitive field in the Series’ history, Opmeer and team-mate, Daniel Bereznay, established themselves as the pair to beat in the first week of the four-event championship, with races in Bahrain, Vietnam and China testing them in a variety of tracks.

A new qualifying format, mirroring that used by Formula One, saw both drivers book a place in Q3: a respectable performance put Daniel in P3, with Jarno in P5 as the top five were separate by less than a tenth of a second.

Team Manager, James Doherty, elected to split the drivers’ strategies for the race, Bereznay starting on the soft compounds as opposed to Opmeer on mediums. As the lights went out, Bereznay executed his strategy to perfection by taking the race lead with AlphaTauri’s Joni Törmälä following close behind. Bereznay maintained his net race lead after pitting for mediums as Opmeer went further into the race before pitting for softs. With the raw speed of both driver and tyre, Opmeer quickly closed in on the leaders and dispatched Törmälä for second, before a position swap between the two Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team drivers. The resulting one-two finish, with Opmeer leading Bereznay, was only the first such result since 2018, when title winners Mercedes locked out the first two places in a race.

The Hanoi circuit in Vietnam was a completely new experience for Formula One, with the Esports Series visiting the country ahead of their real-life counterparts. Qualifying proved to be incredibly competitive as most teams delivered strong laps earlier in the session. Unfortunately, Bereznay fell victim to traffic on all of his qualifying runs and was knocked out in Q1, starting P18. Jarno Opmeer narrowly made his way into Q3, just a tenth clear of the cut off: despite the scare, he went on to produce the team’s first front row start of the season with second place on the timing sheets. A post-session penalty to Renault’s Nicolas Longuet saw the Dutchman promoted to pole position.

Out-of-position Bereznay started on mediums, while Opmeer opted for the soft compound in order to make a break at the front. Opmeer lost a position to David Tonizza of Ferrari at the start, slotting in behind the 2019 champion, as Bereznay made up a few positions after a chaotic opening lap with no shortage of incidents throughout the field. There was plenty of position-swapping in the opening stages, and after the pitstops Opmeer fell briefly to fourth,  quickly reclaiming a podium spot after passing Renault’s Fabrizio Donoso: he then maintained this position until the flag finishing only half a second behind race winner Tonizza. Despite his efforts, Bereznay couldn’t use his softs to full effect due to cars ahead of him having slipstream and DRS, coming home in p15.

Entering the final track of event one, China, both drivers made it comfortably to Q3 for a chance to fight for pole position. At the flag, it was a one-two for Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team, with Jarno  just narrowly edging Daniel, both drivers the only ones to produce a 1:28.1 in the session.

As in Bahrain, the drivers split their strategies: Opmeer, starting from pole on the mediums, had a slow getaway as Bereznay, Marcel Kiefer and Frede Rasmussen, on soft, displaced him. The Red Bull pairing performed an aggressive undercut strategy, Bereznay re-emerging from the pitlane one place behind Kiefer. Jarno Opmeer, on the alternate strategy, continued to deliver a very consistent pace as he went deep into the race and pitted at the end of lap 13, resulting in him returning to the track in a net P6 – with an intimidating task ahead of him. He quickly dispatched two cars within a few corners and closed in on the leading trio. A vital move around the outside Rasmussen at turn four promoted him to third, before a perfectly-timed swap with Daniel placed Jarno within reach of Kiefer. With two laps remaining, the Dutchman passed the Red Bull with the aid of DRS to win his second race of the season.

Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team rounded out the first event as the only team to have both drivers on the podium within the three rounds. This incredible performance placed the team firmly into the lead of the Constructors’ Championship with 98 points, 29 ahead of Red Bull Racing. Jarno Opmeer leads the drivers’ standings with 65 points, only 10 short of a perfect total, with Daniel Bereznay in third with 33 points.

Jamie MacLaurin, Esports Team Principal: “The boys were superb from start to finish. I’m so pleased that all their hard work in the off season is starting to pay off. It’s important to remember, however, that this is a long season, and we must remain focussed on continuing on this rich vein of form.”

James Doherty, Esports Team Manager: “The drivers have put in a sensational performance from moments of extreme difficulty and the pressure of having arguably the most competitive field in virtual racing history. The event couldn’t have gone much better, but we will never underestimate the competition and look to take away the things we can improve even more for the future. I am just very proud of our drivers and team at this time.”

Daniel Bereznay: “I am so pleased for our team after all the hard work and preparation that has gone into this. After suffering a very bad qualifying at Vietnam, I was extremely determined to help the team score big points for the championship and we did this. The work does not stop as we look to continue this momentum into event two.”

Jarno Opmeer: “If you told me I would have two wins and two pole positions after the first event, I wouldn’t have believed you. I would like to thank everyone in the team for making this possible from James, Jamie, Dani, Dominik and Ethan, and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN for their continuous support. The focus quickly shifts to event two as the season is far from over.”

INFECTION MODE RETURNS WITH HALLOWEEN ZOMBIES IN PUBG MOBILE

Beloved PVP playmode for Halloween is resurrected in latest content update for world’s most popular mobile game

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 16, 2020 – Chilling undead creep back into PUBG MOBILE today as the Infection Mode returns to the blockbuster mobile game just in time for Halloween. Infection Mode was first launched in the 0.14.0 content update of PUBG MOBILE in August 2019. From now through Monday, Nov. 9, players can get into this favorite mode again in the action-packed gameplay through a free content update. New in-game themes and costumes are also added as part of PUBG MOBILE’s Halloweeks celebration, coming soon.

In PUBG MOBILE’s Infection Mode, players are split into two teams at the beginning of the match, including Zombies and Defenders. Zombies must defeat all Defenders before the time limit ends the match for victory, but if even one Defender survives, the Defender team earns the Chicken Dinner. While Defenders boast firearms of M416 and AK47 with super Extended Mags, Zombies can only use melee attacks and abilities, which have cooldown times. Once defeated, Defenders will become infected and respawn as Zombies, who can even transform into Fast Zombie, Stealth Zombie, and the Zombie King with huge defense and attack boost. Defenders will also transform into powerful combatants called the Vanquisher when there are only three of them left. Infected killed by Vanquishers cannot be resurrected. These make the gameplay even more interesting and encourage strategy from different side.

In addition to the return of Infection Mode, today’s content update delivers a new wave of specially-themed in-game décor for PUBG MOBILE’s Halloweeks. Zombies wear Halloween masks, with new atmospheric decorations, including jack-o’-lanterns, gravestones and candles. More Halloweeks themed outfits, items and festive content will be revealed soon.

PUBG MOBILE is available to download for free on the App Store and Google Play
