Between October 26 and November 9, World of Tanks is excited to invite tankers to the biggest Halloween event in its 10-year history! Collaborating with Masahiro Ito, the Art Director and Monster Designer behind the Silent Hill universe and Akira Yamaoka the star Composer behind the same nightmarish series – this event will expose players to the sinister story of a scientific experiment gone wrong.

In an all new PVE coop event, players must join together to save the world and uncover the lore behind the town of Mirny-13, using teamwork and tactical cooperation to overcome the armoured manifestations of a mysterious power!

“Inspired by the imaginations of both Ito-san and Yamaoka-san – we’ve let our team run wild for spooky season, with a custom event map and a unique coop mechanics; this PVE event will be unlike any other” says Max Chuvalov, World of Tanks Global Publishing Director. “But beware, those who go it alone will do so at their own peril. My previous works are known for their unsettling atmospheres, chilling narratives and nightmarish beasts, so hopefully World of Tanks players are ready to experience all of these this Halloween!”

Narco Tycoon announced for PC and Switch. The unusual strategy will debut in 2022

Narco Tycoon, a unique game that allows you to build a drug empire, will appear on the market in the first half of 2022. The creators of this economic strategy are promising an extensive system of production and distribution of various goods, a fight for market dominance, a research and development system, and many other features. As announced by the publisher, the game will hit PC and Nintendo Switch, but conversions to other consoles are also possible.

The project is being developed by the independent, Poland-based Type The Name Studio, comprised of people with considerable experience in the industry, gained at such companies as TopWare Interactive, Teyon or Flying Wild Hog. Narco Tycoon will be published by Ultimate Games S.A. As emphasised by the developers, the game is still at an early stage of production, and the first trailer has been released for demonstration purposes only.

Narco Tycoon is an economic strategy game with a top-down 2D view. The developers are focusing on single-player gameplay, which is expected to be very extensive and varied. Players will be able to design and build drug factories from scratch, taking care of the smallest details of the production process. The gameplay will also involve, among others, managing the members of the organisation, taking care of the proper distribution of goods, fighting for market dominance and impunity, as well as research and development works. Your main goal will be to completely take over the drug business in the city.

“We will give the players a wide array of options and a lot of freedom in building their drug empire. We are developing a very extensive production system, with total freedom when it comes to room planning and equipment layout, but achieving a good quality of the product will require them to properly care for, among others, the right temperature, air quality etc. A similar rule will apply to the members of the organisation – each of them will be unique, and properly assigning jobs and tending to the needs of given characters will also be of vital importance. In the same way, for example when fighting for market domination, players will be employing various tactics – some solutions will be based purely on physical force, others will lean towards diplomacy and economy” – says Marcin Steliga, Lead Designer at Type The Name Studio.

As announced by the developers, Narco Tycoon will take place in a large American city and its suburbs. The game’s mood will be serious, but it will also include a dose of black humour.

Narco Tycoon is an unusual strategy that will surprise the players not only with its subject matter, but also with its depth and scope. The gameplay itself will be somewhat similar to games like Prison Architect and RimWorld. When it comes to the mood and references to pop culture, Narco Tycoon will surely appeal to, among others, fans of such series as Breaking Bad and Narcos” – adds Rafał Jelonek, COO at Ultimate Games S.A.

Narco Tycoon – main features:

  • building a drug empire;
  • extensive production and distribution system;
  • fight for market dominance;
  • research and development;
  • many random events.

Narco Tycoon is scheduled to launch on PC (Steam) in the first half of 2022. It will also hit Nintendo Switch, and the publisher does not rule out the possibility that the game will appear on other consoles.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut Switch Review

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut

Developer: WayForward
Publisher: WayForward
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch (Reviewed), Xbox One
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview

Shantae has come a long way, from a humble yet sought after platformer on the Game Boy Color, to one of gaming’s most beloved mascots. Her journey that originally hit the DSiWare years ago is ready to get some love with Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on the Switch on Xbox One. Sure, we have seen this port before, but does this original still have its luster since its last outing, or is this genie out of wishes? Let’s find out.

Story

Risky Boots made a nice second impact in this title, with Shantae setting out to foil her evil plot, with some top friends in tow. This title’s story kind of plays like a Saturday morning cartoon in ways, as while it isn’t too long, it still feels fun and does flesh out the whole “half-genie” aspect of Shantae out.

In fact, it may be the best written tale from the franchise, even though it keeps a more linear feel without side narratives branching in, like the latter titles would do. If you don’t or have not tried Risky’s Revenge, the story is absolutely the selling point for admission and one of the best ways to stick your toe into this absolute delight.

Gameplay

I thought after all of these years with titles like Half Genie Hero and Pirate’s Curse that Risky’s Revenge would feel a bit archaic as a result. Luckily, that was not the case and the game still controls great, with near-perfect platforming. Shantae acts a bit like a Metroidvania title, as players do have a choice of their own direction, with the ability to backtrack to explore and obtain items and abilities that may have once been locked away. The level design is built for this, making exploration fun and enjoyable throughout, with no worries of slowdown or bugs as you trek through Sequin Land.

Shantae also has several animals she can transform into as she gains her footing on powers within this title. From a quick-climbing monkey to a strong, rock-bashing elephant, these additions add a good deal of variation to keep the combat fresh and interesting. The other abilities such as her normal hair whip, fireballs, and so on are just as fun to use, giving incentive to unlocking as many abilities as you can find.

In a way, Risky’s Revenge kind of lived on as a speed-runner’s delight. It is built for a casual session, but a hardcore speed-runner can knock the game out quickly as there is a lot of skill needed to really conquer it quick. It also feels quite natural on the Switch, as this is the first port of the game to another portable platform, so it is good to see this heroine return home in such fine form.

Visuals & Audio

Absolutely delightful. I own Risky’s Revenge for the DSi, PS4, and now the Switch, and I can easily say that the Director’s Cut looks just as good here as it did on the PlayStation. Animations are polished for precise platforming, and the vibrant colors come together to create an absolute treat for the eyes. Maybe I am being a bit bias in that as I do love Shantae, but I can’t see anyone going in here and being disappointed in the art style or personality of this world WayForward build long ago.

The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding. I think it wasn’t as varied as a remember it, but these tunes do hold their age well and make the world pop as you mosey onward. Small sound effects still create a sense of satisfaction as well, as this was one of those titles that had so much effort put into the original project that those little details show both visual and through audio after all of these years.

Overall

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge still holds up well, and despite the fact that we have seen it ported before, its inclusion on the Switch was executed with love and finesse. It may be debatable about the mainstream impact the franchise has made, but as far as being a technical high bar for the industry, this title still has it and in my opinion is the game that current 2D platformer directors should be studying with its level design and light layer of depth. If you need a history lesson or just want to grab the classic all over again, now is your time to dive into the world of this half genie Superstar that is Shantae.

Ben 10: Power Trip Review

Ben 10: Power Trip

Developer: PHL Collective
Publisher: Outright Games
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Xbox One, Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

It has been a while since I have thought much about a licensed game being taboo. With heavy-hitters like Spider-Man and the Arkham franchise, expectations in terms of quality has changed for the better, leaving us to want more of our favorite characters to dip their toe into the industry. Ben 10 has been submerged for years, and while some of those titles were playable, none have truly stood out to give him a proper adaptation. Does Ben 10: Power Trip give us reason to join him this time around, or is it yet another title from the franchise that will be spokesperson of a bargain bin. Let’s find out.

Story

Our story of Ben 10 takes us into what feels like the current version of the cartoon, with Ben and his family enjoying a vacation across Europe. In true form, a magician dubbed Hex appears and unleashes the power of four crystals, stripping Ben of his alien abilities. With the help of a few old and new friends, Ben sets out to conquer the villain and save the world yet again.

Yep, it is about as camp as it sounds, but there was effort put into this narrative and it works just well enough to be a bit memorable overall. The little quirky humor of this series and the general world feel fun to explore through interaction, which makes progression rather easy and entertaining. Could there be more depth, sure. That said, this is Ben 10, and for what is here, this is probably the strongest tale told for this particular namesake via a video game.

Gameplay

This is a bit complicated to speak of as I like so much about the gameplay, yet there is still so much to improve. Power Trip is an open world adventure game of sorts, and honestly feels a lot like the early adventure titles like Spyro and Gex that came out years ago. Little characters basically send you on fetch quests for this or that, enemies pop up on the way, and you finish whatever small goal is put in front of you to progress. It is easy, but maybe a tad too easy as even though this map is a lot bigger than I expected, it still feels like there is something missing to make the world tie together and feel fully involved and fully realized.

Ben’s alien powers feel great most of the time as he is able to freely change between one of what will be eventually ten aliens, and take their powers on through his incredible gadgetry. Some techniques allow Ben to mainly remove obstacles or clear targets quickly, while other abilities like his own scooter just get him from point A to B without much hassle. These transitions are smooth enough and are rather seamless, though the abrupt changes to said aliens when an enemy comes on the screen feels a bit artificial and clunky through execution. The combat isn’t bad either, but is rather basic and no matter which alien I would choose, it was hard to feel satisfied defeating foes.

As for options, one of the best may be the split-screen co-op, which allows for a second player to become Kevin 11, who is Ben’s ally and rival. It’s a fun addition that was pleasant to see, and those with kids will love the old co-op modes from the past to tie in here. I do think there could have been a bit more put into this as well, but when you play Power Trip you will realize that it is certainly not lacking compared to most licensed fare, and is actually one of the better built titles from adapting something form Cartoon Network to hit a console overall. There really is care shown here, and I wouldn’t mind seeing this continue to improve.

Visuals & Audio

I do love a colorful game, and the palette in Ben 10: Power Trip is pleasing on the eyes. It is a shame there isn’t a lot of detail in the environments, but older players like myself will at least feel a bit nostalgic for when our textures and environments were a little more basic. Animations in the game are mostly fine, but I do with there was more movement overall in the backgrounds, and combat animations are just plain dull when it comes to the attacks and other fighting far.

The sound is a bit of a mixed bag. The “soundtrack” is a bit average and forgettable, and while I didn’t expect art, I did think a popular cartoon could still lay down some decent tunes but that was just not the case for Power Trip. The voice acting on the other hand is excellent, adding a ton of personality and life into the experience, I just wish we could have had more as most dialogue sequences are simple text with a grunt or two. That may be fine is other large games that are doing a lot, but with visuals that are a bit light and less detailed, we could have seen more makeup here on that exclusion.

Overall

Ben 10: Power Trip is honestly a fun, innocent game that shows the developers at least cared enough to create something special. There are plenty of places it could be better, but for what it does right, I am sure it is going to please fans who already feel involved in the Universe as it is definitely true to its own material. Fan or not, there is nothing wrong with jumping into this Ben 10 adventure, as it is easily the largest and most realized experience to date for Cartoon Network’s long time namesake.
