ABOUT THE RIFTBREAKER™

As Captain Ashley S. Nowak, “the Riftbreaker,” you enter a one-way portal to Galatea 37, a distant planet at the far reaches of the Milky Way. Your purpose is to build and develop a base that will allow travel to and from Earth for further colonization. Ashley’s Mecha-Suit, which she calls “Mr. Riggs,” can withstand the harshest environmental conditions and has a full range of equipment for base construction, resource extraction, specimen gathering, and of course – combat. It is also capable of traveling through rifts that connect space across vast distances.

THE RIFTBREAKER™  MAIN FEATURES

  • BASE BUILDING – Your task is to construct a two-way rift connected to Earth. This will be a very complex undertaking requiring enormous amounts of energy. Simple solar collectors and a few tons of steel will not be enough. You will need to build up an intricate chain of mines, refineries, power plants, and research facilities to complete this mission.
  • EXPLORATION – Galatea 37 is an unknown planet in the Sycorax belt of the Milky Way galaxy. Remote surveys have detected that it is inhabitable and perfect for colonization. The planet is full of rare minerals and substances that can be found scattered across the globe. Various biomes will surprise you with unknown fauna and flora, along with harsh weather conditions. Construct local outposts in resource-rich areas to transport the required material using rift technology.
  • DEFENSE – Your presence on this planet will not go unnoticed! As you build up your industry and disrupt the natural order, the planet will start to see you as a threat. Build up your defenses – construct walls, barriers, and defense towers as the attacks get stronger with every passing day. You will face thousands of hostile creatures trying to eliminate your presence.
  • HACK, SLASH, SHOOT – Mr. Riggs can be equipped with powerful weapons and abilities that will allow you to take on the largest of beasts. You will need to be ready to face lots of hostile alien creatures as you explore the planet.
  • GATHER SAMPLES AND STRANGE ARTIFACTS – Fallen beasts will drop valuable research specimens as well as rare resources. Use everything you can gather to research and craft new technologies, buildings, weapons, and equipment. You can also scout the terrain using your sensors and dig for treasure buried underground.
  • RESEARCH – Use your gathered samples to research new technologies that will help you build up your base, improve your defenses, develop new blueprints for your Mecha-Suit, or improve existing technologies.
  • CRAFT – Mr. Riggs is fully customizable and upgradable. Use the blueprints that you’ve researched to craft new parts and weapons. Utilizing better materials in the crafting process will result in gear with improved properties. Each crafted item has unique properties.
  • INTERACTIVE STREAMING – The Riftbreaker™ has built-in integration with all the most popular streaming services. The stream’s audience can actively participate in the game through multiple options, such as voting to send waves of new enemies, donating resources, or spawning environmental disasters like a tornado.
  • THE SCHMETTERLING ENGINE – This game is built using the latest iteration of EXOR Studios’ in-house developed Schmetterling 2.0 engine, which was previously used to create X-Morph: Defense and Zombie Driver™. We pride ourselves in delivering fluid gameplay and fully utilizing the capacity of your hardware: uncapped frame rates, support for widescreen monitors, customizable controls, and more.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends Review

Hood: Outlaws & Legends

Video Review

Overview

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a stealth based PvPvE title from English developers Sumo Digital. The game pits two teams of four in a grand Robin Hood style heist to rob the Sheriff of his treasure. However, an opposing team of thieves adds an extra layer of complication to the heist.

Story

Hood: Outlaws & Legends does not have much of a story. The game is loosely inspired by old English folklore. Those who are familiar with the folklore may recognize some vague elements, but the game’s multiplayer nature doesn’t provide much chance for narrative.

Gameplay

Hood: Outlaws & Legends really emphasizes PvP part of the equation. Unfortunately, the objectives remain the same between each map: pickpocket the key from the sheriff, open the vault, steal the treasure chest, and extract the chest. While teams can earn bonus money by cranking the chest to certain intervals, it’s the team who cranks the chest to the final point that wins the game. At its core, the game is a mixture of capture the flag and domination game modes with a splash of stealth.

The game offers four classes. Robin and Marianne are the two ranged classes with Robin being the pure range class while Marianne being more skilled at close quarter assassinations. John and Tooke are the melee characters. John is a straightforward melee brawler, while Tooke mixes mid-range combat and support abilities. The class balance is decent. All the basic roles are covered, and special abilities are unique enough to distinguish the classes. There is also enough room for another one or two classes to be added later without feeling too repetitive.

While the game really tries to sell itself on the stealth gameplay, the mechanics are actually light and approachable. Guards are not too deadly or smart. Additionally, players can easily lose their pursuers with a short run or kill off the guards and move on. While the traditional assassination move is a staple in the game, the balance between range and movement speed is still a work in progress. Characters can easily outwalk sneak speeds, making it difficult to get the jump on hostile players unless they are distracted by combat.

Combat is decent. Games often devolve into a full-blown brawl at the end of the game as the chest is being cranked at the extraction point.  Melee character attacks are telegraphed, allowing plenty of time to block and dodge incoming damage. Stamina is limited, so players are strongly discouraged from button mashing. The biggest issue is assassinations grants immunity to damage, allowing players to jump from the bushes and take out a character in the midst of combat. There’s no way to save teammates, which is absolutely infuriating when it’s happening right in front of the player. If it wasn’t for the assassination immunity, combat would hit a good balance between skill and accessibility

The last few minutes of Hood: Outlaws & Legends is game at it’s best. The early to mid game is a dull, if not pedestrian light stealth game, but the end is a tense all out brawl where players are balancing strategic decisions to capture respawn points, battle it out for control of the winch, or tie up characters by having them crank the winch. Consider a team only needs to be the one cranking the last increment of the winch, the end leads for some epic last-minute comebacks.

The quality-of-life features are poor overall. There is no full-sized map like the one found on the respawn screen, which makes it difficult for new players to figure out where to go until they memorize the maps. While crossplay does drive up the available player pool, matchmaking is brutal. Partial lobbies don’t appear to be prioritized, and it’s often easier to just find a new lobby. The game doesn’t seem to balance skill levels very well before the match, which can often lead to a team stacked with veteran players who all trickled into the game on their own. While the developers say the matchmaking system is designed to focus on win/loss ratio and number of matches played, the matchmaking system does not seem to give enough weight to player experience. This is especially important since learning combat and all the map layouts without a proper in-game map takes some time. Finally, certain gameplay keys can’t be rebound on the PC. The push to talk is permanently bound to Y, which is infuriating for ESDF and WASD users alike.

The game is also quite glitchy at release. The mute player function is rarely functional at best. Visual glitches occur with some regularity, with dead characters standing upright being the most common. Gameplay issues are also widespread. For example, guards in combat can sometimes get stuck in some sort of alerted limbo state, unable to move. While Sumo Digital says the game is hosted on dedicated serves, the game is often plagued with lag issues even when the server is assigned to my region.

Visuals

Hood: Outlaws & Legends has a decent visual style. The UI has a nice English druidic flair. While the world is a pretty bog standard realistic medieval setting, the character design is a solid twist on the classic Disney image of Robin Hood. Character silhouettes are not visually distinct though. At most, players can figure out if an enemy player is melee or ranged with a quick glance. I generally prefer games that can convey such important information visually as it helps players understand their situation in a quick and easy way.

Audio

The audio experience is okay. There isn’t too much of a soundtrack due to the stealth mechanics. The voice acting is decent, and the sound effects are enjoyable.

Overall

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a flawed game. While the bugs, balancing, and quality of life issues may be fixed in the long term, the game’s boring to early mid game and half-baked stealth gameplay really dampens the experience. The final battle is always a tense and enjoyable event, but it’s just not enough to overcome the hump to recommend to everyone.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Review

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Release Date: 14 May 2021
Price: $99,95 AUD – Available Here $59,99 USD – Available Here

Overview

It’s not easy to start writing about a game that already has an established fanbase before the release. But how does that happen? Well, for one, the game can be a sequel or a part of the series with an overarching story and gameplay elements. So we already know what to expect there. And it can also be a remaster or a remake, like in this case. But even if you’re not a fan of these games or this genre or this developer or this publisher, you must have heard of the Mass Effect by now. There is a reason why all the similar games that followed were afraid to use the term “the next Mass Effect” or “the new Mass Effect. No one has replicated it successfully. Some were inspired by it but that’s where all the connection would end. This edition is as monumental as the vast emptiness of space in the game. A trilogy packaged into one and while I’m anxious to from what side to take the first bite, I have to start eventually. So, first things first…

Story

The game takes place in the fictional version of the Milky Way galaxy. In 2148, humans discover an alien outpost on Mars and learn later that Charon (one of the five moons orbiting around Pluto) is an alien artifact known as a “mass relay” that enables faster-than-light travel. After using it, humanity pretty soon comes in contact with other alien species, some far more advanced than us. To a surprise of no one, humanity’s first encounter with other species results in a First Contact War (after all, it’s what we do best), prompting The Council to intervene. The Council is a ruling body of the galaxy, tasked with maintaining peace and serving as a mediator between most of the alien species in our galaxy. They succeed in their task, brokering the peace and ending the First Contact War and soon enough things return to normal. Humanity continues exploring space using the mass relay travel system and colonizing other (uninhabited) planets. Our protagonist is Commander Shepard (race and gender is always determined by you during character creation) who has been recently named the first human SPECTRE (SPECial Tactics and REconnaissance). It’s a term for elite agents with absolute authority and impunity. Kinda like 007 in space. Our task is to investigate a new Prothean artifact (Protheans are believed to be the progenitor race for all species) and after coming into contact with it, Shephard was a vision of war and death across the galaxy. Soon enough, we learn that the artifact is a creation of an artificial lifeform called The Reapers, and every 50,000 years The Reaper comb through the galaxy and eliminate the most advanced species at that point, leaving the younger species to advance and thrive until the next cycle as to prevent constant war and chaos. The latest cycle of elimination is about to happen and we (along with Commander Shephard and his team) try to break the cycle and……..survive. While there might be some nihilistic order and logic in the grand scheme of Reapers’ plan, no one wants to be told they just have to lie down, die, and accept their fate in the process. Our plan and the hope might be futile but maybe there is a way. Who knows.

Gameplay

Whew, what a doozy of a story. You might like it or not, but it’s not a short one by any means. And for me, the story of the trilogy was always a selling point and what drew me into the game. The lore, the character interactions, the world-building, everything. Unfortunately, the same attention to detail was never given to the gameplay. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just simplistic and hardly detailed. You won’t need to spend much time figuring it out and mastering it. At the core of it, the gameplay through all three games follows the basic cover shooter formula. You’re helped with the use of some biotic skills (let’s just call it space magic) where you can stun enemies, make them float in the air, warp to them, hit them, and generally make their intent of killing you way less efficient. The tools of the trade at your disposal consist of the various arsenal of guns, assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles. Throw in some grenades for good measure and that’s pretty much it. In the first game, the armor you find is stat dependant and later on, it’s just visual. After accumulating enough experience points (from killing enemies, exploring the world, and finishing side objectives), you level up and you’re awarded some stat points. You can assign them to certain weapon proficiency, learn new biotic skills, improve health and unlock various weapon skills. You always play as Commander Shephard, aided by the trusty AI of your companions. They’re usually pretty reliable and don’t suffer from the usual AI companion flaws like in some other games. They don’t get stuck, don’t run into the walls and they will have your back when things get serious.

Visuals

And finally, we get to the meaty part of the cake. Ugh, that sounds horrible actually. What about the creamy filling of the cake? Yeah, let’s go with that. Anyway, the remastering. You might assume that most of it apply to the visual and you would be right. Mostly. The first Mass Effect in this remaster trilogy got some changes in the terms of UI placement, improved UI design, and tweaks of the cover system. And of course, the visual improvements across the board. Depending on how recently you played the original games, the first thing you’ll notice in the first game is the better armor textures, better character textures, and better mako handling (you know that vehicle that gave you a lot of headache flipping over the hills and rolling over every 2 seconds). On top of that, the weapon accuracy has been improved across all three games, all enemies now take headshot damage and all weapons can be used by any class without penalty. The trilogy comes with a photo mode, which is just common sense now, isn’t it? Considering all the planets with different biomes that we’ll visit with our mako, it would be a shame to not put it in the game now. The more you go through the games, the easier it is to spot the improvements. Mass Effect 2 now looks like a game that came out merely a few years ago, with polished environments and better lightning. The last game also received a well-needed facelift, considering how average looked (and sometimes) worse compared to Mass Effect 2. We only had to wait 9 years for it to get better.

Audio

This is a section of the game where if you told me that the audio received no improvements, I honestly wouldn’t mind. The music in general throughout all three games was amazing as it was engaging. But this time audio is improved nonetheless and we get the option to skip that long elevator chatter if we want to. Back then we didn’t have those things called SSD, remember? The weapon sounds now also have more variety and you can actually hear the difference between various assault rifles and shotguns. In the end, we can say that it looks good and that it sounds good as well. The ambient sounds that play while I explore the Citadel now have a newfound purpose as notification sounds in my smartphone.

Overall

If this is your first encounter with Mass Effect games (and if so, have you been living under a rock this whole time?) then this trilogy is an opportunity of a lifetime for you. You also get a plethora of downloadable content throughout all three games that you had to purchase separately before. No preorder bonuses, no preorder DLC (I’m looking at you, “From Ashes”), and no exclusive costumes. This has all been properly and seamlessly integrated into main games. If you really take your time, we are probably talking about a three-digit number if you want to explore all the content that Mass Effect Legendary Edition has to offer. Sure, you might be arriving late for the party, but as they say, it’s better late than never.

Only the Strongest Will Survive, Rust Console Edition Out Now on PS4 and Xbox One

Brave the elements and enemies for the first time on console

Middlesbrough, United Kingdom – May 21, 2021 – Grab the nearest rock and hope for the best, developer and publisher Double Eleven today released Rust Console Edition for Xbox One and PS4. Today’s release marks the first time that the massively popular survival title Rust is available on any platform outside of PC.

Today’s launch was accompanied by a trailer that showcases the brutal action that console players will now get the chance to dive into, if they think they can handle it:

Based on the popular PC version, Rust Console Edition is designed as a separate experience from its PC counterpart, optimized specifically for console players but features crossplay between the Xbox and PlayStation platforms.

In Rust, players will wake up alone on a mysterious post-apocalyptic island littered with dilapidated industrial monuments and probing scientists. Featuring up to 100 other players it’s up to you to figure out how to keep yourself alive in a world where everything wants you dead.

Conquer thirst and hunger, battle the elements, create clothing and stay safe against hostile forces including other players, scientists, bears, wolves or even succumb to fire, drowning or radiation poisoning. A game without rules, Rust doesn’t tell its inhabitants what to do. Players are free to be deceptive and aggressive with intense player vs. player combat, raiding and looting, but there is potentially even more to be earned with a team of friendly players by your side. In the struggle for survival and supremacy, players can build tiny cabins in the woods to huge scrap metal fortresses in an attempt to stay safe, as well as craft a variety of weapons, bombs and traps.

Rust is not for the faint of heart: the game boasts a steep learning curve and a huge, killer community of players. Befriend them, kill them – the choice is yours. Players will start out alone with nothing but a rock and a torch, finding and learning blueprints to make new and higher-tier weapons, armour and defenses, building a growing arsenal to give you and your friends chances of survival. Rust will throw a barrage of challenges at you but players can fight back with craftable weapons starting with a rock in your hands, to a spear or bow, through to heavier artillery like assault rifles and rocket launchers.
