From a Living Desert to a Volcano’s Peak: Exploring Forza Horizon 5’s Biomes and Seasons

From a Living Desert to a Volcano’s Peak: Exploring Forza Horizon 5’s Biomes and Seasons

by Will Tuttle, Xbox Wire Editor in Chief

While there’s no denying that flashy supercars and built-for-fun off-road vehicles are the stars of the show in the Forza Horizon series, it’s the widely varied, based-on-real-life environments that really make the games shine. Whether it’s kicking up dust while blasting across the Australian Outback in Forza Horizon 3 or leaving a swirling trail of leaves through the English countryside on a crisp autumn day in Forza Horizon 4, we’ve all got great memories of exploring the vibrant worlds created by the developers at Playground Games. With Forza Horizon 5, the team has their sights set on the most diverse locale yet: Mexico.

“We knew from the beginning that we wanted this to be the biggest Forza Horizon yet. However, if we wanted to be the biggest, then we felt we also needed to offer the most diversity and contrast as well,” says Mike Brown, Creative Director of Forza Horizon at Playground Games. “Mexico is almost like the whole world in one country: snowy peaks, tropical jungles, epic canyons, beautiful beaches, ancient architecture, and modern cities. When you add on Mexico’s incredible culture – the music, the art, the history, the people – there is no more exciting location for the Horizon Festival.”

The Playground Games team has broken down Forza Horizon 5’s Mexico into 11 distinct and unique biomes, each of which was painstakingly researched and recreated by the team. “Our team collects reference from the location and creates concept images that highlight the beauty and unique detail for each biome. We employ techniques such as photogrammetry to recreate the environment with precision accuracy,” says Don Arceta, Art Director for Forza Horizon 5 at Playground Games. “And we bring the beauty of the world in, through the sights and sounds you’ll find throughout every area. The goal of the artistic process is to make it feel like you’re really there.”

Seasons will also be returning to Forza Horizon 5, adding a new layer of diversity and complexity to the experience than previous Forza Horizon games. What’s more, each of the 11 unique biomes will transition though the seasons differently. As an example, spring means the rainy season in the jungles and farmland of Mexico, while summer could bring intense tropical thunderstorms along the coasts. Forza Horizon 5 seasons ensure Mexico is constantly evolving, encouraging players to explore the world in full each time the seasons change.

But what about the biomes themselves? Spread out over a map that’s about one-and-a-half times the size of Forza Horizon 4’s, the 11 biomes represent the most diverse map a Forza Horizon game has ever delivered. Let’s take a closer look:

Canyon

You might recognize this as the biome that was shown in the Forza Horizon 5 reveal trailer in June. It’s filled with rock formations patterned with unique striations, many of which erode into hoodoos that are only found in the canyon. Fun fact: each of the biomes have unique audio and the canyon has more echoes than any of the others.

Tropical Coast

This might be what you think of when you imagine a tropical Mexican vacation. Filled with palm trees, seagulls, white sand beaches and calm waters, it feels a lot like a postcard come to life. At least that’s the case until you reach storm season, which completely changes how you need to navigate it. Watch out for flying palm trees!

Farmland

Unlike the flatter or drier farmland found in some of the previous Forza Horizon games, these rolling hills are filled with lush vegetation, fruit-bearing trees, and wide, shallow rivers. You’ll have plenty of fences to smash through and picturesque homesteads to explore while you’re cruising through here.

Arid Hills

As you might suspect given the name, this biome is full of dry grasses on rolling hills and plains, providing plenty of open spaces to drive across if you feel like off-roading. One of the coolest features in this biome is a lake that actually dries up in the winter season, opening up shortcuts via fast passages and secret areas.

Jungle

Filled with lush, dense vegetation and towering trees that let beautiful rays of sun through the canopy, this biome also sports some impressive waterfalls and winding rivers. There are also a number of hidden temples in this area, all of which are based on real locations in Mexico.

Living Desert

In a first for the Forza Horizon series, Forza Horizon 5 features a cactus desert that’s full of towering saguaros. There are also a number of rock formations and rock piles that are unique to the area. As the name implies, it’s full of life and features plenty of flowers and wildlife.

Rocky Coast

While the tropical coast features lots of trees and vegetation, this one has a completely different vibe. Since there aren’t many trees, you’ll get a full view of the ocean and some excellent views of the sun setting at the end of the day. As a bonus to all you golfers out there, you can even take a spin around (read: through) a golf course.

Sand Desert

Full of towering sand dunes, this biome is perfect for cruising around in a buggy and carving into the sand. If you don’t feel like getting sand between your toes, many of the roads in this area feature long straightaways so there are plenty of opportunities to see how fast your favourite ride really goes.

Swamp

Although a swamp might not sound like the best place for a race, this biome’s shallow waters are a great place for it.   The swamp also features a lot of mangrove trees that sport very thick, interconnected roots. You can actually smash through these during races, changing the route depending on whether or not your car can handle it.

Urban City of Guanajuato

Like a number of cities in Mexico, there’s a good deal of amazing architecture and vibrant colours everywhere you look. Unlike a lot of cities, however, it features a lot of rolling hills and tunnels, making for some really fun race routes. As with the Canyon, you’ll hear plenty of echoes bouncing around the city’s tight roadways.

Volcano

In another first for the Forza Horizon series, this massive mountain is situated right next to the Living Desert. It’s a very high-altitude volcano, so driving to the top is a unique experience that rewards players by seeing way off into the horizon. This is also the only place in the game that you’ll encounter snow, so be sure to pack an extra jacket.

We hope you enjoyed this in-depth look at the diverse biomes you’ll encounter in Forza Horizon 5. This is the largest, most diverse open world ever in a Forza Horizon game, with a vibrant, ever-evolving landscape and limitless driving action in hundreds of the world’s greatest cars.

You can explore Mexico beginning on November 9, when Forza Horizon 5 releases for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC on Windows and Steam, and Xbox Game Pass including console and PC.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s second expansion, The Siege of Paris, will release on August 13. Set in Francia, this new adventure will set Eivor on a dangerous path full of gripping questlines across the Frankish countryside, towards one of the most infamous conquest battles in Viking history. Players will get their hands on new weapons, abilities, gear, and skills to take on new enemy types. The Siege of Paris will also mark the return of Infiltration Missions, directly inherited from long-time, fan-favorite Black Box Missions. Here, players will have the liberty to choose the best way to eliminate their designated target. The Siege of Paris will be available for all Season Pass** owners or as a separate purchase for $39.95 AUD ($49.95 NZD) by all owners of the main game.

From today, they can discover “Hásæti”, the first track of the album composed by Stephanie Economou. With this song, she wanted to evoke a sense of spirituality and depth in the music and vocals felt like the right avenue to explore. The lyrics are in Old Norse, with “Hásæti” translating to “Seat of Honor.” To listen the single below:

Starting Thursday, July 29, players can celebrate Summer in the time limited Sigrblot Festival, a traditional Viking festival celebrating the start of the Raiding season. Until August 19, various festive activities will be available in the Ravensthorpe settlement around the traditional bonfire, including:

  • Flyting, Fight Tournament, and Dice Game mini-games
  • Three new quests available
  • Exclusive rewards including settlement decorations, customization items, and weapons. Notably, the one-handed sword Skrofnung can be acquired with Sigrblot tokens in the festival shop for a limited time before the festival ends

To experience the Sigrblot Festival, players must reach England and complete one of the first narrative arcs – either Grantebridgescire or Ledecestrescire – and have their settlement reach Level 2.

An additional update is planned for later this season and will bring a new River Raids map pack, with destinations scattered along the rivers of Francia and Ireland. With development led by Ubisoft Montreal**, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers players the captivating experience of playing as Eivor, a legendary Viking warrior, driven from Norway by endless wars and dwindling resources in ninth century AD. Players can relive the ruthless fighting style of Viking warriors with a revamped dual-wielding combat system and experience new gameplay features such as raids, assaults, and the settlement, as well as a revamped progression and gear upgrade system. Political alliances, combat decisions and dialogue choices can influence the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, so players must choose wisely to protect their clan’s home and their future.

Zombies, demons, and unimaginable monstrosities lie in wait on the moons of Jupiter – survival is NOT

Jupiter Hell is a classic, turn-based roguelike set in a 90s flavored sci-fi universe. Set on the moons of Jupiter, this spiritual successor to classic DRL (originally known as Doom, the Roguelike) pits a lone space marine against overwhelming demonic forces. Rip and tear zombies, demons, and unmentionable monstrosities, using classic weaponry such as shotguns, chainguns, railguns, and the trusty chainsaw. All to the shine of CRT monitors and the tune of heavy metal.

Steam Store Page

In Jupiter Hell, traditional roguelike turn-based gameplay meets with modern shooter sensibilities. Controls are immediate and accessible while retaining the back-end depth of a turn-based RPG. You can customize your character with new weapons, items, and abilities gained as you progress through a permadeath-prone hell. Blast through procedurally-generated civilian sectors, military space bases and mining colonies on the violent moons of Jupiter. Like every roguelike worth its salt, you’ll find new ways to experience familiar settings in every playthrough.

Samurai Warriors 5 Review

Samurai Warriors 5

Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Platforms:PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4 (Reviewed), Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 – Available Here, $89.95 – Available Here

Overview

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. That type of mindset has been behind most of the long running Warriors franchise, which has delivered top notch hack and slash gameplay for years to a loyal fanbase. Samurai Warriors 5 is the latest installment, bringing us back to the basics while adding some new features to keep things fresh. Does this sequel deliver, or is the previous installment still the pinnacle of this series? Let’s find out.

Story

Musou Mode is basically the heartbeat of Samurai Warriors 5, where the narrative leads the experience. Players will find a comfortable retread of the Sengoku period, seeing the perspectives of a young Nobunaga and Mitsuhide, where we get a better look at how the two met and how it would affect their motives later on. It is a rather compelling plot at work here, but one that still doesn’t feel as fleshed out as it could be due to the execution. Sure, the story is enjoyable, but I feel like even though everything is “fresh”, it kind of seems we are still going over the same type of plot we have seen so many times before. I get it, this theme is what makes Samurai Warriors true to its namesake, but I do think it is time to concentrate on these characters in terms of writing and heart so our two protagonists can be a little more than one-dimensional faces. Again, there is still a lot to enjoy and the plot is definitely accessible to newcomers and seasoned fans alike – but I have always thought Samurai Warriors was always one pen stroke away from being brilliant, and that “almost” feeling kind of left me wanting to see a bit more depth and excitement to match the satisfying gameplay within.

Gameplay

If you want a great Warriors game that is familiar, that is exactly what you will be getting in this installment as for the most part, everything feels relatively the same. Players traverse a map, capture checkpoints, defeat bosses, and conquer land as they progress forward, while having to take out thousands of enemies at once. Yep, it is Samurai Warriors, but there are some new techniques to play with that do mix things up in a minor way. Hyper Attacks pull together all surrounding foes where you can round up a massive combo quickly, making quick work of crowds.

Racking up kills also fill your Ultimate gauge, where you can let out one of four special attacks at a cost, which all have a very powerful attack, making it useful against tougher soldiers. These skills can also boost your stats temporarily, putting the battle more in your favor for short bursts. Yep, not a lot has changed outside of minor additions, and while these extras are nice to see, they don’t really give Samurai Warriors 5 its own distinct flavor as it all still feels relatively like prior installments. That isn’t a bad thing as there is more of what fans like here, but those looking to see a facelift may be disappointed that this follow-up mainly differs in looks and doesn’t really do much to stand out.

Citadel mode acts as your mission mode of sorts, allowing players to take on mini-quests in order to upgrade inventory, buildings, and even horses. Summoning troops on the fly is a lot of fun, and the attention to detail in this mode shows with how much content is here. The use of summons and customization included will add new layers of strategy to the battlefield for those who may be tiring of the standard fare, and that made Citadel my main place of play during my time with the game. There is something really therapeutic still about slashing through enemies in short sessions and Citadel mode is made for that, delivering nice rewards for progression that completionists will love.

Visuals

This was something I was rather on the fence about during my entire time with Samurai Warriors 5. The visuals have changed, but not in any way major. Instead of standard models, characters now have a cel shaded like appearance. Things look fine and I am guessing the change keeps gameplay more fluid and consistent, but after 4 really shined in terms of visuals, it was kind of a letdown to see a sequel take a downgrade in graphics. Sure, the game looks fine, but it feels more dated now, as even its predecessor seemed to be more polished and stunning, while 5 just struck me as average based on that odd design choice.

Audio

The audio is fine, with Japanese voice actors doing a great job at bringing alive their characters. The soundtrack is familiar and sets the Sengoku theme well enough, but the sound effects do seem a bit lackluster. In a hack and slash game from any developer, I would expect more satisfying attack sounds to compliment the experience. Instead, I questioned if my moves were even hitting at times as there is a lot of silence, which is something this veteran franchise should be doing a lot better with. You will still get the same joy of cutting down foes, but without as much crunch this time around.

Overall

Samurai Warriors 5 is a fine sequel that delivers exactly what any Warriors fan would want. More slicing and dicing, with no major changes to drive off its loyal fan base. I think asking for anything more at this point would be silly, but after 4, I do think Samurai Warriors 5 could have been better than its predecessor easily with more features and refinement. This sequel’s biggest issue is that 4 other titles came before it, and it doesn’t have as much content as prior titles at launch. Loyalists, this is still more of what you love and everything still plays well, so enjoy your latest time sink as it may not be better, but there is still a lot return to in the 5th installment.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Review

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platforms: Switch, PlayStation 4 (Previewed), PC
Release Date: July 27, 2021
Price: $39.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Ace Attorney series and what better way to celebrate than to bring two of the most recent games to modern day consoles in one package. While in Japan the combination of The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve is a nice little improvement, for those of us in the West, this is a brand new package loaded with content. Despite being released in 2015 and 2017 respectively, neither of these titles saw any chance of a Western release for an unknown number of reasons but now these two long hoped for games are debuting in the West together. Featuring a brand new cast set in an all new era, is The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles worth your time?

Story

It is the turn of the 19th century and Japan has just begun opening itself up to the rest of the world, beginning with diplomatic relations between the country and Great Britain. This has led to a cultural boom in Japan that has even reached the justice system, allowing a number of fresh new ideas into the courtroom. Here players find Ryunosuke Naruhodo, his best friend and freshly trained lawyer Kazuma Asoki, and his judicial assistant Susato Mikitoba tackling their first murder case in what ends up being something of a first experience for many involved. Following this case the group leaves for Great Britain, setting sail to the country in an effort to study law on a global scale and seeing the true power of the British legal system.

Shortly the group finds themselves meeting a famous eccentric face in the form of the great detective, Herlock Sholmes and eventually his young partner, inventor and writer Iris Wilson. The pair quickly find themselves integrated as one of the most endearing and frequent members of the eccentric cast of characters that Naruhodo meets on his journey through the London courts, with Herlock’s antics being one of the best inclusions to the game both storywise and mechanically. As is true with any Ace Attorney game, these strange characters are a tried and true signature for the series and thanks to the way the story is actually written here, players will be spending quite a bit of time with many returning faces across different events.

While this collection not only serves as a way to bring these two games over in one package, it also serves to bring them together as one. Unlike other entries in the Ace Attorney series that wrap up their individual stories at the end, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles tells a consistent story throughout both games with the second entry picking up shortly after the events of the first. This not only gives the writers more chances to flesh out the storyline by building it up over the course of two games and multiple cases but gives the eccentric cast a chance to not only grow on the player but really shine as a result.

That isn’t to say that each case on its own isn’t strong enough to hold up on its own. Throughout the game cases constantly felt like they were throwing new twists and mysteries that Naruhodo needs to solve to secure a Not Guilty verdict, It is still certainly possible to find yourself ahead of the game in a handful of cases, waiting for the characters to catch up to what the player has already figured out, but thanks to the writing and limitations of the era often at play in the courtroom, the mysteries that players need to solve end up being far more complicated at times than they seem to be, a few already standing out as being some of the best in the entire series as a result.

Gameplay

For the most part, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles plays similar to other entries in the series as players will once again find themselves tasked with defending their client from a crime they didn’t commit using evidence gathered both inside and outside the courtroom, cross-examining witnesses by pressing their statements and presenting evidence when they are caught in a lie, and uncovering the truth behind what really happened. This is done through two distinctly separate areas; the courtroom and exploration where players move to different locations, talking to relevant witnesses and detectives, and gathering evidence that may help their case.

The biggest changes come from the fact that players are now dealing with Great Britain’s legal system as well as a certain great detective whose deductions are not only elaborate and flashy, but also a bit off the mark as well. Often players will be tasked with examining a location or talking with someone and Herlock Sholmes will join them, coming up with a deduction as to what he thinks may have happened and players will need to correct him in the “Dance of Deduction” to point him in the right direction. These moments often give players the most freedom to examine a scene and, while not overly difficult, have some fun moments of trying to solve what a witness might actually be trying to hide by their actions.

The other and most notable differences appear in the courtroom. Whereas players used to only have to deal with one witness at a time, now multiple witnesses can take the stand at the same time, spreading a witness statement across multiple people. These not only allow the story to move at a more fluid pace but also allow for a slightly more intricate level of cross-examination as well. Occasionally when one witness is pressed about their statement, another one will begin reacting to what they are hearing, allowing the focus to be shifted towards that witness and reveal something new and turn the tides on the potential liar.

Another new element that is only featured in the British courts is the fact that there is actually a jury now and not just the judge passing a verdict. Every case will feature six jurors, who are also incredibly eccentric, that sit in on the trial and have their own reactions and statements made regarding the events unfolding in front of them as Naruhodo and the prosecutor butt heads in the courtroom. At any point in the trial the jurors can interrupt proceedings and cast their vote as to either Not Guilty or Guilty and, should all six vote Guilty, players will be given one final chance to change their minds. “Summation Examination” as it is called allows the player to directly question the jury about their choice and try to pit them either against one another or show evidence against their claims and if four manage to shift their votes to Not Guilty, the trial will resume. This level of detail when it comes to court cases and interactions with not only the setting itself but the people helps make these cases really stand out as being exceptional.

Visuals & Audio

Considering both games included in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles originally released on the Nintendo 3DS they have seen some solid improvements now on the PlayStation 4. Character models are fantastic looking and feature a wide array of emotions ranging from confident to completely losing their minds all set to gorgeous looking backgrounds. There are even some animated cutscenes mixed into the first game as well as a number of in-engine scenes used throughout the second title as well that look great, though it would have been nice if the style remained consistent.

It is worth noting that there is a bit of voiced dialogue in the games but it is kept to a bare minimum though it is handled quite well with both English and Japanese available. The soundtrack features some great background tracks that stand out as some of the best that the series has had to offer.

Overall

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles brings together two great games that tell a continuous story filled with a great cast of characters, witty writing, and solid puzzles that can keep players on their feet through most cases though the problem of getting ahead of the game still remains an issue at times. To make things even better, considering both the setting and characters are brand new to the series, newcomers and long-time fans can both get the same level of enjoyment here in what is a great pair of games that can finally be appreciated at their best.
