Super Arcade Football Takes To The Nintendo Switch Pitch Today

0

Cross-play allows Nintendo Switch players to kick off with others on PC and mobile.

Wimbledon, UK – September 20th, 2021 – OutOfTheBit announces that Super Arcade Football has arrived on Nintendo Switch today. With this latest launch players will have a hat trick of platforms to choose from as they enjoy the fast-paced, modern take on classic football games across Steam, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Super Arcade Football takes players back to an era of togetherness, allowing for up to four players to enjoy couch co-op local play. Players can also test their skills against the computer, if they want to refine their skills alone. Match modifiers keep players on their toes and can be as traditional as changing the size of the goal and game speed, or as flustering as destructive meteorites and slippery oil.

Along with quick matches, players can experience an entire Story Mode set in the same universe as OutOfTheBit’s smash hit Super Arcade Racing. Custom tournaments, featuring a number of pitches, weather conditions and more, are as fun as they are satisfying to win; but beware, the different environments affect each match in unique ways.

Fans of retro gaming are in for another treat as Barry Leitch has provided the soundtrack for Super Arcade Football, having worked on titles such as Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 and Horizon Chase Turbo. Leitch created the soundtrack in .MOD format, a file format found on Amiga computers from the 1990s, for an added old school touch. Super Arcade Football is available for $9.99/£9.99/€9.99 on Steam and Nintendo Switch but right now there’s a 50% sale on Nintendo Switch, giving players even better value for money to celebrate the launch. Whichever platform players kick off on, cross-play allows them to enjoy competition against all other platforms.

About OutOfTheBit

OutOfTheBit was founded in 2008 by Ali Motisi, who started out by making faithful digital versions of classic board and card games, including some Italian card games, as an homage to his Sicilian heritage. The company is based in Wimbledon, South London, and following the success of some of their mobile classics the company expanded and began working on original IPs. Super Arcade Football began development and was released on Steam Early Access in 2016, and Super Arcade Racing was also built on the company’s own custom engine – CerealBox.

Ember Lab Announces PS5 Fidelity Mode, PS5 Activities and Game Help, and Photo Mode for its Highly-Anticipated Action-Adventure

LOS ANGELES: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 – Independent game development and animation studio, Ember Lab, will release its inaugural game Kena: Bridge of Spirits Tuesday, which goes live at 4:00 AM UTC (9/21), 12:00 AM ET (9/21), 9 PM PT (9/20) on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and the Epic Games Store. Since first being revealed during Sony’s June 2020 Future of Gaming PS5 event, this story-driven action-adventure has won over fans with its stunning visuals and endearing characters to become one of the most anticipated games of the year.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits seamlessly blends a compelling narrative with exploration, puzzle-solving, and fast-paced combat. This gorgeous, immersive adventure takes players on a journey of self-discovery as Kena restores balance to an ancient village in a once-thriving environment. Players take on the role of Kena, a young Spirit Guide on a quest to uncover the mysterious story surrounding the demise of the village. Using her staff and the help of her collection of tiny companions known as Rot, the player will disarm adversaries, unlock new skills, uncover secrets, and restore the beauty of the land.

Honored earlier this year as a Tribeca Festival “Official Selection”, Kena: Bridge of Spirits was one of eight narrative games showcased for its storytelling. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is available in both a Standard Digital Edition ($39.99) and a Deluxe Digital Edition ($49.99), which includes the digital soundtrack, an in-game silver staff, and golden Rot skin exclusives. All PlayStation editions include both PS5 and PS4 digital versions of the game.

Those playing Kena on the PS5 have access to several exclusive features including full support for PlayStation Activities with more than 200 Game Help videos to increase the game’s accessibility. PS5 players also will have the option to play in “Fidelity Mode,” locked at a framerate of 30 fps with native 4k resolution for a more cinematic experience, or the PS5 version’s default “Performance Mode”, targeting 60 fps and upscaled 4K resolution to prioritize gameplay. PC players will also be happy to hear that Kena: Bridge of Spirits has DirectX 12 support.

“We were inspired to make Kena by the films and games we enjoyed together growing up, so we wanted to ensure the game was reflective and cinematic as well as challenging; an experience that would appeal to and be accessible for a broad range of players,” said Ember Lab co-founder and COO Josh Grier.

Another feature Ember Lab has been keeping under wraps that’s sure to be popular thanks to Kena’s adorable Rot companions is Photo Mode, which brings more fun aspects to the gameplay. In Photo Mode, players can pause the action to stage the game’s characters – including the Rot with the wardrobe of optional hats, then resume the action to bring them to life.   “We’re very excited to share the “Cheese!” function in Photo Mode,” shared Hunter Schmidt, Ember Lab’s Animation Director.

“When players have set up their perfect photo angle, they’ll have the option to have the characters in the photo say “CHEESE!” and strike a pose. Many characters have multiple poses, so you can snap a great variety of fun shots in the same location. I’m very excited to see what kinds of photos players will capture!”

Kena: Bridge of Spirits can still be pre-ordered today, which will unlock a special collection of exclusive celebration Rot hats, and will be available for live purchase starting tomorrow, Sep. 21 (4:00 UTC/9 PM PT), on the PlayStation and Epic Games stores. Tormented Souls Review

Tormented Souls

Developers: Dual Effect, Abstract Digital
Publisher: PQube
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $19.99 – Available Here

Overview

When survival horror games first began appearing, players were tasked with trying their best to make their way through horrific creatures with few resources and numerous puzzles blocking their path. Over the years even the series that were once beloved survival horror titles have been moving away from these concepts or, at best, merging them with more focus being placed on action. Now here comes an indie title designed specifically to feel like the classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill games of the past in the form of Tormented Souls. With Dual Effect and Abstract Digital’s take on survival horror trying to blend classic mechanics with modern day aesthetics, has Tormented Souls succeeded in providing a spooky and challenging experience?

Story

One day Caroline Walker receives a letter in the mail containing a strange picture of twin girls. In an attempt to make sense of the picture, Caroline heads to Winterlake Mansion to try and find out the truth behind the picture and why it pains her to look at. Shortly after arriving Caroline is knocked out only to wake up intubated and naked in a bathtub. To make matters worse, one of her eyes has been removed while she was unconscious. If things weren’t already bad enough, it quickly becomes apparent that evil forces have begun running rampant in the hospital turned mansion as horrific murderous creatures roam the halls and being caught in the dark for too long will result in an immediate death.

Tormented Souls excels at creating a spooky atmosphere for players to make their way through as Caroline pushes forward in an effort to find out the secrets behind what is happening in the building and the twins in the photo. It takes some great design to make sure that tension often remains high, especially when exploring new locations and the game manages to pull that off exceptionally well. On the other hand, the actual story itself is a bit too predictable at times with the few twists that are revealed being easy to see coming. It must be said that providing extra context clues and plot elements through the various notes, of which most have different text on each page, is a clever move that rewards exploration and helps expand upon the horrors while not drawing players out of the experience.

Gameplay

In many ways Tormented Souls wears its homages on its sleeves as numerous aspects of the game feel like they are direct references taken from either the Resident Evil or Silent Hill series and for the most part it manages to pull these aspects together well. Players will find themselves exploring the oft-narrow corridors and rooms of the mansion, navigating with fixed camera angles, using either free moving controls or classic tank controls should the player choose. As players explore they will find everything from healing items, ammo for weapons, and of course plenty of objects that will be used to solve the many puzzles in the game. In fact, the game even uses a tape recording system, meaning that there are a limited number of saves available in the game and no autosave available should the player die in some horrible fashion.

Combat in Tormented Souls is heavy and satisfying feeling with there being a number of weapons that players will come across, with their first weapon being a souped-up nail gun that serves as a primary weapon as well as a crowbar for when things get dicey. This list of weaponry gets a little longer by the end of the game but players will always want to be a bit wary of facing down enemies. Not only can they deal some solid damage to Caroline, though a limited back-step/dodge can be used to avoid damage, but Tormented Souls can be rather strict with ammunition. Now, there is certainly enough in the game to advance through if players are creative enough but it is entirely possible to find yourself in a bad way if too much ammo is wasted or missed when running through areas and that doesn’t even count a certain unkillable “Nemesis” style enemy that will begin to pursue Caroline after a certain point in the game.

In a new twist on survival horror, players will also have to worry about more than just enemies as simply navigating the mansion can be a deadly affair thanks to the ever present risk of the darkness. With most of the building either running on generators or dilapidated beyond repair, players will need to make use of a lighter to try and navigate through the dark. Of course, holding a lighter means that players cannot wield a weapon at the same time so often they must either run away from a monster should it appear or limit themselves to the scant light provided by a freshly lit set of candles. This also means that players will need to keep their lighter out whenever traveling to a new room as it may be completely dark inside and ready to drag Caroline to her doom.

As for puzzles, where many survival horror titles now feature watered down puzzles if any at all, Tormented Souls relishes in them. Players will be searching room to room looking for various bits and pieces of objects that all serve some sort of purpose and it is up to them to figure out how exactly everything will fit together. While there are still some puzzles that are as simple as retrieving an item, many puzzles in Tormented Souls require quite a bit of thought and even some rather outlandish ideas that can easily stump someone. Most puzzle solutions can revolve around finding a note and deciphering clues, mimicking a noise, and more in what ends up being a challenging but incredibly rewarding feeling of accomplishment when they are conquered.

It is worth noting that, considering Tormented Souls is still an indie game, the title does make quite a lot of use of what rooms are in the game. Players will often need to backtrack through parts of the mansion to either unlock a door with a freshly obtained key, pick up an object they still might need that was left somewhere else, and more. This isn’t too much of an issue thanks to the design layout of the mansion as well as a handy map that works just well enough to be useful without giving away too much but players should be prepared for plenty of backtracking until near the end of the title.

Visuals & Audio

With Tormented Souls prioritizing next-gen consoles the company was able to focus on making sure that the 3D environments that players will travel through are incredibly detailed. There is a stark disconnect between the gruesome medical equipment scattered throughout gorgeous mansion locations that only helps add to the feeling of discontent when exploring and encountering the nightmarishly mangled monsters that roam the halls. These beings are fused together with medical equipment and other twisted machinery that players must defend themselves against and can be truly gruesome to look at. As for the normal character models, Caroline’s clothing physics are highly detailed and the light reflections also are exceptionally handled here. That being said, some enemy animations are a bit rough around the edges and a certain “Nemesis” style monster’s movement ends up being more humorous than scary.

In true 90s style survival horror, the voice acting is well, incredibly rough. This is either intentionally done to try and capture that feeling of classic games but either way players should expect some rather campy dialogue and a lack of frightened chatter from Caroline. The soundtrack fits quite well as players will find that there are a number of great sounding tense tracks to go along with exploring the mansion, including a save room theme to signify safe areas.

Overall

There has been a lack of great classic survival horror titles in recent years and Tormented Souls looks to rectify that in as many ways as possible. The title is clearly filled with love for the classic series that helped establish the genre in the ’90s and manages to put its own unique spin on things as well by adding a number of fresh new mechanics to keep things interesting. Sure, the story may not be anything special but the amazing puzzles, beautifully haunting atmosphere, and balancing act of resource management more than make up for it as Tormented Souls easily establishes itself as a modern survival horror that fans of the genre will adore.

Dice Legacy Review

Dice Legacy

Developer: DESTINYbit
Publisher: Ravenscourt, Maple Whispering
Platform: Switch, Windows (Previewed)
Release Date: 9 September 2021
Price:  $19.99 USD/ $24.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

DESTINYbit is heading in a new direction after their free to play RTS Empires Apart. Dice Legacy is a rogue-like city builder. It challenges players to enter a new land and forge their way through uncharted territory in hopes of building a new civilization.

Story

There isn’t much story in Dice Legacy besides the rough idea that sends players into the world. Rogue genre titles rarely have much story, so it’s hard to punish Dice Legacy for its basic premise.

Gameplay

Dice Legacy’s most obvious twist on the city building genre is its dice. Each unit is represented by a die that have different sides for each major gameplay action. Each die’s action can be used once before the die is exhausted. Players can roll their dice as they please, but each roll will deplete the number of remaining rolls before the die is destroyed. Buildings can upgrade a die to specialize in certain abilities or open new ones. It’s a unique gameplay mechanic that adds a sense of randomness found in deck building rogue-lite titles without feeling like DESTINYbit is just following the crowd.

The rogue-like genre underwent a renaissance when rogue-lite and other hybrid titles exploded onto the scene. Games like Spelunky and Rogue Legacy were released to critical acclaim in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Since then, developers have looked at ways to push the boundaries of the genre. Dice Legacy is probably one of the most innovative takes by returning to the genre’s rogue-like roots and applying it to a city builder. There is a slight rogue-lite element where players can carry over upgraded dice to a single future run, but the fact that carrying over dice requires players to go rather deep in the tech tree and expend a lot of resources limits the mechanic.

The gameplay in Dice Legacy is brutally hard. It is all about juggling multiple balls in the air at once except the player has someone standing by to kick the placer face if a single ball is dropped. Players will be managing resource collection, prepping for winter, territory expansion, group happiness, unit ratios, and dice health, all while dealing with constant attacks of increasing regularity and difficulty.  The mechanics and depth are off as there are simply too many deep mechanics that is almost too chaotic to balance in the mid game. Dice Legacy would benefit from adjusting complexity or at least tweaking the priorities of the mechanics.

The in-game tutorials are in a rough state that makes the game difficult to learn for new players. The tutorials are a simple build this, build that affair. There aren’t great suggestions on some of the finer mechanics of the game or basic strategies to get players off the ground. It’s usually a bad sign when the developer has to post a beginner’s strategy on the game’s official wiki.

The challenge in Dice Legacy is the learning the correct, efficient strategy to make it deep into the late game. The problem is the quick pacing is half of what makes the game so hard. The difficulty starts with a tame beginning followed by a quick upward curve. The curve means it is very easy to make fatal error in the early to mid game that will result in a slow, mind numbing death. Once the player hits this point, the game gets viciously boring. It’s often easier to just quit than to try to slog through. For a game that requires a player to master efficiency; the slow, painful, and drawn-out march to failure makes learning challenging. There is a pacifist mode is designed to let players explore and push into the further ends of the tech tree at their own pace, but the game would benefit from an easy difficulty that would bridge the gap between the pacifist and normal difficulties.

Players who are willing to dedicate the time and effort into learning the intricacies of Dice Legacy will be rewarded with an impressive amount of replayability. There are extra rulers to unlock that have their own wager abilities and starting resources. There are three higher difficulties for players to conquer if the normal difficulty becomes so easy it is a way of farming dice. There are five extra scenarios that offer challenging twists on the main scenario. The variations are very interesting, like The Great Winter that gives players a single summer to prepare for an endless winter. While it seems easy enough for the developers to add new scenarios in future content updates, Dice Legacy would absolutely shine with a tool that allows community created scenarios.

The developers have committed the cardinal sin on the PC: there is only a single adjustable key bind, and it’s a binary option. Players can only switch between the space bar rolling dice or pausing the game. Everything else is hard coded with no single list to tell players what each key does. The only bright spot is players can automatically place the relevant item into a slot by holding shift and clicking.

Visuals

Dice Legacy offers a striking visual style. The game is a little on the cartoony side. The 3D graphics are a bit more realistic, but the 2D work and characters really lean into the exaggerated style. The most eye-catching thing about Dice Legacy is the curved world that looks more like a rollercoaster track than a planet.

Audio

The audio is minimal in Dice Legacy, but what is there is good. The sound effects are serviceable and aren’t distracting. The soundtrack does an excellent job of capturing the emotion of the game’s two seasons.

Overall

Make no mistake, Dice Legacy is easily the most innovative game to hit the rogue genre in years. The problem is purely in how the game is executed. The idea of creating a rogue-like city builder and replacing units with randomly rolled dice is absolutely brilliant. While there is nothing wrong with brutally difficult games, Dice Legacy struggles with proper pacing and a poorly designed learning curve. For rogue-like or city builder fans looking for an interesting twist on the respective genres, Dice Legacy is worth a look during a good sale for its innovation alone. Just don’t expect the same level of brilliance in the actual game experience.

Zynga Announces ReVamp, the First Multiplayer Social Deception Game For Snapchat

0

SAN FRANCISCO – September 17, 2021 Zynga Inc. (Nasdaq: ZNGA), a global leader in interactive entertainment, announced today that ReVamp, an upcoming multiplayer social deception game, will launch soon in select markets exclusively for Snapchat. The vampire-themed game will be the first social deception title on Snapchat, giving Snapchatters their first chance to sink their teeth into this popular genre.

ReVamp is a real-time multiplayer imposter game where players aim to reveal who the vampire player is among their group of friends while they renovate the rooms of an old mansion. In the game, human players must complete renovation tasks, such as demolition and building, to improve their chances of survival while identifying and defeating the vampire during the voting phase. Vampire players must avoid suspicion while picking off human players by completing a list of fake tasks throughout the mansion.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Snap to create fun new snackable games that fit seamlessly with their platform’s highly social mechanics,” said Bernard Kim, President of Publishing at Zynga. “ReVamp reimagines the social deception game genre for Snapchat’s human and vampire players of all skill levels.”

“Zynga was one of the first developers to launch a title on Snapchat. Since our partnership began, we’ve been impressed by how their development teams work to define the social gaming space as well as bring fun new game concepts and content creation to our community,” said Pany Haritatos, Snap’s Head of Snap Games. “As our games platform continues to grow, titles like ReVamp highlight the platform’s evolution and potential.”
