JAGEX PARTNERS SIGNS DEAL WITH OUTLIER GAMES TO PUBLISH ‘THIS MEANS WARP’

JAGEX PARTNERS SIGNS DEAL WITH OUTLIER GAMES TO PUBLISH ‘THIS MEANS WARP’

Jagex to support the launch of Outlier Games’ first title

The roguelike title is the third deal of the RuneScape creators’ third-party publishing initiative, following ‘Space Punks’ and ‘Melvor Idle’

LONDON, UK – Thursday, February 3, 2022. Jagex, the leader in developing and publishing deep, community-driven video games today announced that it has signed a deal with Irish/Canadian indie developer Outlier Games to publish the studio’s inaugural game – the spaceship management roguelike This Means Warp. The game is set to be released on PC via Steam Early Access on March 17th 2022.

Designed with multiplayer and replayability at its core, This Means Warp encourages players to cooperate and think tactically in hectic, real-time space battles, and adopt shrewd strategies as they guide their ship through a hostile, procedurally generated universe. Taking inspiration from roguelikes such as FTL and party games such as the Overcooked series, This Means Warp sees players control crew members onboard a ship, manning different systems, targeting weapons and conducting repairs, and ultimately charting a course through the treacherous void of space.

Check out the gameplay trailer for This Means Warp here

This Means Warp is the first game to be developed by Outlier Games, an independent studio founded by Paul Froggatt and Matt Rathbun in 2018, based in Dublin, Ireland, and Toronto, Canada. It will be the third game to be published by Jagex Partners, the publishing arm of the British game developer of deep, community-driven games and best known for the RuneScape franchise. Jagex Partners will be providing additional resources, marketing support and its extensive publishing experience throughout This Means Warp’s launch and commercial lifecycle.

Technical director and co-founder of Outlier Games Paul Froggatt said: “We’re incredibly excited to be working with Jagex Partners to bring This Means Warp to market. The scale of support that we’ve been able to draw on in the run up to our Early Access release has really impressed us, not just in terms of the specialised skill sets that the teams at Jagex bring to the table, but how much their support has allowed us to plan for the future of both This Means Warp and Outlier Games as a company. They’ve been nothing but responsive and professional throughout this entire process and we look forward to working closely with them moving forward.”

Phil Mansell, Jagex CEO, said: “When we were first introduced to Outlier Games, we were incredibly impressed with what they’d created in This Means Warp – it combines some of the best aspects of roguelikes with party games in a way that encourages cooperation and has endless replayability. What most stood out to us as a publisher was how Outlier has involved its community at every stage of development so far, putting player feedback at the centre of how the game is made, and influencing the direction its development has taken. As a publisher, it’s a rare pleasure to find a game that resonates with its player base, that can bring that appeal to the wider gaming audience, and that has serious long term commercial opportunity. We look forward to supporting the launch of This Means Warp later this year, and Outlier Games as a developer well into the future.”

More details about This Means Warp can be found on the official Steam Page here, where players can also enjoy a fully playable demo of the game prior to its launch on Steam Early Access later on March 17th 2022.

If you are interested in interviewing any of the Jagex or Outlier Games teams, then please drop me an email and I will be happy to set something up! Paul from Outlier Games has a great story about jumping ship from Google to pursue a career in game development, wherein his main goal is to create a game that allows others to have the most fun that Paul and Matt can possibly engineer!

The British Esports Student Champs increase participation by 115% for Spring Divisions and announce date change for grand finals

32% of UK’s colleges set to compete in the British Esports Student Champs

February 3rd 2022, London: The British Esports Student Champs has once again returned, following the kick off of the Spring Divisions in January. Year-on-year the Student Champs has continued to grow significantly, but saw a rapid increase in participants since the addition of the popular first-person shooter title Valorant, in Winter 2021.

The Champs is an extracurricular, team-based activity that engages a wide demographic of young people; whilst providing an avenue to motivate and inspire students.

With an increased number of sign-ups, the Spring Divisions will see a total of 365 teams compete from across 124 schools and colleges. 90 of the 124 participating institutions are colleges, meaning that the British Esports Student Champs will see 32.4% of the UK’s colleges competing this spring.

Schools and colleges can register teams to compete over the course of the academic year in four esports titles: Rocket League, Overwatch, League of Legends, and Valorant.

For more information, visit the British Esports Student Champs website.

During the Winter qualifiers, which concluded at the end of December 2021, teams competed in each esports title to determine their division in Spring, based upon their position on the final Winter leaderboard. Each division in Spring will have its own group stage and playoffs, and the top finalists will battle it out at a live grand finals event.

Last year British Esports confirmed that the grand finals will be held in collaboration with the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies – part of Nottingham Trent University in 2022. Due to conflicts with exam times, the event has been pushed back from original dates 18th-19th June to the 2nd-3rd July 2022 in Nottingham.

The 2020/21 seasons’ events were summarised in an event aftermovie, which can be found here.

Programme details for this year’s live finals are to be confirmed over the coming months.

About the Rainbow Six Esports Global Program
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege’s Esports includes 4 main regions, Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. All four regions run in parallel their own dedicated regional leagues, all feeding into one unique and global race towards a qualification for the Six Invitational, the pinnacle of the Rainbow Six Siege competitive year. As teams across the four regions face off in regional and global competitions, featuring 3 Majors and regional leagues, they will be ranked based on an in-depth point system that rewards sustained performance. Each competitive Season runs for nearly a year, from March through the following February. Each Season will be divided into 4 quarters. The first three quarters correspond to the 3 “Stages” of the regional leagues and conclude with a Six Major bringing together 16 of the world’s best teams – four per region across the four regions. Each stage awards prize money and points for the Global Standings. The Global Standings determine the sixteen teams earning a spot to the annual Six Invitational. Following the 3 stages, the last quarter of the season will be dedicated to regional finals and relegations. The season will then conclude with the Six Invitational that will crown the world’s best team. Four additional teams will also have a chance to qualify for the Six Invitational through Regional Open Qualifiers, making the Six invitational a 20-team competition.

The game recalls its popular deep RPG mechanics and fantasy-based storylines that made the original a standout hit, with plans to continue introducing new classes and game content over time.

We have a big roadmap ahead with some big surprises that I’m sure will excite fans, both old and new.”

Starting today, players can join the countdown to launch by visiting the game website at www.PuzzleQuest3.com to participate in the pre-registration campaign and learn how to unlock free rewards at launch. Reward milestones are based on completing “quests” such as wishlisting on Steam, pre-registering on Google Play, signing up for the newsletter or following PQ3 on social media (Facebook and Twitter @puzzlequest3).  With each milestone completed, all players will receive greater in-game rewards to help kick start their journey into Etheria, from valuable resources like gems and gold, to powerful gear like the Dragonguard Ring.

UBISOFT ANNOUNCES NEW GLOBAL “ESPORTS AND COMPETITIVE GAMING” DIVISION

UBISOFT ANNOUNCES NEW GLOBAL “ESPORTS AND COMPETITIVE GAMING” DIVISION

Starting January 2022, the Esports and Competitive Gaming division will operate as a consolidated global team, shaping the future of Ubisoft’s portfolio of existing and future competitive games.

Sydney, Australia February 2, 2022 — Today, Ubisoft announced the reshape of its internal esports teams into one “Esports and Competitive Gaming” division, a newly consolidated global team which, while continuously developing Ubisoft’s competitive gaming activity in local territories through regional and local experts, will work towards one common objective, shaping the future of esports and competitive gaming at Ubisoft, and deliver on the company’s mission: enrich players’ lives by creating memorable and meaningful experience, on all levels of competition.

“Building upon six years of experience drawn from our competitive gaming activities on titles such Tom Clancy’s® Rainbow Six Siege, Brawlhalla®, Trackmania® or For Honor®, and looking at the evolution of our industry across the board, the revamp of our internal structure will give us the adequate tools to enter the next chapter of our journey and shape the future of esports and competitive gaming at Ubisoft.”, shared Geoffroy Sardin, Senior Vice President, Executive Publishing at Ubisoft.

François-Xavier Deniele, at the forefront of all strategic topics since the early days of esports at Ubisoft and orchestrating the company’s esports operations in the EMEA region for the past 6 years, has been appointed Senior Director, Esports and Competitive Gaming. He will now oversee all aspects of esports and competitive gaming at Ubisoft and lead the team as it takes on current and upcoming challenges and opportunities across all esports and competitive gaming strategic topics.

“We are proud of what our teams have accomplished over the past years in all regions, and of the milestones we have reached on our competitive portfolio in such a short time.” said François-Xavier Deniele, Senior Director, Esports and Competitive Gaming at Ubisoft. “Now our focus turns to 2022 and beyond. Strengthening esports and competitive gaming as a key pillar of Ubisoft’s culture, our streamlined internal organization will allow us to gain in agility, ultimately benefiting all our competitive ecosystems across Ubisoft’s portfolio of brands.”

The Esports and Competitive Gaming division is dedicated to:

  • Building thriving and inclusive competitive ecosystems for Ubisoft’s portfolio of competitive games, for fans to engage and take part in, and for organizations and sponsors to grow in. Whether looking at our most mature esports scenes such as Rainbow Six Siege’s, Brawlhalla’s and Trackmania’s, or other existing and future competitive games, we are dedicated to grow each competitive ecosystem into reaching its full potential.
  • Creating a multi-year plan with competitive activities, tournaments and leagues adapted to all, and a clear path from amateur to professional play, that inspires and engages players across the world.
  • Providing superior entertainment value and service to Ubisoft’s audience, through a diverse esports product offer, premium broadcast and event production, entertaining content, and a strong local presence allowing local communities to enjoy activities and content tailored for them.
  • Leveraging new opportunities by accompanying early on Ubisoft’s development and editorial teams across Ubisoft’s worldwide network of development studios, to collaborate on competitive games’ vision, scope and features, as well as revenue-sharing in-game items strategies.
  • Implementing, in collaboration with partners and organizations, healthy and sustainable esports business models and revenue streams, that contribute to create a mature and virtuous environment for all.

Within the perimeter of the aforementioned strategic mission and objectives, some of the team’s key areas of focus in the coming months and years will be to work their way towards going back to international esports events with live audience whenever the situation allows it, and to keep on investing in the growth of Ubisoft’s existing esports titles. Ubisoft has recently announced exciting plans for the Year 7 of Brawlhalla Esports and will make much anticipated reveals for the Year 7 of Rainbow Six Siege, for the game and its esports scene, during the upcoming Six Invitational.

In addition to the existing competitive activities on the company’s esports titles, the Esports and Competitive Gaming division is also looking to broaden the portfolio of games offering competitive experience to fans. Already in discussion with the development teams of some of Ubisoft’s upcoming games, the team is looking to build competitive ecosystems across a diverse range of game genres, and to build upon their success and experience with the R6 SHARE program on Rainbow Six Siege to create revenue sharing strategies for other projects.

Alongside broadening its portfolio, a key development axis will be to make competitive gaming more easily accessible to players, by embedding competitive gaming at the core of their regular gaming routine. To achieve this, Ubisoft will accompany platforms to offer direct ‘plug and play’ competitive experience on its games, whether it’s playing or watching, directly embedded in their platform.

“Our partnership with PlayStation to have Rainbow Six Siege be part of their native Open Series Tournaments is a great success and a great showcase of the ultimate grassroot activity.” explained François-Xavier Deniele. “It allows a different audience than the one taking part in our professional and semi-professional circuits to engage in competitive gaming and we are looking forward to multiply similar opportunities.”

And finally, the broadcast studios in Sao Paulo, Paris and Las Vegas, will also play a pivotal role as the showcases of Ubisoft’s competitive activities.

With increased demand for furs during the winter months, trappers and merchants of all sorts (Butchers and Gus Macmillan included) will pay out an extra 50% RDO$ bonus for all Pelts delivered to them all month long. Pelts turned in as Materials to Cripps will also have an increased value, while all Trader Sales completed throughout the month of February will pay out double RDO$.

Experienced Traders who band together to protect a haul of goods from attackers in the Trade Route Free Roam Event will receive 2X Character and Role XP for their efforts. And all Traders who play Red Dead Online this month will also receive 10 Predator Bait, while Naturalists will receive 10 Blending Tonics.

2X RDO$ on Free Roam Missions

Keep an eye out for strangers and familiar faces offering Free Roam Missions while out and about on your travels — including the likes of Jake and Sadie Adler, Bonnie MacFarlane, Josiah Trelawny, Sean Macguire, and many more. These adventures are paying out 2X RDO$ as well, regardless of your nobility or notoriety.

2X RDO$ and XP on Plunder

Seize and steal supplies from a central location and deliver them safely back to your home base in Plunder, this month’s featured Showdown Mode. Be on the lookout for thieves from the opposing team or pilfer from their stash. Whichever team is sitting atop the most loot wins. PlayingPlunder will result in 2X RDO$ and XP for the next month.

2X RDO$ and XP on Call to Arms

Grab your weapons, place your allies at strategic positions around the perimeter, and batten down the hatches against wave after wave of ruthless attack. This month the fan-favorite Call to Arms mode is also paying out 2X RDO$ and XP.

Free Morning Tail Coat

Tumbleweed’s sheriff Sam Freeman needs help tracking down an abducted woman. Completing the A Land of Opportunities Mission “Love and Honor” anytime this month will earn you a red Morning Tail Coat.

Replay any A Land of Opportunities Missions by pulling up the Pause menu, selecting Progress, then Story Missions.
