My Time at Sandrock Early Access Preview

My Time at Sandrock

Developer: Pathea Games
Publisher: Pathea Games
Platform: PC
Release Date: May 25, 2022
Price:  $24.99 USD – Available Here

There was a time that farming and life simulation games were something of a rarity, especially those that featured plenty of combat and other elements besides tilling soil. That started to change around 2016 and one of these games that happened to appear was Pathea Games’ My Time at Portia, a unique take on the genre that not only offered players a chance to enter an entirely new world where they can farm but also craft plenty of objects to help their town grow. With a unique setting and plenty of heart, My Time at Portia set itself apart from a number of titles that tried to jump on the trend at the time. Now years later the developer is back with something of a sequel that sprung out of DLC that grew so ambitious that it deserved its own game.

My Time at Sandrock takes players out of the lusher fields and into the more dangerous and risky life of the desert frontier. Still set in the same world where an apocalyptic event occured and humanity managed to come out the other side mostly intact, the people of Sandrock have managed to stick it out despite the desert’s harsh conditions. Past events have led to the town falling into a dilapidated state and players take on the role of a new Builder coming in to take over the job of their previous one retiring. One thing that players will immediately notice is that Sandrock offers a rather extensive character creator which is a nice touch given how the player character appears in nearly every cutscene.

The next thing will be just how similar but also different My Time at Sandrock is from Portia. Players still obtain various smaller requests from a board asking for various products to be made and delivered or direct requests from a character themselves with a time limit while larger more intensive tasks that often progress the story are almost always presented with no time limit and allow for players to work around growing their own repertoire, gathering resources, and more without the need for an ever ticking clock. Crafting large items still makes use of a construction platform where materials are brought though now players will have an easier job of locating exactly what materials will be required when crafting things as manufacturing tools will specifically highlight not only what object needs to be crafted, but also how many they need to make should they already have the base materials.

These little quality of life improvements are almost immediate across the board, be it the easier manufacturing of required parts, the ability to navigate through storage easier without needing to explore through numerous chests, and even quick bag upgrades should players find themselves desperate for a spot. That is a good thing however as life in the desert is difficult and this is emphasized by how players are now meant to gather some basic materials compared to before as well as dealing with the weather conditions that come with living in a desert. Not only does the desert sand gather on everything requiring a dusting off from time to time but sandstorms can rage through the land and clog up machinery. To make things worse, the ever worsening water supply problem requires constant maintenance as machines need water and fuel to run but water is a limited resource, just like wood.

Seeing wood as one of the first things needed for a project, my immediate thought was to chop down a nearby tree only to find myself halted by the local police a few swings in and given a warning not to chop down any trees or cacti and to respect the water of the oasis or risk not only a fine but also becoming a town pariah. As such, players will find that Sandrock focuses more on gathering on a smaller scale either through scavenging through junk piles that gather up in the desert for material that can be tossed into a recycler and produce base materials or by digging through the rubble of the local ancient ruins for fancier ores and lost relics. Recycling has become the way of life for those living in Sandrock and comes off as a unique mechanic that may be a bit off putting at first but quickly feels like a fitting theme.

Of course resources can be obtained from other places besides scavenging junk piles and smashing small rocks… they can also be found through combat. My Time at Sandrock currently offers a variety of different enemies to face down against in what has been some slightly modified combat that mostly sees the ability to break an enemy’s guard and deal large damage afterwards. These foes range from being strange oddities, amalgamations of animals that are familiar to real life, and straight up fantasy and sci-fi foes that threaten the people of Sandrock. Combat works fairly simply and offers a variety of weapons at the moment with more weapon types on the way, with the daggers currently being a personal favorite though being able to swap between melee and ranged combat on the fly is quite enjoyable especially with how solid firearms feel in this early build.

When not fighting, gathering, or crafting My Time at Sandrock offers a rather sizable cast of characters to interact with in the town. The cast offers a fairly wide array of personalities that only grow more unique the more players happen to interact with them. Thanks to a plethora of character events available so far in the early access, players can get a real feel for the town and most of its residents right away. It is also nice to note that although there is no real romance system in the game yet from the way things look, that there is a wide range of bachelorettes and bachelors available for players to start to befriend so far. This is something that is vital for a game like this and thankfully the wide array of choices is far more than even what has been found in larger games in the same genre so it will be interesting to see just how much further things can grow from here.

Recommended

My Time at Sandrock capitalizes on its status as a sequel by making numerous quality of life improvements to a familiar formula that are already evident despite the game still being in early access. While numerous elements are still in development, the groundwork that has already been laid is showing great promise for a release window of sometime in 2023 if Pathea Games holds true to their development window.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Kicks-Off Hunting Season on Nintendo Switch Today!

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak takes place following the heroic defense of Kamura Village in Monster Hunter Rise. News of the village’s survival inspires the gallant knight Dame Fiorayne to travel from the distant Kingdom seeking aid. Hunters brave enough to answer the call set out for the port of Elgado Outpost. This research center and Command Post is responsible for stopping the threat befalling the Kingdom. The top of the target list includes powerful creatures inspired by staples of Western horror, known as the Three Lords. This cadre includes the conjoined elemental powerhouse Garangolm, the chilling Fanged Wyvern Lunagaron, and the vampiric Elder Dragon Malzeno. In addition to these nightmarish foes, other new monster variants and returning fan-favorites including Scorned Magnamalo, Espinas, and Shagaru Magala emerge to challenge hunters in the added Master Rank quest difficulty.

In order to meet these calamitous forces head-on, hunters who arrive at Elgado Outpost must find new ways to approach combat. While Kamura Village is renowned for its unique Wirebug techniques, including Silkbind Attacks and Wyvern Riding, hunters summoned to the Kingdom will learn new Switch Skills and the new Switch Skill Swap ability. Switch Skill Swap enables hunters to assign Switch Skills to two different loadouts which can be changed on the fly during hunts. The added flexibility of choosing which skills are best for any situation allows a practiced hunter to overcome almost any obstacle. Hunters who find themselves under attack while performing a Switch Skill Swap can also perform a Swap Evade in any direction to avoid danger, or reposition for a continued assault.

Researching the behavior of the Three Lords takes hunters across the Kingdom to exciting new and reimagined locales, including the newly-unveiled Citadel and the returning Jungle. The Citadel boasts snow-swept peaks cascading down to lush forests teeming with new forms of endemic life. At the center of this vast region sits a long-abandoned fortress serving as a bastion for the very monsters it was built to keep out. Meanwhile, the Jungle locale returns from the second generation of Monster Hunter™ titles and boasts a warm climate with abundant rainfall, making it a paradise for the monsters and plant life that make their home there.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak also introduces new ways for players to bond with the game’s charming cast of characters through new Follower Quests. These single player hunts allow players to accept and complete quests with their favorite story characters. Each Follower has their own specialization and will even assist players by recovering their health, placing traps, and even riding monsters to turn the tide of battle. Members of Elgado Outpost, such as Fiorayne, Luchika, Jae, Admiral Galleus, and Master Arlow will be accessible as Followers, alongside members of Kamura Village including Hinoa and Minoto. Players will unlock Followers as they progress through the story, and can even earn exclusive rewards for completing Follower Quests.

Hunters eager to track down the next content update can anticipate Lucent Nargacuga the Moon Swift Wyvern and Seething Bazelgeuse returning in August with the iconic Forlorn Arena. Beyond that, more content is planned for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak this fall, winter, and into next year.

XIII Remake – A major update and the Switch version coming September 13

Sydney, Australia, (June 30th, 2022) – Microids is delighted to share a major update for the game XIII Remake as the Nintendo Switch version of the game will be released on September 13th 2022. As a reminder, the game is the remake of the iconic cel-shaded FPS from 2003 and is the adaptation of the 5 first volumes of the Belgian graphic novel of the same name by artist William Vance and writer Jean Van Hamme.

To achieve the quality standards and offer an optimal gaming experience, Microids decided to entrust the development of XIII Remake to the French studio Tower Five (Lornsword: Winter Chronicle). Hard at work for over a year on a major update for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions, the studio has also worked on the multiplayer content as well as the Nintendo Switch port of the game. This update, the multiplayer content and the Switch version will simultaneously release on September 13th.

On September 13th, owners of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions will receive a free update and enjoy the game as intended. The development studio reworked the entire game from the Art Direction to the AI and added numerous technical improvements. Finally, Tower Five has implemented the highly awaited online multiplayer mode for up to 13 players.

“We are fully aware and terribly sorry that the initial launch of XIII Remake on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC did not reach players’ expected quality standards. A bit more than a year ago we took the decision to hire the studio Tower Five to finish the development of the game. Tower Five worked with us in the past, notably on the great port of Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders on Nintendo Switch. We really wanted to take the time to fix the game and offer owners of XIII Remake a free update paying the best possible tribute to the original game we all love. The Nintendo Switch version of the game will of course benefit from all the work done to improve the game as well as the multiplayer mode, which will mark the end of the game’s development. We can’t wait for players to put their hands on this improved version of the game and (re)discover the classic adventures of Agent XIII, as soon as it’s released after the Summer.” declares Stéphane Longeard, CEO Microids.

XIII Remake will launch September 13th 2022 on Nintendo Switch. The free major update will be available the same day for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions.

About the Story of XIII:

Who are you?

The country is still in shock after President Sheridan’s assassination.

You wake up injured and with amnesia on the shore of an east coast beach. The only clues about your identity are the number XIII tattooed on your collarbone and the key to a locker. Despite the memory loss, you realise not everything has been forgotten as you seem to have amazing reflexes comparable to a well-trained government agent. You will soon be on your way to uncover your past, discovering in the process your role in the murder of the US president and unveiling the most astonishing conspiracy in the country’s history.

Play as “XIII” – a man who has no memory about his identity – and try to find out the truth regarding the set-up of a major conspiracy. Follow XIII in his search for his identity through a thrilling solo campaign and brutal local multiplayer battles!

Crossfire: Legion Major Game Updates and ESL Finals Played

Store removed, New game mode, Campaign Act II, a new Payload map – and other community-led updates added!

Sydney, Australia, (June 30th, 2022) – Prime Matter / Smilegate brings Crossfire: Legion, the fast-paced action-packed Real-Time Strategy game currently available to play in Early Access announces the latest addition of content including some truly exciting news:

  • Store removed
Its presence led players to wonder about the introduction of gameplay affecting microtransactions in the future and pay-to-win in general.

While units and gameplay-affecting items were never intended to be locked behind hard currency – only soft-currency tied to player progression – we acknowledge that the way this was presented was fairly confusing. We also heard player feedback about locking units and/or commanders behind player progression.

As a result, we are scrapping both the store and the unit unlock system with the upcoming update – we just don’t want anything to stand between players and enjoying the classic RTS gameplay the game has to offer. In other words, this means:

  • All current and future units will always be available immediately to all players
  • No need to unlock gameplay-affecting items – ever
  • Operations to be removed because of the above, and replaced at a later date by a new progression system
  • DLCs still planned for the future
  • Campaign Act II
The battle rages on with the next 4 missions of our immersive, character-driven campaign – featuring new locations and story beats. Continue to immerse yourself in the expansive world and lore of the Crossfire universe.
  • New game mode : “Battlelines”
Battlelines allows for 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 matches with a focus on army composition rather than the micromanaging of units. This is a macro-focused game mode where players place their units in formation within the designated area and watch them spawn waves that will autonomously fight their way towards the other team’s HQ.
  • New payload map : “Badlands”
In Badlands, players fight to secure each payload amongst the thick foliage and tricky jungle terrain – making the most of numerous narrow lanes to setup ambushes and focused attacks.
  • Other important updates based on player request including “Hotkey Mapping”, “Game Economy Adjustments” etc.

42,000 Gamers, Animation Fans Set New Record at MomoCon 2022

Voices of Mario, Luigi, Master Chief, and Cortana among special guests

ATLANTA – 29 June 2022 – MomoCon 2022 was the most attended in the show’s history, with 42,000 gamers, animation fans, and cosplayers filling the Georgia World Congress Center for the largest gaming convention in the Southeast United States from 26-29 May 2022.

MomoCon 2022 was the first event taking place in the traditional Memorial Day Weekend window since 2019, when organizers skipped two regularly-scheduled events for the health and safety of the community. Despite this extended absence, fans came roaring back, breaking the show’s previous attendance record.

Many special guests helped make this record possible, as the four-day event featured many luminaries from the gaming and animation communities. Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario and Luigi since 1992, hosted a panel where fans got to see the voice behind two of gaming’s most iconic characters. Fans also got to meet Steve Downes (Halo’s Master Chief) and Jen Taylor (Halo’s Cortana in the games and TV series, RWBY’s Salem), and more.

Fans of both western and eastern animation got to meet some of the talent behind their favorite series. The voices of Avatar: The Last Airbender brought more than 2,000 fans together to celebrate the franchise ahead of the reveal of the three upcoming films. Greg Baldwin also hosted his own panel, “Tea with Uncle Iroh”, welcoming another 2,000 excited fans ready to get some one-on-one time with their beloved Uncle.

Fans also got to hear from and take part in Q&A sessions with cast members from beloved series like My Hero Academia, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack, and more. Attendees also had the chance to meet Bill Farmer, the iconic voice of Disney’s Goofy since 1987.

MomoCon hosted a variety of competitive gaming tournaments across Memorial Day weekend, including a $5,000 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament. Along with other gaming tournaments, fans took in high-flying Stranglehold Championship Wrestling matches, melodic tunes in the Disney Singing Contest Finale, indie game showcases, and the return of MomoCon’s Friday night cosplay showcase.

“It was amazing being able to bring back MomoCon and have such a tremendous turnout,” said Jess Merriman, co-founder of MomoCon. “Seeing everyone apart of our tight-knit community have the opportunity to reconnect in person reminded us why we are so passionate about MomoCon. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back in 2023 and expanding to even greater horizons!”
