Overview

What would be the most ungrateful job in the comics universe? Being a cop in Gotham City. Just think about it. A city is ridden with crime, and supervillains and heroes are duking it out on the streets on an almost daily basis. They leave millions in property damage, and half of your precinct is corrupt (maybe even you included). Superheroes and vigilantes get all the praise and at the end of the day, you don’t even feel like you made a difference. Can you imagine what a depressing game that would be, playing as a Gotham City cop? Thank heavens that I have a game in my hands that offers the complete opposite of that.

Story

To quote a certain someone from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: “The Bat is dead. Bury it”. And that’s what happened here. It is how the game opens. Batman dies following a fierce battle with Ra’s al Ghul and leaves a final message for the members of the Bat-family. I mean, it’s Batman. He has a contingency plan for everything. Those members are Batgirl (aka Barbara Gordon), Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood. It is up to them to pick up where Batman left and take over as protectors of Gotham. You know what they say, four heads are better than one (jk, nobody actually says that).

Gameplay

I’d imagine a good number of you have played most of the Arkham games so you would know what to expect. And you’d be wrong. For one, this game isn’t even set in Arkhamverse, and gameplay wise it is drastically different from all of the Arkham games. The first hint that this game isn’t even set in Arkhamverse is that you get to play as Batgirl without being wheelchair-bound. While the story of Gotham Knights is an accidental continuation of how Batman Arkham Knight ends, everything else is its own thing.

In any case, after a few opening cutscenes, you get a choice of who you can play in Gotham Knights. There’s Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood. All of them have unique skills and some are better suited for stealth and guerilla tactics like Batgirl, some for crowd control like Robin and Nightwing, and Red Hood is an expert at dealing a lot of damage to single targets. Belfry tower is your base of operations and a place of planning before every patrol night in Gotham City. Aside from story missions, you’ll have optional side stuff, challenges, random encounters, and a bunch of well-hidden collectibles. There are also loot-based drops such as equipment mods and crafting materials so let’s talk more about that.

Equipment is divided into three things; suit, melee weapon, and range weapon. since I reviewed the deluxe edition of the game, I got some exclusive skins for suits and crafting materials as a nice starting boost. You can insert mods (that you get from enemy drops) in your equipment to raise equipment stats past its limit and all of the crafted suits can be customized visually to your liking or you can use the transmog option anytime on your equipment for some iconic comic book visuals.

One thing that I have to emphasize is that progress in the game and leveling up are properly tuned. Despite having a loot-based system and exp mechanic, I never got to the point where I had to grind and grind because I was under-leveled or anything like that. Crafting is also necessary since you never get equipment from defeating enemies, only occasionally after finishing some missions and optional content. So while crafting is kind of mandatory for proper progress, you’re never suffering a lack of materials (which would lead to a resource grind).

Visuals

On the surface, Gotham Knights could be summed up as “nothing breathtaking, but it does the job”. However, every once in a while the game might catch you by surprise with some of the visual gimmicks such as random lightning flashes as you glide around Gotham City and some areas of it do stand out with its saturated neon lighting. Player characters (all four of them) are exceptionally modeled with all of the variations of costumes but the same couldn’t be said for most of the enemies. While there is a decent number of enemy factions in the game all of the enemies come from 3-4 of the same molds, just different skins. A couple of melee fighters, one or two enemies wielding a gun, and a miniboss here and there, their visuals only different depending if they’re henchmen working for Harley Quinn or Mr. Freeze and such.

Audio

A whole lot of steps forward, one step back. Let’s talk about the forward ones because they sure are impressive. Currently, I’m on my second playthrough of the game, the first one was with Nightwing and now I’m cleaning up Gotham City as Batgirl. One impressive thing I noticed is that all of those four characters have unique dialogues in missions and unique interactions (depending on who you play as at the moment). Remember that you can switch your playing character at any point (you’ll just need to level up their skills accordingly and allocate skill points). But yeah, all of them feel unique. While Red Hood is dark and mostly grumpy, Batgirl is the complete opposite and Nightwing often acts as a voice of reason within the group. But they all have mutual understanding and respect for each other despite their differences and you can feel that in their interactions and by extension – voice acting.

As for the step back, while my complaint can be seen as minor it still bugs me. Despite being dead, Batman often makes appearances through some cutscenes, training missions, and flashbacks. While this new voice actor does his job well, the voice is really hard to get used to. I know he’s not Kevin Conroy but the voice is just terribly distracting and emotionless at times.

Overall

I respect Gotham Knights for trying to do its own thing and not just seem like they’re riding on the coattails of Arkham games. The combat in general is not as fluid as I expected but it does the job. As long as you follow the story and don’t stray from it too far, you will be fine. But if you do (especially when you grapple with some side content) you might notice some design cracks here and there. Controls also feel kinda iffy at times when cornering with a bike and gliding around. There is still a lot of room for improvement here and I hope there are some lessons here that could be learned and errors to be corrected for a potential sequel.

Alongside the reveal that Silent Hill 2 is getting a remake Konami also announced that they are working with publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer No Code to produce a new Silent Hill game by the name of Silent Hill: Townfall. No actual details as to what to expect of Silent Hill: Townfall were revealed other than a teaser trailer though it is worth noting that No Code has previously produced two narrative-driven games by the name of Stories Untold and Observation.

The teaser trailer that tries to establish some of Silent Hill‘s usual themes can be found below and while no platforms or release date were revealed at the time of announcement a PlayStation 5 controller is briefly shown during one scene flash.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Officially Unveiled by Konami and Bloober Team

For some time there were rumors that Bloober Team was working with Konami on some type of Silent Hill game and today it was made official when the companies announced that they are remaking Silent Hill 2. While no release window was given for the game, it was announced that it will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 for a year and on PC.

An overview describing events that fans of the series are already familiar with as “Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: Silent Hill. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her…”

Video Review

Overview

Batora: Lost Haven is an action RPG combining classic hack’n slash action with elements of a twin stick shooter. Players will take on the role of Avril, a girl blessed with the power of the sun and moon. She will use her newfound powers to explore four planets all on a quest to save Earth itself.

Story

The game is based on an Italian fantasy book published in 2018. Batora: Lost Haven appears to be the first time the story is being told in English, as I could not track down an English translation for the book.

The writing is good. The story is interesting enough to keep the player’s attention, although the twists tend to be telegraphed to the players long in advance. The lore feels like it’s drawing from a book as there are hints of deeper world building behind the scenes that the players is missing due to the shorter nature of the game. The dialogue has a nice pacing as it hits the right emotional notes without dragging on unnecessarily.

The morality system is well done as the developers skip the idea of good or evil actions in favour of rash and aggressive or calm and defensive action. There are several no-win choices in the game that have a little bit of teeth. Decisions do matter as the game offers two endings, and it’s nice to see there’s a new game plus mode so players can experience both endings.

Gameplay

Batora: Lost Haven is combat heavy and light on the RPG mechanics. Avril has two modes. In orange sun mode, Avril is a highly mobile melee fighter. In purple moon mode, she is a ranged mage. Basic enemies in the game are marked either orange or purple and must be fought with in the corresponding mode so Avril can inflict maximum damage. Special enemies and bosses have orange and purple health bars, adding a little interesting wrinkle into the fight. At its core, combat is formulaic almost to a fault. Nuke orange enemies with cooldowns right away so Avril has a clear line of sight against purple enemies, then whittle down the purple enemies. This rhythm does not change much until Avril has to haul around an ally who is ranges from a complete boat anchor to a marginally helpful source of damage. The ally has a health bar and must be defended, otherwise its game over. The allies are probably the most frustrating part of combat as their health pools are quite small. Increasing the health by 50% or so would probably cut down on the irritation by giving players a little more breathing room.

The boss fights offer some of the best moments in Batora: Lost Haven. Bosses are multi-stage affairs. They change modes just like Avril and have a separate health bar for each mode. Once a health segment is cleared in one mode, Avril has only a small window to clear the same segment in the other mode or the entire segment is refilled. The game combines the mechanics with some snappy boss attacks to create a skill heavy system that rewards patient players who can manage their cooldowns and dodge effectively.

Controls are tight and responsive. Dodging is a huge part of the game, and the slight cooldown requires players to time their dodges instead of spamming it relentlessly. The only improvement I could suggest is making the aim assist a little more generous at longer ranges, especially against stationary puzzle objects.

The RPG mechanics are very light. The entire system revolves around the runes Avril can equip. The runes can either boost stats and skills or grant new abilities. Each rune has a type and a point value, and there is a cap on how many points worth of runes can be equipped at one time. As Avril levels up, the cap is increased, allowing Avril to become more powerful. There is a little bit of stat and ability tweaking with the runes, but it is not very deep. It is just enough to tweak Avril to suit a certain playstyle, but the system isn’t complex enough where players can create game breaking builds. The light mechanics suits the game well as the mechanics put more emphasis on player skill than grinding out levels.

Visuals

Batora: Lost Haven offers a solid style reminiscent of the major North American animation studios. Since Avril visits four planets, the game’s plot gives the artists a ripe opportunity to flex their creative muscles, and they did not disappoint. Each planet is a unique world with inhabitants that match the world nicely.

My only complaint with the game’s visuals is how far out the camera is by default. It’s so far out that players miss some of the enemy model details, yet it doesn’t add anything to the game combat-wise since aiming that far out is so fussy. Except for the odd boss fight, the slightly zoomed in camera angle provides a more intimate and pleasant experience.

Audio

Batora: Lost Haven offers an enjoyable soundtrack that compliments the gameplay well. It’s a subtle accompaniment for the most part, but the composer chooses the right time to push the music to the forefront so the right tone is set. The sound effects are solid. The voice acting is good for the most part, but it isn’t the most consistent thing in the world. Avril and the main characters are done really well, but performances for the smaller roles and weirder voices are just a half a step behind.

Overall

Batora: Lost Haven offers a mechanically solid action RPG. The story is enjoyable. The audio-visual experience is well done. The RPG mechanics are just deep enough to be entertaining without taking away from the skill heavy nature of the game. Combat can get a little repetitive at times, but the tight controls and excellent boss fights more than make up for the formulaic combat.

Sydney, Australia – October 19, 2022 – Microids is delighted to share new details about Horse Tales – Emerald Valley Ranch through a new dedicated Microids Backstage blog post. Discover Microids Backstage’s new blog post on Horse Tales!

An accessible equestrian adventure for all!

Horse Tales – Emerald Valley Ranch is an adventure for horse lovers of all ages. To ensure that children, teens, and adults can enjoy the game to the fullest, many of the gameplay mechanics are easy to learn, but tricky to master. The horse riding itself is a good example. Younger players can easily steer and gallop to navigate the world, while more experienced players will be able to use more advanced mechanics like sliding around corners in their climb to the top of the leaderboards.

Creating horses with personality

Instead of treating horses as a hairy car that gets them somewhere faster, Horse Tales – Emerald Valley Ranch encourages players to form bonds and genuinely care about their stable. That goes ‘hand in hoof’ with horses that express a range of distinct personalities. In game, this translates into unique traits and stats for each horse.

Traits determine how horses react to their environment: for instance, a clingy horse will follow you when you dismount to explore on foot, while a horse that is afraid of heights will be less inclined to go to certain areas. On the other hand, stats like Agility, Strength or Endurance will dictate how fast a horse gallops, how far it jumps, and how quickly it recovers stamina.

Get your perfect dream horse through breeding!

Much like the riding controls, breeding horses in Horse Tales – Emerald Valley Ranch can be as casual or as deep-diving as players want. Once you have built enough shelter, food resource, and activity buildings, along with a special breeding stable on the Emerald Valley Estate, you can start your very own breeding program.

At first glance, breeding is simple enough: By pairing two horses with similar stats, you easily get a slight stats improvement in their offspring. The new horse will also inherit some traits and colour characteristics from its parents. Those colour characteristics, however, are where the breeding gets more challenging as it mimics real life horse genetics.

As an open world game, Horse Tales offers players a lot of freedom. This also means that players are able to breed horses however they want, whether they simply want to have a fast and robust horse of any colour, or they want to breed the perfect horse with the best stats and the rarest coat.

Players will also have to explore to find new horses to add to their breeding programs. Some can be encountered and tamed in the wild, while others can be obtained by talking to NPCs who are willing to lend out their own horses for breeding purposes.

The combination of these different elements – looks, genetics, stats and traits – makes for an incredible variety of unique horses and gives the player a lot of freedom to choose what to focus on in their horse breeding and training. And once you’ve achieved your own personal perfect horse – be it particularly pretty to look at, particularly good at sprinting and jumping, or the ideal mix of both – you’ll get to enjoy exploring the vast open world of Horse Tales: Emerald Valley Ranch even more.
