Overview

Dragon Quest Treasures is the first spin-off of the franchise to come west in some time and looks to extend the lore of the widely acclaimed Dragon Quest XI with a brand-new story. This title puts players in the roles of a young Erik and Mia, featuring new mechanics, areas, and a wholesome little tale based around loot. Does it stand on its own, or is this adventure one to pass on? Let’s find out.

Story

Starting out, players are whipped into a journey within Dragon Quest Treasures that feels completely unique to the franchise. Players take control of both Erik and Mia (who are kids at this point) who escape their Viking captors and set out on an adventure where they must encounter other hunters, gangs, and evil forces that look to be attempting to find the same rare treasures that are laid out before them. The game features a light yet very fresh narrative that may not be deep, yet still captures the charm and atmosphere that made XI a modern classic. Sometimes it’s just the way the story is told that makes a difference, and despite being kind of short, this plot still manages to unfold in a way that makes it feel both important and interesting until the credits roll. The characters are interesting and have great dialogue segments with our heroes, adding a nice layer to a universe that is worth expanding upon.

Gameplay

While the story may be simplistic, Dragon Quest Treasures is really anything but. Players are tasked with many roles to complete their objective, which is mainly to collect as much loot as they can while searching for chests and goods all throughout the vast regions of Draconia. To find treasure, these two alternate as the protagonists, exploring one area at a time with an entire gang of monsters. Monsters must be recruited and provide new abilities that unlock their own abilities that can provide boosts such as the ability to glide, hop, and break through walls in order to get to new areas. Monsters are also where the combat comes in as well, which is worth talking about on its own.

At its core, Dragon Quest Treasures is an Action-RPG. Instead of the traditional turn-based fare, players can use their daggers and slingshots to do battle. Instead of magic, your slingshot can receive special pellets so you can ensure your squad stays safe, with both offensive and defensive attacks that can be executed from afar. The monsters cannot be controlled other than general commands, as they auto attack, but can be leveled up and swapped out at will prior to any mission. It’s an odd gimmick for sure but works well enough to still feel satisfying for this entry. In some ways, Treasures reminds me of the Dragon Quest Monsters titles of the past, mixed with the exploration elements of Rocket Slime, which was a Nintendo DS exclusive. New monsters can unlock new paths in already explored areas, opening more treasure and quests, with the depth of a standard DQ adventure coated on top with all the items and variables that come with leveling and growing as a “gang”.

Coming off XI’s success does show the limitations of this spin-off just a bit. Sometimes it almost feels as if the game has a lack of challenge and while treasure hoarding is addictive and fun, combat never feels as interesting simply navigating around the world. The game is surprisingly large, but I never felt too much of a threat, even when the game progressed onward as it seemed almost as if my gang was over-levelled and had an answer to everything. Sure, this is meant to be a lighter experience marketed towards a potential younger audience – but I do think some sharper teeth could have added a bit more substance and gratification beyond the treasure hunting, which worked very well for Treasures as a whole.

Visuals

Visually, things look mostly great. The animations and art style featured present a slightly different look for things, but things still seem sharp and fluid despite the change of genre for Treasures. Characters look as interesting as their sharp-witted personalities, and the worlds are varied and a blast to explore. The textures however can be a bit plain, and the lack of detail on the map may leave a little to be desired for those hunting for a more fleshed out RPG on their Switch. Those who played XI, however, shouldn’t be upset several reworked and familiar assets are worked in this title without issue, with the cutscenes coming off as crisp and endearing.

Audio

The soundtrack really depends on the player. Sure, the originality is low, but the Dragon Quest tunes are mostly here, as well as the sounds and traditional fare that never seem to change much throughout all the installments. There are some unique tunes, but the soundtrack will be loudly familiar – for better or worse. The voice acting is fantastic, making cutscenes feel cinematic, with performances that are just as memorable as they are entertaining.

Overall

Dragon Quest Treasures is a worthy spin-off for Erik and Mia, and one that is sure to find its way as a “hidden gem” on the platform for generations to come. While it may not be the broadest of adventures, it does feature a lot of fun and interweaving gimmicks with its combat and exploration mechanics that do well at creating a foundation for future installments to come. There is something truly addictive about hunting for treasure, and this little title is sure to be a golden find for those of us needing something to satisfy our appetite for the franchise until the next major sequel or remake finds its way to consoles.

All-Star Developer and Cast Reveal Redemption Reapers, a Dark Fantasy Tactical RPG

ENDER LILIES Team Pairs with TRPG Vets for their Sophomore Title, Coming in Early 2023

TOKYO – Dec. 12, 2022 – Redemption Reapers, the dark fantasy tactical RPG developed by Adglobe and published by Binary Haze Interactive (ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights), sneaks into striking distance and prepares for launch on Steam for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in February 2023.

Redemption Reapers is being brought to life by industry luminaries, including tactical RPG veteran Masayuki Horikawa (Fire Emblem series director and scenario/level designer; Kingdom Hearts III planning), as well as a star-studded voice cast featuring Kyle McCarley (13 Sentinels: Aegis of Ruin, NieR: Automata), Allegra Clark (Apex Legends, Dragon Age: Inquisition), David Lodge (Persona 5, Final Fantasy XV), and Lucien Dodge (Fire Emblem: Three Houses, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series).

Hope fades across the land following the sudden appearance of the ruthless Mort armies. Efficient as they are brutal, the macabre forces descend upon civilizations, leaving destruction in the wake of their nightly raids. As entire nations fall to the Mort onslaught, the Ashen Hawk Brigade, a contingent of mercenaries specializing in surprise tactics, band together to fight back against the invading legions.

Lead the Ashen Hawk Brigade in tactical skirmishes on 3D maps. Employ strategic moves, directing units across the battlefield before issuing commands to attack, defend, or deploy skills during each turn. Overcome seemingly insurmountable odds by mastering sneak attacks for extra damage or powerful combo strikes from multiple Brigade members.

Ensure each Brigade member is fit for the trials ahead by outfitting the party with powerful gear. Turn hard-earned spoils of victory into resources for crafting mighty weapons and armor. Upgrade skills to unlock combat abilities capable of turning a ragtag troop of underdogs into courageous champions.

Carve through the Mort and uncover a gripping, mature story of wartime struggles. Witness powerful moments unfold between members of the Brigade during fully voiced cutscenes (recorded in English and Japanese audio) as fighters learn more about their allies and the world around them. Guide the Ashen Hawk Brigade’s rise from obscurity to folk heroes as members grapple with their dark past as a deadly – and despised – organization dubbed “Faithless Reapers.”

“Following the success of ENDER LILIES, we aimed to approach a new genre ideal for sharing our love of dark fantasy stories,” said Hiroyuki Kobayashi, CEO, Binary Haze Interactive. “Redemption Reapers’ tactical RPG combat and emotional storytelling combine for a memorable experience we cannot wait to share with the world in early 2023.”

Redemption Reapers will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam for Windows PC in February 2023 with Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), and Korean-language support, and voiceover options in English and Japanese.

Over-The-Top Custom Battleship Builder Waves of Steel v1.0 Kickflips Over Torpedoes onto Steam Feb. 6, 2023

Final Content Update Brings Massive Mecha Boat Boss, Docking Onto Xbox Series X|S Later

SAN FRANCISCO – Dec. 12, 2022 – Waves of Steel, the build-your-own-battleship (BYOB) arcade naval combat sim with outrageously excessive warships from TMA Games, charges full speed ahead out of Steam Early Access on PC and into its v1.0 release on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023 with new bosses, missions, and the finale to the game’s campaign. The aquatic chaos will also make its way to Xbox Series X|S in the near future.

The upcoming content in version 1.0 of Waves of Steel pits naval captains against the “Gale Barrier Ultimate Weapon,” a transforming warship that pays homage to classic anime mecha franchises. Once it’s been sent to the scrap heap, confront the overwhelming power of “The Biggest Gun”, which needs to be seen to be believed, and things continue to escalate from there!

Customize cruisers to blast through the high seas against an eclectic cast of maniacal supervillains and their unconventional naval weaponry. Support Captain Quinn on a mission to save planet Earth from the mysterious armadas of Jörmungandr. Progress through more than 30 missions full of traditional and outlandish challenges to earn new tech and equipment. Build a bigger and better battleship, a match for every deranged superweapon that these antagonists can dream up.

Equip each ship from a selection of over 400 different parts, including massive naval artillery, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft guns, lasers and railguns, plasma lances, giant sawblades, and more. Skillfully use game-changing superpowers like an invulnerable energy shield, ramming drill, time-stopping bubble, and yes, a kickflip, among many, many others. Bring flair to the fight with an in-depth cosmetic editor offering endless paint jobs, alternate-universe flag designs, decals, lights, and more audacious adornments.

Take advantage of a wealth of accessibility options. Rebind controls, adjust HUD colors, change the game speed and difficulty, and even configure any and every weapon to acquire targets and fire automatically. Waves of Steel strives to allow everyone to express themselves, while enjoying over-the-top destructive naval combat.

“It has been so hard to keep my mouth shut about these last missions,” said Chris Weisiger, Founder of TMA Games. “They really embody what I like most about Waves of Steel: fast-paced naval action that goes in completely ridiculous directions. There’s one more surprise waiting for you once you finish those final boss fights. Alongside all the minigames, bonus missions, and other secret content, we’re delivering an incredibly over-the-top experience next year!”

Habbo’s first limited access alpha season launches, starting with a 24 hour open house, followed by a land sale of more than 1,000 room NFTs for use in-game

Helsinki, 12 December 2022 — Today, Azerion has announced the launch of the Habbo X Alpha, the first fully Web3.0 integrated Habbo game. Here players have access to a distinct space where the Habbo and NFT community can integrate, mingle, own their rooms and, in the near future, create their own monetised games and experiences.

Today is the first of a three day staggered opening where Habbo Avatar owners will get their first look at the Alpha. On December 13th, a 24-hour open house will begin allowing anyone, Avatar owners or not, to experience what Habbo X has to offer. On December 14th, the Alpha will be limited to Habbo Avatar owners and to owners of the newly released 1,300 room NFTs of which: 100 can be bought with NFT credits (the Habbo NFT ecosystem’s currency), 200 will be minted for giveaways and the rest will be available to purchase at prices ranging from 0.1 to 1.25ETH depending on their size (more info). These room NFTs can be decorated like traditional Habbo rooms and host other players on the server. Unlike other games where users must buy items to decorate their rooms, Habbo X room owners will be able to use the enormous back catalogue, containing the majority of the 18,000+ existing Habbo items plus existing NFT furni, to decorate with while creating immersive social spaces.

Amidst the general waning of NFT sentiment, the Habbo community remains welcoming and committed to Habbo’s Web3.0 integration. The Habbo X Alpha 1 comes off the back of a successful pre-alpha test which saw 975 Habbo Avatar owners spending 3850 hours in-game, nearly 4 hours per user on average. This is indicative of the enthusiastic Habbo NFT community which continues to remain strong with over 24,000 members on the allocated Discord channel engaging in regular discussions.

Habbo X is the next step for Habbo since it launched in 2000 as one of the first proto-metaverses. This new server enhances Habbo’s social and creative community experience through the endless possibilities available in the Web3.0 metaverse,” said Jurriaan van Teunenbroek, Vice President of Games and Content at Azerion. “Through embracing this new technology, Habbo is maintaining its position as a pioneer as an innovative, inclusive and safe environment for people of all ages to connect and socialize.”

The new ‘Apex Predators’ will conquer the War Thunder skies

Gaijin Entertainment announces that the next big update for the military online action game War Thunder will be called “Apex Predators” and is planned for the end of December. It will bring three of the most famous fourth-generation jets ever, the F-16, MiG-29 and Panavia Tornado. All three are a part of the Air Force from many nations having performed combat missions in multiple conflicts. In addition, dozens of other new models of vehicles will appear in the game – for example, the Soviet 9A35M2 Strela-10M2 anti-aircraft system, the Israeli Magach 7 tank and the Japanese SUB-I-II armored personnel carrier prototype will be added to the game that will significantly expand the tactical options for players.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is the most widely produced fourth-generation fighter and the most widely used combat aircraft in the world right now. Several versions of the F-16A modification used by the Air Forces of different nations will debut in War Thunder. The capabilities of F-16A have also been repeatedly tested in combat operations: for example, the Israeli Air Force used the F-16A over the territory of Lebanon in the early 80s, and the US Air Force did that during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. The aircraft is in service with three dozen countries, and it is still being produced and modernized.

The F-16A has an excellent rate of climb and can climb almost vertically immediately after launch. The aircraft easily breaks the sound barrier while maintaining excellent handling and roll speed, allowing you to perform all basic combat maneuvers. Depending on the version and the chosen weaponry, the fighter can be used as a pure interceptor with guided missiles of the Sidewinder line, or as a multi-role aircraft equipped with adjustable or unguided bombs for ground attacks.

The MiG-29 is a Soviet fighter that was created in the same years as the F-16. Compared to the F-16A, the Soviet fighter is significantly heavier, but has slightly better rates of climb and top speed thanks to a more powerful power plant. As a result, the MiG-29 goes beyond the sound barrier a little longer, but it is able to maneuver almost freely at speeds of about Mach 1 without losing much energy. According to its concept, the MiG-29 was conceived primarily as an interceptor, but the design still provides for the installation of unguided weapons to work on ground targets – for example, heavy S-24B missiles, blocks with S-8KO missiles, bombs in calibers of up to 500 kg and incendiary tanks.

Panavia Tornado is a multi-purpose aircraft with  variable-swept, developed by a consortium of European countries in the late seventies, and is still in service, similarly to the F-16 and MiG-29. During their service with the Royal Air Force of Great Britain and other countries, the Tornadoes took part in numerous NATO combat operations – for example, in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is most often used as an attack aircraft, destroying ground targets with adjustable and free-falling bombs, but Sidewinder missiles allow it to counter air enemies as well.

With the release of the F-16, MiG-29, Tornado and other comparable combat aircraft in War Thunder, a new, eighth rank appears in the aircraft development trees. The rest of the aerial vehicles that will be assigned to it, as well as other new content of the Apex Predators update, will be announced in the coming weeks on the official website of the game.

Critically Acclaimed Gamedec Coming to PlayStation 5

Anshar Studios & Perp Games announce partnership to bring digital and physical PlayStation 5 version of the award winning Gamedec Definitive Edition to market.

London, UK, 12th December  2022 Anshar Studios and Perp Games are delighted to announce they are partnering to bring Gamedec Definitive Edition to console, early 2023.

Gamedec is a narrative-focused, non-combat story that puts players in the shoes of a digital detective diving deep into case files spread across the digital worlds of 22nd century Warsaw. How you respond during each case is as important as what you discover—your personality determines skills that unlock different opportunities and paths to different cases.

We are excited Gamedec has a chance to hit the major league. The topic of a potential Gamedec release on PlayStation has been floating around since the crowdfunding campaign back in 2020. The partnership with Perp Games allows us to reach out to the new gamers, who surely will appreciate the extensive branching path the game has. We are aware the roster of PlayStation titles also shows, people are demanding games with choices and consequences. We hope you will feel the weight of the decisions faced by the detectives in the 22nd Century.” Jakub Kwinta – Head of Publishing, Anshar Publishing

“It is such a privilege to be partnering with Anshar Studios on the incredibly detailed game, Gamedec.  Perp Games has always had Virtual Reality close to our hearts and this is why Gamedec is such a great game as it explores a futuristic world where people live out second lives in Virtual Reality.   But this is vision of Virtual Reality that can go dark and sinister, very quickly.” Said Rob Edwards, CEO at Perp Games.

ABOUT GAMEDEC

Gamedec is an authentic RPG experience where decisions are important and come with consequences. The world in which you live adapts to each decision you make. As the story progresses, your hero adapts as well. Just like in “real” life, the consequences of your choices can be immediate, long-term, or stay hidden, surfacing only when you least expect them. Whatever you decide, the game will remain neutral without judging your choices or suggesting “better” options. It is up to you to evaluate what you’ve done. Just remember that in this job, the game is always on.

Anshar Studios returns to the foundations of the RPG genre with their new game, built on mechanics such as Deduction, the Codex, and Aspects. These allow for complex conversations and interactions as players create or expose networks of conspiracies while discovering unusual relationships between virtual worlds. Gamedec’s pen-and-paper-based RPG mechanics give players the freedom to approach situations from multiple perspectives.

YOU ARE THE SUM OF YOUR CHOICES

Your goal is to hunt down the criminals of virtual worlds – rich and spoiled businesspeople, corporations with plans to rewrite history. Are they acting alone, or are they mere puppets? What does a “happy ending” mean to you? To them? Each decision changes the world around you and your character’s personality. Some decisions will feel right, but others might be unexpected.

EXPLORE THE CYBERPUNK OF THE 22ND CENTURY

Welcome to Warsaw City in the 22nd century, where “real” is relative and “life” and “death” have many meanings. Real and virtual worlds have merged, giving rise to ancient vices: lust, sloth, pride, envy… That’s why everyone needs gamedecs – specialists who solve real problems in virtual worlds. Be it the Wild West or a prehistoric amusement park, these and many other worlds reveal our inclinations and weaknesses.

EXPERIENCE THE ESSENCE OF ROLE-PLAYING

Use your wits to gather info from witnesses and suspects, get to the bottom of deceptive schemes, save lives, and investigate the extraordinary relationships between virtual worlds and their inhabitants. Gamedec emulates the nature of tabletop RPGs by focusing on character development through decision-making. As in classic tabletop RPGs, you’re given the freedom to approach situations from multiple angles rather than forcing a single solution – the choice is yours and yours alone.

More information can be found on the game’s official website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Discord.

Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports looks back on 2022 ahead of season finale

Hinwil, 12 December 2022 – Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports looks back on a strong 2022 esports season as the team prepares for the final three rounds of the 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship. Drivers Nico Longuet, Dani Bereznay, and Tomek Poradzisz head into Event Four firmly holding sixth place in the standings, fully aware the opportunity of moving up even higher to P5 is still within reach.

It’s been a positive season for the skilled ensemble, which collected a series of impressive results after quickly managing to turn the tide from a less-than-ideal start. Frenchman Longuet showed his great skills and consistency, finishing in the Top Ten in seven out of nine rounds so far, including a spectacular pole position in Monza which resulted in the team’s first P3 of the season. Following a pointless spell, returning race winner Dani Bereznay had a great Event Three, finishing fourth and seventh and scoring precious points. The team also prided itself with giving emerging talent Poradzisz the opportunity to grow and show his potential race after race.

The season also saw the unveiling of the Sauber Esports Arena, a brand-new home for the team and a significant step forward in Sauber Motorsport’s Esports programme, as further proof of its commitment to create a remarkable virtual racing legacy.

While Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports is currently sitting strongly in sixth place in the Constructors Standings, the fifth spot is just six points away: Nico, Dani, and Tomek are fully determined on giving everything until the Abu Dhabi chequered flag to finish the season on a high and achieve an even greater result for the team.

Event Four of the 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship will take place from the 14th to 16th December. Round 10, 11, and 12 will be hosted in Suzuka, Interlagos, and Abu Dhabi respectively.

Cameron Cowell, Team Principal: “The F1 Esports Series Pro Championship almost flew by: it seems like yesterday when we were announcing our 2022 line-up and getting ready for our debut, and now we’re already approaching the final three rounds of the season. We can consider ourselves satisfied with the job done so far: we had a positive season, and our results constantly improved round after round. Together with two established talents like Dani and Nico, we also had the delight of seeing our rising star Tomek growing with the team. I am sure we will be witnessing great achievements from him in the future. We can cement our sixth-place position this week, but our aim is for more: P5 is still up for grabs, and I’m confident our drivers will be doing their very best to try and seize it.”

Nico Longuet: “After Event Three, we all needed a much-deserved break, to get our minds off the Championship for a while: it had been a few long weeks of constant driving and practicing, and I feel we were all quite exhausted. We have had much more time to prepare Event Four, and I think we have managed our time well. This is our last chance to clinch fifth place in the Constructors’ championship and we will give our all to do that. The tracks for this event are quite thrilling, especially Brazil, which is usually the track I perform best at, so I’m really looking forward to it. There are still some days of training ahead of the final three rounds, and I feel fresh and ready to compete again. Let’s end the year on a high!”

Dani Bereznay: “In terms of enjoying racing in general, Event Four tracks will make an exciting challenge for us, and I am sure they will provide awesome races. We have two main goals: to gain another position in the Constructors’ Championship, first, and to outperform ourselves compared to Event Three with our growing experience in the Sauber Esports Arena, to carry great confidence and momentum over the winter break and in the challenges ahead.”

Tomek Poradzisz: “After the first three Events, where we had to practice flat-out pretty much every day, we finally got a bit of rest time as there has been a full six-week break. Nevertheless, training resumed quickly, and we have been preparing hard for the final event of the season, which is our last chance to gain some crucial points for the Constructors’ Standings. Personally. My season has been a growing experience, I have been learning a lot and gaining much needed experience; I am hoping to show the best version of my driving in the final three races and bring home valuable results for the team”.

STOCKHOLM Dec. 9, 2022 – Raw Fury’s Rawcember event is well underway with an assortment of reveals, and we’re continuing the festivities with even more exciting announcements. Read on as we unwrap some new treats, including two new playable demos – one available today, and one still to come!

Starting today through December 16, the online PvP shooter-meets-deck-building game Friends vs Friends has a new demo on Steam. Featuring a brand-new map, 30+ cards, extensive character progression, and a snow-capped holiday theme, Friends vs Friends will get you and your friends into the holiday spirit!

Next up, Atomicrops “Deerly Beloved” DLC will be available on Xbox and PlayStation December 15, as well as hitting Nintendo Switch in January. Battle a skeletal suitor, discover new rewards, harvest souls, and use the new ax tool in this post-apocalyptic action roguelite farming sim.

Additionally, the demo for SKALD: Against the Black Priory is getting a significant update, available on Steam December 20. SKALD is a retro-style RPG set in a grim-dark fantasy world of tragic heroes, violent deaths and Lovecraftian horror. This latest demo refresh introduces even more features coming to the full game, including a character creator, a new recruitable NPC, several map areas, and more.

Last but not least, in the wake of this year’s Kingdom Eighties announcement, Kingdom Two Crowns has been a bit on the quiet side, but not for long. On Monday, December 12, the franchise’s core game will reveal its next major update. With a release just weeks away, players won’t have to wait long to mount their glorious steeds and ride off into the sunset.

Be sure to check Raw Fury’s Twitter and Steam Publisher Page each day for new surprises in store! PC, console, and VR players will find gifts wrapped just for them as Rawcember continues through December 24.
